  • **HubNut store is still trading during this trip!**
In this video, we encounter the colossal traffic jams of Austria and Italy, though also the considerable beauty. There is a tour of Innsbruck and lots and lots of mountains.
Then it's the big climb into the mountains to cross the border into Slovenia! Croatia is getting closer...
Thanks to all those who've supported this trip via donations and the store. Much appreciated! hubnut.org

Seems you went from Innsbruck through Mattrei and Steinach (old holliday destination of my late mum and dad and our family) over the old Brenner pass into South Tirolean Italy. My dad did it with a Mercedes 220 D 1971, which also struggled on very steep slopes in the Dolomites, driving to Cortina d'Ampezzo; wondering if he had to shift back into first as well a couple of times. However without overheating and just coasting on. With us teenagers on the back seat being enthousiast, and my mum with wet palms praying to the Allmighty and my dad at the same time. The Merc did not have power assisted steering. And when driving that slow dad really needed to use his arm muscles in all these bends.
It got so bad that he ordered me, being a 19 yr old with a fresh driving licence, to take his place behind the wheel on the way back. Before that I was NEVER allowed to touch his precious Merc. Didn't had to do much; just keep it into second gear on the long way down. And turn, and turn that big bacalite black steering wheel; keeping the star at the middle of the road. (''This is EASY.')' (''Just you keep your eyes on the road, and don't you dare shifting into third!)(''What do you think I'm doing, here, dad?) Mum from the beack seat; (''O please do not distract him, Reinder. And sh.. up.'')
Italian Alfa Guileatta overtaking us in the middle of a bend, having to slam the brakes because of a climbing big red, very unforgiving, Pegaso truck. And me having to do so as well to prevent jamming into the Alfa's back side. Mother screaming from the back seat.
Me pushing on the padded horn ring and flashing the lights, to show that ''Spaghetti'' what I thought of him. And dad shaking his fist at him through the open passenger window. (VEE VAN DE LABAN!/Biblical Dutch insult. KLOT'NKLAPPER!/ Dutch Saxony insult, not Biblical at all)
Italian disappearing in another bend in front of us as fast as he could.
    Lowlanders driving in the mountains.
    Happy memories.

I think that most of Europe is starting to become a parking lot on the roads. We get this image that it's all scenic open byways that you can cruise fast and without many others on the road. This video proves that world population is starting to clog all the roads with too many cars. I have to admit the best of the trip in this video for me was when Hubnut passed through the tunnel from Austria to Slovenia at the end. Apropos shifting into 1st when hillclimbing; Downshifting in a Dyane or 2cv for that matter from 2nd to 1st without any gear grinding or jerks is an absolute feat for the beginner. I live in a touristy, hilly town with a lot of pedestrian crossings on slopes, lots of stopping and going, so just to get out of town and into the open road I have to perform the double-clutch two or three times every time. I guess the 2cv was not engineered for city driving (and that it wasn´t) but this is one of the car´s features that reminds you that as with most classic cars, YOU drive the car and not the other way around, and this can be appealing most of times, mildly annoying at others

Colossal traffic jams of Austria??? Blame the EU for that. Before the EU stuck their oar in, traffic was very sparse. Through lorries were not allowed to pass through Austria ... all had to be piggybacked by rail from border to border. Narrow gauge rail thrived locally and the only lorries allowed to run were construction and local delivery ... from the nearest railhead of course.

As for those Mk3's.... Metallic blue MK3 Cavalier SRi hatchback, with the red highlights and black nose grille. Nice engine too.
C'mon, who remembers 'em? And where are they now?
    Scrappage scheme... Grrr...

Around 6:00 is just like the A38 between Launceston and Bodmin! Especially the traffic!

Hi Neil., Irschenberg services on the A8 south of Munich towards Salzburg must take the “best views from a Burger King “ on our way to a hilclimb in graz award. Good spot for buying a vignette, P.S . Should’ve watched the whole video before making recommendations

If your return journey takes you through Germany, there's always the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart; with the legendary 2.8 Million Miles W123? Great video Ian.....these are just so entertaining. Safe travelling mate. 👍

You need to take a drive in Canada, Mate. A few weeks ago I took my 2018 Golf 1.8 TSi over Roger's Pass in the Rocky Mountains. at 0700. Zero traffic, breathtaking views and ridiculous speeds. I am not sure of a 2CV would work in my area, however!

Such a delightful travelogue, once again. I love epic trips like this. The closest I've personally come was a series of once-a-year 60 mile treks in my Goggomobil TS400 along with a couple dozen other microcar nuts to summit Mt. Wachusett, in Massachusetts. Little cars do well when they're driven regularly, as Elly and you prove.

I drove from a hot Northern Italy, in my Convertible Herald, wearing a Tee-Shirt (me, not the Herald), through the Grand St.Bernard Tunnel, and it was VERY cold in there!

You are the perfect travel company! That viaduct at 19:12 is the Europa bridge. When it was finished in 1963 it was the highest bridge in Europe, 190 metres above the ground!

Behind the times as usually am ha ha I’m enjoying watching your exploits in Ellie. Whilst it’s not inspiring me to buy a 2CV (sorry), I am inspired to do something similar but maybe not quite so long from home

Owning a Land Rover and riding Royal Enfield motor bikes I have learnt that "Maximum Power" is a very subjective statement.
My that little Elly works well, watching the stonework mortar joints on the road side, which I assume are horizontal as you climbed that was a wickedly steep grade for any car. Let alone a 50 + year old air cooled engine with carburetor jetting for sea level, Well done Elly.

That was an epic part of the journey. Stunning roads and historically a very important border crossing. In the days of Slovenia being part of Yugoslavia, you were actually crossing the Iron Curtain. Certainly wouldn't have been as easy back then unless you had the right documents.

11;50 This building is a rotunda and would have once contained a cyclorama or, panoramic image . The building, which, originally would have been wooden and formed part of a fairground, was designed to give viewers standing in the middle of the cylinder a 360° view. Very rare.

Sounds like a challenge to me that Ian! What a vid that would make! Come on, you know it doesn't make sense, which is the main attraction of course. This expedition is the best thing I've seen on You Tube, ever btw.

You are destroying our romanticized notions about what Austria should look like, think Sound of Music. Reality has caught up with fantasy. The old part did look somewhat as expected.

I'm really enjoying this tour ,so much. I did wonder if taking a 2CV all across Europe & back was a bit bonkers at first , given its tiny engine , low power and obviously the age. I was wrong ! I want to buy one as a daily commuter , they seem mechanically simple enough for me to maintain myself. Cheers Ian 👍

I realise I'm 10 months behind everyone else, but this was another brilliant video. For various reasons I arrived at work just over an hour early this morning so I sat in the car and watched this one. As others have said, these are so engaging I feel like I'm in the passenger seat on the road with you. It was a slight shock to the system when it ended & I looked up to see a car park full of bland black & grey SUV's through the drizzle. It makes me want to go on a road trip too(obviously I'll have to wait, pesky virus!), plus I have an adventure hat just like yours....

Sturdy little Elly, I don't think my Trabant would be up to the job, being two stroke going downhill may be too heavy on the drum brakes. Uphill will be as heavy for Trabi as it is for Elly, but I don't trust it to be as robust as that amazing 2cv engine.

The Dolomites? Oh, they form a part of the Southern Limestone Alps and extend from the River Adige in the west to the Piave Valley in the east. They were produced by the Triumph Motor Company division of the British Leyland Corporation in Canley, Coventry between October 1972 and August 1980. Though I may be getting confused.

hmm feels broken only after 500 miles, must be what most cars hubnut buys feels like, a small bodger or new part not fitting well or rightbut it'll do and being driven around the welsh area hard and fast yep hubnut is turning into an old car, mind you might get some useful spare parts from him,
i think after the 100 b-day thingy with LOTS of citreons a dyanne is just a meh, hmm might need to film some other classic around,
a merecdes van camper hmm no hubnut helping? guess if you don't speak the words don't help? yeah i'll go for that, might push or pull them in my car but that'll be it to bump start it,
oh found a rather nice old volvo esate one with the classic set in lights instead of the clear plastic ones, no wipers though so boo!
well the 2cv not very safe, i mean lift up a window with ease, the roof is fabric so knife though it or just yank it back, the doors are locable but er very easy to unlock if you have a 2cv key, so yeah best to take it apart or drive one that is battered and looks to be only fit for the scrap heap oh hub nut is in that kind (sorry elly)
hub nut food vids, "gets food, eats" yeah that's okay, i like it "eats rest"

So, you drove through Lienz. That road through an A-type windshield swings me right back to 2001, the 14th International meeting of 2cv friends. After the meeting i did a road-trip through Austria in my Acadiane. Stayed in a hotel in Lienz, and drove to Graz the day after where i visited my holiday-crush for a couple of days. Ah, the memories...
