Hey there Kevin, I agree I also usually drive in similar setup and I never go auto as it is painful in that mode. This gearbox tuning was meant to be a sequential manual first and foremost and they threw in the auto to pick up a broader market and clientele.
Perfect advice. Once you active M mode, DEFINITELY do not want to turn off DSC for daily driving. But for a quick “demonstration run”, DSC off and 6th Gearbox mode enabled ( in a straight line) is the way 👍🏻
I bet parking especially on a gradient is a major headache though with no clutch control. I wish they had just made a manual version with this with a clutch.
I drive D, level 3, DSC off, Power button lite, all the time. Michelin Pilot Sports no issues. I only use DSC when it raining, and even then I rarely see the DSC light flickering, even in Power mode, which I pretty use all the time.

I just brought my m5 e60 a month ago and I’m learning about it little by little Lear a lot watching your vids thanks... so this car is better to be driven in manual mode so that it can cause less damage to the smg? When driving in manual and let’s say I’m in 3rd gear can I drop it into neutral like a regular manual transmission to hit the brakes and slow down instead of downshifting? If not what the best way to downshift when your approaching a red light or would it downshift on its own?? And this is something that I don’t seem to understand what’s the proper warm up procedure b4 you can start revving the car or pushing the car to its limits? Is it when the oil level is at half?
Also these transmissions learn your driving style and adapts to it. strongly recommend reset the gearbox adaptations when you have bought the car, becouse its very hard to un learn the previous owner. make sure you have the latest SMG3 update, D shouldnt be jerky at all, atleast they dont in Europe.
Might be a strange question but I'm a bit confused since it's not a "normal" automatic transmission - do you ever have to worry about things like stalling, or rolling back on hill starts? Also do you have to let off the throttle when shifting up / down? Or does it manage the throttle for you?
Little known fact: major maintenence item at 60k to 80k miles is the 12V MOTOR that drives the pump. Remove motor, disassemble, clean brake dust with Brake Clean. Inspect commutator and all bearings and bushings. Reassemble and reinstall. If need be, it can be rebuilt by several outfits in the United States. Just send yours in as a core, and if you get a rebuilt motor in return. In Fort Lauderdale, we have an outstanding place called Lauderdale Battery that could rebuild one on site. My motor just needed to be cleaned and reinstalled. It was severely clogged with dust from the bushes, but the brush length and all other components were still okay.
So manual 5 mode puts the least wear on the clutch just as I thought. But do you drive in manual mode too when you drive in the city or there's a traffic jam? And how do you downshift when you come to a stop light for example or you come to a full stop - do you downshift till you reach the second gear and then you just break and shift to first gear when standing still or do you fully downshift to first gear. The latter isn't as good for the transmission I think.
Philipp K I drive mine in manual mode all the time. It’s just smoother. Honestly, I drive with 3 bars. I, for some reason thought driving with 5 bars kills the clutch sooner. Lolol
Its harder on the clutch with 5 bars if you are driving really hard such as full throttle and higher revs due to the driveline shock on every shift. If you are driving moderately to spirited where it does not hammer the system, then this will allow longer life since there is less slippage to the disc when engaging. It generally boils down to to your drive style. BTW, I always drive in manual, city driving included.
Faster shifts actually wear out the clutch faster, only shift into 1st if fully stopped , the SMG is a manual transmission you will wear out the teeth on the gear box, treat it just like a normal manual
@@floridaheat305 After reading most of the Q&A on this thread, I'm not sure anyone of you should be allowed to drive a vehicle. Never mind a Sedan capable of going far North of 300 km/hr
