Speaking of how people discredited or talked down to specifically because of their gender; male fragility, toxic masculinity, man spreading, mansplaining. If a woman was to display this associated behaviour they would be treated as an individual. Though if a man displayed this associated behaviour then they would be judged on the basis of their gender with these silly buzzwords. Do that to a feminist and you get accused of this non-existent term. Face it, the only reason anyone would resort to this, is if they're losing the argument.
The problem with mansplaining, like with a lot of feminist concepts, is that it can be applied to pretty much anything a man does by feminists to exert leverage. Man exists in condition feminists dislike - male privilege Man disagrees with feminist - male fragility, misogyny Man says something feminists doesn't like - mansplaining Man does something feminists don't like - toxic masculinity Man lives happily as independent, free-minded person - obvious misogynist who conforms to masculinity because they don't reject it. They should express their emotions more!!! Man expresses emotions about being blamed for things he doesn't do - male fragility The truth is that feminism is a no-win situation for men. Feminists are never going to stop policing men with these concepts. Why would they? If we created heaven on earth, the priests would have the most to lose. I pity the men who have fallen for this totalitarian bilge.
Funny that when Kavanaugh was "emotional" at the Senate meeting because his life was ruined on baseless accusations, all the feminists were shouting that he should resign because he was emotional. Weren't they saying that man should show more of their emotions?

First time I did a TH-cam search on 'Mansplaining' to find out what it was, I found a video of a girl asking men n a college campus to define it. Someone pointed out in the comments she never let them finish the definition before interrupting them to define herself.
As a female computer science student, it does happen to me that people assume I know nothing about computers and explain easy Stoff to me, while that never happens to male peers
I was playing golf once (very dull game, best avoided) and had the amusing spectacle of watching a quite poor player assume the sole female player didn't know anything about golf and begin lecturing her on her swing. She was the best, won the game hands down. It's been at the back of my mind as a perfect example of mansplaining every since.
@@urbanwarrior3470 Very true, probably of every one really. What marks both of the examples here out as a sexist behaviour is the assumption that female peers would either be ignorant of or know less about the topic, in this case golf or computers, based on nothing but their gender.
I used to work at a bookie and yeah, men used to try explaining things to women who were more informed than them all the time. It's a decent way of describing when a woman is assumed to be ignorant because she is female. However, every time I see the word used, it's as a defense for something ignorant the woman has said or as a way to avoid debate. It's just another case of something starting out as a decent joke or phrase then getting ruined by the buzz word obsessed masses.
Women aren’t normally perceived as ignorant unless they behave as such; also what made you think the men who were doing the explanation were less informed, did you just assume they were ignorant?
Juliana Silva did you watch the same clip as me? I saw him repeatedly say women were warriors and far stronger than men, and saying they were better than men. He did not say women were weak, he said the use of “mansplaining” was an attempt for women to identify themselves as a victim when they’re not. He also said several times that he is rude and patronising to everyone, and it’s not because of anyone’s gender. So, what video did you watch, because nothing you’ve said correlates to this video?
@Matt It's not a conspiracy. It's fact that can be backed up with Evidence, 100x over. CNN and Fox, both have Political leanings. Fox doesn't hide it, btw.

Some men may be more likely to be patronising to women merely because of their gender. I'm like that to most people, regardless of their gender. My problem with masplaining (as an unicorn) is that it exists and people try to deny it on the internet claiming to be a woman because they think this gives them more credibility to share their irrelevant opinion on things that men do to women.

People that say things that are offensive are doing so either because they're ignorant or nasty. I'm happy to educate the ignorant, the latter I just ignore. In the early 1980's I met Odette Hallowes, the only female recipient of the George Cross not awarded posthumously. Personally I see the term mansplaning completely overused by the wrong groups which is a shame because it does describe a very real phenomena which occurs often with women in professional situations. Not all biases are conscious, and giving certain actions terms helps us be more aware of our actions and just be more respectful to eachother lmao
I always said people make themselves the “lesser” by acting like they’re so discriminated over nothing. A hitting up but not down scenario, if you can insult but won’t accept it then you’ve put yourself in the down.
Mansplaining is a sexist term used for when a woman doesn't want to actually listen to a man and wants to discriminate because they're a man. Should we invent "womansplaining" as well? Course not, cause THAT would be considered sexist.
Like too often in these socmedia times, a catchy term has obscured a complex problem. Rebecca Solnit, whose Essay "Men Explain Things to Me; Facts Didn’t Get in Their Way" started the whole debate, rejects the term because of its generalizing quality. But that doesn't mean there are not communication assymmetries between men and women - I've witnessed this often enough in Academia, where female Ph.D. candidates are routinely misperceived by older profs as coffeemakers and secretaries and their contributions in discussions slighted. When they (dare) object to this, they're stamped as difficult and uncooperative shrews.
How is connecting the word man, to splaining, implying that men only do this, not sexist? The word condescending already exists. If the reason is because men mostly do this, then I guess that warrants us to use womannagging where woman complain more than they need to. Btw, I'm not even that conservative.
I love this act, as not only does it allow such ‘forbidden thoughts’ to get aired, it gives people permission to discuss them. This is the most divisive western society has been in decades, dividing everyone up via labels defined by birth traits or gender is the most judgemental and fascist thing we could ever do, and yet we do this in the name of equality. Check yourselves.
sluttyMapleSyrup So it’s a meaningful contribution you’re after? Very well. I think that describing these as “forbidden thoughts” is ridiculous. Not only is this appearing on a public television network and on one of the most popular web pages in the world, the very nature of the complaints are completely mundane. I mean I am sympathetic to the notion of “mansplaining” and think there is no shortage of men telling women what they already know, and even I find the term utterly nauseating. Almost as much as this self-congratulatory tosh. You’re not embracing ‘forbidden thoughts’, you’re watching a stand up routine. You aren’t censored, people talk about this shit all the time. You’re not special!
The problem isn't so much mansplaining itself, but the higher level of gaslighting that women endure that attempts to ruin their credibility as responsible, reliable and authoritative persons and professionals. Feminism is not a threat to male credibility, but a challenge to male centered notions of what validity and equality are supposedly about. Ballox to the entirety of what men claim to be equal under battlelike terms of engagement and having been the ones to label, decide, chastize and "pidgeonhole" things really not belonging to them, particularly women's choices, criticisms and bodies. If equality even existed, it would not be a shared existence/experience by any man's lone calling.
Thomas Andrews This isn’t America or Ireland. If a woman wants to get as many abortions as she wants no one will care about anything other than the burden on the NHS. Equality isn’t a notion it is derived from mathematics.
I think this term actually came about from Men explaining women's issues (not just biological) to women as if they don't know more about it (generally) than any man, nevertheless this was super funny!
When reading Solnit's book/ essays, I had the strong impression that I have been in just the same situations many times. That is, having overconfident, usually elder, men explain stuff to me that I actually know better---just that I, too, am a man. Could it be that this phenomenon actually refers to a subset of men who do this to almost anybody, rather than exclusively to women?
Have you never had a woman confidently explain to you all about the world? I mean a woman who you've just met, who doesn't know you, yet who seems to assume they know more about life, or about any issue in the news, than you do? Seems a fairly regular occurrence to me
It's both. I have an ex boyfriend who does this to everyone, unintentionally (and unconsciously until I signal to him that he's doing it to the point of people getting uncomfortable & looking to exit the conversation) - just the way he copes w/ social situations. I've sometimes had to explain to female friends that it's not "mansplaining" in his case. It can sure look like it, but I empathize bc I have a somewhat similar bad social habit (have only tempered it more because I always got sharply more hostile responses for it than men tend to get). In some cases though, you just see it play out in real time very clearly - how the person takes a completely different tone w/ women vs men.
Young Thinker - iuvenis animo Funny how you are able to understand the OP’s inference about the BBC’s allegedly left wing content, but not my inference that he formed that opinion by reading right wing nonsense.
Having an argument on this topic and it's upsetting me. I essentially said I agree we men like to explain things to an annoying degree but it's not always intended to be sexist or patronizing towards women. Sometimes explaining is just explaining and not directed to anyone specifically. The term mansplaining presupposes the idea that men are trying to be antagonistic towards women in a condescending manner or that men's opinions should be dismissed. I asked would women respond the same way if other women made the same criticisms? I'm upset because I would never treat women in such a manner as to silence them for their gender. A comment like "Well you're a women I don't need to hear your opinions" would be offensive so why is it ok to treat men in such a manner? I got backlash because I questioned that narrative, I was told I shouldn't have spoken up. There is an irony in that.
When an obnoxious coworker of mine tried to accuse me of mansplaining, I told her to stop talking down to me and femsplaining. That shut her up very quickly.
the only time I have seen "mansplaning" being used is when a guy disagrees with a females views during discussions and/or when trying to get their point across.
I don't think he understands how the term is actually used; mansplaining is when you explain something to a woman who already understood the thing you are explaining (the assumption being that you think they wouldn't understand the thing because they are a female). I notice guys (especially middle aged ones) doing this all the time, I also notice women doing it sometimes but it is less common.
@@througheverything some are tough some aren't dito for men, my criticism is that manspaining is a feminist attack on men (another one)! There is no need to signal your virtue before explaining what utter nonesense the term is. It was cowardly, I do like JP though amusing guy.
He's not stupid enough to just put women in their place, is he? "Look, ladies, you're generally weaker in most respects compared to men. Biology and history confirms this. I could probably beat up 95% of the women in this audience." That'll just get the feminists riled up further; you've got to appeal to their emotions to be heard.
Women rudely interrupt all the time, but without knowing what the conversion is and without knowing the subject. I spend much time listening to a girlfriend talk, and when I try to add my complimentary thought, in agreement with her discourse, she says, "you're not getting what I'm saying", and won't allow her original thought to be expanded.
Mansplaining is not just being rude and arrogant. It is explaining something to a woman who knows more about it than the man knows. Like a bloke in a pub explaining economics to Christine Lagarde. The problem is that most women don't know what mansplaining is using the definition I have just used because some are too thick to get it.
My class last year (mostly girls) decided to mention mansplaining, they were complaining about it so I decided to call it womanplaining, the act of women complaining.....they didn't like that.....can't think why.
I guess it existed idk in the 50s, but definitely not now! Never experienced! (and no, if it has happened to you like once, you can't give it a name like it's a widespread phenomenon!)
ann amelia even teenagers won't just be rude to you because you're a woman. Teenagers are... Reasonably rude to everyone. They might say other... Less appealing things, which only apply because you're a woman, but that's because they're dickheads but even more amplified by the fact that they're teenagers
Weird I always thought the term 'mansplaining' referred to when a person of knowledge is interrupted and had their point explained to them because the interrupter does not value their intelligence. So for example a female biologist is explaining something and a man of lesser knowledge tried to 'explain it better' to them or others in the room. There's no victim it's just annoying xD Anyone else thought that? I see men doing it to other men as well, but mostly men to women.
Then it is usually a person who is not able to convey properly what she/he is traying to say, and often a more experienced speaker takes the lead. Being an expert doesn't make one the ideal person to explain concepts clearly. To divulge is a completely different talent. Then I believe if an arrogant person (male, in this case) does interrupt women all the time even if he's not capable of explaining anything any better, I doubt he would stop doing that to man. Arrogant people do exist, of both sexes.
@@PaulusCaesar It really isn't because they can't convey it, it's because the other person wants to get their two cents in but just ends up repeating what the other person said. I've both experienced it and have seen it, it happens get over it.
I agree that a lot of times it's just general explaining, but mensplaining is real. A good example is when I've had men explain to me what a period feels like. This doesn't happen often, but it has happened on 3 different occasions, with men who weren't doctors.
Like when women accuse men of not being a "real man," as if they have any idea what being a man is like? Femsplaining at it's best. Oh wait, they're just being obnoxious and foolish and happen to be women, no need to give it a bigoted name.🙄
This is funny. I believe there is mansplanning but the term has been hijacked. It started out as a term for men who try and explain things to women who already specialize in certain things. Like explaining to a woman astronomer what a white dwarf star is. But I see it used just to get pissed at someone you dont agree with.
Altmetalpunk It shouldn’t be called mansplaining then. It shouldn’t have a term. It’s just rude. Man has nothing to do with it as women can do it aswell
Altmetalpunk Yes in that context. It’s still called being rude. If the word mansplaining is based around that concept then that is fair. But the way it’s being used now is known as now is interrupting a woman in a condescending way
Altmetalpunk Yeah you are right. I just don’t think it should be a word now though as that mentality isn’t really present now. It’s more of just interrupting or being ignorant then wanting to be better than women. Although some men are still living with that ideology so I see your pojnt
first of all, victim and weak are not synonymous. A woman does not have to be weak to be a victim of sexism or misogyny. To clear this up: mansplaining is NOT to be used for any instance where a man explains something to a woman; if that were the case, it would be a sexist term. Rather, mansplaining is used for the SPECIFIC cases where a man explains something to a woman (especially in her own area of expertise) simply because he assumes she wouldn't know BECAUSE OF HER GENDER. Sometimes this is a conscious decision and sometimes not. It is not right for a woman to use the word improperly as an attack on men nor is it ok to assume the meaning of it and use it as an attack on feminism. Let's please lift each other up and try to understand each other rather than uselessly discrediting others' concerns
@Axl Dave It is. Sometimes it is an assumption, and sometimes it's an unfair assumption against men. But sometimes it's clear why a man is explaining something, and it's important to open up a discussion about where a person is coming from so we can hear BOTH sides. Personally, I think mansplaining (and this video) are too aggressive and silences other perspectives without giving them a chance.
@Axl Dave kind of presumptuous of you to assume that a person doesn't know something because they are a woman, why dont u try listening to her point instead getting defensive cuz your ego is hurt :(

@@quewntenerif616 It's already a thing? Oh give over. People laugh at us for shit like this. You have an argument with a man and you cut each other off multiple times and shit gets heated. Do that to a feminist and you get accused of this non-existent term. Face it, the only reason anyone would resort to this, is if they're losing the argument.
Anyone who says you're mansplaining is just trying to womanipulate you.
I find this explanation patronising. #patriarchy
The problem with mansplaining, like with a lot of feminist concepts, is that it can be applied to pretty much anything a man does by feminists to exert leverage.
Man exists in condition feminists dislike - male privilege
Man disagrees with feminist - male fragility, misogyny
Man says something feminists doesn't like - mansplaining
Man does something feminists don't like - toxic masculinity
Man lives happily as independent, free-minded person - obvious misogynist who conforms to masculinity because they don't reject it. They should express their emotions more!!!
Man expresses emotions about being blamed for things he doesn't do - male fragility
The truth is that feminism is a no-win situation for men. Feminists are never going to stop policing men with these concepts. Why would they? If we created heaven on earth, the priests would have the most to lose. I pity the men who have fallen for this totalitarian bilge.
Very true.
Funny that when Kavanaugh was "emotional" at the Senate meeting because his life was ruined on baseless accusations, all the feminists were shouting that he should resign because he was emotional.
Weren't they saying that man should show more of their emotions?
Hence MGTOW.
You're referring to second wave feminism. This third wave/new-age feminism is convoluted, retarded and weak as fuck.

You are mansplaining mansplaining
First time I did a TH-cam search on 'Mansplaining' to find out what it was, I found a video of a girl asking men n a college campus to define it. Someone pointed out in the comments she never let them finish the definition before interrupting them to define herself.
As a female computer science student, it does happen to me that people assume I know nothing about computers and explain easy Stoff to me, while that never happens to male peers
snt it easy to turn the tables...?
I was playing golf once (very dull game, best avoided) and had the amusing spectacle of watching a quite poor player assume the sole female player didn't know anything about golf and begin lecturing her on her swing. She was the best, won the game hands down. It's been at the back of my mind as a perfect example of mansplaining every since.
@@phils6582 I think generally men feel empowered when they're being a guide to someone regardless of sex. If its to a woman its mansplaining

Some men may be more likely to be patronising to women merely because of their gender. I'm like that to most people, regardless of their gender. I seem to be more intelligent than most people I communicate with and don't handle it well.

Nah its she-peating when they repeat the same thing over and over

Wow I'm proud of the BBC for posting this. You'd think any form of mainstream media would think this is far right sexism.
How is connecting the word man, to splaining, implying that men only do this, not sexist? The word condescending already exists.

When reading Solnit's book/ essays, I had the strong impression that I
have been in just the same situations many times. That is, having
overconfident, usually elder, men explain stuff to me that I actually
know better---just that I, too, am a man. Could it be that this
phenomenon actually refers to a subset of men who do this to almost
anybody, rather than exclusively to women?
Who taught men how to explain everything in a patronising fashion? - Their mothers.

That is what it means, but that wouldn't make good satire would it
Then it is usually a person who is not able to convey properly what she/he is traying to say, and often a more experienced speaker takes the lead. Being an expert doesn't make one the ideal person to explain concepts clearly. To divulge is a completely different talent. Then I believe if an arrogant person (male, in this case) does interrupt women all the time even if he's not capable of explaining anything any better, I doubt he would stop doing that to man. first of all, victim and weak are not synonymous.
