It's the perfect Magneto imho. His mannerism, superior intellectual and persuassive discourse makes him a beliavable villain. I know Fassbender is truly good in the character as well, but sadly his suits are no contest for McKellen's long black suit and cape plus his helmet makes him look impossing. Probably the best superhero character ever designed for X-Men by 20th Century Fox (aside from Deadpool and the final X-Men suits from Apocalypse)

Humans only validated Magneto's arguments to fear humans targeting mutants when they turned the cure into a weapon in "Last Stand." He is understandably portrayed as a villain for most of the original trilogy, but he was spot on about the cure being weaponized and immediately used against them.

I always assumed that but I think maybe in the comics the explanation is that he also moves himself relative to magetic fields, it's the reason the guards couldn't pull him back when he was latched onto the fence. So he can literally latch onto the earth's magnetic field and levitate himself. I think they go with that explanation in the prequel movies.

Sir Ian McKellen made me love Magneto. As powerful as the Phoenix is, I think most of the showstoppers belong to Magneto, probably due in part to the seeing a man levitating gigantic objects while floating through the air, but probably also due to McKellen’s masterful performance.

(Also, Michael Fassbender is too Irish for the role, and he looks more like Matt Murdock/Daredevil)

Not really, when Magneto used the device in its first appearance his hands burn and become attatched to it, Mystique has to pry him off because his hands are stuck. Seems pretty impossible to escape if someone as masterful as Magneto becomes overwhlemed and literally held too it.

It's interesting, having primarily grown up in the era of comics Magneto being an anti-hero or kind of morally grey anti-villain, which is also how Fassbender mostly portrayed him in the movies more recent in my memory, i forget how much of a true classic old comics full on villain Mckellen portrayed him as.
His powers are as strong as needed for whatever scene. He can stop bullets firing out of hundreds of guns, but he can't stop one shard of metal from piercing himself.

Vibranium has very interesting characteristic, the shield of Captain America and Black Panther costum can absorb literaly any energy and reflect back, it is not strong, but quite flexible enough to make a costume from it. BP claws also cut any metal, but they way that works is not due to its hardeness, but ability to absorb metal electrodes, and disintegrade the metal structure, so when BP cut metal, he doesn't use much force. Only few people know how to work with Vibranium, it is a very difficult metal to craft anything without specific technology. As shown in the movie ppl in Wakanda use energy to turn off Vibranium property to work with it like a normal metal. And you can't use it to coat Wolverine skeleton, it would reflect absorbed damage back right inside his body. Adamantium has more traditional metal property, it is simply very strong, virtually indestructable, very hard, you need to put force to cut anything with it, and because when you mix Vibranium with steel it will stay liquid before solidified as long as you keep the proper condition, making it possible to inject it inside Wolverine body, hard to see how would they do that with Vibranium, you can't melt Vibranium, it would absorb heating energy and reflect back. It is unknown how they mix vibranium and steel to create adamantium, in movie we only see liquidied form of the alloy, which if solidified, would not be possible to make it liquid again and very hard to destroy. In term of strength, Vibranium can't be destroyed, it absorb any kind of energy directed at it, but it is not a hard nor dense metal. Adamantium is very strong alloy, very hard to destroy, but still can be broken using another adamantium, like how Silver Samurai cut Wolverine claws with Adamantium katana.
