i hope people get that the point of the video is not to stop exercising altogether, but that exercise alone is not enough and maintaining a healthy diet is also necessary.
Maybe if they formulated the video better, the message would get trough. From this video it seemed as if they were saying that exercise is basically pointless.
I want to add something that doesn't get talked about enough, and that's the importance of a healthy gut microbiome. There's some very recent research which suggests that a healthy gut microbiome and how efficiently you lose weight is strongly related. Makes sense why some people can eat everything and not gain a pound! So be sure to look after your gut health. You can do this by taking a high quality weight loss probiotic. (Just make sure it contains only the research-backed ingredients) - Fermented foods are good too such as kimchi, tempeh, kombucha etc.
I’ve finally understood that my eating is the only thing that will help me lose weight, I’ve recently joined the gym and I’m going not to lose weight but to improve my fitness and get stronger. Once that clicks for you, it’s a great feeling 😊
"After exercising, you might eat a double portion of breakfast!" Yes, many people DO make poor health choices because they don't understand the mechanics of weight loss. Thanks for contributing to that, Vox.
Actually the heaviest I''ve been was when I was the most active (going to the gym regularly ,doing gymnastics,running..)I don't really know why but now I barely walk 10min a day if I did so and I became underweight just because I don't eat as much as I remember I did back in the day (unintentionnally ! my busy schedule ) so yeah this video to me is pretty accurate diet is everything !
@@asgreyasnada649 If you're underweight, then it really doesn't matter if you were heavier while doing exercise, because that was your healthy weight. It sounds like you need to remind yourself to eat, which you were more mindful of while active.
I have relatives and friends that visit Africa every year. They always come back super skinny. They tell me that sweating everyday under the hot sun and walking everywhere causes them to lose weight.
I have a cousin who eats like a pig, infront of me, with his skinny body while I'm starving with unsweetened tea in my hand standing next to him... U know it's very easy to be philosophical about something as long as it doesn't happen to you
You can exercise 7 days a week - do tons of cardio. But if you over-eat you're going to gain weight. People don't realise how important diet really is.
But what is "overeating"? Michael Phelps consumed 10,000 calories A DAY when he was training and I would pretty much guarantee no one thinks he's overweight. But if Michael Phelps was some office worker who consumed that many calories a day, he'd be morbidly obese. So what it's all about is how you utilize(or not utilize) the calories you take in.
The real secret comes down to your diet; how many calories are you consuming vs how many you’re burning. I never really payed attention to what I ate before, but I started weighing out portions and counting calories, and it works. It really does work. The key is discipline and consistency. I started off by finding a calorie intake calculator on google and calculated how many calories I should intake to lose ‘x’ amount of weight per week. Then you stick to it. But your mindset is important too, you’re not starving yourself or depriving yourself from enjoying food, sometimes I go 2-3 days in a row over my caloric ‘ceiling’ but the key is to stay consistent, while also making sure to enjoy the foods you eat
It can but not always. Latest research show that these mechanisms (lowering metabolism, hormonal changes for you to feel more hungry and less full, reactions of the fat cells to restock, etc) are similar if you eat less or exercice more (and are stronger for women).
Minimal.....also the average dedicated gymer is lucky to put on 5kg of muscle a year Extra calories burnt per lb of muscle is negligible compared to not eating a snack.
Is it just me or does somebody else feel that both my mental condition and happiness worsen after a good afternoon of working out? A lot of times happens that somebody, among the cool fitness freaks that surround my everyday life, randomly chimes in and says to me, the laziest ass on Earth: "hey! go out and run! It's like a drug! if you start you can't stop cAN'T STOP CAN'T STAAAHP!". But, when I actually go out and run, I don't feel any kind of addiction nor pleasure in doing that. Is this normal?
Me personally, I started losing the most weight after reading the book Woman’s weight loss secrets: the unspoken truth, a few things you are mentioning in this video are also in the book
While exercising alone won't make you lose weight, exercising energizes me, which allows me to make sane decisions about what I eat. Guys don't look at this as an excuse to not exercise because exercise is needed even if you don't lose weight
DragonPupEclipse Nevertheless this can influence a lot of people negatively! Leading a healthy fit life is not rocket science, eat better, exercise and stay consistent!
This video is not against exercise, but it contributes to a culture that is so obsessed with weight that exercise is essentially dismissed in this video without qualification. The reason we care so much about an obese population is because of the comorbidities that are associated with obesity - heart problems, diabetes, depression, fatigue, etc. Exercise is effective in reducing all of those risk factors independently of weight loss, and should be heavily pushed and associated with a long life and better health. Not all obese people are at the same level of health; some are functionally the same or better that their "thin" counterparts. I really disagree with how Vox communicated this because it could cause more harm than good.
Regardless of what they say in this video, please know that exercising helps you to fight off the crave for junk food, after a good work out session, my mind is a lot stronger on staying away from unhealthy diet and my appetite for healthy food increase.
Idk man, the number of people that walk into a burger joint straight out of the gym tells me something else. Almost like...your specific case does not fit everybody else's
Lol no. Does not work that way for most people. Exercising makes me hungry and makes me crave junk food. In fact, after intense exercise I end up eating MORE than I normally would. That's also what the science shows, over 60 articles in fact. So what I do is I stick to low-intensity workouts, because I still get the health benefits without the raging hunger pangs afterwards, and without the junk food cravings. I do walking, yoga, pilates, dancing.
Very true. I do track so I run about at least 5-6 miles a day. I didn't see much weight loss in high school, but when I went to college and had less time to eat, I rapidly lost about 15 lb in about 6 months. Exercise may build muscle, but diet matters for weight.
Don't you think it's common sense. If you loss your weight by exercise and gaining same amount of weight by eating. Then how will it be beneficial in weight loss. You have to cut your diet.
Playstation5< Less calories, water and moving around will lose you weight... trying get less than 1000 calories a day for a month, and you will no doubt lose wieght!
The video isn't saying not to exercise. It's saying that based on whatever studies they cite, those studies found that exercising alone does not necessarily lead to results. It is true that losing weight is as simple as calories in < calories out, and exercising increases calories out; however, human behaviour takes a toll. People tend to justify eating more, or eating worse, because they exercised. In this case, while they're increasing calories out, they're also increasing calories in. They're not saying it's impossible to lose weight by just exercising, only that it's a lot harder and requires a lot more focus and self control than most people have. Changing the way we eat and our approach to food is, in the opinion of the studies this video cites, a more sustainable and effective way to lose weight. At the end of the day, everyone needs to find what works for them.
_"People tend to justify eating more, or eating worse, because they exercised. In this case, while they're increasing calories out, they're also increasing calories in."_ Entirely sensible if you're trying to lose FAT, not WEIGHT, per se. Anabolism is "metabolically expensive." A sedentary, 200lb man and a buff, 200lb weightlifter weigh the same...yet the sedentary guy is carrying 20 or so extra lbs of fat. Worry about what your wasteline is doing, and stick the scale in the attic. Tape measure >> scale.
Anyone who’s ever done a workout on a machine or with a wearable device has realized how few calories are actually burned despite a huge physical effort.
@@dipaverse yeah, I started weight lifting hard awhile back and barely lost any weight and actually gained weight at first. After months I started losing weight and after a year of being a total gym rat I had to add heavy whipping cream to my coffee and stuff myself to keep from losing too much weight. Bodybuilders have to eat calorie dense foods just to keep from losing muscle from weight lifting. This whole video only discusses CARDIO and not weightlifting, which ignores half the data and it's like going to a political debate and ignoring 1 of the candidates completely and then talking about how that candidate completely failed to campaigna
Actually if you are in the obese category with an BMI of 40+ an hour of moderate cardio will result in 500+ calories. Vigorous exercise at a higher BMI can easily get you to 700-800 cal. That's about an entire normal meal plus some dessert. But that's only for those who weigh a lot already.
For me eating is a way to combat boredom and loneliness. I’m realizing just how empty my life is now that I’m eating less. All I needed was a job, friends or a hobby to keep me busy enough so that I don’t eat every moment of the day.
Excercise make me want to eat less, for real. I don't overeat and I feel fuller when I exercise. If I don't exercise, I lay on the couch all day and eat entire pizzas.
to me it's the opposite, exercise makes me wanna eat more than I usually would (by a lot sometimes) cause I feel tired & need energy. interesting to see how different people are!
@@천천히-n6u It should be normal actually when you do exercise and you feel hungry because of the lost of calories. WHat you can do is doing exercise before the time for eating (maybe before breakfast or dinner)
I used to feel the same but after like a year of not exercising I feel the opposite, now I feel like I need some food after doing exercise. I guess its the age?
This isn't discouraging exercise, and it's educating people on how to correctly lose weight. If anything is actually discouraging exercise, is the huge gap between the expected results you would get from advertising and promoting excercise as a health tool and the actual results.
+Denilson 415 The video was just trying to highlight that controlling your diet will have a much greater impact on weight loss. I think that a lot of people will take it to mean they do not have to exercise(which they don't to lose weight) but that is not the video's fault as they explicitly stated that exercise is good for your health.
I believe that exercising on its own is not very helpful in losing weight, but when combined with eating healthy and changing your eating habits it definitely boosts your weight loss journey.
@@jonathanbyer3635 Exercising just makes losing weight more difficult - it actually hurts your chances of losing weight Calories restriction is the easiest, quickest, most efficient method of weight loss
ScarlettShinzon I did, but I can only agree partly. There some points that I think are wrong, for example that people of the african tribe that was mentioned burn the same amount of calories as adults in the US and Europe. I'm pretty sure that they don't burn more, because they eat less. If the body would get more food, they would get bigger muscles and burn more. So the causal chain is vice versa.
Adam richardson damn bro nice! I’ve lost over 14 kilos in just a month. That’s what you lost but in half the time. I’m on a 900-1300 calorie a day diet. I suggest you give it a try!
Azoui That‘s an awful way of losing weight. With a calorie deficite that high you 1) lose not just fat but also muscle mass, 2) slow your metabolism down so much that losing weight and especially gaining muscle will become harder and 3) will probably have a rebound effect some time and overeat because you cannot sustain your diet. You have to do a much more conservative calorie deficite like -20% if you want to lose weight and do a sustainable body recomposition.
Susan Stanko Not directly no. But for someone not really motivated to get moving it might be all your subconscious needs to get away from the suffering and pain that comes associated to exercise. Especially if your out of shape. But hey this is just my opinion and im nobody.
+Susan Stanko What they actually say is very different from how they say it and how people will take it. Regardless of what's said, someone uneducated and unmotivated to exercise will finish this video thinking that exercise is not worth it.
I get that too, but you dont get to that point unless youve been doing that for a while. Like if you stop yr workout for 2 weeks to deload and then come back, you'll crave for some sugar
same. most snacking and unhealthy eating is out of boredom, depression, or stress and regular exercise helps all 3. If I'm busy all day and exercise I barely get hungry at all and because I've already had a ton of mental and physical stimulation I'm not looking for a treat, I'm just looking to get less hungry so I'm more willing to eat something super healthy but that may not be very tasty since most junk food is eaten as a form of stimulation.
Depends what you do, in my experience. I like to cycle long distances and deliberately push myself to the point where I almost can't move anymore, by which point I really don't feel like eating afterwards. If I were to stop earlier though, or do a less intensive form of exercise, my appetite wouldn't change much.
This video is kind of biased. It talks about cardiovascular exercises like Jogging, and Cycling. What they do is burn calories directly. But what they missed out was looking at High Intensity exercises like Sprinting and Lifting weights. Lifting weights builds muscle mass in your body. And this in turn increases the work your body has to put into "utilizing the muscles" and thus, increases your Resting Metabolism which happens to also be the number 1 factor in affecting the calories you burn. Not to discredit the video but they were absolutely right in saying that diet ultimately is the main issue but they shouldn't say that exercising is ineffective.
It's still a lot more work to do weight training (and frequently not easily accessible for overweight people either. Sure there are equipment-less weight excercises, but not as many of them are viable for overweight people) than to eat a cupcake or drink a glass of juice. It's maybe the most effective excercise, but I'd still say it's not enough to beat simply not eating. Excercise is also difficult to sustain. If someone loses _any_ weight due to excercise, it means they would need to sustain that excercise for the remainder of their life in order to maintain their weight (assuming that they don't change their diet).
muscles are more dense as well. They are about 15% more dense. Repairing the muscle tissue (building muscle) burns as much calories as the exercise itself and can be counted as idle caloric burning. but is in fact exercise burning. muscles look good, fat not so much. (this isn't a joke) it means that staying the same in weight but turning it to muscle will make you look thinner (due to my first point) but despite that you *will* look better even if you gain that extra 15% in fat.
They didn’t say exercise was ineffective. They said specifically that exercise without a proper diet and without maintaining your usual physical routine (like taking the stairs instead of the elevator) is ineffective.
Yeah, the info they share is not against exercise, but against only relying on it. They phrase it and pack it click-baitely, though. I am a procrastinator, a depressive being with no conscientiousness and high neuroticism, but recently something clicked while managing that aspect of my life. I don’t exercise, but lost 12 pounds in two months of eating like a human. I’ll lose 27 pounds by November 21 if I stay eating healthy, according to my projections. I eat a lot of protein to stimulate muscle growth and would like to exercise eventually (just a little). Exercising is much more than a tool to lose weight, it makes you healthy, I know, but for my sickly and painful complexion could not be the main recourse to slim down.
Exercise is nothing without good nutrition. Problem is I have no idea about calories and nutrients. I tried next Leveldiet and currently its working perfectly for me. 100% recommend
Sport is just a way to increase your TDEE so it's easier to lose weight without dieting so hard. What's important isnt the calories burned by the exercice, it's the calories burned by your new body once it has adapted to the training. For example some (natural) bodybuilders have a resting metabolic rate of more than 3k calories a day. this way you cant eat satisfying meals and still be in a deficit
Well this video just explained that you should eat less bad things like suggar and people shouldn't consume more calories than the daily suggested maximum if they need to lose weight
Um no. If LOSING WEIGHT is your goal because you're obese or overweight, eating less is something you need to do. Sumo wrestlers in Japan do LOTS of physical exercise and eat very healthy but eat lots. Thus they don't lose weight. Let's listen to the doctors and scientists
@@emontibeller7156 You won't gain them back if you MAINTAIN a lower calorie meal plan than you initially had when you where obese. I said nothing of a specific diet who "only give you a few hundred calories. No dietitian or physical trainer would recommend that knows what they are talking about. All I said is that overweight people are overweight and maintain their weight USUALLY because of their high calorie diet. Counting calories and reducing them to healthy levels will make you lose weight, its just chemistry.
I was told my whole life that exercising is the best way to lose weight, etc. While exercise is important in building muscle, improving mental health, among many other things. Dietary habits is a super overlooked part of it. I started just counting calories about 4 months ago. I went from eating and drinking whatever I wanted to a daily goal of 1500 calories. In that time, I’ve lost more than 20 pounds. It’s important to note that I was overweight so you’re current weight (compared to your target weight) will depend on your body’s ‘natural’ comfortable weight. So it might be faster, or slower for some. While 1500 calories sounds like not a lot, it’s not as hard as people think, all it really takes is for you to WANT to do it. I still eat pretty much whatever I want, but I just control my portions. Obviously some days I go over my goal, but long term consistency is key
im impressed with how many people dont know that you have to actually count calories in calories out when you're trying to lose weight.... not just exercise... i thought this was common knowledge... 😬😬😬
Good for you. But please don’t make the mistake of eating 2 slices of pizza and 1 donut because they are 1500 calories. Those are not real food. Probably we should eat natural unprocessed food and our body will thank us
PS you do have control of your resting metabolic rate . The more muscle mass or even mass you have the higher your rate is . Fat cells actually require energy so does muscle. So if you can control your muscle mass or reduce or increase your fat then your metabolic rate will change
Did you people even look into the amish at all? They eat things that'd kill you, but because of their physical activity they burn it off no problems. Doesn't make much sense to compare us to hunters and gathers whose main goal is to do as little as possible, and only work a fraction of the time, sit a fraction of the time, are not in climate controlled environments, etc, etc. Bad science, bad science.
I literally had no exercise at all. Everyday go to work and walk Just normal work routine. 4.5L water a day (24hours) I eat low carb and high fat. I eat less than 1600 calories a day I have lost 14KG in the pas 3 months From 90KG to 76KG. And i still keep going until reach my ideal weight which is 65KG. Wish me luck!
Agree, I think the calorie RDA's the governments recommend are way too high for ordinary people. 2400 for a man my age, that's a joke, anything over 2k and I start gaining weight. 1600 is the same figure I used during weight loss(I was already at 15% BF, but wanted to go down to 12). Take some discipline to adjust to, but provides adequate calories imo to achieve weight loss while not becoming sickly as with very low calorie restriction.
that is way too much water to be drinking in the span of 24 hours. you should try to cut that down by at least 1L (2L of water a day is recommended for women and 3L for men). seriously if you drink any more than you already do you could get water intoxication
The point of the video is that you shouldn't be surprised if you don't lose weight with exercise if you continue to eat too much (especially fast food), not that exercise is bad or useless despite what the video said, it was just to get your attention. A healthy diet is necessary for success, and I don't mean those fad diets. I mean changing the way you eat for good. If it's something that only lasts a few months the chances are your weight will come back.
Ndeera Mirweniel Actually, I've lost weight without having having to lessen how much I eat. In the beginning I changed the kinds of foods I was eating. Then money got right. So, the only thing I changed was increasing the amount of exercise. I went months eating all kinds of junk food, but I was doing a lot of walking and my weight never went up or down. When I stop exercising and continue to eat a lot, my weight goes up. So, for me I've found that the key is staying active. I like long walks anyway so it's not difficult for me to get out. However, I would like to get back to weight lifting. Maybe for me my eating isn't as bad as others. But as far I am concerned, I get hungry pretty much 6 times a day and can eat a full meal each time. But with exercise, my weight stays where it is. If I want to lose weight, increase the amount of exercise and my weight goes down. I think this issue may differ for some people based on their bodies.
Have you seen the same video I have? It didn't say that exercise is useless, the polar opposite "it's probably the single best way to improve your health". And there's no point at mentioning fast food here, most food at grocery stores nowadays is equally processed and contains the same junk as a McDonalds burger, don't educate yourself on TH-cam comments, please, read.
they never said that exercise is useless. They just said that it is a relatively inefficient way of losing weight as compared to eating healthy. They were emphasising that exercise is one of the best things you can do to live a healthier life, but it's just not as effective in helping you lose weight as is often considered.
They also completely miss out the point that exercises can increase muscle mass which can significantly increase your metabolic rate. Also the amount of energy required to recover muscles after exercise is huge (often referred to as the after burn effect). It’s isn’t true to say that our Basal metabolic rate is completely outside our control. Our control of it is limited by genetics true but we can take steps to increase our metabolism. One of the best ways to do that is exercise. I don’t know why they neglected to mention that.
@@lilnicolette They're lean so of course they wont be burning more calories significantly. Regular gym goers and body builders on the other hand have higher metabolic rate as muscle IS more metabolically active
Latest research show that these mechanisms (lowering metabolism, hormonal changes for you to feel more hungry and less full, reactions of the fat cells to restock, etc) are similar if you eat less or exercice more (and are stronger for women after exercice).
A bit misleading. Diet *and* exercise are the keys to weight loss. They didn't even bother mentioning how strength-training (for muscles) will increase your metabolism.
That was one study and it was throughly debunked. The amount of calories you burn from having more muscle mass is TINY. At maximum found in athletes it totaled an extra 50 calories per day.
I have found physical activity expedited the process exponentially for me. I think it doesn't matter how much you exercise if you dont reduce the calories you eat but for me doing that and getting in a minimum of 10,000 to 12,000 steps a days changed my life.
So they tried to make something that has been very obvious for years now as some sort of recent scientific breakthrough? Yes, exercise plays a smaller role in terms of calorie expenditure compared to nutrition, but the offset is not as insignificant as they make it sound. The problem is the *type* of exercise, such as low-intensity cardio, that is perpetuated to be effective for calorie expenditure when in fact it's not all that great. Anyway, I research a lot and make fitness and health videos. Stuff like this irks me from time to time.
I feel like they were just trying to highlight the importance of nutrition. But for some reason they had to make the video 'diet vs exercise' which really doesn't get the message across. This would be cool if they did a video talking about caloric intake vs expenditure and the effects improper hormone levels from bad nutrition.
Unfortunately you're wrong. first it wasn't "obvious". Even people in the industry (yourself included) don't seem to understand the basic concepts. Secondly the impact of exercise whether aerobic or weights etc is OVER stated no matter how you slice it. Increasing muscle mass has negligible sometimes nonexistent to effect on your resting metabolic rate. Its only real affect is in recovery metabolic rate which is again has negligible long term effects for most people outside of gym rats. Your livelyhood depends on people believing exercise = weight loss I understand the confirmation bias.
This video obscures two crucial points about health and exercise: 1) Your basal metabolic rate is under your control, and anaerobic exercise is how you control it. This video talks about exercise as if aerobic exercise were the only kind that counted. Anaerobic exercise (e.g. weight lifting, rock climbing, etc.) will add muscle, which will raise your resting calorie consumption. 2) Weight is not the primary health risk. Body fat percentage is the primary health risk. Weight is easier and more satisfying to measure. But the fast ways of losing weight all cause muscle loss, which will sabotage your basal metabolic rate. See point 1.
Good points! Weight loss tends to be the obsession in the US at least, when physical conditioning is far more important. I maintain that you can't be truly physically fit and be at the "wrong" weight. But physical fitness is much harder to put an easily measured number on.
_"This video talks about exercise as if aerobic exercise were the only kind that counted."_ Well, look who wrote it. A bunch of over-socialized libtards at Vox. They're reporting for fellow residents of their "bubble." 20 minutes on a Stairmaster is the closest any of 'em will get to strenuous labor...
Sam - what are these fast ways of losing weight which cause muscle loss? from what I've learned, eating less doesn't cause you to lose muscle. The only way to lose muscle is to stop weight training. - I think thats right? let me know dude!
The key to losing weight or maintaining a healthy weight is to have a balanced diet, don't over eat, exercise regularly, stay hydrated and sleep at least 8 hours.
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAIT a minute! I'm a fitness instructor, and all my fancy textbooks/teachers/personal experience show that the more muscle you have, the higher your resting metabolism! And how do you gain more muscle? You workout! So YES, exercise helps you lose weight, just not quite the way we thought. (Seriously, I lost 30lbs through cardio. I promise it works.)
Yes, that was the point of the video, to explain that exercising is not the best way to lose weight, as many people think it is. A lot of people exercise not to build muscle, but to lose fat. That is the misconception that they are trying to address.
+Raymond S. You do loose fat with exercise, it's just replaced with muscle (which has a mass as well). So although you may not be losing weight (even though you would loose weight), you are loosing fat.
I've seen some people try to go the diet only route and get to their ideal weight but lose a ton of muscle. One rather unintelligent and lazy guy i knew lost almost nothing but muscle mass on a starvation diet because he didnt exercise at all since due to the lack of food making him have no energy he just laid around all day and cut out what little exercise he was getting before.
I was 160 pounds and now I am 135 in just 2 months by shrinking the size of my dinner plane. I used that tea plate as my plate. The Rules: Only have 1 plate of food per meal Dont have breakfast No seconds / no stacking food Snacks: Celery Carrots Pickles First 3 days suck but after that you are not hungry and you feel a lot better.
@@epiccookie9889 actually unless you're a child or teenager there is no substantial science showing that this is true. It's just a marketing tool companies use to make you eat their cereal.
exercising always makes me feel exhausted and leaves me starving at the end of it, i stopped that kind of thing and just switched to agoge diet with some movement of course everyday, like walking but not the kind of extreme exercises
what they didn’t take into consideration is that by exercising you build up muscle which are in turn constantly burning calories and your metabolism becomes more active.
Ik I’m late but this is important. This is why most people say build muscle for weight loss instead of doing pure cardio. They said exercise wasn’t important but only looked at cardio instead of strength training.
*A combination of eating healthy and exercising is THE best approach. Exercise not only burns calories, but it relieves stress. And stress is the reason many people over eat. Let exercise be your stress reliever. Not food.* 💗💗💗
This video seems factual enough but I hope people don't discard exercise in general because of it. Exercise can be HUGELY helpful in managing and preventing more common mental health issues- issues that are on the rise just like obesity is.
That's exactly my point. There are going to be people who see this video as an excuse to give up on exercise. I hope folks prioritise even just their mental health enough to stick with it!
Lol, severe mental health problems are not going to be fixed by exercise. If you have a little bit of anxiety or depression it might help a little, but people with severe disorders rarely would see symptoms go down based on a change in your exercise routine. It's not particularly helpful to most people to tout things like exercise as a way to fix mental health problems. It can sometimes manage symptoms, but it's like putting a bandaid on a bulletwound for most people. I have OCD and I do enjoy biking and swimming, but it hasn't changed any of my symptoms.
1. Didn't say exercise alone could fix them- I'm on medication and encourage everyone to try meds/therapy as a first and main option if offered 2. Referred to most common mental health issues which are anxiety and combined depression+anxiety- also stands to reason that mild-moderate forms are more common than severe, and prevention would address developing mild depression before it has become severe, but even so 3. Said 'can be', not 'will be' 4. Have been housebound on and off for years, unable to work for years, only eating one meal a day for months at a time, (which makes me cringe to think now) have had suicidal ideation and planning most of my adult life and have had dissociate seizures. Exercise was and is hugely helpful for me in managing my symptoms and is for many others with severe cases- though, especially with depression, I know that without other help exercise is near or completely impossible.
petalbreeze I'm sorry if I seem skeptical but I have never met anyone who uses exercise as even one of their primary ways to manage severe mental health symptoms. In fact most people, including myself sometimes, don't exercise during breakout symptom periods because if you have OCD or an eating disorder or something it can make you feel much much worse. I just don't like these kinds of comments because they live in the same realm as those articles you read about the woman who did yoga for 6 months and cured her depression. If we all started jogging we are not all going to be fixed
I lost 6 stone in 3 months. I did this by simply starting an exercise program that I kept up. I got with my partner and I stopped exercising. I've gained weight since I stopped. Of course dietary restrictions should also happen but exercise is a really good way to lose weight. A good example is in the English military. You eat as much food as you can. Chips, beans, high calorie foods of all sorts. People in the military don't tend to get overweight because of how much exercise they are getting. I dont agree with this science, from personal experience. Maybe someone can educate me differently about this.
You answered it yourself. This video is saying that high impact exercise doesn't work if you end up losing energy and compensating by cutting off other stuff. A person in military is taking in per your statement high amount of calories and a lot of high impact exercise. Hence they are constantly burning that compensation.
As A Runner I Can Get Away With Eating A Lot Of Food But When I Do That I Never Lose Weight I Only Maintain It sorry for capitalizing all the letters. Also the science is correct because the people in the military are *eating right* they are getting the proper amount of food for the proper amount of exercise. What is different with people who gain weight is that they eat more than their daily expenditure. The people who *lose* weight are the people who eat less than their daily expenditure. The science and this video is trying to emphasize *daily expenditure* that is the whole point of the video.
The big point here is: you shouldn't focus on weight loss at all, you should focus on improving your diet/exercise, change your life and the weight loss comes naturally doing one of those special "diets" or starting to run for an hour every couple days without changing anything else will fail 100%
Well I don't think it's healthy to completely disregard diet. It's a major contributor for obesity, which as a result leads to higher rates of multiple diseases. www.bbc.com/news/health-48088391 Why can't people just learn to eat less/better, move more.
@@nickperozzo you are both right: "a diet" and "your diet" are very different things, and the difference contains the clue: it's about changing eating habits, not about trying a system.
But working out creates more muscle tissue overtime. This muscle tissue burns alot more calories compared to the isolating fat cells, even when you are just doing nothing.
GelidGanef As far as I learned in class he is right and never learned about metabolic compensation, I learned the opposite. And the video states when we lose weight (Not when we gain lean mass, which are two separate things)
This website www.metaboliceffect.com/metabolic-compensation/ goes into greater detail than they did in the video, and it actually has some links to good research. It talks about how difficult it can be, even with lots of exercise and dieting, to actually increase your metabolism. Or even increase your muscle mass. They show lots of studies where participants lost muscle mass on a vigorous diet and exercise program.
It doesn't burn that many calories and it takes a long time to build a significant amount of muscle. It is true that it burns less than fat which fat burns roughly 2 calories a day per lb of fat. But I believe some research shows that muscle might only burn about 5 calories per lb of muscle.

same here.... was like a build up for some big conclusion of what we should do........ and then went to more unnecessary supporting points about how exercising isn't a good way to lose weight. that being said I've learned a lot about nutrition and I'll say eating vegetables and not eating too much is the key this video is a complete fail if you ask me..... makes a big point but doesn't really have a moral to the story
Even though diet is the most important part of losing weight how the hell can you call exercise "useless"? Think about it. If you eat 2000 kcal a day and go cycling for about 1 hour a day at a modest pace you can burn anywhere from 400 to 500 kcal. That's *highly* significant if you really think about it. If you do that every day and keep your diet the same it adds up. It basically reduces your daily caloric intake by 25%. That's still very significant in the long run. There aint' no magical weight loss pill that could ever do this. It's weird how they say that you "only" have control of about 30% of the calories you burn per day. How is that "only"? 30% is a big chuck and very useful to take advantage of as opposed to starving yourself. Not to mention the metabolic boost you get and the fact that you are healthier and therefore your body is going to be more efficient at burning fat.
Because you're assuming that all the other psychological things like compensatory eating, or making choices like not taking the stairs because you exercised in the morning, don't exist. Not to mention that as one loses weight, as the video said, your metabolism can actually slow down. The body fights to maintain weight once it has been gained and has become the new "normal". Perfect calorie counting isn't easy or always accurate, either.
Daniel O that's not a valid argument since you're still in control of what you do the rest of the day so if you choose to be lazy after working out then you only have yourself to blame. You'd really have to be messing up big time if you somehow compensate for the whole 500 kcal every day though. Sure some people might eat more, which is a problem, but small things like "not taking the stairs" are not going to compensate for the whole 500 kcal unless you really go out of your way to try and sleep for the rest of the day. I for one don't even experience this.
I just did 6 days running and had a pain in the upper leg for 2 weeks. Every 2nd day should be fine. You can do everyday, but short ones, I did 40min each day + plus some other cardio.
So basically in India/Asian countries, where caloric intake(especially junk food calories) is lower and people use more public transportation, they have a built in system that keeps most of the population from becoming overweight - it's called walking. Because Americans put so much emphasis on driving everywhere for every daily need, going to the gym is completely undermined by the automobile society. We literally not only eat too much but we sit too much driving down our resting metabolism(the yellow part in the graph). Good urban design can not only save us from a life of diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and pollution, it can lower national healthcare costs by the billions by making walking and biking normal again. Cars are great for long trips and vacation but living in a culture where I must drive everywhere and sit all the time is a disaster for our health. (See also Jeff Speck, Howard Kunstler, and any European city built before automobiles)
The video already made a better comparison with the African tribes they showed. The Africans in this video are constantly moving and their jobs consist of hunting, harvesting, and other intensive labor. Whereas people in Asian countries may walk or bike to their jobs but their jobs are most likely a sedentary job sitting on their asses in the office for hours. You have to give credit where credit is due...Those African Tribal people get it.
What you eat is the most important part of losing weight. If you eat unhealthy and exercise, you probably won't lose as much fat as someone who hardly exercise but eat healthy.
Right! I don't see why that's so hard for people here to grasp. Watching people from The Biggest Loser, and all these other workout-till-you-drop shows, regain their weight basically proved that. The best thing you can do to lose weight is eat clean and strength train to build muscle and tone. Research has been showing that for years. I used to be a cardio-head, which helped with heart health and endurance, but since it was weight loss I was after, I can't help but wish I had some of that time back.
***** it's even worse when people advise to start dieting but then tell them to hardly eat at all. You cannot simply drastically change your diet and expect change fast. Your body needs to adapt to the diet. It would be easier if you go into a diet slowly. Many people experience what is called yo-yoing. Going on a diet too fast and going off too fast and all their weight comes back.
Calories in, calories out. Its as simply as that. This professor ate nothing but junk food and lost 27 pounds in 10 weeks. www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/207071.php

The point of exercise in going down on weight is to build and maintain enough muscle to burn the greater amounts of calories that you eat. It is the muscle not the exercise itself that makes you slim but you need the exercise to keep the muscle so in the end nothing much changes
The truth is those strongmen and linemen really don't have that much muscle since they train for strength and not size. Compare the bodies of Olympic weightlifters with those of bodybuilders. Weightlifters and linemen train for power which keeps their reps low, resulting in lots of strength due to nervous system adaptation, but not much muscle growth since the muscles aren't taxed. Bodybuilders train specifically for muscle growth which keeps their reps in a moderate range, resulting in those muscles recruiting more fibers to the region to deal with the added stress of additional reps.
Last year I purchased a 6 week gym membership that I used 5 days a week for at least an hour per day and had lost approx. 1 Kilo by the end of it. For the last 6 weeks I've been on Keto and have already lost 8 Kilos.
I've heard people say that exercising gives them more energy or gives them a buzz, but for me it's always just non-stop pain and then I feel like I don't even have the energy to move for the rest of the day.
I'm suffering from severe mix of OCD and anxiety, and working out every day for at least two hours (a combination of easy, passive exercise such as medium speed walking, and more intense stuff such as high duration cardiovascular exercise and calisthenics - i switch them around on different days), and working out helps me counteract my medical condition and I can fall asleep easier at night (without any pills, I only drink some sugarfree herbal tea before bed). I eat right, I exercise without nothing held back - and It feels like my condition is slowly but surely reversing, or at least improving in some way!
No, don't eat less food. Eat more foods that are nutritionally dense, satiating, and low to moderate calorie--this is a lot of whole foods, minus fruits. Leave off the processed, concentrated, empty and high calorie foods. After awhile, the body begins to crave the healthier food. You can actually eat more, volume wise, if you're eating the right foods, and you don't have to be hungry all the time.
This story is accurate in it's basic premise about exercise and losing weight. But it's a story at 30,000 feet since it doesn't delve into how different types of exercise or diet can affect BMR. I don't think the journalists know much about diet or exercise.
danL1011 the female correspondents tone sure makes it seem like she does which is really what prompted me to comment? She was even disdainful of the idea that exercise is an important part of weight loss.
I completely agree.Yesfitness happens in the kitchen but 30% for us to work with through exercise is a great deal more important than this video wants to let on. It's like guaranteeing a kid he'll make a 70 on the math test and encouraging him not to bother with doing any of it because he's already passed. C is average, america is becoming so painfully average.
jo klip [She was even disdainful of the idea that exercise is an important part of weight loss.] I think rightly so. Eat less, move more doesn't work as shown in the Biggest Loser study. Exercise is great for fitness and more muscle mass will raise your BMR. But the secret is proper nutrition. I would go so far as to say that someone wanting to lose weight (especially obese people) should probably NOT start on an exercise binge.
danL1011 for one im laughing inside that you cited the biggest loser , who encouraged participants to ride a stationary bike in a sauna and to dehydrate themselves before weigh ins as your scientific evidence. Secondly, you will NEVER get fit if you dont exercise, any fit person will tell you this. An obese person most likely has a dirt slow metabolism and very little muscle mass, unless they were once in some sort of shape. So increasing muscle mass through exercise will increase the BMR, which will burn more calories daily, which you NEED to be healthy, especially if you are obese.
Don't let this video fool you. Nutrition is indeed more important than exercise in terms of weight loss but when it comes to muscle gain there is no replacement for working out just keep that in mind.
That is what this video says. Exercise is the best thing for your health besides quitting smoking. They just make clear that if you want to lose weight you should rather eat a healthy diet instead of an unhealthy diet and exercise.
When I eat well, that’s when I lost calories most. Actually, just getting rid of junk food is what makes me lose weight. Exercise is not that significant but still important. The combination of both is perfect. UPDATE: I'm not saying that eating well will make you lose calories, but eating well and getting a good sleep will always help to a good quality lifestyle (sorry for my English)
Yeah. A light and moderate with a good diet will help it. Also consume foods that make your body work harder than process to get that energy. This process will force the body to incease the energy budget to digest the food while you alter the food with high quality.
Now this is kinda true. When it comes to losing weight, diet is 70% of what matters when trying to lose weight. However, when exercising and dieting is combined, it’s weight loss heaven.
@@mrducke4527 You don't even have to go on a full on diet, you can just modify what you already eat by using alternatives, low calorie versions of food, and instead of ordering that take out pizza, bucket of chicken, or ben and Jerry's ice cream, you can make your own at home. Edit: eating as little as 100 calories less than you did yesterday consistently will make you lose weight.
@@mrducke4527 By "diet" they mean what you eat, not "diet" as in literally going on a diet. And no, diets are unsustainable and don't work long term, and they aren't often the healthiest like you said.
Exercising, as in the act of excess movement, doesn't use a whole lot of calories. Daily brain activity uses more than an hour long workout session. But, as other comments mention, the muscle mass gained from exercising uses a lot more calories on a daily basis than the workouts you do. That's why bodybuilders need to eat so many calories, just to upkeep their muscle mass on top of daily activities.
I used to think that if I had worked out alot but ate the same amount of junk food I was eating I would loose weight. But I was wrong; weightloss is mainly nutrition. It's what you put in your mouth. I think thats what the video is trying to say. That you can't exercise away heavy fattening foods. Or at least it will be very hard to. But exercise is very important. (Obviously!)
Well, everyone's different. I went months with just dieting and limited exercise, and saw little results. I started walking an hour a day on doctor's orders, and I started seeing nearly instant results. At least a pound a week. Then I eventually started walking 2 hours a day, and the pounds started falling off. Right now I'm 60 pounds down in 7 months. (Not including the 10 from before I started exercising)
Come on this video is filled with bad conclusions. If you have more muscle tissue you have a higher basal metabolism, and you get that by... exercising. When you exercise with high intense you can lose up to 20kcal per minute. So if you exercise for an hour 3 days a week and maintain the exact diet, you will lose fat. They say that you will not lose weight because you will be hungrier. If you want to lose weight you will need to correct your diet, so obviously it's not just the exercise. Bottom line, exercises do help you lose weight if you're actually into it and have enough discipline to correct the way you eat.
20k calories a minute? Did you have a stroke there pal? You do realize that the "healthy" caloric intake is less than 5,000 right? According to what you gave, spending anything more than a couple minutes doing the workout and you'll die from lack of energy. Granted, yes you will lose fat, but you will also lose muscle, and just about every cell storing energy in your body, which is every cell. Anyways, they did not say that losing weight will make you hungrier. They said that people who lose weight are more likely to eat something that can reset their progress. Note there the words *more* *likely*, and not will. Also, bottom line, exercises do help you lose weight, *but*, and that is a HUGE but, only works if you intake less calories than you burn through exercise. Basically, saying only eat vegetables, which have amongst the smallest amount of calories in them. Which is far from healthy, and, for the average joe, just about impossible.
Mighty_Devil _1 Yes, studies show that a intense exercise you burn up to 20kcal per minute. Not sure what you tried to say but if you're so confused about it just read some articles and you catch up.
You have a higher basil metabolic rate is higly correlated with weight. If you weigh the same, having muscle rather than fat won't make a huge difference unless you're really getting ripped.
MightyDevil, look up your units. The average intake of calories is way higher than 5000 calories. It is much closer to 5000 Calories. 1 calorie =/= 1 Calorie. 1 Calorie = 1000 calories. 1 Kcal = 1 Calorie.
I realized that when I cut out a lot of sugar I would usually eat more whole vegetarian meals. I ate more food but I did lose a lot of weight. I usually just do cardio because I enjoy running long distances. I think cutting out sugar did make me less anxious which is good too
don't get confused eat healthy 1st and do exercise you can lose more wight be gaining more muscles so, exercise and eat to grow your muscles and spread the message
I lost 25 pounds in 8 months by #1 exercising 3 days out of the week for 30 to 40 min #2 intermittent fasting (16 hrs of not eating) I only eat from noon to 7pm #3 No beer, alcohol, processed sugar, bread, pasta & dairy (ate more salads) #4 replaced one of my meals (at times both) with a protein shake of veggies & fruits #5 drank lots of water, from 64 to 127 ounces (3 to 3.75 litters) #6 the most important part, dedication, hard work and determination!
What you are describing, although admirable, is not really sustainable. Most people will slide back into eating dairy, bread, and pasta again. You should be able to lose weight without going to such drastic measures. That level of determination is hard to maintain over the long term, that is why people put the weight back and them some.
@@thequeertelope7941 Thank you. At the beginning I was counting my calories, but once I figured out that I was 80% of the time under 2,000 calories a day, I focused on exercising and drinking water (the rest just fell into place).
I think it is important to get rid of the mindset of exercising to eat more. You should just exercise in general to keep your body healthy and have it be seen as a bonus for that day.
Very true. The mindset of exercising to eat more not only doesn't work but promotes a toxic exercise culture with the need to "earn the calories" for what you eat. And even if someone did figure out a way to exercise so they could eat more of what they wanted, they would need to keep up the routine for their bodies to keep burning the calories or they would easily start to gain weight.
yeah but a combination of that and exercise is best, not only because it expidites results but makes the process more fun. If you simply just eat less you'll most likely go back to old eating habits, but if you start weight/cardio training you'll enjoy yourself more and stay on it.
I’ve been through months of exercise, watching videos, reading articles, and hearing from people in real life…. I boiled it down to basically starving yourself. The effective way to lose weight. Almost all of the successful, excessive weight loss stories all came down to basically fasting long periods of time.
I've lost 20 pounds in 18 days by limiting my calories to 1200 a day and working out twice a day. I feel pretty good about myself and I feel like working out everyday contributes more than anything
Daily nutritional value says 2,000 is minimum. Bro you should only go like ~300 calories is as far as you should go down into restricting. Take it slow
I’ve just turned 40 and i’m the least active I’ve been, however I’ve cut down to 2 meals a day with an 18 hour fast in between and I’m the slimmest since I was 15 years old. Very little exercise these days but just minimised the input and have had great results, just the feeling of being hungry occasionally at breakfast time. Which is not a big deal really, it just takes discipline. Good luck everyone 😊
steph g What do you mean? Have you even seen the prices of veggies. They're practically giving it for free. No excuse pver price, healthy food is definitely the cheapest
killaxmatt He makes a point. There are veggies and fruits that are more expensive (depending where you live at). For example, I live in the south (currently) and good veggies and fruits (that doesn't have artificial stuff in it nor have corn syrup) are hella expensive. Most ppl don't have money like that, also depending on the individual's ability on where to get their produce, it can be a real struggle. So next time when you think that it's easy to get veggies/fruits, you have to rationalize and think about how others would be affected by it. Not only price wise, but also availability wise.
steph g they really do need to. Economy making junk food easier to get because they want a good majority of society to be obese so it can be easier to control them. It's an butterfly effect tbh.
Yeah "science"... But in reality if you do start exercising, you will automatically start making better choices with food, because you're thinking about losing weight
dancalla77 Well here is the thing, to get your body to being used to new stuff takes about 21 days, and seriously, the first week is almost impossible to stay with that expectation.
Michael Loreantz I know some people who were by no means obese, losing 4-6 pounds after 1 week of exercising 3 or 4 days... And that's "all they did" in their words, however they obviously made better food choices... And by body getting used to something taking 21 days, do you mean that the first 21 days are the best? Because that's the case in my experience, when the body gets used to the changes, weight loss decreases significantly "I stopped losing weight". However these people had lost over a stone in the first 3-4 weeks, just because they started exercising, and because of that mindset of exercise, made healthier food choices... That's my experience with a small sample size
dancalla77 What I meant by the first 21 days is how our body adapt to a new circumstance. If you do something regularly for 21 days, it will become a habit where you will keep on doing it afterwards, without any mistake. Unless you intend to. And with the example that you provided, do they always get 4-6 pounds weight loss every 4 days? I doubt it, chances are they might gain some more weight in the next week or any period of time after that section of time. This is what the video tried to elaborate, as it is very hard to losing weight with a fixed estimation of how much loss per week. That is why the video put the span of 5 pounds a month.
Julian Es El Mejor well first off if he’s over weight he shouldn’t run he should have walked than started to run to prevent any injuries, and also eat better
Prince_7557 well actually over weight people can run I know since I used to be over weight and never walked. Obese people should probably take things slower tho
Yet most people 300-400lb can lose 5lb within a week if they try hard enough. There is no set "how much weight to lose in a month" someone who is 160lb won't lose as much as someone who's 500lb in one month
Have never see a herbal doctor in Africa like DR RORPOPOR HERBAL on TH-cam who cured my weight loss and PCOS totally with his herbal medication, God bless you DR RORPOPOR HERBAL 💟💟
This is so true because if more people would stop feeding that hole in their faces, they would lose weight without all that exercise. I lost 36lbs just by changing my eating habits to more healthy food choices.
But this isn't true because the some people's metabolism can be so low that the amount they would need to eat to Lois the amount you did is not even enough to sustain life. So exercise is a major part in many people's life along with dietary control
Ivan Lopez Some do have a problem w their metabolism but most people over eat, or eat all the wrong food such as JUNK instead of more fruits, and veggies and drinking water . Even if they were to eat right and take walks, more people would lose weight. For those w a slow metabolism they should see their doctor or a nutritionist for help
Ivan Lopez You do realize that isn't true, right? Your body doesn't prioritize fat over basic function. You would die. Not die slowly, but not survive past being a child.
But, if you exercise it can improve your mood and reduce your tendency to comfort eat.

Just exercise, build muscle and stop eating garbage food

Extra calories burnt per lb of muscle is negligible compared to not eating a snack.

Try 95% and 5%.
Regardless of what they say in this video, please know that exercising helps you to fight off the crave for junk food, after a good work out session, my mind is a lot stronger on staying away from unhealthy diet and my appetite for healthy food increase.
Need to be more specific. Resistance training and lean muscle mass increase calorie consumption at rest significantly. Cardio.. not at all.
Idk man, the number of people that walk into a burger joint straight out of the gym tells me something else.
Almost like...your specific case does not fit everybody else's
Definitely agree. Something about exercising just gets me to have healthier cravings, like I'm in touch with what my body really needs.
I do walking, yoga, pilates, dancing.
lucky you?
Very true. I do track so I run about at least 5-6 miles a day. I didn't see much weight loss in high school, but when I went to college and had less time to eat, I rapidly lost about 15 lb in about 6 months. Exercise may build muscle, but diet matters for weight.
Walking
Don't you think it's common sense. If you loss your weight by exercise and gaining same amount of weight by eating. Then how will it be beneficial in weight loss. You have to cut your diet.

THANK YOU

Entirely sensible if you're trying to lose FAT, not WEIGHT, per se. Anabolism is "metabolically expensive." A sedentary, 200lb man and a buff, 200lb weightlifter weigh the same...yet the sedentary guy is carrying 20 or so extra lbs of fat.

Yup weight loss is 80% 20% exercise.

You have to do a much more conservative calorie deficite like -20% if you want to lose weight and do a sustainable body recomposition.

honestly same
same. most snacking and unhealthy eating is out of boredom, depression, or stress and regular exercise helps all 3.
Me too
This video is kind of biased.
Exactly. Exercise and working out building muscle actually increases the coveted resting metabolism they cherish so much in the video.
muscles are more dense as well.

For example some (natural) bodybuilders have a resting metabolic rate of more than 3k calories a day. this way you cant eat satisfying meals and still be in a deficit

eating less, basically fasting is the most effective way to lose weight, is basic science.

4 months later, hows it going so far?
It's still shitty clickbait

they never said that exercise is useless. They just said that it is a relatively inefficient way of losing weight as compared to eating healthy. They were emphasising that exercise is one of the best things you can do to live a healthier life, but it's just not as effective in helping you lose weight as is often considered.
0:11
If you go to the gym, you can also build muscle which improves your metabolism. It's not only about burning calories but also body composition.

Stuff like this irks me from time to time.
heyy its PictureFit. Love your videos

I feel like they were just trying to highlight the importance of nutrition. But for some reason they had to make the video 'diet vs exercise' which really doesn't get the message across. This would be cool if they did a video talking about caloric intake vs expenditure and the effects improper hormone levels from bad nutrition.
exercise builds muscle, which raises resting metabolic rate.... right?
Unfortunately you're wrong. first it wasn't "obvious". Even people in the industry (yourself included) don't seem to understand the basic concepts. Secondly the impact of exercise whether aerobic or weights etc is OVER stated no matter how you slice it. Increasing muscle mass has negligible sometimes nonexistent to effect on your resting metabolic rate. Its only real affect is in recovery metabolic rate which is again has negligible long term effects for most people outside of gym rats.

This video obscures two crucial points about health and exercise:
1) Your basal metabolic rate is under your control, and anaerobic exercise is how you control it.

Yes, that was the point of the video, to explain that exercising is not the best way to lose weight, as many people think it is. A lot of people exercise not to build muscle, but to lose fat. That is the misconception that they are trying to address.
+John Black If you eat "too much" you won't lose weight no matter what you do, not just exercise.

They aren't saying to stay away from exercise.
1. Didn't say exercise alone could fix them- I'm on medication and encourage everyone to try meds/therapy as a first and main option if offered
2. Referred to most common mental health issues which are anxiety and combined depression+anxiety- also stands to reason that mild-moderate forms are more common than severe, and prevention would address developing mild depression before it has become severe, but even so
3. Said 'can be', not 'will be'
If you love the gym routine, you are alright. For the rest of us, eating far less calories than our daily routine requires is the basic science to it.
The big point here is: you shouldn't focus on weight loss at all, you should focus on improving your diet/exercise, change your life and the weight loss comes naturally
doing one of those special "diets" or starting to run for an hour every couple days without changing anything else will fail 100%
Well I don't think it's healthy to completely disregard diet. It's a major contributor for obesity, which as a result leads to higher rates of multiple diseases.

Someone missed the whole part about metabolic compensation... 2:22
But I believe some research shows that muscle might only burn about 5 calories per lb of muscle.
resting metabolic rate is only *MARGINALLY* increased by building some muscle mass

Quit eating all the donuts.
Eat less. Literally just that.
Someone who makes sense! Thank you!
They didn't say that it's useless, just not as effective as we thought it is.
They said "pretty useless", which is still an invalid thing to say.

The point of exercise in going down on weight is to build and maintain enough muscle to burn the greater amounts of calories that you eat. It is the muscle not the exercise itself that makes you slim but you need the exercise to keep the muscle so in the end nothing much changes
you can still be very strong, with a ton of muscle, but still have a lot of fat
Just put yourself in a calorie deficit but make sure you eat enough protein so your body doesn't cannibalize your muscles instead of fat.
Yep. Look at NFL linemen. They're immensely strong, but also have a layer of fat too.
Rockstar Matt
I was thinking those guys in strongmen competitions who lift massive tractor tires and logs

Eat less food, do more exercise. Unless you are a genetic anomaly or suffer from health issues you will 100% lose weight by doing those 2 things.
Even if you are a genetic anomaly and suffer from health issues, a caloric deficit will make you lose weight
I'm heavy on that 👏💫
you guys do know that strength training raises your resting metabolic rate right?
C is average, america is becoming so painfully average.
jo klip
[She was even disdainful of the idea that exercise is an important part of weight loss.]
I think rightly so.

More muscle means higher BMR...
That is what this video says. Exercise is the best thing for your health besides quitting smoking. They just make clear that if you want to lose weight you should rather eat a healthy diet instead of an unhealthy diet and exercise.
Moad Cherkaoui i don't think they contradicted that at all
When I eat well, that’s when I lost calories most.

We can lose weight by eating less food? What a revolutionary concept.

Bottom line, exercises do help you lose weight if you're actually into it and have enough discipline to correct the way you eat.
darksideofthemoon128
Or I can do exercises and spend more calories and lose fat.
The more muscle tissue you have, more calories you spend. period.
Mighty_Devil _1
Yes, studies show that a intense exercise you burn up to 20kcal per minute.

What you are describing, although admirable, is not really sustainable. Most people will slide back into eating dairy, bread, and pasta again. You should be able to lose weight without going to such drastic measures. That level of determination is hard to maintain over the long term, that is why people put the weight back and them some.

I think it is important to get rid of the mindset of exercising to eat more. You should just exercise in general to keep your body healthy and have it be seen as a bonus for that day.
Unless you are a skinny person, in which case exercising to eat more is a big help.
Best way to lose weight is to stop eating.
yeah but a combination of that and exercise is best, not only because it expidites results but makes the process more fun. If you simply just eat less you'll most likely go back to old eating habits, but if you start weight/cardio training you'll enjoy yourself more and stay on it.

killaxmatt He makes a point.
It's an butterfly effect tbh.

bcubed72 but thats only if your diet doesnt change which science suggests it will even if you know it or not
Yeah "science"...
Losing 5 pounds a month ? That sounds pretty good. That's how much you should aim to lose.
In that example, the man is overweight and ran for an hour a day. What is implied is that he’d be healthier if he had a better diet.
Julian Es El Mejor well first off if he’s over weight he shouldn’t run he should have walked than started to run to prevent any injuries, and also eat better
Prince_7557 well actually over weight people can run I know since I used to be over weight and never walked. Obese people should probably take things slower tho
@@mikesosa5439 getting on a bike is probably a better solution for people that are overweight as there is less joint strain
Yet most people 300-400lb can lose 5lb within a week if they try hard enough. There is no set "how much weight to lose in a month" someone who is 160lb won't lose as much as someone who's 500lb in one month
I started running, and came to realize all the findings you mentioned, it is totally true!
Big news... Diet 80%, exercise 20% of success. Combining those two is important and to say that exercising is useless in weight loss is wrong.
How much did you weigh before?
Harvey Bryant went from a size 16 to an 8.
