All hail Dave 😀. It’s great to have colleagues that make you better in ability just because they’re your colleague. The best relationships make it “win win” for both.
I do not know how many other brands out there that comes from factory with front axle vents like my Kioti CK2610. There are a couple videos on TH-cam that show them. I had my tractor for awhile before I realized that the dipstick is also the vent.
I second the recommendation for Larsen Lights. I purchased Larsen Lights back in 2019 for my cab tractor, and they were a HUGE improvement. No regrets whatsoever. I like them so much that when I purchased a new tractor several months ago, I immediately took off the factory lights and replaced them with Larsen Lights.
I’m an experienced off-roader so familiar with portal axels and the like. Your guy is right about the seal/breather failure. One of the common known mods in off-roading is to run a tube to the diff breather to where you fuel up so that it can breathe without taking in any water or mud. You basically just drill a small hole by the gas tank inlet and affix the tube to it.
Excellent video, thank you for posting it. I would recommend venting the axle. I have a 2001 4700 tractor, 5-6 yrs ago had oil seeping from top seal on spindle axle housing, once I vented the axle it’s been bone dry since. One other modification I would recommend. The 2 caps ( freeze plugs) are glued in place. Two weeks ago I was removing snow and when I parked tractor in barn I noticed the 2caps on the floor. Lost 2 gallons of axle fluid without ever knowing the axle was running dry for about an hour. I reglued the caps with ( loctite retaining compound 620 jd recommends it) and as a safety precaution I fabricated 2u shape brackets to support the caps. I used the bottom 2 bolts of the hub gear housing ( mine has 8 bolts) and replaced the pipe oil drain plug with a brass hexagon drain bolt. Auto part stores stock them.i also installed a 1/4” x 1/2” rubber piece glued and fastened to bracket under cap for support and preventing noise vibration. Hope this helps.
Just wanted to say thank you for this video. I have a 3032E, 3039R (Cab), and a 4044M. They all have Otis Innovations vents! 3039R has the bolt on hooks RH door kit. I remember when I saw another video of yours about the vents and ordered one for the 3032E. When I installed it and removed the OEM cap, it made a pretty good hiss and was clearly pressurized. So, all 3 have the vent caps. I believe the 4 series and 3R series have the same front axle by comparing the side by side, so this repair if needed I will be able to do just from this video. Stay safe and thanks again.
After I had the dealer do my both front axles I put the Otis vent in the only thing I would change is the material is so shiny its harder to read than the plastic ones. I don't recall the prices, but it was fair and no issues a year later.
The problem with the receiver mounts is, they tend to wiggle and move around a little. When I did mine before I welded it up under the table, I drilled a half inch hole, ran a bolt and nut into it, welded the nut solid so that I could put tension on that receiver when it was pinned to keep it from moving. Made it work a lot better.
I'm afraid I may have that issue. Also, I didn't get my 'receiver' welding perfectly square, so this isn't good either. Thought I might make the 2" tube quite long...to minimize the wiggle.
Hello Tim. I do not know how they compare to some other brands, but I have some Glarks brand snap ring pliers that have proven excellent for me. I have had them a couple years now and never let me down. They came as a set. Keep videos coming and you guys take care.
Tim - so crazy you just posted this! I have a 1yr old 4066R - and literally just yesterday afternoon I noticed a leak in the same place! That said, your video convinced me to haul it to my dealer to repair! Thank you for all the great videos!!
Wow. That was quite the fix. I think it like several projects I have done, way over my head, but no Dave at hand. 3 weeks later it is finally finished.
My JD tractor had been owned by a rental yard before me. Someone got a little over zealous with a pressure washer and blasted soapy water through one of the front seals. Lucky for me, I had a Dave (named "Ron") to help me through it.
I just had my 4066 into the dealer for that knuckle seal leaking. They said the outer piece was beat up and started corroding a bit, so not sure if I got something stuck in there and rubbing back and force while turning or what. I had the vented dipstick already though. Was under warranty so all good.
Great video! Tim. I want to say the dealer charged around $2k to replace the axle seals on my 2025R. Lucky insurance covered it as part of a collision sort of claim. I discovered a bent tie rod that had caught on or impacted something.
I have a bud with a small series 4 wd John Deere that eats front seals. He's had it fixed at the dealer 3 times and it still leaks after just a few hours (50ish) after the latest repair.
I think it would be fun to tackle projects like this, where I have no idea what I'm doing, and do it with someone that knows what's going on. I learn best from doing and not reading :D
My 2020 3046R , with 280 hrs , is at my dealer at this very moment for this exact problem . The dealer told me the six year drivetrain warranty “should” cover the cost of repairs . I did ask him about his opinion on the need for a vented dipstick and he said there was no need for one . Will be getting more information tomorrow . This definitely is an involved job . Love that lift setup . Great video my friend !
The drive train warranty did cover the cost of new seals for both right and left side of front axel . I also had a leak in the mid PTO shaft seal that was covered under warranty . This tractor is not used for any type of farming ( sand or mud exposure ) so why so many leaks in a tractor with only 280 hrs ?
I did purchase a vented dipstick right after I brought it to the dealership for repair but it’s not the type that bolt on hooks sells , this one has the pressure relief valve .
"Tim and Dave's US tour" coming to a Wheel Hub near you. The right guy for the job. Great video. When mine ever leaks... Trip to the dealer because I doubt I have a 'Dave' in my area or a tractor lift. . I need a vented dipstick PDQ.
Even if the US goes metric you will still use both. 🇨🇦 went formerly to Metric on April 1 1975 and we use both. One thing I hate is a tape measure with inches and centimetres. My last three tapes I bought were inches only, much better for me. In fact my 2014 1025r I believe is half and half. It’s the hardest piece of equipment I have worked on to try and guess the size wrench needed.
When I got my LS tractor home after the dealer dropped it off, I thought I would check the oil in the front axle. It has a dipstick on the other side. And the tractor was sitting level, it showed it was low, so I filled it. Then we moved from Florida to Missouri few years later. Now the ground is not level and that oil starts coming out of the vent and I check it again and it's over filled. So after a few days I noticed more oil is still coming out the vent and then all of a sudden it quits. It doesn't appear to be leaking now but I guess I will have to check it again and see if it has oil in it. It doesn't make any noise when driving it. So i will try and find a level spot to check it.
I am also a “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” person as well, unless we are talking parts that are safety critical or could leave me stranded deep in the boonies. Then I will preemptively replace parts that look to be approaching failure.
Tim, I did that project about three years ago on my 3520 and it was on the left side that started leaking. It is an involved process only thing is I had the John Deere manual to guide me through it. One of my questions is, do you use the low vis hydraulic -gear Fluid or is there somebody else who makes that product also, did you use the special lock tight glue in what John Deere recommends to install all those seals and I never did install vent in my axle. I never had any issues as of today I didn’t find out about it until afterwards.
Hey Tim, I'm not sure if you get anything out of my vented cap purchase with the ttwt code usage. But I thought I'd let you know that they are getting you to promote without giving the customers a discount. Before the discount my total showed $100 with free shipping. After I applied the code it showed a total of $100 and code canceling a $5 delivery fee. Just FYI.
The best thing u can do to help those wheel seals from leaking is to use gear oil in front axle we have tym and koiti both have gear oil in front axle with no leaks its just slow to drain when u do a service
You do many of these you'll want a good set of snap-ring pliers, and I think the older one piece seals did better than the 2 piece (on my tractor anyway), I have already replaced two of the 2-piece seals on one side (cleaned thoroughly) with a limited number of hours, but in all fairness, the tractor has not been run in the best environment
I added the axle vent days after purchasing my 33R. I did the same with my 2025R. Some will argue it’s not necessary. I say it’s a very cheap investment compared to what you just went through.
Tim, I remember an episode where you visited GCI Turf in NC. He recently released a couple of videos about a 2000 ft driveway he was working to repair for a family with a special needs child. The driveway is badly eroded and he is doing the work for free but he needs help buying the tons of gravel needed to repair the road so the erosion doesn’t keep occurring. I don’t know if you would be willing to mention it on one of your videos but I wanted to make you aware of it.
@@TractorTimewithTim I'm with you. We had continuous erosion problems with our driveway. It is on a steep hill and we had to make a ditch, slope the driveway toward it and fill it with big rocks to slow down the water to stop the erosion.
Blows my mind that the dealer doesn’t even own the spanner socket! Scary! At least you know it’s done right and you spent the money on the required specialty tools.
Never power wash around seals or gaskets. Personally, I never power wash any of my equipment. I’ve yet to find anything a garden hose and a little elbow grease couldn’t clean and with far less chance of damage. Other than hydraulic system seals, most are not made to withstand significant pressure.
Great video. Always fun to watch you guys doing something that would give me serious hesitation to start. And I always enjoy seeing your challenger lift in action. Could you repost the name of the yellow racks with you installed on your lift?
Hi Tim. A while back you were having trouble with the 3046 blowing a fuse that caused it to shut down. Did you ever find what was causing that? I may just have to get one of the axle vent kits.
I thought I made it clear that it was a temporary deal….the guy had a few of these several years ago…I finally convinced myself to buy one…he had 10 at that time! Not sure why I didn’t buy them all! :-).
For someone without experience, its best not to see the carnage. Everyone loves sausage, but not everyone enjoys watching the process. Also snap rings tend to come loose under tension, and will orbit very quickly!
Try the Otis innovations vented dipstick first. It might take the pressure off enough to stop the leak. I suspect the socket is different. Having said that, if you want us to fix, we can do.
Great video! So I’m wondering why JD has not fixed this issue at the factory. I have a brand new 2024 3039r with 6 hours on it and it’s already at the shop because the front right side seal is leaking. I have already ordered the vented dipstick right after they picked up the tractor but this is crazy, 6 hrs and leaking. It is covered by the warranty but my mind is still blown over this. Why can’t they just put in vented dipsticks at the factory and be done with this horror show.
Kind Sir.... Can you do a video where... you've told us about grill guards and now axle vents.... you tell us all the things we need to change on 1 -5 series tractors so we dont run into the repairs that you have had to do?
I just purchased 2017 250hrs i thikk it never had any mods should i make any changes to my 1025r the engine shakes bad at idle is that normal you are the best and a fellow christian Butch west carrollton Ohio
That stinks about the wheel seal on the 3046r. I guess I lucked out with mine. Nothing major has been wrong with it. Only thing that just started after 830 hours is I noticed the front loader drops a little bit. Apparently the lift cylinders were known to have problems because the factory used cheap seals in them.
Well, there is metric on the moon!... Imperial units were too confusinfg for the guidance computers, but they worked fine in metric. The displays and screens showed imperial, but in reality metric was the unit used for the Apollo program.
Leaking front seals are not uncommon in the JD utility tractors. My 4 series had one at a pretty young life and needed fixing. Fortunately it was under warranty.
get all the life you can out them lines you can i had some hoses that was around 55 bucks per hose and i sucked all the life out them i could i have yet to find parts cheap for any brand tractor or car
I know you love the discounts that these online dealers can give you. But when it comes time to service if you've been in there a hundred times buying parts they're more likely to loan you the tool or help you out on a late-night parts need. Story of a local guy who always orders all of his tractor parts online. (But calls the dealer to get the part number first) He was out combining one night and about 5:01 on a Saturday night he broke down and needed a part. He called the dealer to ask if they had it which they did, and asked if one of the guys would stick around for an extra half hour so he can pick it up. No one really felt like sticking around so the parts guy told him to order it online and hung up. (There was a few other reasons for the parts guys actions.) Meanwhile me with just my little GX 345 and 4720 have the parts guys personal cell phone number in case I ever need anything after hours. Sometimes relationships mean more than a 5% discount.
If I am in a dealership a hundred times ordering parts then I need a different tractor. I prefer dependability over parts availability, seems to make more and cost less that way.
I get more accurate ordering online compared to my nearest dealer. Saves me multiple trips, time, money, and the repair gets done sooner. This particular dealer rarely have anything for my tractor in stock, so it is at least a 2 day wait, longer if they order the wrong part. Then when they order the wrong part, they up the price above MSRP so the customer ends up covering the cost of their mistake. So, I trust another tractor dealer that has a great online TH-cam presence to order my parts. That company has not failed me once in 20 years.
@@AnimationCPU-y2k24 For the home gamer that wants to order an oil filter for his lawn mower it's no big deal. But it's nice to have a connection at the dealer, for when when I'm moving snow in the middle of a blizzard and my 4720 decides to break a lift link on the 3pt. it's nice to get told "just go rob one off one of the used machines sitting out side to get you going, and we will get one ordered" "It will be here tomorrow morning, no freight charge on that"

If you installed the resistor in parallel with the existing resistor, the total resistance went down. The bulb the sees a greater voltage.

A question, had the vented plug been installed before the seal failed? I followed your advice on Johnny 1 and 3 and did it years ago.
Nope. Just installed it. …after. Too many tractors :-(
Can you share information on where to purchase the work table?
I thought I made it clear that it was a temporary deal….the guy had a few of these several years ago…I finally convinced myself to buy one…he had 10 at that time! Not sure why I didn’t buy them all! :-).
@@TractorTimewithTimThanks. My misunderstanding.
For someone without experience, its best not to see the carnage.
Everyone loves sausage, but not everyone enjoys watching the process.
Also snap rings tend to come loose under tension, and will orbit very quickly!
My 4052 m front seal went out in under 100 hrs
i am wondering if that socket will fit a 1025r. Did a oil changed an noticed my axles is also leaking.
Try the Otis innovations vented dipstick first. It might take the pressure off enough to stop the leak.
I suspect the socket is different.
Having said that, if you want us to fix, we can do.
@@TractorTimewithTim@TractorTimewithTim lol, I live in Florida. That would be one hell of a trip charge
Nice job Tim. I have a question I’m buying a lift. Where did you get the rails for it that hold the tractor?
turfrail.com tell em you saw it on ttwt for a discount.
Great I will thanks
Great video! So I’m wondering why JD has not fixed this issue at the factory. I have a brand new 2024 3039r with 6 hours on it and it’s already at the shop because the front right side seal is leaking. I have already ordered the vented dipstick right after they picked up the tractor but this is crazy, 6 hrs and leaking. It is covered by the warranty but my mind is still blown over this. Why can’t they just put in vented dipsticks at the factory and be done with this horror show.
50% less!WOW! Great video, really enjoyed watching! Love your 3520!How many hours are on the 3046R by now?
I think 125 or so.
@@TractorTimewithTim Thanks!Have a nice sunday(whats left of it)!Mine is over,it is 10:45PM for me :)
So where is the link or info for the socket? I don't see it in the description.
Ugh. I forgot. Sorry. I’m away from home now. I’ll get to it later today.
All Metric sockets in ALL countries are used by 1/4", 3/8" or 1/2" Ratchets.
what lift do you have and poundage, what is the yellow parts that are for tractors. hyperlink?
Contact http;//iaequip.com via phone. Ask them details about ttwt lift
Kind Sir.... Can you do a video where... you've told us about grill guards and now axle vents.... you tell us all the things we need to change on 1 -5 series tractors so we dont run into the repairs that you have had to do?
I do…over time. Hard to put it all in a single video.
Tim how come that wasn't under warranty didn't you buy that new on 23'
I didn’t even ask. We kinda wanted to do the work and show it anyway.
I just purchased 2017 250hrs i thikk it never had any mods should i make any changes to my 1025r the engine shakes bad at idle is that normal you are the best and a fellow christian Butch west carrollton Ohio
Yep. Engine shakes. You can turn up the idle a bit. 1550 is spec for low idle.
Awesome job Dave!
How do you know what codes are what? Do they make code readers for JD like they do for automotive codes?
Not sure. I googled it :-)
I think the service manual may have them.
If the seal fails, can this cause steering issues?
Seal failure allows the oil to leak out, which will cause front wheel drive issues. Gears will get destroyed.
No, not related to steering
Dave reminds me of Jack Black!!
I’m still doubting Dave because the article that you had was from NPR so…😂😂
get all the life you can out them lines you can i had some hoses that was around 55 bucks per hose and i sucked all the life out them i could i have yet to find parts cheap for any brand tractor or car
DDWD indeed.
What's the point of the coupon code if takes money off and then adds more on for the dipstick?
I don’t get that statement.
@TractorTimewithTim when I entered your coupon code it took money off then adds it back on Otis website.
Tim you need to go too harbor freight and get a torx wench
Have done so since then.
Dave looks like Jack Black!!
You should be nicer to the 3520! I like her.
At $110/hr, or more, that would be a seriously expensive repair at the dealer.
(There was a few other reasons for the parts guys actions.)
Meanwhile me with just my little GX 345 and 4720 have the parts guys personal cell phone number in case I ever need anything after hours.
Sometimes relationships mean more than a 5% discount.
If I am in a dealership a hundred times ordering parts then I need a different tractor. I prefer dependability over parts availability, seems to make more and cost less that way.
@@AnimationCPU-y2k24 multiple machines over many years adds up.
But it's nice to have a connection at the dealer, for when when I'm moving snow in the middle of a blizzard and my 4720 decides to break a lift link on the 3pt. it's nice to get told "just go rob one off one of the used machines sitting out side to get you going, and we will get one ordered"
"It will be here tomorrow morning, no freight charge on that"
@@Drew-in-NoDak
I don't think that is typical for dealers and 99%+ of their customers.
As they say... you get what you pay for, the cheaper fittings might of been made with a cheaper metal.
I’m confused. What ‘cheaper fittings’ do you mean? Lots of stuff in this video. I’m having trouble knowing which part you are referring to.
