  • Today I take a look at both the anime's of Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Kai, comparing them both, and thinking about which is the better option if you are trying to decide which one to watch!
Dragon Ball Z was first released as an Anime in 1989 in Japan, with Dragon Ball Z Kai not being released until 2009. So with 30 years inbetween the releases of the same story, what arguments are there for watching each of these options?
Let me know if there is anything I have missed out about either version, or just leave your opinion in the comment section below too!
    I hope you enjoy it!

I have shown my family the Kai version only. Mainly because of less filler and lower episode count. Rather than staring at character's faces for 5 seconds in the original, I went with the faster paced and main plot focused version.

DB Kai definitely has the blood, you just need to get the uncensored version. Also, the music in Kai is pretty good too, but in a different way. And also, Kai is far more well paced and engaging.

@@karebushmarebu233 Yes you're right. Some minor changes, which include removing the middle finger sign from a few scenes, but a lot of the blood is still there. And as I said, the Raditz episodes are censored (black blood like you say).
That aside, the animation is much cleaner, the pacing so much better, mostly no filler, and the story follows the manga much better.

@@El3ctr0Lun4 yeah Kai and Z both have up and downsides. For instance for me, the BF soundtrack for the Z dub is an integral part of the show, and Kai doesn't feel the same without it, Kai does have a more "accurate" translation for the most part, but sometimes it's more accurate in a literal sense while being less accurate in terms of conveying the intended emotioal effect. For instance some lines are translated much more directly, the problem this brings up tho is that certian lines said in Japanese have a certian impact to a Japanese speaker because of the cultural connotations around certian phrases, but when translated directly into English in a literal sense it looses its intended meaning even though the words themselves are more close to the English equivalents than the Z translation
I can't remeber a specific example right now, but just as a parallel I'll use Chinese (Manderin) to English translation as an example since I'm more familiar with those languages
你吃了吗 is a Common Chinese phrase, 你 is you, 吃 is eat, 了 is a completion marker and 吗 turns the whole thing Into a yes or no question. So when translated directly into English it means something along the lines of "have you eaten?" Or
      "Have you ate yet?"
The problem with this translation is that in English it seems like you are genuinly being asked if you have had any food today, but this phrase is actually just used as a greeting in Chinese. Its similiar to asking "how you doing?" When first seeing someone, you're not actually asking how they are doing, you are just saying "hello".
So using this example, you can see why Kais translation, even though it is more accurate, sometimes falls short becuase it translates certian passages very literally and In doing so looses its orginal meaning.
I think this is why some think certian lines sound more "badasa" in the Z version, since they more accurately convey the intended emotion as oppossed to the intended words.
That being said, Kais translation is generally done better, for the most part. The pacing is a lot better aswell, as someone who's read the manga tho I enjoy the orginal anime as it's different enough from the manga to make it feel worth watching, with Kai I'd rather just read the manga as it's so similiar.
But yeah I can understand why a lot kf people like Kai, I personally think the best experience would be if someone edited the two shows together. Keep most of the pacing of Kai, but keep some of the better filler episodes from Z like kid Gohams development, keep the soundtrack from Z dub, cleaner animation from Kai, and possibley a mix of the two translations (mainly kai but with a smidgen of Z at the most "epic" or "emotional" parts). The mixed translation thing might now work thigh cause of differing audio quality, eh it'll never happen anyways, just a pipe dream :)

@@karebushmarebu233 I'm not too attached to the Bruce Faulconer soundtrack. I grew up watching the original Dragon Ball series, with all the original Japanese music, but dubbed in my native language - Romanian. Later on I watched DBZ Saiyan and Frieza sagas on a German TV channel, so the show was dubbed in German with the original JP music, and soon after it was aired on Cartoon Netwoork in English, which had the Faulconer music.
I doubt that Kai translates things word for word - normally when you dub or subtitle any movie or TV show, you do a translation and adaptation. The Funimation version of DBZ however had written an fully new script, changing the motivations and even backgrounds of some characters, Goku is portrayed as a saviour and protector of life (much like Superman) rather than a guy who likes to fight. The point of the KAI dub was that it respected the original script, while still translating and adapting the dialogue.

Im from Argentina and I grew up with the latin version of DBZ , the thing was , 20+ years ago , dub and editing the original footage was harder than now with all the digital technology. So , voice actors had to make a few changes to the lines to keep the phase, and they gave the original dub a whole another feeling ( in a good way ).
Now , the big sell point of kai is being closer to the original japanese manga, but for some reason they decided to base the latin version in the english version. So they keep the minor changes the english version did , and then added a few more of our own. Then Kai Isnt that closer to the manga than the original broadcast.
Then , they changed almost the entire voice cast cause of money or age , and the original cast was well know in the Latin fanbase for givin the characters more dark or gruesome feeling in their dubs ( screams in particular ). But they keep the english version phasing that already most of the latin fans feels more soft.
The result is a mixed bags of feelings and a lot of people asking why even Kai is a thing.

Great video. For me, the pacing is a HUGEEEE benefit to watching the original DBZ. In Kai, the most epic scenes happen so fast and are glossed over very quickly. The music in Z is superior, and the build up to epic scenes is incredible. In Kai, it is so fast that you don't get the epic release in tension that you get from Z.

@history of dragon ball here's a bit of a crazy idea. i think you made a video on mystic(ultimate) gohan and explained how he could possibly still go super saiyan while in his ultimate form because the super saiyan transformation is a power multiplier. i'm not sure where i saw/heard it, but it was possible that old kai could have done the same to goku and unlocked his ultimate form if given time. so here's my thoughts.
1- if old kai had unlocked goku's ultimate form, could it have been combined with anything other than the super saiyan transformations? could it have been combined with goku's god forms? dragonball super showed that goku was able to combine the kaio-ken with super saiyan blue, so could his ultimate form be combined with super saiyan god and super saiyan blue like the kaio-ken was? what kind of power boost would goku get?
2- could goku's ultimate form be combined ultra instinct? what kind of power boost would result from this? what you're basically getting from the 2 is the max potential of the ultimate form combined with no limitations on movement for ultra instinct, which results in much greater reaction speed, giving the user a huge boost in strength/power for attacks and dodging opponents attacks.

I just wish fans of both dubs quit acting superior over each other. Love what you love and stick with it. No need to crap on someone else for what they prefer.
Edit: People may disagree, but in my opinion, the perfect dub of DBZ would be mostly the Kai version, but replace Gohan's new VA (Colleen) for the original VA (Stehpanie) and either have the Faulconer or Kikuchi score.

From someone who grew up watching Original Dragon Ball first, DBZ second and DBZ Kai for last.
I got into Dragon Ball in the late 1990's.
I can honestly suggest you to watch the First Arc of DBZ on it's original 90's version.
The first Arc of Z is very similar to the OG DB Art Style, Tone and how amazing filler could help in there.
Once the Saiyan Arc (First Arc) is concluded; i keep watching DBZ in the Kai Version.

      @robertosoto2505 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@gamewriteeye769 I'll give you a few tips.
None of the OG DB Movies are canon, they're retelling stories of the show, with a few changes. Like made up stories involving canon & non canon characters, if you're interested on watching the movies, once you're done w/ Dragon Ball, i will tell you in which order you should watch them:
      1. Curse of the Blood Rubies
      2. Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle
      3. Path To Power
      4. Mystical Adventure
As far as Dragon Ball Z, i'd suggest you to watch the first Arc on the original Z version from the 90's cuz just like OG DB filler helps a lot in there. Not only that, but the Kai version made a big mistake on spoiling Goku's origins and his connection to an important villain from the Namek Arc (the 2nd arc of Z) in the pilot episode; making the first Arc of Z completely irrelevant.
PS: Filler doesn't help DBZ that much (only in the first arc), that's why i always choose the Kai Version.

The movies you said I'll keep in mind, and there's others I heard that's good like the Broly movie. The original series has been pain to get through though and that's why I'm considering Kai over Z to fix those older era show issues.

Now with Kai I like the fact it covers a lot quicker and skips filler. However, I've listened to the Z track a lot and some of the filler or the extended scenes like Vegeta speech to Goku or Gohan SSJ2 transformation and Goku SSJ3 transformation and Final Flash and Vegetas theme. However the Kai music isn't bad either at least so far for me and I do prefer the higher resolution but I don't mind the grainer animation and I don't mind the colours potentially being off in Z but in KAI the art is corrected as some shots in Z are little off sometimes. So its like do I want better pacing and art, while sacrificing some of the depth in some places like Vegeta and the gohan piccolo training or do I want the faulconer track and less censorship but worse pacing and lower quality artstyle.

This question has caused a battle between my soul and my spirit. Because the most epic transformations all happen in Z. When it comes to transformations OG DBZ Hit hardest. Kai does a damn good job, but it cannot hold a candle to DBZ when it comes to these moments. Experiencing the moment Goku transformed into a super Saiyan for the very first time “ I won’t let you get away with this” bruh I damn near transformed.
And then experiencing Gohan become a super Saiyan two for the very first time oh my God, is beyond words. I was there, I was right there I felt as though, no I went through a great deal of emotions from that transformation alone. The Bruce falconer score hits your soul it will make a grown man cry. I literally got Scheels the same thing happened to me with Goku’s on Namek, but this was a higher level I felt the power, I thought like I was going to transform I damn near cried.
Don’t get me started on Super saying three Goku, the first time I saw him transform was actually on TH-cam it was a clip of the OGDBZ anime, I was literally blown away pause no Homo. I got chills I don’t know what to think I don’t know what to do all I could do was filled the intense power come from Goku I thought like the earth was about to destroyed. I love how demonic and disaster Lee Goku‘s power felt at this level. Nobody ever felt a power like this before. On top of that his Chi energy was filled from earth all the way to the sacred planet of the Keis not only that once I took a deep dive into power scaling I learned that this was only a small fraction of Goku‘s power level as a super Saiyan three he wasn’t nowhere near his maximum power level. This shit was beyond I’m telling you each one of these transformations unlock something in your mind in your body that you never knew was there. And OGDBZ hit this was the key to unlocking these moments this emotion are you feeling a connection to these characters you’ve never had for any other anime in your life.
Now I will say this DBZ Kai is technically better when it comes to everything else no lie I give love and respect to everything I did the art animation style the Chris clean look, cutting down the filler to bare minimum all filler in Chi is Canon because it is exclusive to the manga and enhances the story. But yo I’m so glad I got to experience OGDBZ transformations. OGDBZ is full of flaws the episodes are too long we love the screaming so that’s never a problem, but when you experience those transformations that I just described, it didn’t matter how many years an episode took to get up to that point you were fully immersed in the moment of power of transformation. DBZ Kai is greater all around than OGDBZ. But what OGDBZ did do far greater then Kai was the elemental moment of each Super Saiyan transformation.

Regarding Dragon Ball Z original... I often found myself fast forwarding through sections multiple times of episodes on rewatching just to get to the "good bits". Especially through the Freiza Saga.
I actually remember being in school and being disappointed sometimes because there were only 1 episode a day and sometimes an episode would start and end at pretty much the same point where it began without anything really happening of significance inbetween (charging up a spirit bomb or something). Which was kind of frustrating.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the series... but GEEZ did a few parts really drag its heels to beyond ridiculous "eyerolling" degrees at times. Even as a kid of like 9 I remember wondering just how stupid the creators of the show must have thought I was to not realise what they were obviously doing. It would sometimes feel a little patronising. I mean sometimes they even were reusing images and animated sequences repeatedly in the same episode just to drag it out even longer without giving any expansion on characters or motivations or anything at all of any real substance.
So that they streamlined the show sounds appealing just for potentially that aspect alone... however to date I still haven't seen the Kai version yet. So I can't really make any comparison.

I grew up on the OG episodes I’m a 93’ Baby. Toonami was my once a day dose of the OG DBZ. I remember when they would get to the last episode of the Buu saga they would restart the whole Saga to the very beginning. Because I’m assuming they weren’t ready to release the last episodes of the Buu saga when he turned to kid Buu. But this was when you had to wait for the new episodes to drop. Now you can binge everything we waited months and years for in hours and weeks to know everything lol. As a kid I didn’t realize how much talking and filler it was because you were always on edge to wait for the next mini fight lol. But yea the OG episodes and movies are what I grew up on lol

I haven’t watched all of the original, but I kinda wish we got the animation from Kai and the audio and music from Z. Now that would be sick. But then again there is indeed a charm to The original top, knowing that it was made so many years ago and yet still holds up

Choosing between Z dub and kai is like choosing between eating at taco bell (z dub) over eating at an authentic Mexican restaurant (kai). The americanized version is watered down and has nothing on the OG.

I love OG DBZ but it doesn’t hold up as well today. The filler is mostly bad and ruins the pacing and continuity overall. And as far as the dub goes at least; it takes a bit too many creative liberties especially with the characterization of Goku.
Kai on the other hand obviously looks nicer and has near perfect pacing, it has little to no filler, and the dub is almost perfectly manga-accurate unlike og DBZ. And ik people don’t like the censorship of Kai but there is an uncensored version of it.

  • @Shamoose010

Prefer the music of Z and personally enjoy the fillers. But Kai definitely wins on quality and pacing. If showing someone for first time I'd recommend Kai now.

  • @gillysummerss

If you’re trying to introduce someone to dragon ball z you start them with the Funi dub always just for your own pure nostalgic satisfaction.
Kai is better with pacing and voice performance in certain parts but there are moments from the English dub that can’t be replicated.
I have noticed that the sub of Z is way better paced for some sorta weird reason. It flows way better. When the shots linger it feels like it adds depth more than it’s filling time.

Z's dub has more epic moments thanks to Faulconer's score, but Kai's dub has the cast putting over a decade of experience of voicing the characters to work. But behind-the-scenes stuff with the newer voice actors in Kai from the recent drama cast a shadow onto that dub that Z doesn't have.

I grew up with the Ocean dub and Funimation dub, but I've finally just got around to watching Kai for the first time. For as much nostalgia as the old dubs hold for me, if I were to recommend a version to someone new to the series, I would probably go with Kai. The original cuts episode count of 291 sounds like it would be intimidating to a newcomer. Kai was able to cut the series down to almost half of that, and the pacing is much better, not to mention most of the main cast was retained from the funimation dub, so there isn't that awkward period after the switch over from Ocean where the voice actors are trying to figure their characters out, so the line delivery is fairly smooth throughout the series. There are some weird animation moments where they tried to clean up certain frames and ended up making them look like they were done in flash animation, but overall I think Kai is the superior version of the story. Still miss Falconer's music though.

@marcoparada6652 I won't defend the whole Falcouner score. A lot of tracks ran from forgettable to pointless noise, but he had some damn good tracks, too. The Super Saiyan theme, Cells Theme, Hell's Bells and Final Flash for Vegeta, Gohan's theme, and Goku's Sacrifice were all memorable tracks.

I loved the manga as a kid, but found the way the anime drew things out unbearable… that and my country‘s awful dub. Also, Kai is preserved the way the producers of the show and Toriyama as the creator wish it. So for me it’s a no-brained. Kai > Z.

3:15 What do you mean "of course the quality of the animation is going to be of a higher level?" Being more recent does not equate to better animation. And in the case of DBZ and Kai this isn't even a comparison because Kai is just re-edited footage from DBZ.
EDIT: Okay so just a few minutes later you do say that Kai is the same animation as Z, but then you go on and seem to conflate animation quality and image quality. It's the same animation regardless if you're watching it on a VHS taped off TV broadcast or on a remastered Blu ray
