    I love how this movie breaks convention and portrays the survivors as more than thin caricatures which is ultimately the downfall of the cult/foundation. The Fool is capable and quick on his feet, the Jock is compassionate and cares about others, the Virgin just isn't one etc

    "We aren't the only ones watching." The one way mirror scene thematically calls out the inherent voyeurism of any movie audience. The ancient ones are the fans of classic horror movies. If they aren't appeased by the ritual, i.e. following the standard formula, then they stop going to those kind of movies, and thus that genre is destroyed, in other words, its world ends.

    Some say that the Whedonverse goes:
    1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer - in which we learn about the Slayers, Watchers, and Institute.
    2. Cabin in the Woods - where the Institute fails to contain the Ancient Ones.
    3. Firefly - where the Watchers attempt to bring back the Slayers.
    Also, unicorns are no joke - they'll murder non-virgins.

    Ive read a very interesting comment under another reaction video about this movie, by "Grumpy Old Guy Plays Games"
    "One of the reasons I love this film is that its all about hubris. The controllers have done this so many times that they no longer are as careful or precise about the sacrifices as they might have once been. They're supposed to gather up and sacrifice a bunch of young people who fit certain archetypes (the Virgin, the Whore, the Athlete, the Scholar, and the Fool). The problem is, they get the archetypes wrong. They've assigned the roles to Dana (Virgin), Jules (Whore), Curt (Athlete), Holden (Scholar), and Marty (Fool), when none of them actually fit those roles. Dana might seem virginal, but early in the movie she confesses to an affair with her professor. Jules is sexy and dresses skimpy, but she's also flighty and overly concerned with non-important things in her life; also she is in a clearly loving and utterly monogamous relationship with Curt, which hardly fits the whore archetype. Curt might seem like a jock, but his athletic skills are mediocre at best, and he's seen lugging around high-level textbooks dealing with subjects like the Psychology of the Soviet System. Holden is smart, sure, but at the same time he's clearly more athletic than Curt is, and while he has the raw intelligence, he's clearly lazy about it. And Marty... well, Marty might be a stoner but he also admits he's never had sex in his life. So...
    Had the controllers done the research, they would have realized that the archetypes should have been assigned with Dana being the Whore, Jules being the Fool, Curt being the Scholar, Holden being the Athlete, and Marty being the Virgin."

    • @migmit
      @migmit 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's really stupid when people try to rearrange the sacrifices to make them fit. Exactly as stupid as the controllers doing it as they did. In reality, ALL of them are pretty smart, and all of the guys are well-developed athletically. Dana might have a bad relationship, but she is more reserved than a whore archetype. Marty might be technically a virgin, but he doesn't fit a virgin archetype either. The point is: the controllers were trying to tell the same story again and again, but they really chose the sacrifices badly. Not just which one to assign each role; the whole group should not be made to play the game - or (speaking from controllers' perspective) it would be better to change the game entirely.

      my question is why does it have to be these people. Anyone can fit those roles.
      I also think the "underground team" was too lax, as all they had to do is get the teens there, and kill them. Why do they have so many killer entities, and why do they allow the teens to "pick" their killer? I would have rather send 2 killers in, and bet on which one gets the most kills.

    The unicorn in this movie is actually the most mythologically accurate portrayal of a unicorn in modern media.
    Unicorns were frothing, carnivorous psycho monsters that stalked, killed, and ATE people.
    The only reason they are associated with innocence is because a pure and innocent maiden would have the opposite effect, their rage would be calmed and they would lay their head in the maiden's lap, allowing people a quick and easy shot at killing the rampaging magical murderhorse.

    They are 100% implying the Scooby Gang.
    Joss Whedon, who wrote/produced Cabin in the Woods, also created Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the film and the TV series).
    Drew Goddard, director of Cabin in the Woods, was a staff writer on the final season of Buffy.
    In the show, they often referred to Buffy and her friends as the Scooby Gang. So it's a reference to the cartoon and a reference to a horror series that also co-opted the Scooby name, to add to a film that is referencing a ton of other horror franchises.

    I've watched it every Halloween, since it came out, and notice new things every single time. There's just so much attention to detail which makes for some seriously high re-watchability. Not to mention the fact that it's perfectly paced and stays entertaining from start to finish. There's literally never a lull. The production values are also much higher than most horror movies, which is nice to see considering the genre is well know for having a lot of low budget productions.

There are some neat fan theories about this movie such as the "gods" being the fans that demand the horror movie tropes, a possible reference to a failed attempt being the teens from the movie The Faculty, and that they messed up by switching the "idiot" and "virgin" because Marty is definitely the smart one while our final girl is a hot mess who slept with her professor 😉

    • @kennethbryant5819
      @kennethbryant5819 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The blonde and the athlete didn't fit their stereotypes either. Kurt couldn't even throw a short pass and was in a committed, adorkable relationship with the supposed "whore" Jules. The geek made a decent catch in the street and is actually in school on an athletic scholarship.

    • @Kaylakaze
      @Kaylakaze 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yeah, a lot of people don't catch (or at least don't mention) that Marty is the virgin while the girl is the fool, so the sacrifice would have gone bad anyway.

      I’m torn between thinking the Gods are either stubborn old fashioned horror fans or movie studios that like to keep things “safe” and in line with what works financially or young filmmakers who are ready to pop up and make things different after so much cliche for so many years. I like how it’s sort of up to interpretation beyond the text of the film

      @@Kaylakaze According to “The Director” (Sigourney Weavers Character) they didn’t need to be exact matches, just looked the part. This was demonstrated by the fact that none of them really fit their archetypes until they started being gassed

    • @AnnekeOosterink
      @AnnekeOosterink 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, if I remember correctly, Kurt should have been the scholar too, not the athlete, they were so busy with trying to type cast them, they completely ignored their actual characters. Or really, humans are complex beings and don't really fit in any kind of archetype (unless you choose to ignore the complexity of people and just focus on the one characteristic) and trying to make them fit only results in people not being who you think they are. :)

    I always saw the film as an allegory of the movie industry. The ancients are us, the audience, who always must be pleased, the technicians are the film makers who have to answer to Sigourney Weaver - the Producers. The teens are the sacrifices that must be made to keep us happy. If the audience isn't happy, then all hell breaks loose

    Fun Fact:
    Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford are the two "suits" introduced in the opening.
    1) Jenkins appeared in 'Sea of Love' as Al Pacino's fellow detective (Gruber) who lands with Pacino's ex-wife.
    2) Whitford appeared in 'Scent of a Woman' as Al Pacino's nephew (Randy).
    Whose wife Pacino called by the wrong name.
    Both men were assaulted by Al in their respective roles.
    "If you'll be my bodyguard...I can be your long lost pal."
    Pacino to Chris O'Donnell??

    It's quite simple when you think about it. In this movie us as the veiwers are the Anciant Ones because we demand blood and violence when it comes to horror movies and when we don't get that the people rise up and get angry. The different catagories are basically what one expects in a horror movie and yes the vigin's death is optinal because that's how most horror movies work. They failed to have what the veiwers wanted and thus in the end the Ancint Ones rose up.
    Also I think it's also talking about sociaty and the fact that death and violence has always been something that mankind has craved to see and they are showing that in a way that is saying it's not a good thing that things are that way and we need to change some how.
    Apparently the only way they could get Segorney to agree to act there was have a werewolf in the movie she was so excited to see it and took pictures on set with the actor that was in the suit.

    I loved how this movie is a parody of slasher films. And it pokes fun at the genre. The Ancient Ones are in reference to the audience. Favorite part of this was when they reference the incident in the 90's where America failed. This is a reference to The Faculty who had all the architype for each character. But no one died and they fought off the monsters with homemade drugs . All and all, I found this movie to be fun.
