It’s great! My shed has been completed and it turned out nice looking and sturdy and it is way better than the sheds that many of my neighbors had put up. Another great vid Kyle! I work for a small commercial general contracting company and we still use theodolites and builders levels to lay out buildings, but that stabila layout station would be great!

I'm not a contractor but I totally understood everything you said, especially the part where the grade or lot isn't level and using just tapes will get you close but not spot on. For me close is good enough usually, but if there was any way I could justify buying that 180L, I would. Anyhow, I'm rambling, great video and learned a lot from you. Thanks Kyle!
I use this Stabila also, excellent device. I would recommend checking it's calibration occasionally in the shop using reference marks on floor and walls. I've never had an issue with mine, always checks out but can't be sure otherwise.
Ranken survey had 5 units come in they had to send back to China because they couldnt get them accurate enough to be considered "calibrated" to begin with, quad 4000 or bust, its the original and 10,000 times better

Hey Kyle, I just wanted to say how much I thoroughly enjoyed the video. The layout station really comes into it's element when you throw in uneven ground! A similar future video explaining the differences between plumb and level and how to find them would be great too. A simple, albeit primative method that I really like is a clear plastic hose and water to get a level, a few drops of food colouring also really helps to make it easy to see too :)
Excellent video . Now it would be great that you could show us how to use it as a grade stick . Have seen you use the laser many times and measure the height of the columns . You have your metal brackets bolted into place and you use the grade stick to measure for height and mark down the numbers on the brackets . I have no idea what those numbers are . Thanks
The laser level shoots out a beam of laser light that is absolutely level, 360° around the laser level base (head). You then go to the spot of a marked, known elevation with a rod (can be any straight stick) and the laser sensor. Hold the rod on top of that spot as plumb as you can. Then move the sensor up or down on the rod until it picks up the exact height of the laser beam being projected out by the laser base (the sensor will give off a constant tone). Attach the sensor to the rod. Now, wherever you go on the site you can hold the rod on any spot, move the rod with the sensor attached, up or down until you get that constant tone again. Then you know the bottom of the rod is at the exact same elevation as the original known spot. It’s important to remember that, the sensor on the rod, only tells you when it is level with the base. The bottom of the rod is the ‘business end’ and is at the actual elevation you’re looking for. *The numbers he’s writing down on the brackets, is the difference in height, between the bracket elevation and the known elevation.

Great job Kyle as always. Another way to find square without the app is A2 x B2 = C2. This works well with a regular calculator. I’ve always liked math as well. Someone reminded me of this formula when they set up large temporary tents. Thank you again for the content.
Hey Kyle - I know this is an older video, but I am curious on the comparison between this and the LAR 350. It seems like there are some overlapping uses for both. ie, it seems like you can square with the 350 on its side, but then you can also capture grade with the 180. I haven't found any real good comparison videos out there. If you had to own one, which would it be? If you have some thoughts I'd greatly appreciate it!
This is all a newer and less expensive version of what we were using for survey layouts back in 1990. We had the laser on a tripod and a prism on an extending rod. Did this for setting miles of easements for utility runs. Mostly phone and fiber.

I didn't catch whether it measured distance as well? I guess once string lines up and horizontal you could get accurate measures with a tape. Without having to readjust for square from the manual method. Sorry just talking that through. Good tool i think i get it.

Great explanation and video! This maybe a stupid question but I will ask anyways. With the Lazer calibrated to your property line distance and reading 90* to the right and 90* to the left of the main lazer, does it also indicate the opposite corner from the lazer unit? Or at that point would you mark all your first indicated points then set the hand held unit at the indicated 90* point and move the main lazer unit to the opposite corner until it notifies you as the unit is moved to get your completed square or rectangle layout? Just wondering how much it does for $1500.
Will it also read the distance you’re looking for? For example, if you’re trying to square up a 20’x40’ building will it let you know when you’ve reached 20’ or 40’?
How about finding square Ina remodel job , say maybe doing flooring in a 30 year home , starting square is easier then going behind someone remodeling . Great video

You just added a tool to my list for the masonry company that I'm trying to launch next season. Also in your defense of not going over the entire pythagorean theorem it is incredibly difficult to actually do those calculations in imperial measurements, base 12 number system with fractions thrown in for good measure lol.
Another way to find square without using any math and only using one tape is the intersecting arc method. Suppose you are trying to make a rectangle 60’x 40’: -Like the method Kyle explained, establish your first control line and mark it whether it be a chalk line on something stationary or a string line from one stake to another. -Estimate (or measure) the approximate center of your first control line and mark it. From that center mark, measure each way, on the line, any random number you want. The larger, the better, relative to whatever it is you are trying to establish ‘square’ for. -From the center mark, pull a perpendicular measurement of about 40’. Just estimate as best you can, perpendicular. You don’t have to be perfect. Perfect will come from the next couple steps. -Now from one of the randomly measured dimension marks from center, measure out to your approximately perpendicular 40’ mark. Again it doesn’t have to be exact. Swing and mark an arc, about 1’ or 2’ long. -Repeat the last step from the other mark on your first control line. The intersection of those 2 arcs will be exactly square or perpendicular from your original control line. You now have 2 lines, square to each other, that you can measure any dimensions you want, on an ‘X’ and ‘Y’ axis and be guaranteed of squareness. A simple sketch would make this much easier to explain but it’s really not very difficult, doesn’t require any math and works with any numbers you would like to use.

Thats probably the 1st "expensive" tool I've seen u with that i see value in, n if i could afford it I'd buy it in a heartbeat (unlike that damn 4k work station). Here in Jamaica its a lot of hills n to square a building on a slope of 25 to 30 degrees over a 50' span is a hell of a job. That would make the job 99% easier. My question/s tho is, when on the tripod how do u identify where that plumb laser would be on the ground? And 2 does that device measure the horizontal disrance the receiver is away from it?
What a great tutorial Kyle...the visuals made it very easy to understand..im not a builder just a beginner DIY 'r ... gonna try to build a small generator shed soon with no skills!
I build aluminum boats and heres a trick I found for fractions. If you want to cut a fraction in half, let's say 5/8, just double the denominator. Half of 5/8 is 5/16. You can also double the fraction with the same reversed trick . 3/16 doubled is 3/8. Sometimes it gets a lil messy. Example: doubling something like 5/8 and youll get 5/4. Just use the 4/4 as your whole number and you have 1/4 left, so it would be 1 1/4. Once you get the hang of it, it's really easy and quick. And remember when you're adding fractions, make sure the denominator is the same for both. This saves a lot of time as I find manually calculating fractions sometimes confusing. I sit there and triple check my numbers because I don't trust myself lol hope this helps at least someone

You could for sure... once you have a constant line you could use the layout station to get a perfect perpendicular line for a wall

Here in Jamaica its a lot of hills n to square a building on a slope of 25 to 30 degrees over a 50' span is a hell of a job. That would make the job 99% easier. My question/s tho is, when on the tripod how do u identify where that plumb laser would be on the ground? And 2 does that device measure the horizontal disrance the receiver is away from it?

Mesh 5-12-13 is more useful for builders. Both are called “Pythagorean triples” if you google that term you’ll get a long list of them.
3,4,5 works BECAUSE of the Pythagorean theorem, not just coincidentally.

I build aluminum boats and heres a trick I found for fractions. If you want to cut a fraction in half, let's say 5/8, just double the denominator. Half of 5/8 is 5/16.
You can also double the fraction with the same reversed trick . 3/16 doubled is 3/8. Sometimes it gets a lil messy. Example: doubling something like 5/8 and youll get 5/4. Just use the 4/4 as your whole number and you have 1/4 left, so it would be 1 1/4. Once you get the hang of it, it's really easy and quick. And remember when you're adding fractions, make sure the denominator is the same for both. This saves a lot of time as I find manually calculating fractions sometimes confusing. I sit there and triple check my numbers because I don't trust myself lol hope this helps at least someone

Ok, you explained the 90 degree using the laser but that is only 2 sides of the project. How do I lay out the other 2 sides using the laser?

So it’s a 3 line lazer that’s long distance so what do you think about the Milwaukee m12 new self leveling lazer that goes to 250 feet for 700 that comes with the receiver, now this lazer the m180 is $2000 now
