You're right. Sad thing is that Dexter had the potwntial to be a masterpiece too. The premise on its own carried the show. But imo it were just season 1,2,4 & 6 that were good, so it unfortunetly turned out to be a hit & miss. The other seasons were just boring or badly written. SFU was from beginning until the very end exceptionally well written, the acting was on point and it never was as shallow as Dexter became. I'm currently rewatching SFU and I almost forgot how good it was. Arguebly on par with The Sopranos, Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul.

Dexter is awesome but Six Feet Under will change your life. SFU is such a beautiful experience and you love the characters so much and the love between David and Keith is so sweet and heart warming.
I recently watched some old Six Feet Under episodes. I saw the one where David, MCH's character, gets kidnapped by a sociopath. All I could think was that if MCH were Dexter he would have laughed at this guy then totally fucked him up on a table.
Watching in again - can’t shake David, Keith, Brenda or Ruth (all actually). SFU is Sopranos quality almost. Dexter is still entertaining after. The way that MCH portrayed an evolving homosexual man and the mannerisms. He nailed it. Just watched an interview with Alan Ball and he couldn’t decide if he should give Nate‘s part to David until Michael c hall in and he knew he found his David.
It's so awesome seeing him play these two roles. The kind, sweet, ready-to-please David VS the dark and twisted Dexter. Two character who are complete opposites and he plays them both so well!!!
Every episode of SFU was great. I didn't get bored once. Dexter overall was great but i skipped a few episodes toward the end. Michael was and is an amazing actor
Dexter was more entertaining that SFU. Judging by writing quality though, I'd have to say SFU was incomparably better. What it lacks in theatrics it more than makes up for in character development and creativity.
Just started six feet under last week. Starting season 3 tonight. Love MCH! :) It's so weird to see him in such an opposite character to Dexter though. David is so uptight! He is great in this though I wish we could see him on broadway right now. The Realistic Joneses sounds great. He is very talented. Glad he became so successful. Well deserving of it!
I loove Michael's voice, it's funny when he'll be thinking something in his deep dark voice, then he'll say something really high pitched or he'll laugh, it's so wierd but funny. It goes up about 3 octaves. Am going to go nuts waiting for series 6!!! 0.0
David Fisher is hands down the better character. Dexter is the more compelling one. People will go for the flash in Dexter rather than the substance and significance of David Fisher. Bottom line I love both shows, but Six Feet Under and David Fisher take the cake.
I enjoyed Dexter but after I finishing SFU I said "this is the best TV show I have ever seen" and I had never said that about any TV show before or after I watched SFU.
A show like Dexter proves that great writing, fleshed out characters, and meaningful, unforgettable plot, makes for great television, which is what's sorely missing from NBC/ABC/CBS/Fox. Sure there are pretty good shows on network TV, but more and more great shows are getting their start on cable channels, and too often networks are offering up too many "reality shows" that are more about fluff than good, quality television.
MCH is a brilliant actor. I had just watched SFU for the first time before watching Dexter, and it took one episode for me to stop seeing him as David and start seeing him only as Dexter.
I watched Dexter before SFU and can say STU is infinitely better, and I still hold Dexter in high regard minus the endings. It's not even comparable, it's like comparing a Cathedral to a really nice conservatory.
I remember starting watching Dexter’s first episode multiple times around 2007, but got bored and couldn’t finish the first episode several time. Because it was such a famous series back then I forced myself to watch it and fell so much in love with Dexter I have even a tattoo of the show. I remember starting SFU multiple times too just because Michael C. Hall was in it. The only thing I can say is, there will never be a show that is better then SFU! Both are great shows but god SFU was perfect from the pilot episode until the ending! I wish someone could erase my memories of the show so I could watch it again and again! ❤
@theenigmajjames I gotta say that I love Breaking Bad and the Walking Dead, but I started watching those first. However, once I started watching Dexter..... forget about it. Dexter is by far THE BEST television show I have ever watched. I give credit to the other shows including SFU, but they just dont measure up
@arithestrangest Not just because David is Gay. David by nature is pretty much a pushover who tries to please everyone as best he can. He's just naturally sweet.
@theclawof1989 thank you ....finally a comment I fully agree with ...whats wrong with these people that say that shows like Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead are better than Dexter? They must not have really watched the show if they say that.
@1919juggalo sorry but those shows could hold Dexters jock ....Michael C Hall is the best actor on Television with the best show on television ...sorry to burst your bubble
@thyamelate I use to be all about The Sopranos.once I started watching Dexter, everything else seemed second best. I have never seen better plots or better writing. I agree. It is the absolute best show on television. I have this site I use, and I downloaded every episode of Dexter for free. I first watched it after the 4th season ended. I watched all four seasons in like a week. Then of course the fifth. The sixth is shaping up to be the best yet. Have you kept up with the news on S6?
@krisp8888 sorry, you have to be a littel more specific than "that scene where he kills that guy". However, when you get to understand who Dexter really is, it all ties in really well. If you're still uncertain if you should give Dexter a chance, try reading the books first. It's Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. The books are great, but I feel like the show takes it to a whole new level, both in character development and substance. I sure hope you give the show a chance
Ok I am a heterosexual man. I love women, I make love to women. But I am going to say this and I don't care what anyone's judgement of me is....I have such a huge man crush on Dexter, my friends and family are beginning to be concerned haha. I just identify with his point of view on the world & people so much that I feel we are connected in some unexplained way. There are words I hear Dexter speak that were my very own thoughts at one point or another. I love him, there I said it.
I don't recall expressing any true, genuine emotions. When I said I had "a man crush" on him and that I "loved" him I was joking. The part of my comment that I was serious about however was when I said that I identified with his point of view on the world and the sheep that live in it. You shouldn't take yourself so seriously, you might hurt yourself.
It was still a pretty bad joke. Besides being incredibly low hanging fruit, the awkward implication that Michael might actually kill people in real life as a hobby is almost insulting.... I cringed.
@thyamelate I will give it a chance...at least the first three episodes of Season One..... Sorry I was not more specific. I was referring to the first death of the series, in the pilot. I found it very disturbing....but have heard it said that the first killing was abnormally "Creepy" for the show......
@thyamelate I have been considering checking Dexter out since Season Four. Was a huge SFU fan, but that scene in Dexter, where he kills that guy, was so disturbing....really turned me off. Is it worth checking? Is there more to it than meets the eye? How many scenes like that are there?
@LivesoninHeadPhones Dexter is meant to be more realistic. And think about the themes that can come from a murderer who tracks down other murderers in a city that appears so bright and lively. It has a lot to do with façades and stereotypes.
@krisp8888 LOL np. Yes it was a little more creepy than most, but it was taken straight from the book. I won't lie though Dexter has some disturbing scenes, but when you think about it so did Six Feet Under :}
The Dark Defender is Gotham's Go Getter lol The light and warmth of Miami does not quite seem to fit to me. . .the only negative is the city for me. Dark City (the movie) fits the lighting. . Bat man fits the lighting. . .why not Dexter. New York is boat ready or ever Baltimore , both of wihch are dark, dark crime cites (lots of murderers to have fun w) and both are near the gulf stream of the dark dreams in all of our heads lol
