      It is hard to get started, and it usually takes about a year to see some real traction. But it is most certainly doable. There’s nothing special about successful shops other than consistency and quality products. So if you really do see this as something you could do long term, then don’t let some setbacks discourage you 🙂

    I make maps the same way, using snazzymaps. I also add missing details myself with regular sattalite photos to get the shapes right. I use a laser and do them in custom coasters and larger layered wall hangings, I've got a few different styles that I've came up with which are pretty standard so far but I've got some neat ideas in the future that I've never seen. Won't have a store for another couple of Months, but soon! I love lazing! I've got a whole lot of other things in the works too- wooden playing cards in a few different styles is one thing I've put a a couple hours into over the past Month.

    I think you've misunderstood the copyright element. The Creative Commons license is for the styling of the map itself (the colours etc.). This is overlaid onto a Google Maps image which is not available under Creative Commons and must be licensed for commercial use. The video is misleading as selling these images based off the Google owned copyright is technically illegal. If you licensed the Google Map for use, the use of the styling from SnazzyMaps would not be restricted.

    • @SantiHustle
      @SantiHustle  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there, I believe the methods showed in the video fall under the fair use doctrine here in the US, given that n1: the nature of the copyrighted work is factual, n2: the amount or portion of the work used is small or insignificant, n3: the effect on the potential market for the copyright owner is non existent, and n4: the end result is highly transformative with respect to the source.
      I hope this helps shed some light on the matter. However it is always wise to consult a copyright expert to clear any doubts.

    Back when I had a design agency, a couple came to us with a business idea like that one, we made them a beautiful website, bunch of social media posts to get them started. Branding, stationary. Their maps were basically like these ones, in a whole bunch of different options, frames etc. One year later they shut down the whole operation. I'm not saying it's a bad product and there is no possibility that it was their fault as business owners (OR SHITTY branding for that matter - which it was not!).. just saying .. they supposedly did everything right and made no money off of it. That was like 10 years ago.... so don't believe everything a youtube tells you.

      Hey there! There are many successful businesses that started less than a year ago and are already profitable. In fact, the examples I showed in the video are less than two years old. It seems to me that in the example you are describing, they made a huge investment upfront before the business was even profitable. It's probably better to just get started, and then focus on scaling once the business is already growing. I do appreciate your feedback though. 🙂

    My argument is why are we doing the same thing that others are doing? this is one of the fundamental issues with Etsy, just repeated ideas and designs until you get a saturated market. I appreciate the instructions and being shown how to do it.

  • @lesrebem2177
    @lesrebem2177 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    Yes, except that there are already thousands of people selling this type of product on Etsy. Would you buy this product from someone who has 10,000 sales and 5/5 or from someone who has 0 sales? the answer is quickly chosen.

    • @SantiHustle
      @SantiHustle  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s actually an interesting topic for debate because many successful stores became successful in an overly saturated market. Competitive markets simply prove there’s high demand for such products, which could be an advantage when starting from scratch.

    Right, so the maps are created using Google Maps data, which is under copyright, and the Terms specifically states that creating new products with the maps is not allowed, so this whole method would actually break the law, doesn't it?

      Hey! Welcome to the channel! Absolutely, over the course of the next couple of videos i will go over how to set up a shop from the ground up.
      It is ideal to have a clear and well defined niche when selling on almost any platform. You want to be the "go to" place to get a specific kind of product. But you can definitely diversify within the niche and sell maps as printable posters, or maps on shirts, shower curtains, mouse pads... you name it.
      In the video I showed an example of a shop that sells printable maps but also printable constellations. So there is some room there to diversify to other somewhat related topics. I wouldn't recommend selling maps and animal stickers on the same shop though!

    Unfortunately only 'the styles are free to use' (aka the settings of colours, contrast etc). Not the maps, those are protected by copyright and I don't think I want a copyright lawsuit from google. I know copyright can be complicated sometimes but here it is not, and this is dangerous advice for your viewers.

      Hi, the license terms are at the bottom of the landing page. The maps are distributed under a Creative Commons license. You can freely use the maps even for commercial purposes. It would be illogical to freely distribute the “styles” but not the underlying map. These are not styles that you can apply to anything else other than these maps. I hope this clears it. 🙂

    • @SayuriYaki
      @SayuriYaki 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@SantiHustle I know it seems illogical, but it says "All styles are licensed under creative commons and are completely free to use." at the bottom of the landing page, and that's what they mean. They can't give anyone permission to use the underlying maps under CC0 because google owns it.
      Google only allows websites to embed their data and that is what snazzymaps is doing. Snazzymaps service is to provide styles so that if someone legally, how google intends to, embeds google maps data into their website, they can do so with a cool colourful style. And those styles are under CC0. I mean, I wonder if someone could even legally copyright the specific style of a map (but some companies even try to hold copyright to a single colour or sth so it definitely could be a thing), but it's still a good idea to inform both users of the platform that create styles, and users who use those styles on their website, that those styles can be used under CC0.

      @@SantiHustleNo… you really need to read what it actually says, not what you think it says; ”all *styles* are licensed under creative commons and are free to use”. It says nothing about the map data … because that is something they can’t give to you. They use Google Maps that explicitly prohibits the kind of use suggested. However … you can use e.g. OpenStreetMap data, which is just as styliseable - it just … takes a bit more effort.

      @@SayuriYaki You are correct. . Santi Hustle is not in this case. Even if that website said the maps can be used commercially (they only say styles for a reason) you would need the permission of the map owner that in this case is Google.

      @andyscott5978 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      I think the OP is right. I’ve read the terms of use and it does specifically say the styles are free to use. It then goes on to explain how they can be used in a JSON file or other ways on your website. This really does seem to point to the fact that the styles are for use and not the maps themselves. It is strange though, but if the big G has the copyright of the underlying map then that’s the way it is.
      If the image is changed significantly for artistic purposes then is there still a copyright issue? Like taking a photo of a statue. You could sell that and not get hit with copyright lawsuits; couldn’t you? If you know then please pass on that knowledge.

    Great video. I have a quick question- you mentioned about converting the uploaded PNG image to a smart object in PS. Would that suffice especially if we are printing complex maps in larger sizes or is it recommended to vectorize the image? For example, I want to print in 12x16" or 16x20" poster size. Would converting the PNG to a smart object be enough or do I need to do anything to maintain the image quality ?

    • @SantiHustle
      @SantiHustle  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@MayurWCAM3 that’s a great question. The very best alternative is to have a vectorized map. That way you’ll never get a pixelated result. Converting a flat image to a smart object simply allows you some flexibility when enlarging it or shrinking it, but the end result will never be as high quality as a vector map.
      Right this moment I’m editing a new video precisely on how to create awesome high quality vectorized maps. I’ll be uploading it this Thursday so stay tuned! Hopefully it will help you achieve the best results possible. I’ll send you a notification when it’s up 🤓

      Hi there! Exactly, Snazzy only lets you download a PNG which means you do loose some quality when enlarging the image.
