  • Newzroom Afrika profiles new cabinet ministers with the largest budget but dismal performance. The education portfolio is being described by some as a poisoned chalice. Iman Rappetti talks to Siviwe Gwarube, the new minister of basic education to hear what her plans are to lift the country's education system out of dismal global rankings and propel it to the top of the class.

Consolidation of concepts, not ploughing through a massive curriculum overloaded with assessments. 30 in a class maximum, otherwise it's crowd control. Teach student teachers HOW to teach literacy and numeracy. Children should leave the foundation phase able to read and write and work with numbers. Those teaching student teachers should spend regular time teaching children IN schools to be aware of the challenges. Children deserve teachers who are well trained and passionate about making a difference.

This lady must approach the Unions with the most respect and high hopes. Not with arrogance that she is in charge, or that she will open a bee house for ongoing strikes and problems. She must have a good relationship with these Unions. She must also understand she is not the boss, but a Minister for harmony.

@@AV_2303 well, although I agree that a minister isn't the boss per se, I also don't see why unions must hold the department hostage either. The former minister seems to have let the unions dictate to some degree. Remember unions aren't the bosses either!
What it comes down to is that all these role-players need to work together in the interests of the learners as theirs are paramount.

We need to end pit toilets, we need more school for poor children, we need to get rich schools to share their resources, some of the resources obtained pre 94.. we got to improve the chances of the poor kids, be they black, or white or coloured.. if you start now it will take maybe another two generations to see results.
