Hope you enjoy the puzzle! I did have my "cauldron" graphics stay on screen a bit longer than needed... but it shouldn't take away too much much from the instruction portion of the video. Be sure to leave a comment! :) :) :)
I prefer this one to the Obelisk variant. Some little additional things you could do: Have the chest positioned where the barrels are and be filled with Ancient Coins. One among the coins is different from the rest. Where most of the coins have a hammer and crown symbols of both sides, the single coin has a Sword and side of a head on it. In this way the chest image represents 1 eye that must be added to the stalks (reduce number of skeletons in image to fit as appropriate). Alternatively inside the chest is a mirror (representing two eyes that need to be added). Again remove skeletons as appropriate. The secret to unlocking the chest comes from either Theives Tools, Use of Dispel Magic, or dragging the magically locked chest to be in front of the beholders main anti-magic eye.
I've ran this puzzle twice now with different group in different system (OD&D and 5e). I really like it, it's great. It's just tough enough so that player have to think about it and try out stuff, but not enough the DM has to intervene. Also the beholder version is great, I love it so I can use random beholder ray when they fail. Thanks for sharing!
Fantastic! Glad that you are getting some great use out of this puzzle David. Awesome to hear. Thank you for subscribing and commenting! Stay tuned for many more ideas, coming soon. CHeers!
I just discovered you channel. What a fantastic idea for a DM series. I always want to include puzzles. Puzzles are on my master encounter charts. I just have trouble coming up with them. No more. This is the best channel ever! :P
Yeah I don't know if this one would hold enough interest for my players. I might be able to rework it. I'll check out the eye of the obelisk puzzle. Really like the Mos Eisley Cantina shirt.
fantastic idea but i think ill have the statue turn into a Beholder when they are done. The beholder becoming real will reveal that the pillar it was attached to is actually a big lever for them to pull that opens the out.
Thank you for the kind words and I absolutely love comments like this. Thank you. Hope you are able to use the Eyes of the Beholder in your game. Enjoy! :)
@@WallyDM honestly they are both equally well done. I have been mulling over in my head how to do it without paintings. So the video has succeeded in prompting me to do some critical thinking which I believe is the whole point to your series. It’s awesome. I will be buying your book.
@@erikmartin4996 Haha, absolutely. I simply provide the ideas and the building blocks and up to you as the DM to bring it all together in a way that works for your game. :-) Also... glad to hear you will be picking up my book... there are 30 more puzzles in the book that are not currently available on my channel. :-) Cheers!
I'm putting together a Vecna-themed dungeon and want it to be eyes and hands all over the place. I will go along and choose the eye of the beholder, because beholders are freaking awesome and I might also make it an actual beholder who was turned to stone by Vecna himself, but with its eyes left functional to make a magic warden for Vecna. While I like the beholder version more for the eyebeams and overall feeling, I prefer the idea of the coloured statues from the obelisk rather than the paintings in this version. I think it is fun to complete the statues and I might lock the missing items behind other puzzles to have a zeldaesk feeling about the whole thing. Great work! I'm gonna order your book soon
Vecna! Awww yeah. That sounds fun. Super cool that you will be able to use the Eyes of the Obelisk/Beholder puzzle in your game. Be sure to stop back by and lemme know how it goes. Thanks Ben! On to the next!
@@WallyDM the campaign is just taking of and I plan to have the dungeon at around 8th level or so, therefore it might take a long time until we actually play it. But once we do, I'll let you know how it went and how many PC's lost there life by petrification, desintegration or death ray 😉
I like the idea of the puzzle and am running a variant of it that may increase the difficulty some. Rather than pictures there is just the phrase "The answer lies in the eyes of the beholder" The number of eye stalks will sync with the number of players and the answer is the colors of their characters eyes as they are the Beholders of the image or statue. Though adding in random pictures around the room would further confuse the answer especially when the numbers didn't match up.
Fantastic! This is a fun one, I hope it goes well for you in your game. Be sure to subscribe to the channel... many more puzzle videos are on their way!
I like the idea of this puzzle. You could also make it "easier" by using the lower CR Undead Beholder if you wanted the characters to actually fight the beholder. I think the banishment idea might confuse the players initially since there is no other means of escape. By doing the puzzle wrong, the players might get the idea they are "escaping", so I would steer clear of the banishing idea.
Ah, yes. Great point on that Banishment idea. Definitely need to steer clear of that. Thanks again for the great comment! Hope you get to use this puzzle in a game soon. :)
I have used what I call a teeter totter hallway trap several times against my players. Long hallway with a fake door at the end. Typically, I set the dex check at -3, -2, or -1 depending how far away from the center of the teeter totter they are when they get on. The problem is that it splits the party and what do you do with the people that fail the check and how do you get them back together. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
There is a DnD 3.5 adventure called The Silver Skeleton that has a somewhat similar puzzle and concept in it. It was pretty interesting and fun, and I could see this supplementing that or vice versa. Anyone with access to the adventure should check it out, as I could see someone making a pretty interesting beholder-themed dungeon with these two resources.

I'm thinking of doing this but including a real cauldron (cheap halloween one will do). Fill it with some gloopy slime and those halloween squishy eye balls and make the players physically pick them up out of the cauldron, slime 'n' all lol. Will add an extra interactive dimension to the puzzle. Can easily paint on some colour to the eye balls so they have to get the right ones.
