    Wow, Elizabeth... you really know what you're talking about! Very interesting, excellent observations. And thanks for pronouncing everything right, not easy! Oh... the flute player is Jeroen Goossens, not me. I can't even whistle :-) Keep up the good work!

      Thanks, Arjen! And thank you especially for both writing excellent music, and for your help in clearing the block on this video. I'm looking forward to featuring more music by you soon.
      Side note: I had some help from peeps on Patreon with the pronunciations. They are an awesome group, who also adore your work.

    I've been in two concerts of Anneka and she's like the sweetest, she hugs you before you try to hug her! would you consider to analyze her EARLY years? like her '95 "strange machines" performance ? no body makes these kind of songs anymore, her signature vocal style was so influential for female fronted metal scene!

    Just from the Ayreon Universe there are a ton of great videos. “River of Time” with Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian) and Marko Hietala (Nightwish), “Day Sixteen: Looser” with Michael Mills (Toehider, amazing voice), “And the Druids turn to stone” with Damian Wilson (Maiden United, Headspace, Treshold, Star One and many more) “Magnetism” with Tommy Karevik (Kamelot), Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering, Devin Townsend Project, The Gentle Storm, VUUR) and Marko Hietala. Just a few that I absolutely love from that concert, but basically all of the discography of Arjen ;)

      Yeah, by this point, a lot of reactors_know_ her. She's everywhere, with Devin, with Amorphis, with Ayreon, yet nobody ever seems to react to _The Gathering._ It's a shame really, she's such an inspirational singer and such a nice person in general.

    • @mvanderplas2275
      @mvanderplas2275 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes on the Gathering, just not A Noise Severe. Listen to Travel on youtube and on bandcamp. The youtube version sounds wrong compared to the bandcamp one. I'm quite sure they used the wrong audio track from the DVD. Same goes for Valley of the Queens from Electric Castle Live I suspect.

      Travel from their TG25 concert

    • @grungegrumpy3585
      @grungegrumpy3585 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Aye, Anneke would really deserve some central stage time in this channel by now. Imo her performances at the The Gathering TG25 concert doing 'Travel' and 'On most surfaces' are quite exemplary of her stunning vocal capabilities and impressive sound. Add their live version of 'Strange Machines' on Pinkpop '96 and you get both a nice picture of her development through the decades, while also getting an idea of how she inspired a whole generation of lead female metal singers and while getting a hunch of The Gathering's grunge and Pink Floyd roots and inspiration.
      Anneke explored a very broad range of styles, with maybe only progrock elements and her unique vocal presence as a common denominator.
      The 2015 Masters of Rock performance of 'The Storm' by Anneke's and Arjen's mutual proggy project 'The Gentle Storm' is also worth a listen as it shows both an excellent Anneke as lead and Marcela as support.
      Both rougher and lighter stuff by Anneke and Devin with The Devin Townsend Project is also worth experiencing: varying from 'Kingdom' and 'Grace' in the Retinal Cicrcus show to 'Ih Ah'.
      Finally, Anneke's cooperations with Danny Cavanagh and similar artists along with her solo acoustic performances are worth a listen.
      Edit: Oh, and might I mention Ayreon's 'Comatose' performed by Anneke and Katatonia's Jonas Renske? :)

  • @Nro52
    @Nro52 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    This song is lovely. As you said, nothing extravagan, but utterly beautiful and touching.
    As for recomendations, Arjen had a project, Star One. From a live concert, there´s a song called "The eye of Ra", which has more opera rock vibes and is sang by many people. They´re all great singers, Rusell Allen is an amazing one... and also, Floor is there too.

  • @Evil_Peter

    I loved this reaction. Always great to see a knowledgeable musical mind react to Ayreon.
    I'd recommend doing The Day that the World Breaks Down next as not only is it a big song with eleven singers involved, it also has annotations made by Arjen that will further shed light on the song, the singers, the musicians, and also some of the gear that's being used. I think it's a great step off point to get into this project.

  • @cemerson
    @cemerson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The wind instrument player in this is Jeroen Goossens - a frequent collaborator with Arjen and Ayreon
    Other great Ayreon Universe choices:
    - And The Druids Turned To Stone - Another ballad, but a bit rockier than this one. Damian Wilson on vocals, Rob Snijders (Anneke Van Giersbergen's husband) on drums.
    - Comatose - Rob Snijders, Anneke Van Giersbergen & Jonas Renkse. Another light one but I just LOVE Jonas' warm vocal tone and this is one of the best examples within Ayreon
    - Everybody Dies - Mike Mills (Toehider), loads of other vocallists including Irene Jansen (Floor's sister) amongst the backing vocallists. Much more rock, and Mike hits some insane high notes!
    - The Castle Hall - Arjen's only appearance in the show AFAIK on guitar. He gets stage fright and likes to limit his live appearances for the most part as I understand.
    The Day That The World Breaks Down is a good track as others have suggested but I'm not sure if there's a live version of it

    • @cemerson
      @cemerson 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh and if you want a sense of just how many people were involved in the Universe shows, the whole ensemble get on stage together in 'The Eye Of Ra'

  • @RalfHaring
    @RalfHaring 4 ปีที่แล้ว +49

    I think Everybody Dies is a good primer. Lots of singers. More rock. Floor is in there, too. th-cam.com/video/9AAXtUdM7xE/w-d-xo.html
    Castle Hall is another good punchy one. Arjen plays but doesn't sing on it, though it does feature Damian Wilson who is a real standout on many Ayreon songs. th-cam.com/video/iKGaeQ9f-cY/w-d-xo.html
    Star of Sirrah has Floor teaming with Hansi Kürsch from Blind Guardian. I'm sure you'll get around to them one day as well. th-cam.com/video/3dEHQNAZsIo/w-d-xo.html
    Eye of Ra is a big final number with literally dozens of singers. th-cam.com/video/odcO0SciTUY/w-d-xo.html
    Amazing Flight is one with lots of Arjen singing. There are also a couple unexpected surprises at the beginning and halfway through. th-cam.com/video/r5IitoFXc7E/w-d-xo.html

    Hello, Elizabeth!
    If you’re looking for an Ayreon track that rocks and is a bit longer, check out the live version of “Merlin’s Will.” It features FOUR women singers, including Floor and Marcela. Far be it from a typical rock song (especially for Ayreon!), the ladies manage to make it something unique, and their own.
    Give it a go!

  • @darkiee69
    @darkiee69 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The instrument Jeroen is playing is a low whistle, the big brother of the Irish tin whistle. It's the same instrument Troy is playing on some Nightwish songs.
    The reason he has two of them is that they're tuned different.

    Ayreon is such a deep well of talent to explore. It seems many people have reacted to 'The Day that the World Breaks Down' as their introduction, and it's a great start with 11 different singers. Arjen comments throughout the video about the story, singers, instrumentalists and the gear he used on the album. It's 13 minutes that feels like it goes so quickly.

    As for this song, it was indeed written for Anneke who did the part of the Egyptian.
    In the show Quarantalks , she does a acoustic version al by herself and totally nails it. (th-cam.com/video/7LqT0jDi7P8/w-d-xo.html starts at 3.30)

    Have you ever heard of Agua de Annique? Anneke's band after she left The Gathering; i suggest Beautiful One ♥️ or Travel of the Gathering. Anneke has a huge admiration for Mozart, this song is about that.

    I'd like to point to one more from the Ayreon Universe Live show:
    The Eye Of Ra
    Nobody can claim that they've got the most ambitious crossover project until they've seen everyone on that stage in that song.

    And as I asked many many many times. Please Elizabeth, react to The day that the world breaks down by Ayreon. You will see Arjen himself perform on different instruments, you will see 11 singers, names, background etc etc.

    I love this song!!! You should try Love You To Death by Type O Negative. The lead singer, Peter Steele, is a bass who's voice simply draws you in.

    I don't know if you're ever heard of Lana Lane, but, she has some nice pipes also. Find her music on TH-cam. I've been a big fan of her's for years. Also, big fan of Nightwish with Tarja. But, Floor Jansen has got that extra something that fits perfectly with Nightwish. They are like lightening in a bottle. Floor is just such a versatile singer.

    It’s probably hard to write for ladies of this caliber because you have no idea what they’re truly capable. This song is amazing but it feels so short, but Arjen really knows how to use these ladies voices to get the best out of them.

    For another Ayreon song, I would suggest Age of Shadows, live from Ayreon Universe. The song is more rock/metal. It features both of the Nightwish singers, Marco and Floor. You also get to hear Floor us her more operatic style voice.
    Love your reactions and analysis of songs. Keep up the good work.

    Just to add a voice but maybe a differing one: I would suggest 'Everybody Dies', 'Merlins Will' or 'Eye of Ra' for a variety of singers and singing - then take a swing at 'The Day That The World Breaks Down' for something a little different.

    For the whole gamut of human emotion in the language of music, I recommend his album The Human Equation. It has a great range of musical styles that greatly add to the storytelling (which all of his albums do, but this is more like a side story). His works are the greatest audiobook series ever, especially if you are into sci fi.
    Another good intro into his storytelling is The Day That The World Breaks Down.
    He has built an entire universe with a past, present and future, in the language of sound. The ultimate bedtime stories, with wisdom and meaning to be found in so many places.
    Safe travels :)

    Ayreon? I personally love the Human Equation album. Its about a person in coma after a car accident. Every song is a day in his coma, where each day represents a feeling. Try this:
    day 11 Love: th-cam.com/video/VRyX-lEGbfQ/w-d-xo.html
    day 2 Isolation: th-cam.com/video/0zaJlvmpLrw/w-d-xo.html
    day 3 Pain: th-cam.com/video/0zaJlvmpLrw/w-d-xo.html
    I think the woman in red represents his subconscious
