    Dear Bill,
    I have watched your show for many years and enjoy it very much.
    I started watching tin the U.S. - I lived in Los Angeles for 32 years.
    Two years ago my partner and I moved to Portugal (a bad decision, we're gonna move to my native Finland soon, but that's another matter).
    Here in Portugal I continued watching Real Time on TH-cam. I also saw the latest show broadcast on March 31st 2023.
    I always enjoy your monologue with the day's headlines. As time passes and the longer I've been away from America, the less I care about the local issues. Don't get me wrong. I lived more than half my life there and always will consider myself part American.
    But mmigrating to the United States is not quite as simple as your guest, Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, Winsome Sears suggested: just get in line and fill out some paperwork. Her father had immigrated from Jamaica at a time when this was possible.
    It no longer is. There is no line to get in. You have to be an IT specialist, a brain surgeon, or at least a skilled nurse or equally skilled professional to hope to get sponsorship to come to the U.S.. That's why those people south of your border show up at the border stations and sometimes cross at unauthorised points.
    They have no other course of action. If you are a low-skilled a farm hand or a maid, you have no recourse to immigrate into the United States. No line to get into.
    Therefore these immigration discussions are excruciatingly frustrating for me to watch. There's never an actual immigrant who has gone through the arduous process discussing the issue. Lieutenant Governor Winsome Sears and others who immigrated as children with their parents don't count. I'm talking about present day immigrants. Ask them what line they should get into.
    The fact is that the U.S. immigration system is broken. The nostalgic documentaries of Ellis Island don't apply today.
    Talking about immigration on the show without actual immigrants is the same as if you talked about black issues without actual black person present discussing.
    I wish you made an effort to improve on this.
    The same goes for other things, such as transsexuals and the gun violence issue. There's many rumors but little facts. But I will leave it here for now.
    Thank you for your show. Keep up the good work and I will see you on TH-cam.
    Best wishes,
    Tomi

    • @finalcountdown7658
      @finalcountdown7658 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Winsome Earle-Sears is an immigrate first of all. Second, immigration of a country should be souly debated with citizens of that country who take into account what's for the country's best interests and not what's in citizens or immigrate from other countries best interests.
      Next, the guest DID NOT make it seem like immigration is or ever was simple. You CLEARLY was NOT listening. Their entire point was that immigration into the U.S. is *NOT* simple, so because of that, it's *NOT* fair to people in the past and present who are obeying the laws to see millions to be rewarded for breaking them.
      I'm am black and your comparison of blacks issues and immigration issues is illogical. Americans can talk about American immigration without any immigrates being present because immigration is an American issue.

      @shadforthw3535 ปีที่แล้ว

      Countries have no obligation to take the world's unskilled.
      When America was established and the borders were open ovwr a century ago, the u.s. offered no entitlements, No social security, no unemployment, no welfare
      , No medicaid no -nothing even for it's OWN CITIZENS! THAT'S why we allowed anyone in- because if they succeeded, the u.s. would be better off and if they didn't they would end up going back to their own country making the u.s. no worse off.
      If all you can do is make leather straps for donkeys or water buffalo you will end up needing unemployment, welfare, and then we have to pay for your English lessons and skill training too? Only a country that is suicidal would engage in that kind of immigration policy.
      You can't allow the world's unskilled to come in if you're also going to offer them entitlements when they can't succeed and they won't succeed if they're uneducated even in their OWN language.

      You do realize that areas that are predominantly all white are overwhelmingly a safer place to live with way less crime and poverty compared to a more diverse area. It's absolutely staggering to see and really shines a light on the devastating effects that a false sense of victimhood wreaks on the black community.. case in point a place I grew up near: East St Louis: My "white" grandma grew up in E.STL in the 30's & 40's but when the "white flight" happened and all of the blacks started moving in beginning in the 50's, the entire city went to absolute shit. There are blocks that literally look like a war zone. Al6ot of the house are utterly destroyed. It looks like a bomb went off every other block... And there's not a single white person left in that city and I am not kidding! I heard that every once in a while a white person would try moving in down there bc they were down on their luck and the blacks would run them off within a month by harassing them and stealing their shit. Bc alot of them down their are racist as fuck bc of the victimhood industrial complex that is perpetrated by the democrats in that surrounding area.. not all of the blacks in E.STL are shitty tho, I had a couple gang banger friends down there that I knew for quite a long time and I would buy crack/heroin off of them and just kick it. It was legit. It really sucks that (almost) an entire group of people are enslaved to a (false)mindset that is destructive on every level. It promotes laziness and criminality and a bad attitude which is fueled by the excuses that are engineered for said behavior and it perpetuates the worst of stereotypes within the community which unfortunately then spreads to decent, hardworking black people who don't deserve that label whatsoever yet may end up suffering the consequences down the road just by perception. That is an unfair dynamic by all metrics but it seems it's happening like that bc the worst acting of the bunch seem to over represent in the community. Negative traits like criminality and hustling are overwhelmingly glorified in black media. Along with the message that the "white man" is always trying to push you down and keep you from succeeding or stealing your accomplishments, etc.. there was definitely some truth to that a long time ago in regards to the way some whites treated blacks I understand. But nowadays that statement is patently false yet the false narrative is kept alive by repetition and perpetuated thru bad actors claiming to be the solution in order to curry favor with the whole group over and over again in a shameless power grab(Obama).. I wish it would get better for them folks but it seems like it just keeps repeating over and over and there is no way to stop it. There needs to be a drastic change.
      P.s.: Even tho I mention them twice, I'm not trying to single out the democrats on purpose in what I said above. It's just that my observations happen to be true and if the Democrats have held 89% of the black vote for 50+ years and those people are basically still in the same spot from the beginning, Well then they arent just partly to blame- they are complicit.

    I am a liberal living in a very red state. I agree with John Kon. We are in desperate need as a nation to get back to honest debate. That’s the way it worked on political TV shows for decades. Neither of the two parties have it all figured out. I watch this show for honest dialog and different perspectives from my own. As I said, I live in a very red state, and I am so sick of smug insults and such black and white agenda driven messaging. Sununu did it here on Overtime. It isn’t enough to state their position and back it up with facts. They have to insert character assassination and name calling every single time they speak about opposing positions. Own the Libs! That message says way more about them than it does about the left.

      We are a flawed democracy on the Democracy Index because of 1) the electoral college 2) plurality voting 3) the Senate 4) allowing state politicians of the majority party to draw district lines instead of an independent commission 5) money in politics (aka, legalized corruption), Citizens United, lobbyists, etc
      Because these things have a near zero chance of changing, we will continue to suffer the results.
      Trump is a warning sign, a symptom, of a broken political system. So, try not to hate the player. Hate the game.
      +++BONUS+++
      “We are a republic, NOT a democracy!” - says the uneducated.
      We are both!
      To simplify, our republic is like a car, and democracy is the fuel that makes the car move. The USA is like an old Chevy pickup, running on cheap gas. Sweden and Finland are like Porsches running on premium unleaded. The DPRK, Republic of Congo, and People’s Republic of China…are names that imply Maybach, Mercedes, Lamborghini, but in reality they are Pinto, Edsel, and Yugo, running on Four Loco.
      Also, the USA doesn’t care what kind of car other countries may drive, only that it runs on democracy fuel. (For example, Great Britain).
      We advocate democracy to the world, but we have not mastered it ourselves. An irony Putin enjoys pointing out.

      2020 the DNC primary had 300k votes, with Bernie Sanders winning. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_New_Hampshire_Democratic_presidential_primary
      The republican primary had ~ 145k votes with Trump winning.
      NH has ~ 1 million eligible voters but people can only vote in one of the primaries. So this ~30% turnout in the democratic primaries.
      South Carolina had 540k democratic primary voters and the republican primary was cancelled. They have ~4 million eligible voters which is where the 15% turnout comes from.
