  • It may be hard to believe, but I had more charging issues. This time I actually used the right method for verifying the generator.. eventually. Don't judge.
I also found a nice easy win for another problem.
    Enjoy.

Another great video! Won't be making it to Eureka Springs this year. Decided to put the money aside I will spend for the trip and apply it to a set of safari windows for the bus. Have fun. I'll be thinking of you down there in the heat!

I would have looked forward to seeing you at the show, but I totally get the logic. Any place I can go to see your project?

Crusty wire mate! I love your early Notchback!! I always wanted one(and still do!)

Same here, man. In that way, I am actually, NOT literally, living the dream.

I just noticed the Timmy, love it! I put in the same regulator in mine some time ago and it hasn't given me problems....yet. unless of course, as you stated, if an EMP gets dropped haha.

Glad you like him. He’s my copilot. I think you’ll find most of my decisions run through the impending apocalypse filter 😕

Bosch ain't what it used to be! I've had pretty good luck with the solid state voltage regulators but that could change. The big red wires on the from end of the regulator look awful close to the sheet metal in the car. Might just be the camera angle but some fully insulated terminals might be a good upgrade. It was good to meet you and chat at Eureka Springs. Glad you had a successful trip!

I’m sure you’re right about Bosch. Likely very little is really as good as it once was. Spot on about the proximity of the wire to the body too. I’ve thought about that before, but haven’t done anything yet. Those terminals are quite secure and wires are pretty stiff, but eventually I would like to replace all the wiring too, so.. Same on the Eureka Springs show. I had such a great time. It was weird for me how I was happy to have much of the joy come from interacting with the people as much, or even more than seeing the cars!

Every little bit helps. At least it was an easy sitting down job, not like some we're faced with.
Think you might put an alternator in one day?

Really glad you asked that. As I believe it, the only reason to go to a alternator is if the load on the system demands it. If I wind up putting a killer system one day, I’ll have to factor in the cost. Also, overall, generators last longer than alternators. I’d prefer not to have to replace the VR too often, but next I think I’d try the OG points based system.

Yep, I suppose if something is doing the job okay might as well leave it. I put an alternator on mine only because the generator packed up. It should last a fair while as I don't use my buggy as often as I should unfortunately.

@@mrpaisleyshirt well, I’m sorry to hear that. Any day driving a classic VW is a good one!

On type 3 you might need that smallerator. The generator has a special fit in there. Generator’s work pretty good. I always had a 1 wire alternator in my bugs and sand rail.

@@brilog69 another good point. There is a very particular fit the generator has and a reason for the rubber seal between it and the shroud. You try to keep all the air in the plenum. Cram an alternator in the hole and you have no where near the air pressure in there.
