My father was married for 61 years to my mum. Adored her. He got cancer and in the last months cut her out of his life completely. Looking death in the eye can make people do the most out of character things. Take heart Bill. He loved you.

When my mom was dying of cancer, it completly wrecked her body, the last 10 months of her life since it was discovered too late, she refused to meet anyone. She wanted them to remember her as she was and not the shell of a person that the cancer turned her into... it's very sad and heart breaking, and it's at no fault of anyone...
I suspect that's how I'll be -- except for close family. I assume it's some sort of horrible vanity. At least that's what seems how I identify the origins of the feeling within myself.
I completely understand why. It's about protecting the other person as much as oneself.
Same thing happened with my brother. He was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. I wanted to see him before he passed away, but he specifically stated to our parents that he didn’t want me to see him being so sick. I was really hurt, especially after he passed away only several months later. 😢 Even to this day, I wish could’ve spent one last time with him and said goodbye, while he was still on the physical plane. 🙏🕯️

A good internet friend of mine passed away 10 years ago. I wanted to meet her for the first time, but she absolutely refused my visit requests. She said she didn't want me to see her like that. With huge amount of protest and tears later, I finally agreed but she would not stop me from coming after it all happened. I went to her funeral and met her parents and her spouse. It took over 20 hours to get there and 20 hours to get back. To this day it is one of the things I will never regret doing, but it did eat me up that I never got to say hi to her while she was alive, face to face. Don't take it personally Mr. Shatner, it does happen a lot to people.
That's incredible, I'm glad you got to at least give condolences to your friend. Amazing how you don't have to physically meet someone to feel a deep connection.

When you put it "Why are you so close with another man's wife", you make it sound like men aren't allowed to be friends with females. I have a couple other female friends I am fond of and they are married, it doesn't mean it's weird.

@@brettcooper3893 Takie is a trailblazer in the LGBTQ. I believe I am correct in saying he was the first openly gay actor to star in a primetime series. Now, I don't know for sure but I think it was because of this William Shatner fought so hard to limit his scenes. Having read Mr Shatner's tweets I am inclined to believe he is somewhat homophobic. Just my impression, of course.

While Star Trek is amazing (and I'm a lifelong nerd/geek/HUGE fan), he was absolutely BRILLIANT in Boston Legal. Much better acting, as, of course, you'd expect from someone later in a career. He definitely IS a legend. I met him at a horseshow once in Indiana where I grew up (at the state fair) and told him that I wanted to be an astronaut one day because of him. He told me that he'd really like to go into space one day, too. I'm glad he got to. At this point in my life, I think I'll pass. :)
The original Trek with Shatner, Nimoy, Kelley, et al. is priceless.

In 7th-8th grade, late 60's, I ran home from school every day with my friend to watch Star Trek at 4pm. William Shatner and the entire cast of Star Trek, you will always be my heroes. I still watch and can recite the script of many episodes.
I have seen every episode of Star Trek, the original series at least 20 times each and could also recite the dialogue from every episode.
He looks amazing for someone in their 90s.
When he spoke about Leonard (Nimoy), even **I** teared up.

Shatner's assumption is most likely correct. When my father was dying, he didn't want to see anyone but immediate family. He sent his best friend off rather unceremoniously. It must be a perspective people have when they know they have limited time and energy. A good friend of mine died recently of cancer, I knew him for 34 years, and he never told me he was terminal. He just got distant and didn't really communicate. I'm sure chatting with friends was draining, and he didn't want sympathy. So, I don't think Nimoy had a falling out and kept it secret. He was slowly fading.
While I'm a huge original Star Trek fan, Shatner's work on Boston Legal is my favorite thing he's done. So quick and funny, the perfect role for him.

My first and most enduring recollection of Bill was my father dragging me into our dining room in Montreal in about 1967, pointing to the tv set on which a Star Trek episode was playing, and saying "see him? he's your cousin!"
I never imagined that, almost sixty years later, he'd be more famous than he was back then. He has a small army of cousins in Canada who'll waste no time boasting of their connection to him.

91 actually, his birthday is March 22, here's a kicker, Shatner was born in 1931, and Nimoy was too, on March 26, 1931, so Shatner was 4 days older than Spock.
@@walterraulerson2986 If you watch any of his documentaries that he hosts and is producer of, he is obsessed with death and terrified of it. The best examples is when he interviews the other ST captains and he asks each one about it, or the back yard interview with him and Nimoy called Mind Meld: Secrets Behind the Voyage of a Lifetime.
He's 91 now. In March he turns 92. He's having a good run. He also has access to skin treatments and other things most people can't afford.
One of the most talented men to ever land in Hollywood. He was a successful actor, a successful writer, a successful TV show host and a successful pitchman.
William is an example of a man who just works. He finds things to do. Like you said he has done a ton of different things. His priceline commercials were great and made him a lot of money.

I've watched those productions " Star Trek Continues ". The production values are impressive. It's hard to believe it's an amateur production.
But it really just reminds me how much I wish TOS had gone on for at least a 4th season....when I've watched this fan produced show I end up switching to TOS on Paramount +...lol...
It's like a homesick feeling I experience.
But I recognize there is no other amateur Star Trek series that even comes close to Star Trek Continues in terms of quality.

Well listening to this interview, it’s understandable now. Some people when they are close to death don’t want their dearest friends seeing them in a frail state. I think Leonard just wanted Shatner to remember him as he was. I’m still gutted by his death…and Nichelle’s also.
There was a rift between them though. Even in the 1970s. According to some of his fellow actors, Shatner could be a pompous horse's behind. Then again, he was a whole lot more successful than most of them, so it may have been jealousy.
My father just allowed my mom and I there when he was dying of pancreatic cancer. He didn't want his coworkers that he worked with for 47 years at General Dynamics Electric Boat to see him in that horrible condition the chemo put him in.
@@Carolina-nn6ye Chemo just drains a person of life. It might kill the cancer, but it takes a bit of the life from the patient as well.
@@Gamevet Radiation CAUSES cancer, and is still used to TREAT cancer. It kills the cancer at the area treated but causes secondary cancers.
My dad was fortunate, in a way, that they caught it too late. His pancreas was "filled with tumors" when It was discovered. His aggressive chemo made his feet swell to an unbelievable size, he couldn't wear regular shoes, just the kind that overlapped material closed by velcro. He didn't want ANYONE to see him like that.
I say he was fortunate because he didn't have to go through constant operations, parts taken from him, constant infections FROM to wound area, like I know of other people that have, who ultimately lose their battle anyway.
Understandable not wanting to see him yes, but not replying to his message, a phone call or even an email saying goodbye? Something was off there.
Amazing how he looks so much younger and fitter than his age, all star trek actors are legends to me, what a gift they gave x
The magic about Star Trek was not science fiction stories, look to future, the starships or other things. It was the very special friendship between Shatner und Nimoy. That is why that no other Star Trek serial could reach the same success.
Shatner is a living legend. He could turn up in any corner of this planet and pull a gigantic crowd of thousands of fans in seconds. No doubts in my mind that Nimoy loved him, these men were friends for too long for that sort of history to just fade into nothing.

Honestly from watching the clip there's no way you could tell he's 91 , he seems much, much younger especially with his enthusiasm about his career and life itself.

I believe William Shatner. Sometimes people do change when they get ill. I believe Leonard Nimoy actually did love him, he was just ill. They both, along with the other cast members, brought many hours of entertainment to many people.

Gene L. Coon was far more than "just" a writer! You know this but some readers won't, Gene L. was responsible for MANY of the greatest and most memorable things about Star Trek. I'm a Trek "dee[p dive" aficionado since I was about six, well..until Abrams and others ruined it. But Strange New Worlds brought back hope. As for Trek and just about everything else, while I don't have a perfect photographic memory, I come damn close. The Ande story is just one of the things in my memory and while I never met her but always loved her "girl cojones". Glad she's happy, "down under". Pleasure , meeting you Kathleen :)

I really dont know. After, who my family refers to as 'Grandpa Gene,' passed, I never followed Star Trek. I hadn't ever watched anyway, I was in boarding school when it was a thing, so it, along with most everything TV, wasn't an interest to me.

What’s worse is when you have a friend who inexplicably cuts you out of his life despite your multiple attempts to reconnect over the years.
After a while you say to yourself that I guess the relationship didn’t matter to them as much as it did to you and move on. But it does definitely hurt and you find yourself asking why it had to be like that

I must agree that for being over 90, Shatner looks great. I went to a Star Trek convention in 1991 in Seattle hosting both Shatner and Nemoy and we thought they were old then and that was over 30 years ago! It was priceless.
1:15 My favorite part of the Shatner space documentary is when he admitted openly and without hesitation that he was afraid of doing that trip.
He is so honest about *everything.* I'm sure if he read this comment, he would say, "I'm just old, and I don't care anymore."

Seems he instigated the animosity because of his narcissism. Simple as that. As a manipulative narcissist he knows talking bad looks bad and so doesn't do it. Classic textbook stuff.
And Kirk is my favorite Captain and TOS is the my favorite series so don't think this a Shatner hate fest. Never met him either, so could be completely wrong. Just that decades of examples and patterns are here. My 2 cents. Either way, here we are, so.
To be honest it doesn’t actually make sense what went down.
It does appear to be jealousy.
Because Leonard Nimoy and Deforest Kelley did get along with him, and they were both as successful as him.
And Shatner has never said anything negative about his cast members. I guess though he may have been a bit of an in-your-face kind of guy and may have gotten a bit too carried away a bit with his shenanigans which may have annoyed his cast members. But sometimes there are times he looks pretty insecure, so he may just have a low self-esteem. Which might explain his cockiness.
But again nobody knows what was really going on, so we can't judge.
His fitness and mental acuity at 91 are amazing.
That is so sad to hear, I'm glad that Leonard's daughter reached out to William, after her father's death.

I listened to a podcast with Shatner recently, and I simply do not understand how he can still be so sharp and sensitive, and together. Literally, I did not think someone could possibly have such facilities at that age. I do know that old age somewhat marches slower for people with strong intellect, and the way in which he still speaks I think it is clear he still possesses a great capacity to think and to feel. Ghosts live long in those who have a good memory.

A couple of years ago, I was at a yard sale, inside the house for sale, was a framed double signed photos of Shatner...at first, I was not going to even bother asking how much, my wife at the time talked me into just asking.....the lady said "how about 20 bucks" - I don't think I have ever gotten a bill out of my wallet that quick. Both autos are certified and it hangs on my wall.

I saw him live in a stage play called "Otherwise Engaged" at the Beverly Canon Theatre in LA many years ago. I have moved around so much I think I lost the program, but I remember his performance very well. He was awesome. I grew up with Captain Kirk and would love to meet him someday.

Sometimes we all get a little down about having to grow old, but I tell ya what. THIS is what we can hope for. You'd never know this man is 91 if you didn't know who he was. Amazing.
It's really sad he couldn't see Leonard again before his death, but as mentioned in the interview sometimes when people know theyre dying they don't like being seen that way, and would prefer the person remember them the way they were. ☹
I was a teenager when Star Trek came out on TV in the 60s and it was a fabulous program!
I can't believe that is a 91 year old man, he looks like he is in his 60's. He is still so active too, he was just on the masked singer as one of the costumed characters singing and dancing. Talk about aging beautifully.
It is all too common for the really ill to cut themselves off from friends and family members. I think it's down to them not wanting to be seen as frail and to keep some sense of dignity before death. There needs to be more sociological and psychological research into this pattern of behaviour, which actually also occurs throughout the mammalian kingdom too (so it's not species-specific behaviour).

Well, a person in sickness often time is depressed, they’ve lost a lot. No dopamine hits, no feel good hormones being secreted.
Yes. I have had that recently with a decades long friend who would speak on the phone but didn't want anyone visiting him while he was in palliative care pretty well through to the end. I understood completely and I think I would probably be the same. However he was still prepared to speak to me on the phone. Nimoy wouldn't communicate with Shatner at all so there may have been something more to it.

Such a wise man blessed with good looks & special talent to forge a lengthy career. But he has a self-awareness that is so liberating to hear. And to learn from.
My best friend (and surrogate father) was quickly dying from heart disease. I (in New York) called him (in LA) too late. He was bedridden; he'd lost half of his vision and (most important to him) he could no longer drive a car. Driving is like a sacrament in Los Angeles. The town was built around driving. Driving is one true freedom in SoCal. When I finally got him on the phone (close to the end), he told me (gently) that he wasn't seeing any old friends--just two of his grandchildren who lived with him when they were growing up. We said our sincere goodbyes and I thanked him for all the things he taught me. We didn't drag it out--we just ended by saying "I'll see you around..." People are not necessarily themselves when they know they are dying--and that is not your fault--or there's...
As I understand it, Shatner had asked Nimoy to participate in "The Captains" documentary, and Nimoy refused. Shatner then had his camera crew record Nimoy at a convention, and used the footage in the documentary without Nimoy's knowledge. That's reportedly why Nimoy was angry. This has been discussed publicly before, and for Shatner to say now that he doesn't know why Nimoy was angry, or even acknowledge the possibility, seems rather disingenuous.

And according to his memior about his relationship to Leonard, it wasn't the first time he was told no and did the thing anyway. He just thought Leonard didn't actually care that much because up until then he just didn't say anything when Shatner did the thing anyway.
Shamelessly egotistical talent: I’m fine with it but then I don’t even know the man, much less have to live with him.
To add some more context, Leonard was extremely protective of his likeness. He had butted heads with Gene multiple times and had sued Paramount I think over Spock merchandising without any compensation. So he wasn’t happy at all that Bill put him in that movie after he explicitly told him that he didn’t want to participate. He likely felt betrayed.
Loved these shows , these people were and still are Awesome ! I'll take these times and shows with me to my grave. Good times people !! 👍
One thing I really learned in this life is never judge a person the way they morn some one's passing , or do not , I come to learn everybody is completely different when you go threw a loss , and also a person you love very much just may want to die alone , I am one of those people...Look at Norm Mcdonald , he never told anyone he had cancer and was dying...No fuss..Love Shatner and Nimoy , All of them really...

The comment about older people changing before they die happened to both my parents. When the body begins to slowly die it changes in so many ways, and I remember my father who was an absolutely wonderful man and was friends with everyone shunned his two brothers away. Little things that would never have bothered him became mountains and he shunned them until he died. They have told me they have felt the exact same way as William Shatner with Leonard Nimoy. They even used them as their example. It probably was that for Nimoy too.
I had a friend who was my age and we were pals from age 12 till his death at age 47. No matter what was going on or where we were in our lives we talked in person or on the phone at least once a month till he died. He was diagnosed with cancer and never took another call from me or any of our mutual friends. Even his wife shut us out. If he had a funeral it was never publicized…Not judging. Everyone plays to their part..
He still looks amazing 🙏🏿

Have had a crush on William Shatner since I was 10 yrs old. Love him & met him at ST convention in 2016 in New York.
Just saw him last Saturday at Mendel Center. Such high energy and sharper than ever. Bet he could still throw a serious punch at 92.
So sorry for that ending with the friendship. Yes I think maybe Nemony just wasn't in a place to open that deep can of worms on such an emotional reconciliation or goodbye at the end of life. I feel so bad for Mr. Shatner to carry that forward.

It's weird to think how every actor from the original pilot has already passed on, including the then-very young Laurel Goodwin who asked who would have been Eve, and Walter, George and William are the only ones remaining from the original crew still with us. They ALL are legends.
Their amazing brotherhood with Gene's genius, in many ways shaped the world moving forward.
Leonard Nimoy said it himself. When Mr Shatner did the Captains, Nimoy was secretly filmed and included in the program despite his refusal to participate. Nimoy never forgave Shatner.
That’s what I heard. Shatner needs to get a life and admit he stole from his best friend and Leonard was SO offended that he freely gave him NOTHING else. No time. No opportunity to steal anything else. Revisionist Historian.

I understand how William Shatner feels I’ve had fallen outs with former friends of mine none of them haven’t passed away thank god but it just hurts me that some of the friends I’ve had fallen outs with bothers me that i will probably never see or hear from them ever again they don’t like me anymore and I don’t dislike or hate them I don’t like what they did to me or how they hurt me but I have no Ill Will feelings towards any of them I wish them well and I hope they are happy and enjoying their lives sometimes people change or just grow apart or they hurt or backstab or betray u and it’s just sad how sometimes people u were once very close to change over a certain period of time and just don’t like u anymore it’s a shame
Whatever he got from one of those planets he visited when he was captain of the Enterprise is giving him long life 😄👍 live long and prosper Mr. shatner 🖖

@@radrich4873 Maybe it's still too painful for him? As memory serves me, it was around the same time that Deforest Kelly died. A sad time for sure.
@@jasonschlierman412 Deforest Kelley died on the 11th of June, 1999. Shatner's wife (Nerine Kidd) died almost 2 months later on the 9th of August. The timing was close, but not very close IMHO.

@@SeaCrestInNOut Shatner was making a documentary on Star Trek conventions I believe and wanted Nimoy to be in it. Leonard refused and Shatner went and secretly recorded Nimoy and put it in the documentary Nimoy refused to speak to him after that. Bill doesn't want it known.
