the fact that this mini painting class idea also includes practice for other important skills like public speaking and communication is so damn awesome
That's a very good point. As a kid, teenager and even now as an adult, public speaking is ruff. But linking it to a fun activity in a safe place (not school) is a great idea.
My son quikly got interested in warhammer when he saw me reading white dwarf. He loves Space Marines, Stormcast and orcs. He talks about it in school so much that his teacher asked me what warhammer is. He also screams waaaagh when he plays football. I gave him my old stormcast minis. Me and my son (age 6) paint together some times :) he is in love with warhammer now :)
My kid is 4 and gets occupational therapy for his hands. One day he was painting a toddler craft project and I sat next to him and painted the fishing goblin, and he wanted to paint models! I found that Reaper minis are really great for really little kids: I help him assemble them and then he can paint them, build strength in his hands and make things he’s very proud of has been a huge for building his confidence, spending time together and sneaking some extra OT his way. Reaper minis are durable and cheap and we pick models like characters in his picture books, and he loves painting trolls, dragons, etc. Thanks for the inspiration! Great video btw. Appreciate your unrelenting positivity
I think it was just on the most recent episode of Juggz, either Rob or Peachy were saying that it's no surprise little boys think Nids are cool, they're "space dinosaur bugs".
For me it was little printed monsters from Grumpii and my twins love to pain them. I tried to teach them a bit and my boy gave up immediately, he is 3, I don't blame him xD
It has been some years, but I spent about a decade teaching younger kids, too--Louise, you clearly have a great intuitive feel for how to encourage and keep the kids engaged without overwhelming and also (really important) without condescending. It also doesn't hurt that your enthusiasm for painting and creative expression in general is so genuine and infectious--great job; fun video!!
Parent and educator here, came by to give this video a bit more engagement after hearing your comments on how this video (which I've watched twice on my personal channel) wasn't doing too hot. You are doing a spectacular job, and getting kids into artistic hobbies is something we should encourage more!
Have 3 foster kids. Got them to try a few minis. Two of them failed and went right to the paint blobs and only want to paint when someone else is. The middle child liked it and is actually decent for 8. He painted a 3d print horror first, but he’s now gone on to paint several battletech mechs and he’s working on some generic D&D minis.
I think focusing on the storytelling aspect is a great angle for appealing to kids, and I've seen it be effective with my son. I still can't get him to finish a full smooth base coat, but he absolutely loves thinking about the story behind his modelling/decorations. He modelled his Intercessor Sergeant looking down at his auspex while absent-mindedly firing his pistol the other direction, because he thought it was fun that his sergeant was too busy to focus on blasting tyranids. We were making a foam hill the other night, and he wanted to smash some divets into it to represent blast marks. He's even done his first kitbash and used some clay to sculpt a snail with a marine helmet as the shell. He says it's a Nurgle snail. I'm sure the technical ability (and fine motor skill) will come later, but for now I'm just glad that he's still invested into it and having fun telling stories.
I'm one of those parents fortunate to have children who are really interested in minis and painting. its great to have that one on one time with them doing a hobby that don't involve screen time. i also run a mini painting workshop at a school and its just amazing to see them getting stuck in.
I played with unpainted models for years. It took me far too long to figure out that a successful paint job does not have to be a masterpiece and it can be as easy as you want it to be. This is exactly the type of enthusiasm and advocacy the hobby needs! Thanks for sharing!
Love this video Louise, thanks for putting so much effort into it. I've really enjoyed teaching my kids about painting, we started just spraying up some old dinosaur toys and hotwheels cars and painting those and now they've progressed onto "real" miniatures. It makes me proud how proud they are of what they've done.
Last week I was telling some colleagues about how wonderful the mini-painting community is. And then you launch this! Looks like I'm going to have to pitch the local art centre a new summer activity! Thank you for sharing this with us.

ive been doing battle tech stuff with my kid since the minis are quite durable, and cheap. Ideal for a 4yo. Also painting jurassic world dinosaur toys is good fun, too.
I used to teach cooking skills to young people: the weirdest thing I came across often was them not knowing if they were left or right hand dominant, and not having fine manipulation or grip skills when it came to tool use. We reckoned it came down to only using tablets and controllers, rather than pens and knives so anything that helps with these fundamentals is to be lauded. Well done!
I just shared this with the organizers for a convention I work with as inspiration for a learn to paint minis program we might be able to put together.

i like the story board and naming of the miniature first that is a good idea. Thank you Louise. I shall get my 3 little tykes to do this next time before miniature painting. Great video and the first of its kind that ive seen. Im surprised GW doesn't do a young kids painting starter set
This is a wonderful video, really enjoyed it and daughter (7) had fun too (she was jumping up and down with excitement at the new resident of Rascal Town and loves your fishing goblin). We already paint together, but there was still lots of great ideas I took from this such as getting printouts to colour in first. She really wants to paint her Rockgut Truggoths and a friend actually shocked us with getting Trugg for her birthday so getting some drawings to help express herself with colour before she starts, even if I have to draw them myself, I think would really help her. She always ha sa story for and is really proud of her minis and contrast paints work brilliantly with kids so cant wait to see what she does.
The brief talk and demonstration better last max 8 seconds or I lose her😂 she wants me to paint rainbow marines for her. She’s 6. Great video thank you
Brilliant vid, thanks for doing it! I'll be tweaking my pledge tier at some point to get all the goodies for the class for sure. I think the structure it'll add to painting sessions with kids could really help them get more from it.
hey, loved the video. My son (3) expresses a loooot of interest in painting minis. When I paint I tend to show him the development and the resutls. Last time, we went to the warhammer store together and the sellsperson gave him a few minis (2 stromcast eternals and a space marine). He painted an eternal, choosing his own colors. it certainly looks like a 3 years old painted it.I was smart enough to give him an older brush, the poor thing. I gave him a mini holder, but I found everything to be too small for him I was thinking GW minis are not that great for him. I knew of your mini range, but I never considered it to help my kid... I might jump into our store very soon. chrismas is coming :)
Louise, this is amazing. My eldest is only 3 so we're not there yet. I hope you're still going strong in a few years when she'll be able to give it a go!

Thank you for being that dedicated in spreading optimism and joy into children hearts. In such a desperate world you are a ray of light for all hobbists. Keep being yourself and we wish you all the best !
This is fantastic to watch, right, now to practice on my 8 and 4 yr old! :D
painting D&D minis is always a great babysitting tool as well plus keeps them away from the tv and tablet for a while btw i picked up your signature series monument hobbies paint
Brilliant video. Inspirational. Thank you 🎉
i like the story board and naming of the miniature first that is a good idea. Thank you Louise. I shall get my 3 little tykes to do this next time before miniature painting. Great video and the first of its kind that ive seen. Im surprised GW doesn't do a young kids painting starter set
Love this for my kids!
Thank you for covering this topic! I have a tiny nephew who is only 1, but I will refer back to this video in the future once he's a bit older.
In Grim Darkness of the 21st millennium, there is only.... wholesome content introducing kids to their artistic potential.
I cant wait to try this! Also the gnome is so cute
Bless your heart. This is so awesome!
She’s 6. Great video thank you
I should really paint one of these goblins. They are staring at me from a shelf.
I'm sure every child would love to have Louise as their art teacher.
Brilliant vid, thanks for doing it! I'll be tweaking my pledge tier at some point to get all the goodies for the class for sure. I think the structure it'll add to painting sessions with kids could really help them get more from it.
Thanks Louise, great vid!
Glad you liked It 😁
Looove this. Now i wanna do a workshop in my area…
hey, loved the video.
