    Utterly amazed this isn't part of a recall. I'm going to check mine immediately but a suggestion down below by John PM is absolutely spot on. It would only require a simple inline modification from Ford, between the existing male/female connectors that breaks the path of any fluid being able to travel up the wires into the BCM. Mine's a 14 Plate, assuming the Washer Pump is ok and no apparent leaks, I'm going to splice some spade connectors into the loom so that there's no possibility of the fluid using capillary action to do it's evil deed.

      According to Ford they have no recollection of the fault lol…. Utter rubbish.
      Yes i suggested doing that, but for some reason guy wanted it kept original?

    The exact same problem here, great video, very good explications, found it to late unfortunatly, spend 1000 quid, for all you've described, used bcm , reprogram the bcm and all that... Great video!

      Thanks mate, unfortunately yes it’s usually the case of been too late with these.
      My advise is solder up the wire at a few points to stop this happening again, or just cut the wire at few points and add in connector joints to break the direct link.
      Have a look on my channel always doing similar videos 👍🏼👍🏼

    Without doubt a lifesaver video, changed my pump today then cut the wires and placed an inline connector block so the water is stopped in it's tracks, my arse was like rabbits nose pulling that BCM block out to check the terminals thankfully no corrosion in sight. Great video mate, many thanks.

      Yes it’s becoming a very serious fault that Ford claim they have never heard of 😂
      That’s what I do with all these, cut the wires and join with a connector joint job done.
      Also find the new pumps Ford are still selling are not modified at all, so all these people paying out for new pumps are not really doing anything positive just throwing money down the drain.
      Thanks for watching…. Have a look at my other videos do weekly vlogs always full of useful mechanical content 👍🏼

      Was sent the video from someone in a forum. Stripped my down after weeks of weird electrical faults and battery drain. No corrosion on the BCM so I'm gonna give it a good clean and change the pump and terminals. Even if it doesn't work it's saved me the stupid money Ford wanted just to "investigate" a known fault

    All kinds of fluids getting inside the wires and connectors in a similar manner is a very well known problem in a car model that our code of conduct forbids me to say out loud... As cars have become bloated with unnecessary electronics this is the result. Just bought a Mondeo dead cheap, guess why I'm browsing YT right now.

    Had exactly same problem last week: lights and wipers came trough with vehicle locked. Cleaned the BCM terminals and used a hair dryer to dry the BCM (there was blue fluid all around). The main issues had gone, but now I am having a fault code related to brake switch and an Engine Damaged warning on the cluster (no loss of power at all). Will try a new brake switch, but very likely, I think the BCM will need to be replaced :(

    Cheers for adding this. Will direct my garage to this video as I'm wondering now if this is an issue with my MK4 Mondeo as I've replaced the washer pump on mine within the last year and recently while activating the rear wash wipe the car had what can only be described as an electrical mental fit. Every warning light, scrolling through every warning message on the HMI, dials going zero to max, oh and the engine cut out and refused to restart. Only issue this all happened while I was in the outside lane on the local express carriage way overtaking a lorry at 70. Not something I want to repeat ever again. Only resolve was to pull a battery terminal and reconnect as the car sat waiting for the RAC with all the lights on as they wouldn't switch off. RAC sent me a PDF with 6 pages of error codes upon scanning which after clearing not one has returned so far. As of today car works (touch wood) like nothing happened.

    • @CarAddictGarageNE
      @CarAddictGarageNE  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If BCM can be saved, you can cut the wires to the pump and solder them at various points and that stops the capillary action taking place.

    Use an aftermarket pump, then cut the wiring to the plug a few inches above then put an extra connector in and seal the car side of the new plug and put a drain hole on the pump side..... cheaper fix... or for real safety do this near the BCM plug, break the water route....

    Right I worked for a truck lighting company. This looks like capillary problem which our R & D came across on early lighting systems.Believe we used a system of special seals in the harnesses to overcome that problem. Looks like ford have messed up. I wonder how many other models have the same problem. From my own engineering experience maybe an t eruption

    • @CarAddictGarageNE

  • @kennethcameron9134
    @kennethcameron9134 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Very interesting.
    I have also experienced the BSM “Nervous Wreck” symptoms you described, but always after heavy rain.
    However, this is the 1st time I have seen this problem reported on the web, so I think it must be a rare event.
    Water was finding its way down onto the green BSM plug and socket area as shown in your video.
    The source of the leak appeared to be the seal at the bottom of the windscreen where it fits into the black guard panel. I attached black electrical insulation tape, as a temporary fix, across the whole of the bottom of the windscreen as the windscreen heater electrical connectors were getting wet.
    There has been no recurrence for 2 years now, but the tape needs to be replaced about every 6 months.
    I think this problem probably only occurs when the windscreen is replaced by a poorly fitting or fitted spare.
    In my experience water tends to find its way downwards and perhaps as far as the washer pump?
    As you say, the pump connector pins could be becoming wet from the pump leaking but it’s quite a long way up to the BSM.
    More info:-
    Mondeo 2010 Mk4 Hatchback 1.8 Diesel Zetec.
    It had to be towed into a Ford dealer, BSM replaced and reconfigured for £780.
    Ford said no leak was detected by their ingression test?

    • @CarAddictGarageNE
      @CarAddictGarageNE  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can assure you it’s 100% fed from the seals on the pins in the pump failing (screen wash) is fed through the copper core to the pin where it connect to the BCM.
      I work in conjunction with main dealers and member of mechanic only groups, and I’m seeing this issue been posted daily.
      Technical term is called capillary action, it’s a more common issue than you think, very common on oil and fuel sensors and you find your ECU been flooded with oil and fuel = same issue.
      If you look on the video you can see the fluid is been fed though only 1 singe pin (wire) then the acid in the screen wash eats into the resin in the circuit board causing even worse then water damage.

They let me in to see it and it was the exact same point of water ingress. The manager is new to Ford and claimed to have never heard of this fault and the boy who had been working on it said the car is "from before my time!!!" Its only a 2012 plate FFS.. Anyway I gave them an education on how it happened. I now have the option of shelling out for it or taking the car back and sourcing a second hand like-for-like BCM (and sealed water pump of course). Managed to find a BCM at £75 with exact same part number but it was in a Galaxy before. Not sure if that will just plug and play or if it will still need programmed.

    So my washer motor has just packed up yesterday, it's a 2012 mk4.5, ex taxi, 263,000 miles. I saw your video and saw that it looked relatively easy to replace the pump. I checked the fuses first below the glovebox, all in tact and no signs of waters ingress or corrosion anywhere, so back underneath and removed the washer pump, it did look a bit gunky, the connecting pin block showed no signs of wet. I have ordered a pump from ebay, £7.95(new) , after market obviously. My question is, if the new pump doesn't work and the fuses are OK, what else can I look at? Could the washer button on the end of the stalk be kaput? Or any other ideas? Thanks in advance.

    very interesting, tho tbh i'd be even more likely to just use a pattern pump in that case, it cant be any worse or possibly atleast a small chance it maybe better, i was also interested in why you stressed so much that you wouldnt usually advise not using screenwash, why is not using screenwash such a bad idea? i used it like everyone else does for years but any lubrication and anti streak properties are no more than extremely negligable and also got fed up of even correctly diluted stuff staining my paintwork and with anything zetec climate and above you have heated washer jets anyway so even any very slight antifreezing effect isnt as relevant these days, putting waterproofing gel in the connection plug would be my recommendation if anything tbh, you wont get any water ingression up wires if you fill the socket with that ;)

    • @CarAddictGarageNE
      @CarAddictGarageNE  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah not sure if I added that in, I always put silicone grease inside the plugs and pins.
      But best way around is to retro fit aftermarket pump, this customer requested genuine Ford one.
      Main reason I advise screen wash to stop freezing as most cars these days don’t have jet heaters like some Ford’s and Volvo, even worse the screenwash tanks are right down in the bumpers so no engine heat gets to them, and in direct cold air flow so they just freeze up solid.
      But yes most screen wash solutions are useless

      @@CarAddictGarageNE Agreed and if not the correct dilution or just crap screenwash (like most) they can actually cause congealed debris to clog the filter that is on the pump in the screenwash tank and in extreme cases clog the jets themselves, bring back the days that having an older car meant welding on a sill instead of electronic woes :D (just spent £200 having my abs/ecu module rebuilt by a specialist (posted it to them) for my volvo v50 that i use as my work car (and it just had new dpf sensor and hoses last month lol) my other cars couple of imps (no head gasket comments allowed lol) and a 2007 focus zetec climate 1.8 tdci i;ve had from new (waxoiled from new by me so one of the few with front wings etc completely bubble free lol) and it doesnt have dpf etc :)

      Hence I only use top quality screen wash and regularly flush it out.
      Yes my S80 D5 has some daft electric faults because the alarm siren module is bust, it stops the sun roof working.
      Yes them V50 share a lot of Ford items, I used to have a D5 V50 was fantastic, the D2/D3/D4 are just all Citroen/ Peugeot units.
      Them mk2 focus are a cracking car, but one thing that put me off them 1.8 TDCI was when the reserved to a wet belt from a chain to crank shaft, make sure to change yours (I don’t mean the upper external timing belt) this is the rubber timing belt that runs inside the engine, utter madness IMO

    Also have a 2008 Mondeo Titanium Estate 1.8TDCi - the battery seems ok but if left for a day or 2 i have to jump it, I have noticed when i have driven it, on the screen of the dash clocks the stereo / aux keeps disappearing also if the date and time are set that pulls the battery down too.. is this likely to be a BCM fault or a fault in the dash clocks or a bad earth somewhere.. I've got to say that looking at my motor, there is no way that water can get from the pump, up that wire. I've dismantled my motor and there is a rubber gasket at the bottom of the motor that stops any water rising any further. The motor would stop working as the terminals would short out if water was present. You must have got water in that plug some other way.

    I have this exact issue on my 2012 mondeo estate, has cost me £500 for a second hand bcm with code cloned from old one then further £250 to get the keys reprogrammed. Now I still need to try to fix the cause, I may try the suggestion of removing the wiring clip from motor and soldering on the wires so the water coming out the pump falls away and does not go down the wires inside on its own by capiliarry action.
    Did you get anywhere talking to Ford as this really should be something they cover due to the pump being faulty to start with?
    My bcm board was badly corroded directly under the pins where the screen wash has come through, with the tell tale blue corrosion. It caused reversing lights to come on and the car gear selector to lock in park.

I opened the front valve holder, but I don't see the green BCM box like in yours. maybe it's in a different position on mine? In the past days the only strange thing I noticed was that the windshield wipers sometimes went on their own without being able to stop them. even with the engine off. I would be very grateful if someone could give me some help?

      Have a good look around it will be under the glove box mate.
      As for the pumps there are 2 one for headlamps one for front/rear screen…. I will say the ones with headlamp washers use a different screenwash bottle and could possibly use a different pump.
      On the issue of wipers and front screen wash not working, you could have a fault wiper stalk
      Thanks

    How can i contact you? Did you manage to solve this? Ive Got similiar problem with smax 2010, ive cleaned the resifues But unfortunately my reverse light do not work, i see some c1120 fault code still. Ive ordered new pump also, will replace it soon.

    • @CarAddictGarageNE

      It was more the reverse lights going mad flashing, i do believe these can suffer issues with the reverse switch, bulbs, fuses and wiring in tailgate to reverse light.
      Usually when BCM totally fails all the electrical systems on the car go mad.

The bulbs are ok, As soon As i choose reverse Gear the fault code comes. I have checked all connections and there are No short corcuits. Do you think that bcm can be broken? Thanks in advance.

      Could possibly be permanent damage to the BCM, but is does seam a very common issue with reverse lights not working on these, be good find out what the cause is if not BCM

    hahahaha omg the water travels up the wire. wow thats must be a powerfull pump. lol

    • @CarAddictGarageNE
      @CarAddictGarageNE  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not powerful just defective that it sends pressurised water through the copper core wire, technical name is capillary action, very common issue years back with oil on oil pressure warning lights, also with diesel off sensors on the HP fuel pumps

    • @paulbriskham5522
      @paulbriskham5522 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Having changed the BCM at large cost I have now disconnected the wire to the headlamp washer pump as that pump is very high pressure for cleaning lights without a wiper so maybe more likely to be the pump that is pushing water down the power wire, but this is only a guess at a possible fix to stop it by happening again.

    • @CarAddictGarageNE
      @CarAddictGarageNE  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t believe the headlamp wash pump has this issue, it’s only the screen wash pump that causes this issue
