  • Charging at home is perhaps the most convenient part of owning an electric vehicle, but unfortunately, I can’t do that.
You see I’m currently renting an apartment, as I’ve done since graduating school, and there are no charging options available here. I did recently change complexes and did have the option to rent a garage, but unfortunately there aren’t even outlets in those garages to trickle charge my car.
If you’re watching this you may be in a similar living situation to myself, so I wanted to share my experience owning an EV without home charging, along with some options for you if you don't have the ability to charge at home.

We just downsized from a house where we had 240 outlet. The condo was built in the 60s, and has a few very wimpy 110s in the garage. My bolt can charge off of it, but the Tesla refuses. The condo association said I could charge, but there are some residents who resent it. There are now two other electric cars in the complex, and we are formed a task to try to figure out what to do. The first thing we did was send out a survey and we learned that there are 15 other people who are thinking their next car will be EV! That really helped the condo board see the writing on the wall. At the moment we are thinking of either installing two pay as you go fast chargers, or giving everyone the option of their own meter with a nema 14-50 in their own designated parking space. I also researched a Beam solar car port for the outdoor parking lot, but we’re in a cloudy northern city, so that’s not a very viable solution.

Wow, so many potential new owners! I don't think many property owners are aware how big these are gonna be in the next decade. They'll need to get updated or fall behind and risk losing tenants. Best of luck to you!

I also downsized from a house with a 240V charging port in the garage to a condominium. My condo board allowed me to install a NEMA 14-50 receptacle with a separate meter very close to electricity at our club house. My total cost for all equipment was under $100. Many of the charger companies now offer equipment that support multiple user accounts so several EV owners can share a charger, each funding electricity used.

Thank you for your video and your information. I do own a EV vehicle which is a Chevy Volt unfortunately I don't get the range like Tesla's EV and I just new position at my work which I have to travel 35 miles from my home so it gets very tricky on finding stations. I just discovered chargepoint and how cheap it is but the problem is when I get a full charge the charge point Station will charge you a parking fee which is extremely high like $10 an hour so I really have to watch my levels just before I get a full charge I disconnect. I noticed when I charge 1 to 2 hours to 3 hours it's only like a dollar an hour which is extremely cheap so my average charge price is about two to three dollars for a 2 to 3 hour charge. I have a feature on my car where the generator can give almost a 50% charge when I'm driving so when I get to the station I just need half of a charge which is about 2 to 3 hour charge to get a full charge. The charge stations I use now are Volta which is all free but they give you a 2 hour or 3 hour limit depending upon where it's located. If the Volta is at a nearby theater they'll give you around 3 hours but if it's at a grocery store they will give you only 2 hours. The great thing about a grocery store is they will have multiple stations so I can hop from one station to the next if I need more than 2 hours

I'm getting my model 3 in just over a month. I live in an apartment also...however, in my case, there are some 110V outlets on the side of the building. There is a parking spot where I can just run an extention cord across the grass (and it wouldn't be noticeable). I am trying to get a garage by the time I get the car also, which would give me access to 110V outlets. I don't drive enough to absolutely need a level 2 charger at home so that should be sufficient for the time being. I normally walk to work (right across the street) and unless I am making a special trip somewhere, only drive around 10 miles/week. If I REALLY get stuck, there is a supercharger in the supermarket parking lot right behind my apartment, and my work across the street has a level 2 charger.

I'm in a very similar position to you. I'd not rent, but I do own a Condo. No garage or assigned parking space. All outdoor parking. Development was built in 1973, so very poor power infrastructure.
Already approached condo board with 10page business proposal and 50pg professional feasibility study. Told them all about market growth, state incentives, etc. They're not budging, sent me a C&D letter to shut me up. Typical NIMBY attitudes.
Extension cord from my unit won't work. Parking area is 250ft away. Way too much of a trip and possibly fire hazard.
Nearest L2 charging station is 4 miles away (and $0.27/kwh). Not exactly a short walk home. Tried biking it, but even that was a tricky ride down some busy roads.
Nearest DCFC is many towns away, so no dice there. I have a PHEV anyway, so wouldn't be able to use it regardless.
The office building I work at has "6 Electric car charging stations coming soon" listed on the leasing company website, but it's said that for over a year now with no mention of construction start. My office is 35mi from my home and I'm currently 100%WFH, so not something I'd want to do on a regular basis.
I've even gone so far as to try and figure out if I can get some kind of solar setup to trickle charger my car.
I am involved with a local EV advocacy group, so I'm hoping they can help me get some traction.
    Possible future options:
    1. New Medical park directly adjacent to my condo complex. Might as my advocacy group to reach out to the leasing company and send info about EV charging incentives.
    2. Maybe get a lawyer to force my condo boards hand. There is a new law in my state that is supposed to help, but I'm not sure if it applies to my situation. NYS RPP 339-LL. Finding an EV-Friendly lawyer is tricky. Also don't want to start making enemies at the condo board and see my maintenance requests mysteriously disappear.
    3. Maybe pick up an ebike or scooter to bring with me to nearby L2 station.
    4. Unsustainable, but I suppose I could ask residents with units closer to the parking area if I could plug into their unit (and pay for whatever power I use of course). Still a sidewalk trip hazard, so not a great idea.
    5. There is a 110V outlet near the clubhouse. Would need to convince the board to let me use it, somehow meter the use and pay them for the electricity. Not exactly on their good side right now.
MUD charging is a huge barrier and there are still a lot of people who this will affect until laws are changed. Not everyone can afford a single family home with a garage.

About 2 years ago, my apartment building installed 8 ChargePoint chargers and now are adding 10 more. Cost to use the charger is only $20/mo. This makes me feel better there are a bunch of super chargers near me. I have a garage it has a charge port for the level one. It’s good enough for me to leave my car charged up when I’m gone for a week or so being in the military. I’m okay with just driving to a supercharger most of the time to charge my car up within 15 mins to 30 mins. It will still be way cheaper then putting gas in my car. I have have an Audi A5 right now and I have to put 150 a week in gas because I drive about 60 miles round trip Monday through Friday. I’m getting a Tesla lol the most I have seen people pay was $11.00 to charge up at a supercharger that’s way cheaper than me pay 65 every time I’m out of gas. I don’t plan on staying in an apartment for ever so like I said I won’t mind.

Luckily there is a supercharger just 1 mile (4 min drive) away and a destination charger 2 miles (6 min drive) from me. Sometimes to get a free charge I drive to the nature preserve where the destination charger is located and ride my electric one wheel (they fit perfectly in the frunk) the two miles back home. I can leave it there for the night and have a full charge for free. Or I go to the grocery store and supercharger as I shop (maybe twice a week). I also bartend on Saturday nights and so every weekend I plug in downtown at the college for a slow charge as I work till 3 am. All in all pretty convenient even without home charging or charging at work. Still. I don’t think anyone who is the lazy type would revel in the ownership experience of a Tesla if they couldn’t charge in their garage.

I live in a condo I own but I don’t have home charging. I own a 2021 Tesla model 3 bought earlier this year. Initially, I charge 1-2 times weekly at supercharger station 12km from my home. I charge when I am left with 40-60km of range and charge up to 90% full. Recently, I keep getting a pop up message saying that frequently charging to what require for my daily use will shorten the life of the battery. I spoke with a Tesla maintenance guy in Toronto about this and he said Tesla cars are not made for regular supercharging. The super chargers are meant for road trips only and the cars have to be charged at home. I told him about a warning from a Toyota sales executive prior to buying the Tesla when he told me that condo residents cannot buy Tesla. I shrugged off that warning because I was sure Tesla would not release a car that writes off people living in condos. So when I found out about this truth that Tesla batteries cannot be supercharged regularly, I was shocked. My first decision was to sell the car and buy the Prius Hybrid. I am still considering this option and really feel that it’s the right thing to do. What company is so stupid as to sell a car that cannot be regularly charged at its own supercharger. I asked the Tesla maintenance guy if this means condo residents cannot buy Teslas and his response was “It’s your call”. Now, I have very bad impression of not just Tesla batteries but also their after sale maintenance support personnel. Back to the charging problem, the car actually suggests a solution, it prompts me to charge to my daily limit, which means, charge less. 90% is too high. So now, I charge up to 70% full and I am considering lowering that to 50%. I am retired, I don’t have work place charger but I also don’t drive frequently although I drive long distances when I do. So, charging to less than capacity is not a problem. I am also considering installing a charger in my underground garage but is troublesome and expensive because it involves the condo management board approval. I might sell the condo in the near future and makes installing a level 2 charger not worth the cost and trouble.

Hey, I am in Hamilton and have been thinking about an EV when my car dies (which will be any day now haha though COVID prolonged her life) and Canada passed that condo boards cannot stop you but most garages are not equipped with electrical to handle EV charging. I was told by my property manager that I'd need a structural engineer and electrical engineer to come in and figure out how to add an electric line and if the transformer would be able to handle it, etc. We are talking $20k+. Would love to know what you ended up doing. Thank you for sharing that note about Tesla as I had no idea and probably would have done the same thing. If things ever go back to where they were before COVID for my field, it would mean I'd be averaging 150-250km of driving 4-5 days/week. Currently I'm almost exclusively at home.

That's simply not true. EVs have a higher upfront environmental impact, but that levels off very quickly. And it is only going to lessen as our grid transitions to more renewable sources. In an ICE car, you not only have the production of the car, but also the production of oil, transportation of oil, and finally the burning of oil to move the car around.

Let's talk about the unappealing parts of owning an electric car that he did not mention. Walking to and from your electric car when it is raining and snowing. Having to drive you car to the electric charging station, then having to drive it again near your apartment complex. Having other EV owners camp out at the charging station from 5:30 PM ~ 7 AM because they don't give a $HIT about other people. Having people unplug your EV car as a prank. Trying to recharge a car in winter is an uphill struggle. Yes, I know he is pushing the " Yea, it is not a big deal " montra. Yes, it is a big deal if you live in an Apartment or Condo and you need to camp out at charging stations or factor that into your daily routine. A gas powered car only takes 2 minutes to refill and you can ignore your car for 2 weeks. Until electric cars are easier to use it will not adapted by the masses.

I love Elon, and want an EV, but this confirms my fears. Haha. I feel like this is the early adopters syndrome, and in the future all this will be moot. I may wait for that day.

If someone on this planet can't figure out how to charge an electric car comparable to filling up at a gas station, electric cars are a waste. The human race needs to find something better. Cars cost alot already and we dedicate time working to pay for them. Now we have to dedicate time figuring out how to keep them charged. We need more options. Wish I was a genius and could come up with a better idea but than electric cars. HYDROGEN would be a better option but in the wrong hands disastrous.

But there are almost no hydrogen stations.... at least most places have electrcicity.
