Seriously. Do they want me to go buy a handheld mirror just for this exam?

Poor students! Violation of their privacy at its best! She said "dont stress" 🤣☠ some students test wherever they have reliable internet, that is soo unfair. Let me carry my full size mirror to sturbucks, i hope they it doesnt breake!

I totally agree. Not every student have the liberty of having internet at home. Some students can't even afford a personal computer so they have to rent one out from the school, that's if they have enough on stock.

Ok, I need to add my 5 cents here. First, I thought it was clear that the mirror is optional, not required. It is stated that way in the video. It is also clearly stated in the messages I have shared with everyone. Second, I was the first to indicate that I felt for everyone because I know that online education magnifies the huge disparities that prevail in our society. This has been a huge challenge for everyone. But it is an even greater challenge for those who have it the hardest. It is different having to work and study from home when you have great internet service and a top-of-the-line computer as opposed to when you have limited internet access, a not-so-new computer, and perhaps even the added stress of having to share space and access with many others in the same household, and even having to care for older or younger family members. I totally understand that. And that’s why I have tried my best at being flexible and understanding. But there is still a need to have some standards and ensure that some goals are met. The video that Rebeca very graciously made was aimed at providing some guidance and extending a helping hand, to avoid confusion and keep things as simple as possible. That was the goal. Rebeca has been an excellent tutor and I am really grateful for all she has done for the class. And I know that such feeling is shared by many of you. Third, the use of a monitored exam environment is not a violation of privacy. The videos are not made public nor are they released for public distribution at any time. Plus, there is even no permanent copies kept unless it is requested if needed when there is indication of inappropriate behavior. Fourth, UTEP has done its best at providing as much as possible in support of our students. The university provides excellent WiFi access on campus and the library has remained opened and accessible throughout the entire semester. You are allowed to take exams in the computers available throughout our campus. Furthermore, there is no need to rent computers, you can check one out for free for over 24 hours from the library. To the best of my knowledge, there have not been any cases of students requesting loaners and not getting them. And if that ever happened, it would have been nice to be informed of it so that we could have taken some action to fix that issue. Additionally, many students who applied for CARES Act money were able to obtain funds to purchase new computers to be able to have proper access from home. Finally, I simply want to indicate that what I love the most about our institution is how it tries its best at providing access and excellence in education, access by making undergraduate education accessible to our community, excellence by recruiting and supporting professors who are leaders in their own fields to provide top-level guidance and training to our students. That is what our university is all about, and that’s why it’s been widely recognized at the national level numerous times. These have been very challenging times. But we can make the best out of them by making the most out of what we have.

I know the crazy thing is I didn't have to lockdown browser with web cam for my 1314 college algebra or my psychology 2301 classes. I'm taking British literature 2322 which is hard, but I'm getting through it. My biology 1308 class requires lockdown browser with webcam and I hate it. When I'm listening to the online, lectures, take notes and do the daily work, I feel like I can pass it. When it comes to exams though I struggle because how different the questions are worded.

I'm a teacher ,I have a question ? Does respondus record 360 all around the environment while student is taking the exam ?

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

No, Respondus LockDown Browser is limited to whatever the camera used by the system has within its range of capture. However, if the environment check is properly done, it should give enough confidence to the educator that the test is being performed under near-ideal conditions from the point of view of lack of external help. Nevertheless, the most important deterrent from cheating is making any given test being more about understanding, analysis, and interpretation, rather than making it be about plain memorization. The latter encourages cheating. The first one encourages real learning.
