I'm happy for tanner. My dad had a van that he taught me how to drive in. He died after my parents separated and I used to see it around town, with a new owner. I wish I had the finances to buy that van back at the time but we didn't have the money. Later on, when I did have the money, I tried to track it down but couldn't. Almost 25 years later, that remains one of my biggest regrets.
Wonder if you can find the vin usong records of his past registrations and at least pull a Carfax to see of any recent activity has been done, might even show if it's currently registered

My respect to the officer who sacrificed his life for the safety of the society, my respect to the officers that set up the auction to help other comrades, my respect to those who went to the auction putting in their bit beyond face value, my respect to the son of the fallen officer for his determination and his love for his father, my respect to the rancher for his kind heartedness and generosity.
What’s more impressive is that I read elsewhere Mr. Wells had intended to give the car to another charity, but when he heard Tanner’s story, he changed his mind. The guy wasn’t there to buy cars for himself.

The police department, which in this case is actually the Sheriff's Dept., is not like a Wal-Mart. Meaning, it is not a business that makes profits and therefore can donate or buy/sell as it wants. The people of that county pay tax money to support their law enforcement, school system, etc. So in other words, it was not theirs to just giveaway.
