@@roguehobbies I'd love a history of the artists who drew for GW across it's various ages. I know it's not painting but it would still be really interesting. Also as someone who is not as artsy as you it would be cool if you could break down what made their styles unique and what sort of techniques they used. It would be intersting if you showed like evolution of some particularily famous pieces which have been redone throughout the years, like Horus and the Emperor, the panel of mutants with like eye stalks and weird mouths, or the famous xeno's picture from 3rd e showing minor xenos like Kroot and Hrud which would go on to become staple "background characters".

In the mid-late 90s when I worked at a GW store there was a definite move to eliminate the "fun and wacky" elements and focus more on the grimdark ahead of 3rd Edition. Even though we were still playing under 2nd Ed rules on store game nights, my coward of a manager had me tell one of our most enthusiastic community players that he could no longer bring his (perfectly legal) Squats & Guard to the table.
In addition, we were made to repaint many of the Ork models that our store had provided to a huge regional store display. We'd gone with the idea of Flash Gitz in 70s Disco style fashion, with zebraskin and leopard patterns, gold plated guns, all fitting in with the style of flashy Ork mercs for a bit of fun. The other stores loved them, but it came down the line that there was to be no "joke" characters in 40k displays, and to "save the fun for GorkaMorka."

oh man ... I knew the fun had dissappeared from 40k when I got back into 40k with 8th edition and the Ork codex was about green aliens with guns.
Gone was the wacky nature of their faction. It made me sad.
To hear that GW even told stores to eliminate the wackyness somehow makes me even more sad.
'ere we go' and the two 'realm of chaos' books remain the best 40k content that GW has ever produced.

One of my favorite opponents (Jim Murphy) was the epitome of "fun/silliness" that would certainly rub and GW store manager the wrong way. Bloodbowl Wood Elves named after the Green Bay Packers with his almost untouchable blitzer Branch Farve? Yep. His Gorkamorka mob called "The Orkula Corp" with vehicles painted in desert camouflage pattern with the palm tree insignia in white paint (sans the swastika)? Yep.
Great guy that certainly wasn't a power/competitive gamer but a real pleasure to face off from the other side of the table.

also when they started to purposely make flawed pots to reduce the shelf life of their paints. The newest pots reef even when still sealed (reefing is when the paint starts to evaporate and leaves a ring of dried paint at the top of the pot) They refuse to move with the times and start using dropper bottles, and this is the reason why. They want to make you have to buy more paints.

Massive props for using the end theme from the Raccoons as the theme for Killer Eggs on Trikes.
If I remember correctly, GW took 2nd edition Epic off the shelves in about 1997. About 18 months later they relaunched it as Epic 40,000, but the Squats were not included. So while Epic lasted until around 2007, I don't think the Epic Squats made it out of the 90s.

August 1999) in which he explained they couldn't make them interesting. He also said that when they do return in the future they wouldn't be called squats! Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it :)

I think that the basic problem with Squats is that GW kept giving away their key traits to other factions. For example they turned Orks from obnoxious brutes into wacky crazies, taking away the original Squat trait. Then after they turned Squats into fantasy Dwarves in Space they ended up giving it away again, by turning Space Wolves into fantasy Dwarves in Space. That way they creatively ran the faction into ground.

I absolutely love the idea of the original Squats. I have many, MANY of the old metal models and have made homebrew codexes for every edition since 6th Edition that my friends allowed me to mess with in our games up until the release of the Leagues of Votann.
I love the Votann as well, but there will always be a spot in my heart that is left wanting for an update of the old Squats as an army in 40k, and not just a Necromunda gang (although I own a ton of them as well, LOL, and approve of their presence in the game).

When their mining vessels break warp, the any who see them are bewildered by the sheer saturation of colors that face them. As synthesized musical technobabble comes over the voxhailers all know who approaches. The gnarliest, most radical, stoked and stacked short kings, Capt. Khyrk’s Slamma Jammas.

Great video as usual. I have a tremendous amount of nostalgic affection for the original WH40K Rogue Trader book. I bought it in the summer of summer of 1988 when I found it in a second hand bookshop (I'm old AF) and to this day still dive into it from time to time. But must admit, I don't have much love for the old metal minis. Even back then I though they were mostly just ugly blobs, and only bought them as they were needed to play the actual game. What I do love is the enthusiasm and passion Louise brings to this channel. The joy simply leaps off the screen, and never fails to make me smile. Not to mention the fantastic skills as an artist on display. I do find it very interesting that younger people have a lot of interest and affection for the old metal models. Good to know miserable old gits like me haven't put them off 😄

I would love a video like this regarding the Chaos Dwarves, which we all know and love, and which have periodically gone away and come back and gone away again throughout the course of GW's existence.
Alternatively, maybe a video looking into some of the aspects of the original Rogue Trader release that we would consider strange today, like grots being able to wield Eldar shuriken rifles and the general... blend-y-ness of the whole thing, where armies and their respective stuff weren't quite as rigidly segregated as they are today.
Love your channel, please keep it up! You are amazing!

I played WH40K rogue trader in late 80s and early 90s. I didnt play squats, but my brother did. So I have fond memories about these fun stout guys. And I remember they could be hard to krack because, my brothers tactics was just to buy alot of heavy weapon squats and stand in defensive formations and blast everything to pieces. fun times.
But when the squats suddenly disapeared I always wondered what the idea was, 40K was obviously fantasy in space, so you cant take away the space dwarves! Heresy!
I was actually writing, planing and started modeling a short animated movie to show how the squats was killed off. It never got finished (sadly). a decade later I made a "unofficial Squat Codex" for 2nd and later editions (I also did small codexes for Genestealer Cults and Chaos Patreon specific traitor legions) based on old things, and new ideas. This squat codex was mostly made so that friends in my group could play their squat models in later editions. But strait around that time, my brother sold his Squat army (it was rather large for that time), to a friend, who never played it. Then some years later he sold it to finance a new army. Sadly.
I still have some original Chaos Squat miniatures (for my Chaos army). But its just a squad.
So anyhow, even though I never realy owned or realy fancied squats, I always thought they where a major part of 40K. League of Votann is quite okey, but I think I hade some rather good ideas in my earlier codex, like Monowheelers and things.
Love the video, I knew most things, but didnt realise before now that most Squat character names where named after gun/firearm brands. ;)
    Cheer.

Oh my god I love these types of videos; model range retrospectives are so underrated in the 40k youtube space, please keep going with these!! If you could do one on the history of Ork models (including forge world additions) throughout the years, that would be absolutely fabulous!!

I'm still waiting on Ostrich Man and Horse-Horse who deserve not only a video but also a bizarre animated series with a sung theme song "Ostrich Man, Ostrich Man, worst parts of both collide, Human flaws and birdlike traits, together they reside. Horse-Horse, Horse-Horse, a horse with dual might, One body joined with another, a majestic sight."

Still remember getting mocked at a games day in the 90s when I asked if the squats were coming back

Really enjoy all content from my favorite “Manic Pixie Dream Girl” (MPDG) creator!

I read years ago another story that the ownership of the squats belonged to Brian Ansell. The old story was as he was literally walking out the door they brought him paperwork to sign them over to GW and he laughingly declined. Jervis's article always sounded corporate after reading about this supposed exchange. Long story short (pun intended) i loved the old range and i am glad to see GW make a revised faction. Loved the video! Id recommend the Zoats 2nd edit Tyranids for new content

I collected Squats in the early 90's. I managed to incorporate some into my Imperial Guard. I have two small platoons of the plastic infantry. I also have a squad of Mole Mortars and a squad of Thudd Guns which I proxy as mortar squads. I may proxy a Trike Squadron as Sentinels. Their armored support is a battery of Basilisks. The models are definitely fun. For lore I presume them to be from an Imperial world. My Imperial Guard are a regiment made up of remnants from multiple guard regiments. The various units retain their original markings but belong to the 501st Amalgamated.

I’m an absolute sucker for oldhammer in every form, my favourite GW game is still Necromunda ‘97. I’d love you to do more oldhammer stuff, this ‘history of’ style content is wonderful. Please keep it up, your work so far has been stellar! 🎉🎉

Possible Topic: Nick Lund’s Chronicle Miniatures. The 1980s Ogres you never knew you needed. Or knew about, really. Lovely red blister packs. Oh, and your channel is simply splendid.

So much love for this video. Really enjoying the mix of Oldhammer/History and painting on the channel, and you can’t beat a video about Squats, the multipart plastic set is one of my earliest 40k memories.

Old necromunda model such as the spyrers would be great to see. Love the fact you took the art with the slam sector board

As someone who got into Warhammer as a kid in the 90s all of this stuff is awesome. The history of GW is undercovered on TH-cam and you fill that niche well! Keep it up!

I love old metal minis, they're so well sculpted and full of character. People don't really appreciate a solid metal mini that requires no assembly, just minor cleanup (if any) and you can start painting. Some of the Eldar ones are particular favorites, since they look so alien and might really shine with your paintstyle!

I could have watched 20 minutes of that turn table shot of that squad of squats. The sculpts are delightfully but your painting skills are incredible each one had little details I couldn’t stop looking at.

Squat armies in Epic were awesome, nothing like rampaging across the battlefield with the Land Train
