  • www.homebuildin... Click on this link for more helpful videos about concrete forms, building foundations and patios. This video will be extremely helpful for anyone planning on building a patio, shed or home foundation on concrete and would like it to be square. Square building foundations make it easier to build anything that is going to be sitting on top of it.

Great video simple straight to the point. I can see clearly now thank you so much it makes so much sense when there is a parallelogram, which diagonal would be shorter and which one longer and how to adjust it. I have been stuck with these string lines all day wondering why but thank you

Excellent video. My dad always insisted on putting a stake in the dead center, and making sure both strings crossed at the same mid-point. He (apparently) had a situation with a pour for a large warehouse where both diagonal measurements were equal length but didn't cross at the same point. Now, this should be reflected in the corners not being square, but I guess at a certain size scale, subtle inaccuracies add up to cause issues. Anyway, I guess this was a big deal for him, because he tells the story every other month ...

Very good explanation. I would just add that while forming, be sure to double check that the 4 dimensions are equal.

Thank you and good point. Something I must have assumed would be self evident, but won't always.

What are your tolerances in this specific example? Is a 1/4” or 1/8 off still considered acceptable? Checking to see if there is a rule of thumb based on size of form.

It would depend upon the size, for example 1/4 of an inch might be a problem in a 4' x 4' section, but might be acceptable in a 40' x 40' situation. I think best advice I could give would be to get it as close as humanly possible.

My boards are so bowed, I'm gonna have a slightly bigger pad. I got them all the right lengths, but one corner is so far out of square; but I physically can't adjust it any more, tho my boards are all looking perfectly straight. Better to have too much than not enough.
I also used another board to be certain the length doesn't bow into the middle, but try as I might, the square is never right. I'm off an inch to 2 inches on one end, and the other is off by less than a 1/4 of an inch.

If board is severely bowed , the overall length when it is straight will be different , screwing up your square. This principle assumes exact dimensions with perfectly straight and level boards.

Sorry i understand this posting is old, it may also help you to drive in four stakes into the ground, run a string line around the perimeter, and get the four stakes square first, then form around them .
