    "is he talking about us?
    Nope"
    actually, he was.
the old gods they mention and that we see at the end are indeed the consumers that buy and watch movies and if the movie isn't good and we are not satisfied, then the world that the movie has created gets left behind, which is essentially the end of that world.

19:35 actually, yes he is talking about you both and everyone who watches films. This movie is so great on so many levels. As a surface narrative, it's fun and horrifying at the same time, but in a deeper understanding it is very thought out and explains so many tropes found in most horror movies.

Ive read a very interesting comment under another reaction video about this movie, by "Grumpy Old Guy Plays Games"
"One of the reasons I love this film is that its all about hubris. The controllers have done this so many times that they no longer are as careful or precise about the sacrifices as they might have once been. They're supposed to gather up and sacrifice a bunch of young people who fit certain archetypes (the Virgin, the Whore, the Athlete, the Scholar, and the Fool). The problem is, they get the archetypes wrong. They've assigned the roles to Dana (Virgin), Jules (Whore), Curt (Athlete), Holden (Scholar), and Marty (Fool), when none of them actually fit those roles. Dana might seem virginal, but early in the movie she confesses to an affair with her professor. Jules is sexy and dresses skimpy, but she's also flighty and overly concerned with non-important things in her life; also she is in a clearly loving and utterly monogamous relationship with Curt, which hardly fits the whore archetype. Curt might seem like a jock, but his athletic skills are mediocre at best, and he's seen lugging around high-level textbooks dealing with subjects like the Psychology of the Soviet System. Holden is smart, sure, but at the same time he's clearly more athletic than Curt is, and while he has the raw intelligence, he's clearly lazy about it. And Marty... well, Marty might be a stoner but he also admits he's never had sex in his life. So...
Had the controllers done the research, they would have realized that the archetypes should have been assigned with Dana being the Whore, Jules being the Fool, Curt being the Scholar, Holden being the Athlete, and Marty being the Virgin."

    • @migmit

It's really stupid when people try to rearrange the sacrifices to make them fit. Exactly as stupid as the controllers doing it as they did. In reality, ALL of them are pretty smart, and all of the guys are well-developed athletically. Dana might have a bad relationship, but she is more reserved than a whore archetype. Marty might be technically a virgin, but he doesn't fit a virgin archetype either. The point is: the controllers were trying to tell the same story again and again, but they really chose the sacrifices badly. Not just which one to assign each role; the whole group should not be made to play the game - or (speaking from controllers' perspective) it would be better to change the game entirely.

my question is why does it have to be these people. Anyone can fit those roles.
I also think the "underground team" was too lax, as all they had to do is get the teens there, and kill them. Why do they have so many killer entities, and why do they allow the teens to "pick" their killer? I would have rather send 2 killers in, and bet on which one gets the most kills.

Some say that the Whedonverse goes:
    1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer - in which we learn about the Slayers, Watchers, and Institute.
    2. Cabin in the Woods - where the Institute fails to contain the Ancient Ones.
    3. Firefly - where the Watchers attempt to bring back the Slayers.
Also, unicorns are no joke - they'll murder non-virgins.

I saw that theory too some time back, where the Ancient Ones are rampaging on Earth and caused the humans to escape into space and colonize, and the remnants of the Watchers are trying to find a way to create artificial Slayers to retake Earth.
      It's not a bad theory.

The basic plot is kind of the opposite of a C'tulhu plot. In the Lovecraft stories, you'll have a cult that is trying to summon the "Elder Gods." In this movie, you have a group of people that perform the ritual in order to keep the gods at bay.

Favorite part of this was when they reference the incident in the 90's where America failed. This is a reference to The Faculty who had all the architype for each character. But no one died and they fought off the monsters with homemade drugs . All and all, I found this movie to be fun.

Best monster... the Unicorn, why? For once they did a lore accurate one in media... Unicorns were never originally portrayed as friendly creatures, just like all fae like creatures they were the sort of thing you didn't want to have anything to do with if you ran into one.
One of those old myths that got twisted and sanitized over the centuries. Like fairies, going from beings who'd toy and play with humans for twisted enjoyment or just because they could, or forging often detrimental bargains for boons on desperate people... to small pretty winged benign things that granted wishes etc

It's quite simple when you think about it. In this movie us as the veiwers are the Anciant Ones because we demand blood and violence when it comes to horror movies and when we don't get that the people rise up and get angry. The different catagories are basically what one expects in a horror movie and yes the vigin's death is optinal because that's how most horror movies work. They failed to have what the veiwers wanted and thus in the end the Ancint Ones rose up.
Also I think it's also talking about sociaty and the fact that death and violence has always been something that mankind has craved to see and they are showing that in a way that is saying it's not a good thing that things are that way and we need to change some how.
Apparently the only way they could get Segorney to agree to act there was have a werewolf in the movie she was so excited to see it and took pictures on set with the actor that was in the suit.

Buffy and Angel dealing with the monsters - even the Ancient Gods - then this movie explaining how Firefly's 'Earth-That-Was' got "Used Up". Some survivors escaped and found a new solar system to settle.

IIRC, Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard wanted to do something together so they locked themselves in a hotel room for a weekend and hammered out the script together. Joss was going to direct it but was busy with other projects and they decided Drew should be the director, his first directing credit.
there are some fan theories that fit this movie into the "Whedonverse" (theories that all of his works are connected). this is how the apocalypse starts from the show Angel and is the reason that "The Earth that was" is destroyed from Firefly.

I don't even like Hellraiser but I really like sawblade head, like he's just such a good design. Also is it just me or does he have surprisingly kind eyes when Dana's freaking out against the glass? I dunno, he just gives me good vibes, like a "you don't screw with my puzzle sphere and I'm not that bad of a guy."
I really like the ending of this, how they choose to let the world end. Though it's a comparatively "selfish" decision I get it tbh.

Which monster was my favorite? Man, I can't say but I will list my top five in no particular order:
1: The Zombie Tank: It's from a video game called left for dead. You can see it ripping a guard in half during the free for all.
2: Kevin: Kevin was a serial killer from the movie Sin City, you can see him in one of the elevators early in the film
3: Angry Molesting Tree: This monster was inspired by Harry Potter's Whomping willow. You can see it explode a guy when the teens let all the monsters out.
4: The Sugarplum Fairy: The ballerina with a face full of teeth. The wife said it reminded her of IT.
5: The Witch : Also from the video game Left for Dead. If she sees you she chases you indefinitely. You can see her ripping a guard's face off during the big fight.

The customers is actually very much us, that was the intended implication. We are the ancient ones demanding horror movies cater to our every whims or we will tear it a new one if it doesn't have enough gore, not enough TnA, etc. In the end, the operation failed because they mixed up Marty and Dana's role. Marty is the virgin survivor who figures everything out and who's against taking the wrong actions, like a proper protagonist. Dana is the fool. She literally did every mistake and made every wrong decision (it's easier to catch on a 2nd viewing), as well as not being a virgin... This deviation from the norm is unacceptable! Lets rage about it online for hours on end, like true keyboard warriors!
PS: Ironically - but not really - some of the best horror movies from the last 20 years often widely deviate from the usual tired tropes, or completely reverse expectations (like this very movie does). This goes to show, sometimes, people just don't know what's best, even when they think they do.

this movie has layers in it. when it was released, people are so confused on what is this so this movie wasn't really received that well until years later when people rewatched the movie and see the meaning behind it. even the supposed to be "villains" aren't really because they are the ones keeping the end of the world in check.

    • @separator94
      @separator94 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It was universally acclaimed and has an average review score of 92% on rotten tomatoes (making it one of the most highly acclaimed horror films of the last 10 years). It was also a box office success making back more than double its budget in ticket sales. It's dvd/blu-ray sales also hit #1, over all other movies, when they came out.

    • @farlonmuentes6004
      @farlonmuentes6004 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@separator94 it's opening week made $14 million with a budget of $30 million. the user scores aren't only from the year it was released that's why i said "until years later when people rewatched it". i remember this movie having no audience when it was shown to theaters in my area and just by google search, it only made double from its budget which is not good for any film. making "double" on any film is never good nor it's considered a success. different factors take cuts from the money that the movie made.

As a matter of fact, they are talking about us. See, the Ancient Ones, as a super secret crazy twist, are supposed to be us, the audience, watching the film. Think about it.
    - Every year, we come to the theater to watch a bunch of teenagers having sex and get murdered by a random monster, just like how every year there is a ritual sacrifice to satisfy the "customers."
    - The orginization running this whole thing, or in comparison the Hollywood suits, shell out the exact same thing to satisfy us and make money out of it.
    - We get upset when a character dies off screen because we know they are still alive, much like how the Ancient Ones shook the very earth during Marty's supposed death.
    - When they said as the world was about to end, "it's time to give someone else a chance" and "maybe it is time for a change" they were referring to the horror genre as a whole. New, inventive horror movies need to be given a chance to shine, like the Babadook or The Lighthouse, while giving a rest to creating or rebooting the same cliche slasher films.

I have to say I pretty much had the same reaction to the elevator scene. It is such an instant slaughter that's it's hard not to laugh at it. I don't think I've ever seen anybody get rocked that hard that fast.
