      Yes. I think the casting in general was rather inspired. I say that as a fan of the novel and the earlier TV adaptation. Well, wait, I am also a fan of the new adaptation, too, but I won’t pretend they’re masterpieces. But I love the ideas and characters so much, I can’t get enough. I wish they would adapt _It_ as a series. The novel is bursting with terrifying monsters. Hell, even the shark from _Jaws_ surfaces to menace a kid in a river in Derry.

    The opening scene with the gay man being attacked and thrown over the bridge is based on a real event that happened in Bangor, ME just before King wrote the book. Some good old boys beat up a gay teenager and threw him over a bridge and killed him. King was appalled and worked it into the novel. They still commemorate the kid in Bangor to this day.

    I thought the new Pennywise nailed the whole aspect of IT being an animal pretending to be a clown. Specifically in the Georgie scene when he suddenly starts drooling, like the mask briefly falls off because he’s so hungry. Perfect

    • @miriamweller812
      @miriamweller812 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course what's the point of the whole Clown thing when it's so freaking creepy? Pointless.
      But better not start with how any of that would make sense.
      Why isn't it eating those kids as all the others and instead scares them over and over again to the point, that they realize, that this is its main power?
      Of course in the book there is some talk about some magical turtle god or whatever giving protection, but why then go for these kids and not just all the others it obviously can easily eat?
      The TV series IT just felt quite a lot smarter. This one is scarier, sure, but also incredible dumb.

    • @edwardpolenzani1039
      @edwardpolenzani1039 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@miriamweller812 Don't they explain in more detail in the book that IT enjoys scarring his victims because it makes them taste better? Like playing with his food/seasoning the meat or something like that? It was briefly touched on in this movie but I believe the book goes into more detail.
      As to why doesn't IT just eat the main kids as quickly as Georgie...I always just kinda assume he ate Georgie quickly because he just woke up from his long sleep cycle and was extra hungry. They don't say that in the movie and that's a fair point to criticize, but it's a good enough rationale for me as I watch it.

      Agree. And I like Jessica Chastain here over Amy Adams. Sure the looks aren't quite as close as they would be with Adams, but I think Chastain can hit the darker tones with her performance better than Adams. I mean I liked Adams in Arrival, so its not like she's incapable of heavier roles. But even in that, I don't think she hits the same emotional colors that Chastain can hit with her performances. And I'll take that over the more exact appearance matching any day.
      But on that note, the casting for Eddie was 100% perfect. Whatever that kid actually grows up to be like just isn't going to feel or look right if he doesn't turn out exactly like James Ransone. The appearance is uncanny and their attitudes and performance even match up perfectly.

Maybe modern filmmakers somehow are afraid to fall into the sentimentality or something. So they cannot get too close. But the ones from the original really felt like long lost friends. But I noticed that these actors in real life were real great loveable people like Anette O'Toole, John Ritter, Richard Thomas, etc...whereas Jessica Chastain is someone rather cold in real life.

    I would recommend reading the book. Naturally it goes into more detail than the movie or Miniseries could show, but you learn more about the loser’s relationship, more about the town folks and their encounters with IT (not all the adults are under it’s influence) and the gruesome deaths of IT’s victims.
    One of my personal favourite aspects of the book is the feud between Butch Bower’s (Henry’s father) and William Hanlon (Mike’s father).

      Yes, the book’s massively detailed histories of the town, the relationship between Mike and his dad were great. That’s one change I didn’t like in the movies, where they just killed off his parents in a fire. Mike, because he stayed in Derry after everyone else left, got so much information than what was presented onscreen, Will was a very interesting side character who had to deal with the Blackfire and the KKK and he even saw IT.

      Was that RPG game stuff with "find our magical items", that dragged it so much.
      It also made IT look even more stupid, because what's with all the scare stuff?
      In the series it felt more like IT was playing with them, but since the movie is solely focussing on making it look disgusting and scary, this doesn't work.
      HISHE made a fine joke in one of their 'evil bar" episodes, where all the loser antagonists sit around, Palpatin being the bartender.
      He tells IT, that it mistake was to repeat the same scare tactic over and over again, giving an example by scaring some other antagonist one time, what works, then a second time, what per se also works, but the guy then starts to trash around and attack.
      It's overall the biggest problem with IT. The idea to have some psycho demon thing, that eats fear is fine, but what's the point of IT not eating those kids? If they are protected somehow, why go after them and not just ignore them? Obviously all other people are not protected and without it going after that group, they wouldn't have done anything.

    an often overlooked part is that the ritual did actually work but not when the losers first tried it, this was because one of them didn't burn the right token. Their "dirty little secret" Pennywise taunted them about was them being gay and the fear they would be rejected by the others if they found out. Yet after the mortal wounding of the one they had a crush on when they were young and a heartfelt confession to which they and the rest the group all reconfirmed their friendships for each other the final token was sacrificed and the ritual started to weaken Pennywise straight away.

    In the book, it's explained that the reason each member of The Losers Club was "chosen" was because they were each uniquely creative. Ben was a talented architect/engineer. He was the one who designed the dam that they used to flood The Barrens, he designed their clubhouse, and (in the book) he figured out how to make silver shot for their slingshot. Bill was always good at writing stories and in every version grew up to become a famous novelist. Beverly was a talented artist and seamstress, and grew up to become a successful fashion designer. Richie loved making funny voices, and (in the novel) became a radio DJ known for making funny voices with a wide variety of characters (obviously the two movie versions were just successful stand up comics). Eddy's belief in his own poor health caused him to actually experience the illnesses he believed he had. I think Stan was chosen because of his devotion to his faith (with most day to day stuff he only believed in science, but he was devout in his Jewish faith). The only one who wasn't super creative was Mike, but I think he was chosen because his family had a personal connection to Pennywise (which is revealed in his research into Derry's history).
    The reason why this was so important in defeating Pennywise was belief and creativity were essential in performing The Ritual Of Chud. The Ritual Of Chud works very differently in the book than in the 2019 movie. Originally it required someone to bite It's tongue while repeating a riddle or a joke. This was why the poem "He hits his fists against the post, but still insists he sees the ghost" was important in the book. That, as well as Richie's jokes, was how they managed to beat It in the end.
    What the 1990 version got right was the depiction of the kids. They all played the same role in the movie that they did in the book. The 2017 movie gave Mike's role as historian to Ben, while at the same time maintaining Ben's role as architect/engineer. So Mike ended up being included in the movie more out of obligation to the source material than to any narrative reasons. He became Velma on Scooby Doo after the introduction of Scrappy.
    Also, the time difference between book and film in the 1990 version wasn't as crazy as it was in the 2017 version. In the book the events when they were kids took place in 1957, and then It returned in 1984 (the year the book came out, 27 years later). In the miniseries it was changed to 1960 when they were kids, and 1990 (the year of the miniseries broadcast, 30 years later) when they were adults. So a lot of the period sets from the past wasn't too different from the book. However with the kids part in the 2017 movie taking part in the 1980's, I think that the movie lost a lot of the heart of the original because they had to spend so much time saying "Hey look, it's the 80's! See all this 80's stuff? Have we mentioned it's the 80's yet? Did you know it's the 80's? It's the 80's!"
    If I were Dominic Noble analysing these movies for Lost In Adaptation, I would say that the 2017 and 2019 movies were better MADE on a technical level, but the 1990 miniseries was the better adaptation of the source material.
    For a really good discussion on the differences between the 2017 IT Chapter 1 and the 1990 miniseries (mostly on who was the better Pennywise) I suggest watching The Nostalgia Critic's review of the 2017 movie, titled "Almost Got IT" (a tribute to the Batman: TAS episode "Almost Got 'im"). It's very entertaining and he makes some excellent points on both versions. Here's the link.

    The ritual is form the book. IT is a Todash monster from outside our reality that has been around since the dinosaurs. The Dark Tower keeps most of them at bay.

    What happened to Adrian Mellon at the start was bad, but they way it went down in the book was so much worse. Reading about the way the people were so much scarier than the monster as they beat him to death. 😣
    IT still ate him, but was hardly shown, only briefly described in the background.

    Great reaction. The ritual is in the book and there are lots of weird concepts, like a floating cosmic turtle (named Maturin)..... it is like IT'S antithesis/opposite. Admittedly it is very hard to portray what is written in the book into any type of series of images that would make sense on the screen. There are subtly nods here and there to it though..... for instance, there are some images of ceramic turtles on a coffee/end table, some pictures scattered throughout the movies and I think some kind of toy in the thrift shop where Stephen King is. The book is an altogether different animal. Because of how TH-cam censors things there is an entire scene in the book that occurs when the Losers Club are kids that is completely omitted in the movies. Honestly, they really couldn't have shot it how it was written or pretty much everyone would've gone to jail. If you know, then you know. The book is a masterpiece, but a fucked up masterpiece and it makes me wonder just what, and how many drugs King was on when he wrote it. Still is a scary book (and the movies are as well). There is a rumor of a "supercut" type of Director's Cut of chapter 1 and chapter 2 with lots of extra stuff, but it is supposed to be similar to the 2 part VHS miniseries in runtime and be closer to 6 hours. I've held off on buying Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 on 4k because I don't like the double-dipping that these asshole studios do with re-releases of variations of movies over and over again. I had thought that there was supposed to be a prequel movie in pre-production exploring the origins of the creature (IT) but it was right when COVID really started hitting and haven't heard anything since. Anyhoo.... just some answers to a few questions you guys had about the book compared to the movie(s)/miniseries. I always recommend books, but I've loved to read since grades school. This book.... IT.... is similar to the size of a phone book though, so that's a heads up if you are considering that, but I guess it really isn't in the age of downloadable everything, but it's a hefty read nonetheless.

      Humans fear the dark because of what might be in it, but we also use the environment to prey upon other things, to the point where no state permits hunting game animals at night.
