I love Magic School Bus! And yeah, one thing that I would recommend to writers is that switching up on your genres is not a bad thing if you can pull it off. Some people are too stuck in a rut. For example, in Beneath the Dragoneye Moons, they have transitioned from Slice of Life to adventure and then back again, and personally, I think they should have transitioned from Slice to Life to a new genre to keep them readers invested. Sometimes, it is necessary in order to make something pay off. For example, with my story, I have been trying (and failing) to transition from the current genre of horror-tragedy to a school slice of life. It will still have the far more important psychological aspects connecting both arcs, but my hope is to create an upward ascent.
Slice of life is one of my favourite genres. I plan to meld a little of it into my high fantasy story, just to make things feel more grounded. I want to aproach the mundane with the same adoration usually held for the sublime and make all the world feel grand, at least a little.
This is something I intend to expand on soon. This episode and the hard magic one actually planted the seeds for it, but there's still some stuff I'm working out.
Far too many to list here, but especially restoring civilization / systems to an 'untamed land' - however that's defined in the story. That things can be 'normal' is a triumph in those scenarios. Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. All of Stardew Valley. Ascendance of a Bookworm. Classic girl lit The Secret Garden and A Little Princess.
Oh, that works perfect for what I intend to talk about soon with social fantasy. I just need to complete my thinking on how to perfect a guide. Hence my current obsession with Frieren.
How does this not have more views??? This is an excellent video, thank you for explaining Slice of Life! These appear to be good examples of both sides of the genre (extraordinary characters in ordinary situations, and ordinary characters in extraordinary situations). Keep up the good work!
It's the story of this channel's life... so far, at least! 😆 I'm working on correcting that this year. Regardless, thanks for saying as much! Little things like this help me feel that this all is meaningful work, even if it isn't taking off yet.
@@story_marc You’re welcome! It is indeed excellent work - I’m particularly impressed with the art style of the talking character. I presume it’s your avatar? Marketing isn’t easy, it’s a completely different field from making content, but it’s well worth the effort! 😁👍
Yep, an avatar based on my IRL look. The artist is a friend who did an incredible job at it. It is one of the few things I've had since the start I feel was incredibly well done and I do not wish to replace! And agreed on marketing! It's another challenge to add, but eh, I've always been about leveling up what I can 1% at a time each day.
I just have to say that I read and watched Spy x Family (and got my mom to watch it as well) because of your videos. You speak with such a passion about it on your first videos that I felt a big urge to read it. Thank you very much for that just as much as for the amazing content you make!
YES! So glad another person has tried it out and enjoyed it! 😃 While I don't think it's a revolutionary masterpiece or anything, I just absolutely LOVE what it's doing throughout the story so far and just enjoy coming back to it whenever it releases.
@story_marc I really like how it really isn't a revolutionary idea but feels fresh and fun. It becomes a good example that if it's well done, it does not need to be groundbreaking to be entertaining, and it still shines light for deeper discussions.
I want to write a slice of life, actually i have most of the story planned i literally just have to start. But I'm worried about not reaching readers, originally it was going to be a webtoon, but i had to change it to a light novel, sadly in my country light novels are not so popular (japanese and korean light novels are, but if they're written by someone born here, people don't care as much, same for webtoons) I'm a bit scared that it'll be difficult to keep people interested (I'll still write it though).
Definitely don't give up! And do know that feeling there with readers and all. If you don't mind me asking, who do you have in mind in specific for readers? I might be able to come up with a little something to consider with it.
@story_marc Honestly, perhaps I've spent so much time worrying if people will enjoy it, i didn't stop to think what people would enjoy it. I'd say, mostly those who like seeing the bonds between characters and how they're formed, family, friends, and even those connections who were broken and left a whole in your life. My story has a simple concept, so I want to focus a lot on the characters, how they change, and connect with people.
That's the heart of the slice of life genre! And I think that's a common issue to run into -- especially the deeper into something you get. I certainly know I've made said mistake, especially with running this channel. Anyway, the thing I'd focus on, recognizing that, is just doing your best to deliver on that experience. It gives a measurement tool you can control.
@@cafezin003 I'm glad to help! It's one of the reasons I made this channel, after all. Hopefully, some of the other stuff I've done (or will do) will also be useful to you! Such as what I mentioned with that focus, I will be expanding on that much more (including how to use it) in November.
Commenting for the algorithm gods!

Hmm... I should do make a video on genre blending sometimes, as there's something I've always kept in mind for pulling it off.

@@story_marc So much interesting stuff upcoming! I'm happy to have found another favourite writing channel.
@@tripwire202 Here's hoping I can keep delivering. 😆 I just got to make sure to pace stuff well.
