Great video. I do quite a bit of big bluegill fishing in Sandhills Lakes in the Nebraska panhandle. Lots of 9 1/2” to 11’” Bluegills. You are right when you say that bluegills are underrated.
Those were some real tanker Gills. Had the greats colors that you get out of clear water. Way ta go!

Love the loon calling in the background at around 15 minutes...so Minnesota. Was just up in Ottertail county in early July, couldnt keep the gills off the hook.

I gave up on chasing just about all fish except for panfish and trout. I live in Wisconsin right by the Mississippi and I do catch some giant gills, crappies and perch. Looks like you got em figured out also.. Great video man..

I've used cut up leeches for bluegill fishing before. Did quite well that day too.

10-1/2" isn't a freak of nature. When i was a kid...it just that there is 3x as many people fishing for them. The closer you are to the cities the smaller the fish you catch. I was fishing on a little Lake, right in st. Paul. Right on the Mississippi river it's called Pickerel Lake. Maybe 7 minutes from the place i was living. Right in town. So I've got a little ultra light stick & 4 lb test and a beetle spin will a little chartreuse metal flake sassy shad and plucking 10 to 13 in largemouth bass in the occasional 24 in Northern I'm having a ball. I move on around the corner and this guy comes and sits down where I was fishing at and I'm watching this guy while I'm casting and making my releases he's catching the fish that I had just caught and putting them in his bucket to take home and honestly I was walking back heading for my car and I saw this guy throw a four inch bluegill into his bucket literally keeping everything that he was catching. Its kinda sad... bluegills should be 10 inches those little 4in fish God made to put under a corn stalk.
10 1/2 isnt a freak but its huge anywhere you go. Anything over 10" is huge. 11" or bigger is an monster. Ive caught plenty of them and release them all. Its crazy how small of fish people keep
@@330Maniac. I know what you're saying my biggest bluegill I caught when I was 10 years old at church camp on a fly little black gnat with a red tail. Cross my heart and hope to die that fish was 12 in Long but that's the biggest bluegill I've ever caught. I've looked and looked and looked for the 10in.. I caught some nines and nines and a half up north in Minnesota but, we mostly fish for walleyes and crappies ive heard stories about paper plate size but i aint gonna lie. Caught some nice sunnies up by Grand Rapids through the ice...maybe one day I'll get lucky and take some pictures...i could eat some 7-8" but i to been listening to Al Linder since the 80s telling us about selective harvest...and preserving the big spawners...rambling on again sorry

Went up to Rush a few years back and crushed them. My brother and his family have been going up for years to MN stuffing coolers. Get some Walleye in the boat then we stuff the cooler with gills.

Love the video. I disagree with someone's comment about city fishing. I have lived in suburbia for about 30 years and in the country the last 25. First a far greater percentage of people in the country fish. Next, people in the country use fishing and hunting as a grocery supplement. Many of them keeping everything they catch. As for the city most of the bigger lakes in the city always had too much boat traffic for people to bother fishing. Sure you would have bass tournaments, but little recreational fishing. This drove the masses to the smaller lakes, fishing them out. The 2 largest bluegills I have caught both 11 3/4 in. Were caught lindy rigging a crawler on bottom in 20 fow on a suburbian lake surrounded with houses and a public boat launch. Also don't expect to catch bluegills like that in the same locations you are catching 3-8 inch bluegills. If you sit on gills like that you will never find gills like these. These gills are few and far between and can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Scouting with good electronics is usually a must. Underwater cameras can also be helpful. Just my opinion.
I know quite a few buddies that live and grew up fishing around large cities. Those lakes get hot so hard that there's nothing left to catch. Regardless of the weather those lakes are full each weekend. There's a lot less people in the country to fish. Many people don't even fish or just keep what they want to eat. It's not like 100 years ago where you had to eat fish to survive. That's why there are so many great fishing lakes around me. Most people practice catch and release like me. We also have lowered limits to protect the big bluegills.
Hats off to a real sportsman throwing them hogs back in your a great sportsman and inspiration to our young people

Watched Larry Smith Outdoor's latest video yesterday fishing on Mille Lac's and Kent Anderson from Warrior Boat's like's using a mono leader when fishing leeches because it allow's the leech to swim more freely versus a fluorocarbon leader because it sinks.
I prefer using mono leaders when fishing crawlers or leeches. Floro with a minnow but only on a lindy rig because mono floats. On a slip bobber floro is definitely preferred because its so translucent and doesn't matter if its floats
@@330Maniac Guess it would depend on water clarity one's fishing also and how finicky the bite is, plus if your using "Power Leeches" also. Lol.

aside from the obvious of hooksett timing, I was wondering if you have any tips or videos explaining how to pan fishwithout getting the hook swallowed all the time. Every time I take my boys out panfishing I'm constantly cutting the line to try to save the fish.
Ive found out using a slighty larger hook helps quite a bit.
@@330Maniac I've tried those super long panfish hooks and they still devour them. It doesn't look like you use that kind.

I use a jig head when fishing this way, they never seem to swallow it. 1/32 or 1/16th oz.

No I like to keep some too but these are much to big to keep. These fish are probably 10 years old or more. I usually keep the smaller ones

I was a foot or two off bottom. Even when i got to deeper water they were coming up 3 or 4 feet hitting it.

take a little advice from a person who love big bluegill. Start going out there to that same leg but use a cane pole I think you will have better results. Because you on that real just not doing it lol 😜😂🤣👀

Honestly Bill people spend just as much if not more on trophy panfish trips compared to walleye or any other fish now days. They are by far my most popular TH-cam videos. I'd rather catch an 11" bluegill than a 30" walleye. It's all preference my friend.

We don't have a lack of opportunity by any means in Oregon, but they are different opportunities, mostly. What in the world are you doing. Catching bluegill like that. How lucky can you be to live where the lakes aren't fished out. You let lots of the fish go. I my area every body keeps what they catch. But there's hardly nothing left to catch. I have to drive at least an hour or more to find fish. But nothing like the size your catching. Consider your self lucky but don't take it for granted. A bluegill grows about 1 inch per year so a 10 inch gill is about 10 year old or older. Letting fish go assures there will be fish to catch in the future. Fish keep better in the lake then they do in the freezer. Then they can reproduce. They can't reproduce in the freezer. I remember my grandfather catching 10 inch gills. About 50 years ago. I wish some of the millionaires, billionaires would put there money to good use and put it toward planting fish. Every body likes to catch fish. We literally have lakes that used to have good fish populations, but now they are fished out. People build cottages, houses on the lakes and fish the lakes till there hardly nothing left. When I watch your videos on fishing and trapping. It takes me back about 40 years. Consider yourself lucky to even be able to have gills and crappie to catch like you do. I envy you. You can be sure that most of your prescribers do also. Don't brake that expensive new pole on those big bluegills.
Hopefully gonna put some of those big gills in the boat this weekend!!

@@billwalker4836 There are tons of giant bluegills left in Minnesota. Nobody wants to share where they are though like me as there's to many people that just want to keep them all instead of protecting the resource. Definitely gotta get away from the cities though more north.
@@330Maniac its hard to add inflection of sarcasm...i lived in St Paul for 15 years and for the first 3 years the only Wally i knew of in Minnesota were at the Tavern on Grand. I found em in some of the up nort lakes. But so many tight lipped fisherman i never saw in my life. Maybe because there were cityits. I didnt find Minnesota Nice till i got away from the cities. Yes i caught nice fish up nort...but its that old addage life is so short and there are so many lakes. Like to fish the western part of the state if i get back up to Mn. Just to check it out. Btw i grew up in SW Michigan, right on The Lake. I dont know fersure if they were just sent to Chicago but when i was a kid back in the 60s there were pole shacks on the river up by the Berrien Springs Dam so anyway in the 40s and 50s they netted the suckers out to the point of like we dont get a sucker run anymore. I know for certain they are great pickled and i was told that smoked they are good too. Just sayin cause You caught that one. Never eaten one fried or baked... to me they're like any other fish that has a mouth that goes down. Im kinda a snob. I don't eat fish with the mouth that goes down. Now I know some people do saying there are people that eat carp and Sheepshead and suckers. I was an Aircraft Gypsy for 20 years followed aircraft factories around. Lived in Columbus for 5 years built part ogf the B1 Bomber at Rockwell of columbus fishing Lake Erie walleye was fashionable. Lake Eriehad loads of sheephead as well as an incredible walley population. We were throwing a lot of sheepshead back some days we can catch as many Sheepshead as we did walleye and we were there was a 10 fish limit on walleyes back in in the 80s when I lived in Ohio. So anyway. one of my buddies played a trick on one of his buddies one guy Ron was from Tulsa and the other guy HB was from Fort Worth. One trip HB kept a couple of them Sheepshead and fried them up calls Ron... come on over and got some of them fish fried up they lived in the same apartment complex. Ron goes over and he's gobbling down on these fish. Rons telling HB how good them walleyes were. HB said Walleye...them aint walleyes thems sheep heads you guys was throwing back... I have no idea what he was seasoning them with I'm sure that after eating walleyes for 15 years if you put some sheep head on the plate in front of me I could tell they weren't walleye fillets but I don't know when they were battered up and they got seasoning on them and salt and pepper in Shore Lunch. JS ...i make my own batter but i hope i could tell the difference...i dont know.
@@billwalker4836 I was born and reside in Detroit Lakes. Ive been very fortunate to grow up here with hundreds of lakes within 20 minutes of my house. Also no giant cities so most people are very nice.
