I think realistically you could pick almost any scene in the entire movie he's in, but I think this might be Heath's greatest. The end, especially, where he's laughing maniacally while being pummeled in the face was chilling. You truly feel like he's still in total control, even while Batman is beating the shit out of him, and he is.
3:46 That laugh always gives me chills. Heath Ledger asked Christian Bale if he could really punch him hard to make the acting more convincing, and oh boy does it pay off. The fact that it has been said 1000000 times doesn't make it less true: Heath Ledgers performance was legendary and will be remembered for generations to come. Christopher Nolan truly made a masterpiece of modern cinema and it really deserves every praise it gets!
Nathan Luz It was definitely a legendary performance by Ledger but even if it was the best actors in the world a bad director can ruin the movie. Like Justice League as an example if they had the Wonder Woman director direct it, the movie probably would have had a better chance of being a big hit.

Watching this doing corona outbreak. And Joker was right. Watching “civilized peoples” fighting over toilet paper really shows that people are only as good as they are allowed to be.
Introduce a little anarchy and everything turns to chaos. Was thinking the same exact thing about the whole Corona virus and what the joker preaches about society. So true.
@@Uji_Metal where is your source for that please? so far i have heard no experts talking about any viable treatments for it. You also contradict yourself. If this was working why would they both be hoarding it and OVER prescribing it and given too much away. Your comment makes no sense really.
Ledger’s portrayal is often considered the definitive version of the Joker. His performance earned him a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He captured the character's chaotic nature and unpredictability, making him a memorable and chilling villain.
+Mustafa Adaglu And that is really the ONLY aspect where Affleck's Batman is superior. His Bruce Wayne was terrible and his Batman was actually what Bale's batman would be if he listened to this Joker. Someone who's entire concept of "good" has been obliterated by hardship. And for me that's what makes Bale's batman superior or at least morally stronger.
I consider the average blue collar worker to be insane, while the joker seems to be high off of the truth of the world, more sane than anyone who willingly part takes in the system
"You have NOTHING! Nothing to threaten me with all your strength!" It was at this moment that the Joker won. It took everyone else the rest of the film to realize it.
He didn't say "nothing to threaten me with all his strength" he said "You have NOTHING! nothing to threaten me with nothing to do with all your strength" Just saying not hating
This is only new information if you refuse to learn human history. Think the Germans weren't civilized before Hitler? They were one of the most cultured countries in the world. Or Japan before the rape of Nanking? People do horrible things to other people, especially when convinced they are the superiors, or acting on fear over another.
Anyone with common sense and a basic understanding of human nature will figure that out. You can get people to kill their own children when the right button is pushed. Just look at the starving people. Some will kill for a piece of bread while other people become cannibals.
@@abishek1910 allow me to explain. "Depending on the time" implies the bomb has started ticking and once it's done, it'll blow up and "he may be in one spot or several" meaning he'd have already been blown to bits
if he didnt die, the "Dark Knight Rises" movie script would have been entirely different and MUCH better. I'd like to think that the 3rd movie would have been similar to the "Dark Knight Returns" comic book. except Bane replaces the Mutant gang leader and his chaos would have unintentionally released the Joker and, like in the comic book, the Batman and Joker would have 1 final confrontation with the latter dying.
The idea that people think Heath was amazing in TDK because he passed is such a cop out. Compare just this scene alone versus Leto's performance in SS. The caliber here is of another level; it's painfully clear. My opinion of Heath's Joker is unbiased from his death, because I was one of the few people living under a rock and wasn't even aware that Heath had died until some time after I'd watched the film; but I was captivated for every second of his screen time. No doubt it's coveted much more due to his passing (naturally), but the quality of the performance is unquestionable. What seems to get past people is how much Heath invested in creating what we saw on-screen. He kept a 'Joker diary' and had music to get him fully in the mind of portraying this character; there's an interview of Eckhart talking about his experience doing the hospital scene with Heath. They improvised the entire blocking of the scene without ever saying a word out of character - the way he talks about it is akin to working with a legend. Seriously, look it up; Aaron Eckhart on Heath Ledger with Larry King. He treated this role with the intensity as if it was actually the last performance of his life...and it shows. By god does it show.
@CrimsonNerd So anikin skywalker is just dumb easy to manipulated and annoying kid who dont like sand and lose because he cant jump higher ... huh ? I except more from anikin to darth vader.
"You have nothing.. Nothing to threaten me with.. Nothing to do with all your strength." -- This line always gets me. The batman has joker in a closed room and in his hands but he is still the inferior guy and the Joker holds the upper hand even though he is locked in the police station with the batman. An excellent example of how joker exploits the only rule that batman has in his favour.
Whoever composed the soundtrack for this movie was deservingly awarded. Every time the Joker appears the sound changes into this uncomfortable buzzing sound that slowly gets higher pitched. It made the audience uneasy, it made them want to leave the theatre. It made them unable to stand the Joker's presence.
Rworld Watch the behind the scenes. Hans Zimmer, specifically, talks about how it's broken down in a lot of detail. In addition, there are other subtleties of the music that he layers with The Joker.
That laugh when Batman is beating the joker is haunting. Once in a lifetime do we get that kind of acting. RIP Heath. Joaquin is great but this joker will never be topped

I prefer to think that this version of the Joker is the super sane version. He’s got everything completely figured out and no one else is on his level. Brilliant.
Fun Fact: In Arkham Asylum: a Serious House on a Serious Earth, Joker's doctor could not diagnose him with any mental illness, and eventually came to the conclusion that he is actually somehow beyond sane, coming up with the term "Super-Sanity"
Jokers final joke in the movie Joker mentioned “the society that banishes him and treats him like trash” meaning that he implied that they live in a society
@Deutscher Geist or how we all coexist only coz there r laws & would tear each other apart if there was no law & order, think of it, we only follow traffic rules coz they exist & if they didn't we wouldn't even be as organised as animals plus if a situation arrives where we have to kill parents we wouldn't even hesitate so that's how fucked up we r hence joker is right about us
+Richard Authemeb yeah he actually kind of lost it there. He was already a bit loose in the head, and then he was seriously on Meth at the same time he got so intensely into this role, he went full blown crazy after this. Im surprised he didn't actually hurt some people
I love the fact that we don't know how long joker was in that room before the scene started. How long he was sitting in the dark because I'm sure he must of felt Batman behind him.
the joker did have a plan. He told Harvey that he didn't have a plan as a way to fuck with him and in some ways to fuck with the people watching the movie too. That's the thing with the Joker, you cant tell if hes trying to really fuck with the viewers as well as the characters.
He went to the address to save Rachel but the Joker intentionally flipped the addresses so Harvey was at the location he said Rachel was at and Rachel was at Harvey's, so Batman ends up saving Harvey.
That's the point, it doesn't matter if Batman is pissed, he outplayed and broke his image of invincibility. Maybe not mentally broken but he killed Rachel so he deeply affected him mentally anyways.
even sometimes actors "miss" and actually hit the other ones. Its part of the job. Everyone knows its not "intenteded" but its cool to know it was an actual real punch haha
@@jevilz9858 I've been "there" its "funny" because of how proffesional actors are and just keep acting instead of "interrupting" the scene. I think its cool
The Joker wants to break Batman. It's brilliant because he mixes Rachel and Harvey's addresses, so whoever Batman wanted to save. THAT person would be the one to die
I can relate to joker because this is the kind of fucked up shit that I would have liked to have done to my ex girlfriend. Does it makes sense why I wanted to? definitely yes. But is it the right thing to do? No.
Elijah Williams I like the way the good guy has lost all discipline and has absolutely no self control, while the bad guy has all the restraint here. He's giving the good, civilized guy an absolute fit lmfao
I don't think he lied! I think the men switched it up by accident! The Joker says he is a man of his word! Batman choosing was important to him, which is why he tells two-face he didn't mean too kill her! But then again he is insane, true and lies mean nothing!
I can watch this scene over and over again. Very powerful, Heath's performance was pure genius. I put this movie is on my top five greatest movies of all time. Hans Zimmer did a masterful job with the score.
"I'll show you, when the chips are down, these... these civilized people? They'll eat each other. See, I'm not a monster, I'm just ahead of the curve." Joker spoke the ugly truth .
Drongorius he not only spoke the truth he hit the nail on the head...regarding people, men & soldiers. And since the civilization is ruled by women now so to speak....its either conform(slave) or get the hell out of dodge until we need you.
People don't realize all he wants is chaos, what he wants is pure anarchy, all of the things he said are bullshit, but you 12 year old edgie pieces of shit should try to live in places fucked up like the joker decribes, like Africa
Compared to this joker, Jared was terrible. Such a legendary character and WB just did their own thing with him and ruined him. Now we have to deal with it throughout the DCEU
Tbh, Jared Leto has potential as joker, to create a new joker. We just didn't get enough screen time with his joker to see it. I agree though I loved this joker.
Fun fact: when the joker says “he may be in one spot or several” he is referring he could be in one piece or a million when he is blown to bits. Literally just noticed that too, so he really was telling the truth when he said that
If you think that's novel, how about how Joker gave opposite locations of Rachel and Harvey? Batman goes to where he's told Rachel is and finds Harvey instead. Again, none of this is hidden or hard to notice but 🤷
This is why the character is easy to write. The problem is actually convincing people about reality. It's relevant no matter where we live because the jokers entire character is coming from a flawed background and understanding humanities greatest flaws. His additional mental health issues push him to knowing how to trigger these behaviours. Heath ledger's joker isn't groundbreaking in writing, it's the acting that convinces us that he's right even though we all know it's true. It's essentially the difference between telling and convincing. I can tell you about climate change, but it won't mean anything unless I can convince you.
This is the greatest acting performance of all time by Heath Ledger. The greatest villain of all time no question. Just perfection that cannot be duplicated, only compared to.
Though Heath Ledger's performance is the absolute standout within this movie there is one instance in Christian Bale's performance as Bruce Wayne that really stands out to me in this scene. Right around the 3:55 mark, when The Joker proclaims "you have nothing, nothing to threaten me with, nothing to do with all your strength," Bale portrays a perfect balance of complete and utter rage with something else that we had never seen in the Batman until this point: true fear. The fear that comes with being completely helpless to the next event. Right there, Batman knows he has already lost to the Joker. Nothing he can do to him can stop him.
SAX MASTER Joker always pushes Batman to kill him. But Batman won't kill him lol. Honestly Batman is just as crazy as joker. They are like two puzzle peices that go together. Both had to have traumatic past just ened up on two different sides because of it.
Obviously, this writing is stellar. But there's a reason this dude won an Oscar, and it wasn't because he died after the greatest performance of his career. It was because of this scene. The others, as well, of course, but primarily this scene. He was so invested in this character he had Bale literally punch him "as hard as Batman would" and laughed through it.
Luke vanDillen You do realize there's such a thing as reading a comment you're posting on, right? Bale actually punched Ledger, at his request, in this scene. Not a lot of even the best method actors would do that.
Just something about that laugh at 3:48 that always gets me. Man is literally outing the jokers head through a wall and smashing him up and he doesn’t even care. All he cares about is torturing batman and watching him lose control is so satisfying and you can tell he loves it which is so crazy because if someone flipped me and out my head into the wall I would not be laughing.
You know I was watching American Psycho recently and realized Christian Bale is not only good at playing the Batman, but could probably play a damn good Joker too.
Great acting by Bale, just brilliant. Ledger is loud and scary, Bale is subtle, scary and tragic figure as Batman here. Love how he delivers ''where are they?! '' - real, raw rage, rage I've never seen before in any version of Batman. Also I love the changing light&emotions in Bale's eyes, he is acting with his eyes behind this mask. Bale WAS Batman and Bruce and his voice is great - rewatch his ''I'm Batman'' from Begins - it's perfect. And this scene here, is just amazing. Two brilliant actors feeding off each other.

Rsimms27 agreed. A bad director can ruin good acting.
I also heard that Heath Ledger asked Christian Bale to actually beat him up in this scene
Rsimms27 Okay. Nolan was not a bad director in my opinion...
elmertjee it really is a quality film, a social commentary , everybody did a fantastic job, Heath really showed his potential as an actor and really stands out because he had never done something like this prior to this film
Watching this doing corona outbreak. And Joker was right. Watching “civilized peoples” fighting over toilet paper really shows that people are only as good as they are allowed to be.

Ledger’s portrayal is often considered the definitive version of the Joker. His performance earned him a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He captured the character's chaotic nature and unpredictability, making him a memorable and chilling villain.
'These civilized people will eat each other'' - This man is not a psycho. He knows the truth and is being honest.

Heath was by far the greatest super villain actor of all time and if he didn't die it would have been amazing
wow really
He did, I never heard that, but I know he was a fan of Heath's work, he mentioned that when he won an award for There Will Be Blood.
Honest question, do you think its amazing because he died?
if he didnt die, the "Dark Knight Rises" movie script would have been entirely different and MUCH better.
“They’re only as good as the world allows them to be”

An excellent example of how joker exploits the only rule that batman has in his favour.

A psychopath without a motive is the most dangerous one.
You have nothing, nothing to threaten me with.
But joker did have a motive
***** he wanted to trigger anarchy and chaos in Gotham by bringing out the worst in the best, in this case Harvey Dent.
the joker did have a plan. He told Harvey that he didn't have a plan as a way to fuck with him and in some ways to fuck with the people watching the movie too.
That's the thing with the Joker, you cant tell if hes trying to really fuck with the viewers as well as the characters.
Joker said it himself hes a dog chasing cars, wouldnt know what to do if he actually caught one
Heath ledger made this movie.
So did Aaron Eckhart!
Where did Batman go?
He went to the address to save Rachel but the Joker intentionally flipped the addresses so Harvey was at the location he said Rachel was at and Rachel was at Harvey's, so Batman ends up saving Harvey.
Without a doubt.
Eckhart was terrific but Ledger was the foundation of this movie; without the latter, the movie would not have been as epic as it was.
at 3:47 Joker knew that he broke him. He found which nerve to hit (Rachel)
Batman looked pissed and that you don’t wanna do
exactly, such a great shot because he knows at that point he controls Batman.
Joker didn't break batman at all he just pissed him off, batman was really considering killing him

Yeah that wasn’t layered, that was the only thing that could’ve meant
He also said depending on the time as in a time bomb
If you think that's novel, how about how Joker gave opposite locations of Rachel and Harvey? Batman goes to where he's told Rachel is and finds Harvey instead.
Again, none of this is hidden or hard to notice but 🤷
Why Heath Ledger's Joker is so great? He talks about real world problems, and it is relevant no matter what time we live.
Not relevant to me sadly.

SAX MASTER DAMMMM

SAX MASTER Joker always pushes Batman to kill him. But Batman won't kill him lol. Honestly Batman is just as crazy as joker. They are like two puzzle peices that go together. Both had to have traumatic past just ened up on two different sides because of it.
Obviously, this writing is stellar. But there's a reason this dude won an Oscar, and it wasn't because he died after the greatest performance of his career. It was because of this scene. The others, as well, of course, but primarily this scene. He was so invested in this character he had Bale literally punch him "as hard as Batman would" and laughed through it.
RandomTXDude210 You do realize that in Hollywood there's a such thing as a "fake punch", right?
Luke vanDillen You do realize there's such a thing as reading a comment you're posting on, right? Bale actually punched Ledger, at his request, in this scene. Not a lot of even the best method actors would do that.

Great acting by Bale, just brilliant. Ledger is loud and scary, Bale is subtle, scary and tragic figure as Batman here. Love how he delivers ''where are they?!
