Hi, thanks for your question. There's two ways that you could do this. You could charter a vessel for a specific journey and fill this with your clients cargo. Mr. Alan thanks for information and thank you for passing down your wisdom. I have been doing some research and I'm curious, what are the differences if any, between a freight forwarder and a freight broker?
Hi TM, there is no difference actually. It's just down to terminology. In Europe it is known as a Freight Forwarder and in the US it's known as a Freight Broker but they are the same thing performing the same function.
A freight broker, also known as a transportation broker or logistics broker, is a middleman or intermediary that connects shippers (individuals or businesses needing to transport goods) with carriers (trucking companies, airlines, shipping lines, or rail operators) to facilitate the transportation of goods. Unlike freight forwarders who take responsibility for the physical movement of the goods, freight brokers focus on arranging the transportation logistics.
How much money is needed to start a FF business of my own... also, how do I cover liability if I make a huge mistake costing a customer several thousands of dollars in loss of business? Does a liability insurance cover potential mistakes I could make as admin/office mistakes?
Hi WCephei77HD, thanks for the question. As far as how much money do you need to start a FF business it's impossible to give you a fixed answer. There's many costs to consider which are too broad to go into detail here but my overall advice to you is to keep your costs as minimal as you possibly can as you launch. Upfront payments for air and sea freight will be required so you will need to understand your cashflow to handle this. Once you are established, carriers may establish a line of credit for you but this would be later on. Regarding liability, you can insure yourself against this and I advise you to contact an insurance broker in your local country for help, advise and costs. Insurance isn't something I can advise on. Hope this helps.

Hi John, if I’ve understood your questions properly, you’re asking can you change your freight forwarder once you’ve appointed them and the shipment is in process and on its way? That being the case, the answer is no, there is no mechanism to change your freight forwarder once the goods are on board a vessel. Hope that helps.
@@ABTS but the goods haven't arrived the destination freight forwarder warehouse and if seller/ buyer has the ability to update the bill of lading information? We can remove existing freight forwarder and bring on a new one, isn't it?
Hi John, I’m not really understanding the scenario. Feel free to contact us with more detail and I’ll try and help: www.abtslogistics.co.uk/contact-us/
Hi Rohan, age is not a concern in freight forwarding, it boils down to knowledge and contacts. Money - to start with you’ll need to generate a positive cash flow, ie. Getting paid by your shippers before you pay the shipping line/air line. However if your client is buying where the supplier pays for the shipping, all you do is invoice for your services. Hope that’s make sense.
Hi Jossmer, I don’t really, there were books I read many many years ago but these days with so much information online, I think this is probably better.
Hi Joseph, yes indeed. Our courses are designed for beginners, teaching the practical knowledge needed to import and export around the world. Please let me know of any other questions.

Their freight charge is not buyer friendly, too much that is great hinders in costing of import cost. Could you give a solution how can I get reasonable and good rate of cargo container. Thanks Sahin Sarker
Hello! Thanks for your comment. It’s very difficult for me to answer that with one or two sentences. The best advice I can give you is to get some training as you’re completely new to import export. As with anything, if you don’t understand what you’re doing you’re vulnerable to mistakes and loosing money.
Thanks for the information shared with us. I'm hoping to have a personal chat with you, Mr. Bracken. I am interested in starting to have freight forwarding as a self-employed or home-based business. Hi Wissam, the solution for shipping as one consignment different products from different suppliers if they come from the same country is as follows: a) Nominate a freight forwarder in that country b) Purchase your different products on Incoterms FCA your Freight forwarders warehouse c) Instruct your freight forwarder to ship your goods on a LCL (Less than a Container Load ) basis. Hope this helps
Hi Alan, how important is technology in freight forwarding? I'm just wondering as someone with your experience I assume would have had lots of time spent with various IT programmes.
Hi Toby, freight forwarding now is IT driven as you can imagine. Booking cargo, trace-track shipments and plugging in to the supply chain as well of course making customs entries for imports exports. The day of the phone and fax are long gone! Perhaps I’ll do a short video showing how it all comes together online.
Hello I'm a student of the Catholic university institute of Buea in Cameroon studying logistics and transport management wish to know more about the freight Forwarding Business how can I get in touch you sir
Hi MC, I have been looking for Croner's reference book and made contact with Croner's. This shows my age but they no longer have a book but everything is online. I have a link that you can sign up for their free "lite" version here: pages.croneri.co.uk/ON-FY21-ABTS-Partnership-1755_ABTS-Onboarding-LP.html
Hi Maxtools, sorry for the delay. The way to get loads quite simply is by advertising your services online and the usual marketing avenues. There is no shortcut for this I'm afraid.
Hi Alan, this was a wonderful video. Unfortunately, I cannot afford your courses at this time but can you please recommend some books I can read in the meantime? I have no knowledge or experience. Thanks a bunch!
Hi Fart Bubble, thanks for the comment. It's hard for me to recommend a specific book as I've not come across one that details how to start a freight forwarding business but of course there's many books on different aspects of international trade, depending on your interest. Check out our other videos which are all free on our TH-cam Channel as well as our blog: www.abtslogistics.co.uk/blog. Lot's of free information there too.
Hello! Yes most freight forwarding businesses are not at the port with the exception of the very big forwarders. You can always get a freight forwarder at the port if you need representation there.
Hi Taimoor, it would be very difficult indeed to start a freight forwarding company without having a physical presence there. I would not recommend this.
You are generating value let every one know the basics but your prices are out of the blue you would. Be much better off charging an average price because most of people that comes tô you tube they already looking for a Giood price so mathematically if you make cheaper you will sell more but with this prices iam sorry not realistic as you tube provide all information !
Thanks Alessandro for your feedback. A couple of points. I’m based in London, UK and the price of our courses is very, very competitive with other courses in the UK. In fact I would say it’s excellent value as many other training providers charge “per subject”, opposed to our “all in one” courses. Secondly, we offer one-to-one support so I wouldn’t be able to take a high volume of students. I’m 80 years old now and retired, so I’m sure you can imagine I wouldn’t be able to handle the stress of dealing with 50 students at a time, working 50 hour weeks. I limit students to around 10 at any one time. This allows me to spend the time needed with them and keep everything relaxed. Last point, there’s a lot of information on the internet, absolutely true but in my experience, many teachers and lecturers lack the practical, commercial experience. Many have learned the theory in university or other places but never got their hands dirty with the day-to-day of running a logistical business. After 40 years of doing just that, I believe I have the experience to teach my students the practicalities of what they’ll face and how to avoid the mistakes I made. In the end, it saves them time, money and stress! Thank you Alassandro.
Thank you very much for this video! One of my relatives working on "oocl" company and he have very good positions in there, how can i leverage his connection to start this business. I hope will get some good advice from you! Thanks!

Can we change a Freight Forwarder while sailing or once shipment arrived at destination port ?
Feel free to contact us with more detail and I’ll try and help: www.abtslogistics.co.uk/contact-us/

i am 55 years old with no money no exoerienc any chance for me?great video!
Hi Alan I worked in freight forwarding over the past 10 years. Mainly ocean import to the USA. Any books you recommend to expand my knowledge ?
Hi Jossmer, I don’t really, there were books I read many many years ago but these days with so much information online, I think this is probably better.

Dear ABTS Training
I am so glad to be connected with you, I would like to import from China to Bangladesh, but I am totally new in this and sometimes calculate all costing of import cost but bigest problem is supplier give us FOB price a long with when I want to know about container cargo fright fare. Their freight charge is not buyer friendly, too much that is great hinders in costing of import cost. Could you give a solution how can I get reasonable and good rate of cargo container.
Thanks
Sahin Sarker
I have basic background knowledge of freight forwarding and hoping that you can be a mentor for me on how to start this business alone.

Hi Vicky, I can’t help directly but can only advise to do a search for freight forwarders on Google or perhaps ask if any local clearing agents can make any recommendations. Not sure I’ve understood your question correctly but let me know.
@@ABTS hello again sir! Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I’ve been doing this through google and it’s been a month I’ve only gotten 8 containers so far I we as wondering if you know people that You’ve trained in the USA that might be able to help. Thanks so much in advance.

Yes I need your course how
Hi Taimoor, you can find all course details on our website including syllabus and prices: www.abtslogistics.co.uk/.
Hi Alan, can you please explain how you would buy different products from different suppliers and book them all in the one transaction, container etc?
Hi Wissam, the solution for shipping as one consignment different products from different suppliers if they come from the same country is as follows:
a) Nominate a freight forwarder in that country
b) Purchase your different products on Incoterms FCA your Freight forwarders warehouse
c) Instruct your freight forwarder to ship your goods on a LCL (Less than a Container Load ) basis.
Hope this helps
@@ABTS Thankyou Alan for your help!
Glad to be of help.
You could find a freight forwarder they will contact all your suppliers and consolidate them all in one full container

Hie. awesome knowledge here. How can i get Croner's reference book and LLoyd's Loading list
Hi MC, please find Lloyds Loading List here: www.lloydsloadinglist.com
Hi MC, I have been looking for Croner's reference book and made contact with Croner's. This shows my age but they no longer have a book but everything is online. I have a link that you can sign up for their free "lite" version here: pages.croneri.co.uk/ON-FY21-ABTS-Partnership-1755_ABTS-Onboarding-LP.html
Where to get loads ?

Sorry is it possible this business to be operated in big cities
Hello! Yes most freight forwarding businesses are not at the port with the exception of the very big forwarders. You can always get a freight forwarder at the port if you need representation there.
Lloyds Loading List is gone...
Yes indeed, very unfortunate but I have found something similar: handyshippingguide.com/
Can we become FF IN CHINA without being physically there
Hi Taimoor, it would be very difficult indeed to start a freight forwarding company without having a physical presence there.
