      Crazy times my friend up is down and down is full on Woke! It’s like all this labelling/group identities has been set up-to divide is not unite us! The only label people should want is ‘oh, he’s/she’s, really Friendly, Nice, Cool, great To be around etc ..’ the individual is key not their nonsense grouping! To me it’s reverse racism, all blacks are the same. All gays are the same, all White men..the same.... Right. And the social engineers of today know this full well. It's the age old tactic of divide and rule. They want division so that they can cancel individual cultures and rule over a single world (with them ruling). It's a shame so many people buy what _is_ essentially racism claiming not to be (doublethink / cognitive dissonance). And many of the rest are simply scared not to fall in line and agree or fearfully stay silent.

    • @paranoidrodent
      @paranoidrodent 4 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      That one's always made my head spin too. As a rule of thumb, new euphemisms for minorities have a 20-30 year lifespan in English during which time they transition from progressive and inoffensive to becoming offensive (as generations change). Even "coloured" was once a very proper and fairly respectful alternative to the other words in use (as the NAACP's name makes clear). Give it a few decades and black will be verboten while "of colour" will be a slur and BAME will be in poor taste. Changing the euphemisms is a feel-good bandaid that fails to address the underlying issues. Just a painkiller that ignores the cancer of actual racist views by masking them.

    Since I heard the term 'people of colour' I always had a problem with it as it comes across very 'us' and 'them'. There are white people then there are 'people of colour'. How much melanin do you have to have to be a person of colour? If you're seven parts European and one part Caribbean then can you call yourself a person of colour? Is it literally about the amount of melanin you have or is it more about nationality.
    Also, you have Americans, African Americans, Italian Americans, Native Americans, and so on, but if you're going to define what type of US citizen you are then surely all white people in the US should be referred to as European Americans, not just Americans, which should be the word for the natives?
    On top of that how do you define 'colour'? It seems to be a very big thing in the US but I don't get it. In an episode of Scrubs Carla was angry at Terk for thinking she was black, when she was Dominican...what? Wait...so...um. If you're a brown skinned person in America you're generally referred to as black, unless you come from...where exactly?
    It feels like ethnicity, nationality, and melanin concentration are all thrown in a mixing pot.

      Ironically, scientifically black people are without colour (for the most part) and white people would be the most colourful, because the melanin in black people actually absorb the rays, and are therefore black. White people, on the other hand, reflect all colours of the spectrum of visible light equally and as such you get a white colour.
      I'm not arguing for defining things by their scientific/technical definition, don't get me wrong; it's simply a fun thought.
      Personally, I get upset with the perpetuation of races. In my native language, the word for 'race' is what we use for differentiating between the breeds of dogs. Scientifically, different breeds of dogs are far, *far* more different than any two human "races" compared.

    I have a black brother who completely rejects BAME because as far as he is concerned he is British or black British and definitely not a person of colour which he dislikes even more. British or Black British categories are the only categories he recognises. He is married to a Japanese girl and she felt the same level of rejection but they are also not Guardian readers. Also as she pointed out Take China, Japan, Taiwan, India and already the minority ethnic are not such a minority. Also the majority of Russia is in Asia. Priti Patel said it was "patronising." David Lammy the left wing Labour politician said "I'd like to see it scrapped." . Omar Khan said "few people would identify as BAME." Does this mean shock horror The Guardian and BBC are being politically incorrect:)

      We are all 'people of colour' so i always found that a bit. white is a colour, so that thinking is weird.
      I would describe your brother as British. Unless I needed to describe his appearance in which case I would say Black British. But in general if I'm describing someone i know who is black british unless his skin colour or race is relevant to the conversation involving them I dont bring it up.
      If I made a friend who happened to be black. I would just tell people 'I made a friend.' their race is not relevant unless we are describing appearance or ethnicity.
      BAME is an even weirder word than people of colour. I mean if I was on an official programme by the BBC I would probably either that or ethnic minority... Actually whatever happened to 'ethnic minority'? Is it considered offensive now? I thought all it meant was that certain ethnic groups are less of a percentage in the general population than the ethnic majority.

    I’m 18 and most of my online and irl friends are lefties, I’m also a lefty but if I criticise Labour, I end up feeling sort of alienated because then people in my friend group look down on me and make me feel like a bad person. I usually stick to talking about politics online because it gives me time to think through what the other person has said without the added stress of the social nuances required for face-to-face contact (I’m autistic so I struggle with that lol). I think most people mean well when they impose politically correct terms on others, and when they start policing other’s behaviour. It really depends what it is, I think some of the far left just sort of disregard context, like Jonathan Pie alluded to with the LGBTQIA+ and BAME jokes. If someone uses the word ‘tranny’ while making fun of transphobic people, I see no issue, but some would go nuts over it. Anyway, sorry for the rant, politics confuses me and this comment ended up being a stream of consciousness lol. "people of colour" is the new term for black and brown people. It is just one more idiotic American expression based on changing words rather than society. When I was growing up "coloured people" was a common phrase that is now considered offensive. But if you think about it "people of colour is simply a reworking of that phrase. It's also quite odd to say such and such of. We don't say I have hair of red, or people of paleness. It also implies that that pale people have no colour at all as if colour of any kind is some strange attribute not connected with "normal people". It's falsely sensitive and in the end based in the inability of white society to actually make any meaningful changes that will end its beliefs and practices based on notions of supremacy.
