Good to see this video. The SMGs get hammered all over the internet, and I've always had the suspicion that its because people son't know how to drive them properly and try to drive them like a regular automatic. Nice to see someone who gets it.
Good info, man. I purchased my e60 m5 SMG 42k miles from original owner (75 year old gentleman) pampered and maintained. The trans was replaced around the 20k mile at the dealer. I think the smg fell victim to his lack of understanding how it works. I’m a truck driver, and the new tractors use a similar system to the SMG, it’s air and not hydraulic. Interestingly enough, a lot of drivers bad mouth the new tractors. Out of all the fleet at the terminal ( 30+ tractors) only 1, yes, only 1 is problematic. It’s a great system, but the driver needs to understand it, be patient. The driver must let the computer do its thing, or it will shoot error alerts. It has happened to me when I want the tractor to respond my way, but the computer has its way. When I drive my M5, I’m always conscious of that fact: let the computer do its thing. Don’t force it!
You don’t need to lift off the gas when shifting. I thought so also, and got into many arguments finally giving up after being told I was wrong too many times
No you dont need to but if you want it to shift super smooth and want your clutch to last longer id quick lift between gears otherwise hard shifts you will hear diff clunk in the back... over 120,000kms driving one
yea its a factory tuned launch meant to get traction and take off ... European models launch at 4000, it I launch with my foot it will dump clutch as high as 7500rpm but you just sit there and melt tires
Great explanation. Thank you very much. Just want one. Let's see how it goes. I feel a lot more confident with you. Describing the conditions of a s m g
@Burnin Gas You say to let off the throttle to shift. The only other person I’ve found on TH-cam advising how to properly drive an SMG E60 says that letting off the gas will confuse the computer increasing chance of breakdown. Just looking for clarification since I’m about to possibly pull the trigger on a 2006 M5 in less than 2 weeks and it’s crucial I keep it in the best shape possible. Also, what shift setting (3, 4, 5) would be least stress on the tranny/differential? I’ve subscribed to your channel so thank you so much for the info you’ve provided! So much negativity on TH-cam about this car from people who don’t own or really know them so I’m thankful to have found you!
I mostly do lift shifts and it seems to be fine but you can just shift and hold it steady you will see when you start driving it and lower settings is obviously gonna be less agressive on the clutching
That's interesting. I just watched another video on how to drive an SMG and it says NOT to let off the gas in-between gears because it confuses the computer. I wonder what BMW's official take on it is.... I've owned an M6 for 3 years now driving it on weekends only and I still feel like I don't know everything.
Honestly you can drive it either way if your racing someone id just leave foot down and shift but normal driving i usually lift on shifts and i now have 212000kms on car
Well you can listen to the manual. But also if you dont lift between shifts you will hear the rear diff taking a lot of extra abuse.. personally i find the shifts are much smoother and quicker by driving this way
Burnin Gas I would agree with you until I changed my clutch recently. Before I changed it had a lot of clunky shifts if I didn’t lift especially in lower gears. Now that I’ve changed the clutch along with everything in the trans it’s smooth 90% of shifts with out taking my foot off

I don’t lift and was told by many owners, some with more than one, that they don’t either. You just confuse the computer. It knows what it is doing.
Good video, keep them coming buddy
Hit subscribe for me buddy
Wow! Launching at 1500 rpm's. My Granny launched her Studebaker harder than that!
