He said that a driver transporting an Air Force general and a Colonel across the base and braked hard to avoid hitting a dog. The keep swerved and rolled, killing all three. He told us to never brake for an animal and to just take our foot off the brake. It'll be sad for the animal but not worth our lives. That was in 1971 or 1972. I remember it vividly and still follow that advice.

Houdini was a remarkable man, and very much a showman. If he was actually scared of a particular stunt, I think most of us would see that as a warning rather than as a challenge.
As a minor point of interest, when HH visited Australia, he became the first person there to ever obtain a private pilot's license.

Yeah, I'm from Fresno and I do remember this. I remember a few segments on the radio station that I listened to discussing this a few day before he tried it. They had several people on there saying exactly what is discussed here. One, that the box he was in would not support that much weight and also that if was able to somehow survive the collapsed box that the cement would dry on the bottom and be way too heavy for him to push out of it. There was a signing sheet for people to sign for him not to do this and thousands of people signed it, but he ignored everybody. After it was done and he died, people were very angry with him because he made his children watch.

  • @EspyMelly

A magic trick should only LOOK dangerous to the audience. The magician and all of their assistants should have researched and practiced the trick so much that it's routine for them at that point and the danger to the performer's life is practically non-existent. The fact that this man decided to do this after his one practice run was with less than half the amount of material, and the extra amount was of a completely different type than he had used, is not just dangerous, it's ludicrous. He was either extremely desperate to realize his dream and prove that he could do it, or delusional. Either way no one should have collaborated with him if they knew how little he had practiced what he was about to do.

For what it's worth, I'd put it at "alarming"... It's a cautionary tale and sight to be sure... "There but for the grace of God..." and so on...
What I honestly find terrifying, however, are those instances where one minute someone's alive and healthy, happy, excited to be so... AND then one little thing changes... just something small "goes wrong" and it's followed by minutes or hours of agony, despair, screaming, fighting for everything they're worth and the rest of us "stuck" in a helpless situation where we can't actually do anything productive to help them out of it... but we listen and watch, sick to our stomachs and feeling ever more worthless, hopeless, and weak for the experience... even after it's all over and the once vibrant person is rendered a cold, unliving thing...
The only thing worse than that, as far as I can think of it... is being trapped in a body that can no longer really do anything, but won't finish dying and let me go... Even a coma's better than being aware of better times and knowing the future is nothing but wasted time... ;o)

At the very least he should have made sure that the coffin could hold at least 30% more weight than he planned to put on it, and that he had an escape route in case of failure, like access at the bottom through a side channel so he could be quickly extracted.

I think a lot of that has to do with social media, and to a lesser extent, cameras in every pocket. Its really easy for someone (any random person) to go into a bystander type syndrome when there's a filter between you and the person (like a phone camera).
As for social media, there's a big distance between strangers on the internet, who are sitting safely somewhere far away, and get a sense of detachment from something they're seeing on screen, and people being physically present, seeing something unfold in front of them.

And while yes, this was incredibly stupid of him, I actually feel a lot of empathy for the guy. He knew what he wanted to do and he and he was willing to do anything, even die, to achieve that. That’s not so much even the part I really respect. I guess it’s that along with the totally child-like sense of doing what it takes to be anything. And that’s something I kind of have to admire. I sincerely wish he had actually adequately planned this stunt so that maybe, he’d have had a chance to achieve it and live on having accomplished his goal.

I think my grandfather was at the stove half watching the special with me. At the time I'm not sure I immediately understood what had happened. I distinctly remember seeing the cave in and being confused. I also remember feeling like I was the only person who'd just seen what I'd seen. And for years it was as if I'd imagined it. I could never find any reference to this incident. No one in my family ever really talked to me about it, I don't recall seeing it on the news. It's possible I blocked it all out. Years later when I'd watch top ten lists about fatal accidents caught on live tv, This one *never* came up. I could never find the verification of what I'd witnessed as a kid. But I *knew* it happened. So for you to cover it 30 years later just blows my mind.

This happens every day in the movie business to some degree. I have seen a lot of safety violations and preventable accidents over the years that were caused by the same hubris. I have seen directors and ad's scream at safety people jumping into shot because they see something wrong, "get out you are ruining my shot!". I have seen a well known actor smash his face into the ground trying to do a stunt he was never trained to do, but the director and stunt coordinator somehow allowed it - production got halted, and the actor had to get reconstructive surgery. I have seen Ad's forgo spfx checks, which led to an in ground mortar blow up in an actor's face (I called him out on that one because I had heard say not to do it.) There was a brand-new stunt woman who got killed because of the pressure to perform instead of voicing concern and waiting on the custom-made helmets to arrive - somehow the coordinator allowed this. The list is endless in this industry, all in the name of the "show must go on!" I quit because of seeing this happen over and over again.
