I used to have two Kelpies from the same litter - called Angus and Malcolm. Unfortunately, they weren't real good at playing guitar but chased sheep pretty well ;)
The Fishman Classics are my favorite pickup I've ever owned. I have the three voice version and I find myself going between the different voices on my guitar for different gain/feel these days instead of using overdrives or different amp models. The Fishmans let you cover an incredible amount of tonal ground with one guitar. The only voice I'm not wild about is the neck humbucker with Voice 1 because it's sometimes too dark or bassy for me. But that's totally not a problem with Voice 2 which is clear as a bell. And it's cool that Voice 3 isn't just a coil tap/split of one of the humbucker voices; it really does sound like single coils!
@@grunge2012 they make a small amount of white noise in voice 3, but no 60hz hum, atleast in my experience. The white noise is very quiet, much quieter than any pickup I've ever heard. It's only barely evident under high gain too
Here's a tip: you can experiment with the high cut, which can also be wired in for push-pull. That makes the pickups sound less "abrasive", for the lack of a better term. It's something I used considerably with these PU, depending on the set-up.
I have a set of Fishman Devin Townsend signature pickups in a PRS SE Cu 24 Floyd and LOVE them. Very versatile and they don’t sound sterile like EMG’s seem, at least to my ears.
I found the DT Fishmans, particularly the bridge in the "metal" voicing, to be extremely similar to the EMG81. Both are great pickups. The passive singlecoil voicing is what really sets the DT pickups apart imo.
When my kids were young we had all the VHS Disney movies, they'd always be on. Certain phrases of those movies stuck in my head permanently. Toy Story, there's a part where one of the toys gets his squeaker back and says 'I think I feel a SONG coming on!'. Happy jamming Leon and to all you readers!
I am so glad you found these, Leon! I have been thinking of trading out my SD Custom and PRails for the Fishman Classics on my PRS since doing so on my 80's shred strat guitar. I was using SD Blackouts and was blown away with how the Fishman's clean up with the volume knob and do not have that terrible compression that actives are known for. I use a Fishman neck single coil and the newer 3 voice Classic bridge humbucker. The single coil tapped tones are the best tapped single tones I have ever played. The neck single coil even has a boost you can wire to the same pot that does the bridge split, so you can pull up one knob and have the neck single coil match the volume level of the tapped bridge pickup. Cheers!
Have this same set in an LTD EC1000 Deluxe ... The pick-ups generate such a clean ,pure note ... So clean and articulate it really made me pay attention to my picking . I noticed my picking attack needed to be more precise because you can hear damn near everything through these pickups! Love your McCarty, have two of my own ....one of PRS's best models...I love the slightly thicker body
Those Fishmans are absolutely INSANE! Wow! The versatility is amazing, and all the tones are spot on. I've been considering this set for my PRS. I need clarity, versatility, response, and I need them to be quiet. I was using an EMG 81/89 set but it just wasn't hacking it and the cleans were terrible.
Active pickups have some great advantages of course in that you're not the ground! I used to use an EMG 85 in the bridge and a 60 in the neck. I'd play lead on the neck a lot and you could get that cool creamy tome like you were getting. Those sounded really good. Clean and with gain. Very clear. You can hear every note. The voicings is a great feature too.. Great playing as always Leon..
Wow man... GREAT GREAT GREAT playing!! I absolutely love your tones and your playing style. I hear a lot of Richie Faulkner of Judas Priest from your playing around the 11:00-11:30 mark. Absolutely love it!!
Wraparound bridge/stoptail has the effect to resonate in a metallic and bright resonance. Strings vibrate against the contact face of the wraparound bridge. Highs are part of any pickup design. Frequencies are all there ... always..
Those on edge break up tones were tasty...just got to the the dirty tones. Damn. those are solid too. they sound realy tight. Are you going to put them in any of you other guitars?
I have the Devon Townsend set in a Suhr Classic Strat, which you'd probably enjoy for the intentionally compressed active humbucker tone and the very open tele-like single coil mode. Active pickups are a fun diversion but I always end up switching back to passives.
YEAH! These been on my to buy list for quite a while now. Your vid kinda gives me another bottoms kick towards pulling the trigga)) Despite their gorgeous cleans and crunch capabilities, I much prefer those to fishman modern sets for their incredible clarity with the high gain applications. Though I am that kind of dude who prefers lo-medium output passive PUs with high gain as well))
great playing. Quick question are both pots( Vol and tone ) push pull. and if yes where did you get the wiring, I cat find it on their web site. I want to change these into my Charvel Socal. Keep up the great work. Thanks
Hey Leon I really respect your opinion. I bought a Marshall vintage modern partially based on your review and I absolutely love it. What would you think of the fluence classics in my warmoth diamondback (sg clone). I'm also considering the Gibson 490 set which I have played and do like. Thanks for your opinion Leon. You are awesome.
Thanks for the demo. I have zero experience with Fishman, so its interesting to see them in action. My favorite humbucker set is the Seymour Duncan '59/JB (TB-4) which I have in my Charvel and I consider this set to be a classic.
Just discovered your channel, I like everything about the demo you did! Your playing, your sound and your way to speak is so cool. Plus you play the same guitar from the same year as I do - it would have really helped me if you did a comparison with the McCarty stock Humbuckers... I recently tried what many claim THE best PAF style pickups, expensive and boutique made in Germany, and decided to but the stock PRS pickups back even though people's reviews on them are fairly mediocre. I liked them, but not more than the PRS pickups which are fine for me. Still, I am thinking about getting the Fluence for my McCarty, Tele style, Strat style and not-bought-yet P90, but it's a big step^^ Your video pulled me a bit closer towards the realization of that idea.
Hey Leon! That creamy, buttery 🧈 smooth tone alone has me wanting to get a set! And I may just buy another Harley custom to put them in. Maybe I’ll go with the color of your PRS you’re using in this vid! But I also love the green n’ Black 24’s as well. Then again maybe I’ll try the single cut this time. It’s all talk until I pull the trigger, & I’ve been a bit antsy with my trigger finger...😉🤣🤘🏼🦾 Cheers
I really want to put these on my s2 mcarty594 but knowing these are active what alterations do i have to do on the guitar? I really dont want to drill or cut through the wood to make space for a battery. what did you do on yours?
It's a little over a year later before I'm seeing this... do you switch voicings mid-song in real live applications? Or is a song sorta built as a voice 1 or 2 song?
Hey Leon nice as always. Question on lead solo you did with f/x. What delay and delay time and your mix and feedback repeats level? What reverb were you using? Was there anything else for effects you have in there. I always dig that sound you have.
Just some delay. It's the Axe-Fx stereo bbd model, with the left channel around 500ms and the right at 75% of that value. Lots of high end removed from the delay and feedback at about 30%
I have a PRS se single cut with two knobs and a 3 way switch. I see that you have the same setup (two knob vs 4 knob). Did you use use both push pull double poll double throw pots to install them. And is there a schematic that comes with that explains that installation! I was told by a dealer I couldn’t install them in my guitar. Obviously you did so any help would be awesome!
It’s obvious from your playing over the backing track you’re definitely feeling those Fishman pups. I love Greg Koch’s Fishman tele tones and hearing these “PAF” style hum buckers has definitely peaked my curiosity. Are they as quiet in the room? I assume your using the Axe Fx III, do they remain quiet playing through an amp without the very good Fractal noise gate? And thanks for the backing track link!

How do you like them .??
Man, you’ve got a great soloing style. Very soulful and tasteful.
I have the Modern Fluence pickups in my Schecter and love them. It is currently my favorite guitar.
Hard to argue with tones like that.
Fractal and Fishman, hard to go wrong really!
I just love how they respond with the volume reduced. I have them in 1 guitar, I may very well put them in my other axes.
