Excellent work nobel. Been playing wow for quite a while now, but other than the little i've picked up on the way, my lore knowledge is pretty poor. Really looking forward to the rest of the series.
It's an old portal to the Emeral Dream. I think they planned once to make it active, but they never did. It was also used to point the location of the 4 world dragon bosses back in Classic.
When asked about the "next Old God", Metzen responded "You haven't seen who signs Deathwing's paychecks yet." shortly followed by "The third Old God is N'Zoth + Warlord Zon'ozz who is a sevant of N'zoth and has fought against C'thun & Yog is a boss in the Dragonsoul Raid.
I know its not an old god, but still a nice picture to portray defeat ;) The thing is, we also never actually killed an old god. We fought a very small portion of them and even that we just simply pushed back beneath the world. On top of that, there is debate if our chars in WoW are part of Warcraft lore. Yes...you like...? :O Right now my favorite is Yogg-saron. The 3 visions inside his mind are brilliant and it's speculated that he had something to do with those 3 specific events. This might change when they show more of N'zoth, he also has done some terrible great things.
not big on lore, but this one is by far the best lore video i have seen. and, as a 6 year player of wow, this has given me the perspective I have not been able to attain this far. thanks.
Yes as far as lore goes, Y'shaarj is the only old god ever killed, resulting in the sha infection. He is the only dead old god, all the others are defeated but not killed. We killed Deathwing (presumably, you never know with him) with the dragon soul, everyone just forgot about N'zoth.
I use a Samson C01U. Love the quality of it, but it's very sensitive and it easily catches unwanted background noises/static. Need to figure out a way to fix that.
We know the fourth now Y'shaarj, but he's "dead". According to the current version of The Old Gods and the Ordering of Azeroth they imprisoned 5 evil gods far beneath the earth. If we don't count C'thun as imprisoned (since they believe he was dead) then we still have 2 unknown old gods on Azeroth and the possibility of many more out there in the universe.
'It had taken the combined might of many Titans to even force them into captivity; after their triumphant return, there would be little effort needed to eradicate this single, arrogant creature(Sargeras) and turn his warriors to serving their cause.' From the 'War of the ancients'. Damn old gods are badass :D
Looking forward to it. I think that the final expansion (hopefully taking us to Level 100, nothing else would be worthy) will involve a final raid against Sargeras, himself.
C'thun and deathwing have nothing to do with eachother. It was N'zoth who whisperd in his ears during Cataclysm and it was his connection to the world that made him more vulnerable to the whispers of the Old Gods.
Azeroth was formed by the titans. On which they put 'The Earthen' to shape it for them while they went off somewhere else and the guardians were a specific sort of Dragons(in the video). The Earthen were sort of huge Golems that shaped the earth and the only race there were the Night Elves and Druids etc, some of them were power crazed along with their Queen that went crazy over power (lust for magic) because of a Dreadlord(ofc). Which lead to war and the Well of Eternity, the source of their power blew up scaring the earth and deviding the continents (today its the 'Maelstorm' the trace of the explosion from the Well). The Earthen were damaged and burried themselves deep within to heal. After they came out, their stone skin tturned to flesh and they shrinked becoming Dwarves (Yes the Dwarves were Earthen once) which explains how well they are good with their hands on materials and crafting. Illidan took a few drops from the Well because he wanted the power left, he used the drops on mount Hyjal which resulted the World Tree(not Illidans plan). Edit: After the Well exploded, whoever was in the blast radius turned into Nagas.
Azeroth existed before the Titans arrived. Azeroth is a baby Titan Soul that has not yet awakened. The Titans only wanted to shape it and order it so that it would awaken in the best possible state, they did not themselves create Azeroth.
you do a great job on the lore. keep up the good work. even if I eventually un-sub the game there's a part of me that wants to see where blizzard is ultimately going with this old god-vs-titans-vs-sargeras 3 way war so keep reporting on it, I'll keep watching
It's in Darkshore and no it's not Sargeras. "It's a massive minion of the Old Gods named Soggoth the Slitherer. A similiar site exists in Twilight Highlands, known as the Husk of Sor'getha."
"The nefarious, scheming dreadlords turned whole nations against one another by manipulating them into unthinking hatred and mistrust. Sargeras defeated the Nathrezim easily, but their corruption affected him deeply." Not their essence, but their veil acts of corruption took controle of his heart and mind. "As doubt and despair overwhelmed Sargeras' senses, he lost all faith, not only in his mission, but also in the Titans' vision of an ordered universe."
Yes it was :) From The Emperor's Burden - Part 8: "Legend tells that he ascended to the Terrace of Endless Spring, there to separate Pandaria from the rest of the world."
We've already fought multiple Old Gods, though. The reason that the Titans didn't destroy the Old Gods was because they actually multiply when they are killed, which makes it smarter to just imprison them whole beneath Azeroth. Y'shaarj is supposed to be an Old God that was killed, but the Sha were formed as leftover remnants of him. Keep in mind, the titans were able to imprison these old gods, and Sargeras used to be their leader. He's a pretty dangerous enemy.
Nobbel is actually not annoying in this video. Usually people get better at making videos, but you were sooo much better at communicating in your first videos.
When the well imploded it dragged everything around it down with it, including a large amount of elves and their queen. But as they were being dragged down into the depths, the queen heard a voice of a unknown being that promised them life in return for their aid when he needed it. The queen accepted and she and her people were transformed into the first of the Naga, causing them to survive. The remnants of the well can be still be found in the middle of the sea, in the form of the Maelstrom
One of the Generals of the old gods was Thunderaan. You see him in the Legendary-Sword Quest for Thunderfury. Thunderaan was tricked by Ragnaros (after all both were rivals), entraped and his prison cut in 2 parts. Ragnaros gave those parts two 2 of his own generals. Lord Geddon and Garr. The elemental leaders, like Rangaros, served the old gods and are far from friendly (you saw that after Thunderaan was brought back)
Apparently there are seven Old Gods total on Azeroth, with four named, and three now dead (as N'Zoth is still around). But we can never truly know how many there are, as you're right, there could be many more out there in the universe.
Does anyone have any suggested books read on this subject, I really want to get into this universe, but there are SOOOO many books; I do not know where to start,
Nobbel87 Even there you barely get any information, tbh if you want answers about the old gods then you should check the lore that the old gods are inspired from,H.P lovercraft the call of Cthulu,I bet a big parts from that lore exist in the universe of Azeroth, but that raise the question who is the equivlient to Azhazoth in Azeroth's universe, that being will have to be the most powerfull being in the universe.
Play game, clearly only for lore. Also read WoWWiki a lot, and don't forget to check if the information correct with other alike sources. Read books is good too, but they don't explain as much. But you surely shud read books ingame. Oh and yeah, play all the Warcraft games, including 1 and 2.
+John Keith I would play the game itself. Discover things that interest you, and pursue the information that comes with it. I've done it for 10 years, with more in-depth knowledge from the books as well.
We haven't really stopped Sargeras yet... I heard rumors or speculation about the expansion after MoP to be "the return of the black legion" where Sargeras could possibly be defeated? Awesome videos man! :)
"My pride coverd the land in mists" which could be the Sha of Pride or he was so proud that he didn't realise covering the land in mists would be bad for his people. Either way, it came from the emperor ;)
Really cool video dude, one little thing though, In Uldum you said it was the Hall of Lighting, but thats in Northrend, it's the Hall of Origination in Uldum :P
Arthas what are you doing here?! Y'shaarj after the second war? No, the titans were long gone when that war started. 1 old god was killed, later to be named Y'shaarj the same one who took a titan with him (although uncertain if that titan was killed). They didn't mention Y'shaarj since that story was made in Classic WoW, before MoP.
Depends on the view of it. Sargeras felt a despair, some believe it was the Dreadlords, Mal'Ganis example, who poisoined his mind. Some that it was simply the endless fighting against demons. All in all, he began to see the work of the titans as wrong, that they were trying to change, what should not be changed, as it was made for a purpose. If I should explain all of it, I'd need a lot more space than what youtube allow me :)
Hopefully they'll save such an epic battle for Warcraft 4 where you can have a lot more troops to fight such an epic boss. Even so...there is more darkness in the universe. Who or what created the Old Gods for example, where is it's source? Sargeras is powerfull, but I doubt that he is the end.
also, there's the slight factor of the Darkshore 'Old God' You see, I didn't get the impression he was really an Old God. I think he was a great servant of the Old Gods. Also, (at least in the vanilla days) Naga were along the coastline of Stranglethorn. But who knows.
The locations of the old gods was a really cool idea, but i think you were slightly off with strangle thorn. I think it would more likely be in west fall, because one of the plot wholes in cata was the fight light shooting out of the ground with rocks spinning around it in the air was never actually explained beyond it showed up because of the cataclysm. The crater is also full of giant slimes which to me seems very much like the old god blood we've seen before.
Sargeras reminds me a bit of Sisyphus: he keeps banishing demons and keeping order within the universe, only for more demons and chaos to spring up again. It's no wonder he gave in to despair and turned against the Titans, I think anyone would if you had to carry out such futile work.
wouldn't it be amazing if it turns out that sargaras was corrupted by an old god... that would change everything. Imagine everyone fighting sargaras and finally after beating him an old god shows up. Because lets be honest he was the fighter, the others titans probably didn't get close to so many planets, if there are so many old gods out in worlds, constant corruption could have caused sargaras turn, especially since he turned quite rapidly which is strange considering the rest of the titans remained good.
+xxJOHNLIKESPIExx Apparently he, essentially, corrupted himself. He is not so much evil as he is the misguided hero. The Void Lords, a race of beings that envied the Titans and yearned for their power, set out to corrupt the universe in hopes of corrupting unborn Titans within planets. When Sargeras found out about it, he thought the only way to defeat these beings was to erase the universe (*cough* Arthas *cough*) while the other Titans believed there had to be some other way (*cough* Uther *cough*). Thus, Sargeras disbanded from the Titans and allied himself with the Burning Legion (*cough* Scourge *cough*) seeking to destroy the entire universe.
Sargeras Created the Burning Legion. Sargeras is absolutely afraid of the Void Lords and their power, so he set out on his "Burning Crusade" to destroy all life so that the Void Lord's couldn't use their servants (Old Gods) to corrupt them.
To quote source: "As the Pantheon's greatest warrior, Sargeras, hunted the vile creatures wherever he could find them, he soon learned that some demons had learned to wield Void energies. He was puzzled by this, but continued his work nonetheless. One day, however, Sargeras discovered a world-soul that had been almost completely corrupted by the Old Gods. Its surface was covered in Void energies, and the normally tranquil dreams of the nascent titan had been twisted into horrific nightmares. Sargeras ruthlessly interrogated the black world's nathrezim inhabitants, who had come to dwell amongst the Old Gods, and through them he learned of the void lords and their intentions. Enraged and anguished, Sargeras smote the demons and cleaved the corrupted world in two, instantly killing the world-soul within. It was this event that led Sargeras to abandon his brethren in the Pantheon, form the demonic Burning Legion and vow to purge the cosmos of all life - in his mind, a lifeless universe was better than one absolutely ripped apart by the Void, for he argued that if life had once taken root in the Great Dark on its own, perhaps it would do so again."
Four old gods have been revealed. Their names and occupation are as following: C'thun, in Ahn'Qiraj; Yogg-Saron, in Ulduar; Y'Shaarj, killed by the titans; and N'Zoth, who aided Deathwing in Cata.
All of this was actually mentioned in the video (except that "whatever transformed Azshara and her highborn into naga" most likely was a old god whispering to them) but since you seemed a bit confused I though I might as well try to clarify, I hope it helped :)
In the books, Nozdormu timeshifts into the well in order to find a anomaly that almost broke the timeline, and eventually almost gets consumed by the Old god prime located in the core of Azeroth.
Since Pandaria we know that the destruction of the Well of Eternity did not cause the splitting of the world, but was actually done by the Pandaren emperor Shao Hao. He forsaw the destruction the burning legion would've created and went on an (rather epic) journey to become one with the land (Kalimdor) and split it for the good of all the races present at the time
The Titans created the Well. He stated there was something else, something that was there before the Titans came along and the reason why Azeroth is the planet that's been able to stand against the Legion and defeat both Titans and Old Gods. Basicly he said they were gonna reveal to us why Azeroth is the planet that WOW is all about.
Somewhat unrelated to the story but... I noticed that in the map of the galaxy at 5:55 there was not only azeroth but also several of the planets from starcraft. As an enthusiast of both franchises I've noticed that the stories about the beginning of life are both incredibly similar (the Pantheon of Titans, with one titan fallen into madness and seeking to undo their creations [sargeras] and the Xel'Naga with one fallen into madness and seeking to undo their creations [amon], and in the starcraft universe theres also the Voice in the Darkness, which could be an old god, perhaps the missing unnamed one from the warcraft universe?) is it possible that they all take place in the same universe and it's just the nomenclature that's different? Titans = Xel'Naga? Many of the holes in the stories could be filled by the other if they are one and the same. The Titans fell silent and nobody knows why? The Zerg turned on and nearly annihilated them. Amon was killed at some point and nobody knows where, why or how? Sargeras was destroyed when the well of eternity collapsed on him. It's a weird twist but a lot would be explained i think. Just a thought. Not to mention it'd be really neat to see zerg and protoss alongside the orcs, humans and nightelves in the final battle against whatever the common enemy would turn out to be. :)
4:03 I've seen somewhere that there are only three remaining Old Gods (can't remember where, I think it was book, not sure if in-game or real). The Old Gods had inhabited the Well of Eternity in the War of the Ancients. When the tower fell the water of the Well flooded Azshara's chamber and transformed her and her handmaidens into the naga. That location has been shown in Cataclysm as the entrance to Deepholm now, and I think the Old Gods have left that location. Cont. next post
Well, i think that they keep old gods as secret villains behind everything else. There's still N'zoth alive somewhere. They drove Deathwing insane. M8be they will make them responsible for Sargeras madness.
I think it's highly likely that the old gods corrupted Sargeras, and that he actually serves them directly or indirectly. I think this is plausible because the old gods aren't necessarily bound to, or from, Azeroth. On top of that, what happened to Sargeras ("falling into despair") is very similar to what happened to deathwing, and it's the trademark method of the old gods.
Sargeras was the commander of the Burning Legion, AKA the demons of the universe, and he formed a alliance with the High Elves queen Azshara. She promised that she would open a portal into their world using the wast powers of the Well of Eternity so that the demons could take the world as their own, in return for power. However the ritual was stopped, but the powers allready unleashed caused the Well to implode on itself, shattering the world and creating the 4 continents we know of today.
Part of Sargeras' corruption was despair and minor manipulation from the Dread Lords. If I recall the Dread Lords used to be mortal until they fucked with Vampiric magic and became full fledges demon like creatures. Even stranger, they aren't considered demons logically...in game of course targeting them does label them as such.
In the book "Dawn of the Aspects", a guardian (I guess Tyr, I forgot his name) kinda gave the powers to the dragons, not the titans theirselves. After the dragons defeated Galakrond, who was in some kind of cannibal madness (maybe Yogg-saron's influence?), Tyr gave them the aspect powers, because they proved they were worthy of it.
Do you think we could handle it? "Sargeras is nearly impervious to physical damage. He is highly resistant to magical attacks. His natural attacks are more powerful than other titans. Demonic influences have given Sargeras' body flames and made him totally immune to fire damage and fel damage. Sargeras’ flesh burns with demonic energy, scorching everything in his path. Sargeras' body flames slowly increase the ambient temperature by up to fifty degrees in every direction for one thousand miles"
I think the whispering forest is like a membrane between Azeroth and the emerald dream. As the fey dragon are often evolved with the dream. This could explain why the high elves started to go mad when they landed in Lorderon as the emerald dream would contain a version of the well of eternity. The wells power would emanate via the mushroom circle steering the high elves' arcane addiction.
Oh one thing: the thing impaled on that glaive was mearly a major servant of the old gods, as found out in the new cata darkshore questline where u must kill its budding avatar after the twilights hammer tried to resurect their masters beloved pet.
Well the thing is nobbel when they said destroying them would destroy azeroth, they said it was because they were tied to azeroth to much to be destroyed, though this fact seems to have been forgotten in lore, like many other things. The sha infestation yes could potentially destroy azeroth, but that is indirectly. It was implied that the energy released by the death of the old gods would tear the planet apart, much like outland, which is directly caused by their deaths, the sha infestation is

'It had taken the combined might of many
Titans to even force them into captivity; after their triumphant return, there would be little effort needed to eradicate
this single, arrogant creature(Sargeras) and turn his warriors to serving their cause.' From the 'War of the ancients'. Damn old gods are badass :D
Looking forward to it. I think that the final expansion (hopefully taking us to Level 100, nothing else would be worthy) will involve a final raid against Sargeras, himself.
Posted a link in the description, can also find it by searching google images: "grand universe"
Sargeras defeated the Nathrezim easily, but their corruption affected him deeply."
Not their essence, but their veil acts of corruption took controle of his heart and mind.
"As doubt and despair overwhelmed Sargeras' senses, he lost all faith, not only in his mission, but also in the Titans' vision of an ordered universe."
Now we have shadowlands...
Thanks for the new playlist!
Does anyone have any suggested books read on this subject, I really want to get into this universe, but there are SOOOO many books; I do not know where to start,
If you're looking for titan/old god lore I'd start with the War of the Ancients trilogy.
Stormrage picks up the parts with the emerald dream
Using freaking Avatar the Last Airbender clips.
I love it.
The final boss chamber in Mogu shan vaults was directly taken from the movie the last air bender.
silverspear21
Shhhhhh, there is no Last Airbender Movie. We don't talk about that horror.
Choryllis Haha I could never finish that movie or watch it in one sitting. I have only seen bits and pieces of it.
silverspear21
Good. I was ready to gouge my eyes and ears out in the first 10 minutes.
Found Chromie today! She's standing in Stormwind next to the piece of Deathwing his armor to tell the Cataclysm end cinematic.
According to Chris Metzen on the last BlizzCon, there's something special about Azeroth which made it so desireable to the burning legion
So Old Gods feed on chaos, does this mean that every expansion the old gods grow stronger?
Pretty much
yeah pretty much cause in each expansion there is chaos. Just look at legion for example
Pretty much and in Cataclysm they got so strong they tried breaking out of their prisons by causing The Hour of Twilight.
And what do you know, the new expansion a random war starts between the factions .. DUN DUN DUN, lol
I thought chaos was fel? This whole magic difference is just confusing
Sargeras's descent is pretty clearly defined as just despair and depression after years fighting demons.
Hopefully they'll save such an epic battle for Warcraft 4 where you can have a lot more troops to fight such an epic boss. Even so...there is more darkness in the universe. Who or what created the Old Gods for example, where is it's source? Sargeras is powerfull, but I doubt that he is the end.
yeah same but u really did this video well now i kinda get an understanding on what happened and how the emerald dream got demolished
also, there's the slight factor of the Darkshore 'Old God'
You see, I didn't get the impression he was really an Old God.
Ahh like that, yeah can see the comparisment.
To include destroying baby Titan Souls that have too much corruption from Old Gods.
To quote source:
"As the Pantheon's greatest warrior, Sargeras, hunted the vile creatures wherever he could find them, he soon learned that some demons had learned to wield Void energies.
All of this was actually mentioned in the video (except that "whatever transformed Azshara and her highborn into naga" most likely was a old god whispering to them) but since you seemed a bit confused I though I might as well try to clarify, I hope it helped :)
that magazine or comic or poster or whatever it is, what is it called? (1:11) or where is that image taken from?
In the books, Nozdormu timeshifts into the well in order to find a anomaly that almost broke the timeline, and eventually almost gets consumed by the Old god prime located in the core of Azeroth.
Seeing your Lore vids is making my BlizzFan Blood boiling. I want to return to Azeroth so bad now. :(
Aye, the Well of Eternity.
5:55 Char left from Azeroth, could bizzards project titan be a merging of starcraft and warcraft worlds?
yes
#1: Yogg-saron. #2 Y'shaarj. #3 N'zoth. If we don't count #4 C'thun that means 2 more old gods left.
Somewhat unrelated to the story but...
I noticed that in the map of the galaxy at 5:55 there was not only azeroth but also several of the planets from starcraft. As an enthusiast of both franchises I've noticed that the stories about the beginning of life are both incredibly similar (the Pantheon of Titans, with one titan fallen into madness and seeking to undo their creations [sargeras] and the Xel'Naga with one fallen into madness and seeking to undo their creations [amon], and in the starcraft universe theres also the Voice in the Darkness, which could be an old god, perhaps the missing unnamed one from the warcraft universe?)
is it possible that they all take place in the same universe and it's just the nomenclature that's different? Titans = Xel'Naga? Many of the holes in the stories could be filled by the other if they are one and the same. The Titans fell silent and nobody knows why? The Zerg turned on and nearly annihilated them. Amon was killed at some point and nobody knows where, why or how? Sargeras was destroyed when the well of eternity collapsed on him. It's a weird twist but a lot would be explained i think. Just a thought.
Not to mention it'd be really neat to see zerg and protoss alongside the orcs, humans and nightelves in the final battle against whatever the common enemy would turn out to be. :)
4:03
I've seen somewhere that there are only three remaining Old Gods (can't remember where, I think it was book, not sure if in-game or real).
Cont. next post
What video is that?
I can :) Found it with Google, search term "titans azeroth."Placed a link in the description!
at 8:13 in red it says azjol nerub, would those later become the nerubians?
Yeah that is how it stands now after they redid the lore over again
Do you think we could handle it? "Sargeras is nearly impervious to physical damage. He is highly resistant to magical attacks. His natural attacks are more powerful than other titans. Demonic influences have given Sargeras' body flames and made him totally immune to fire damage and fel damage. Sargeras’ flesh burns with demonic energy, scorching everything in his path. Sargeras' body flames slowly increase the ambient temperature by up to fifty degrees in every direction for one thousand miles"
"The titans found out that killing an old god would mean the destruction of Azeroth." Yet, they were somehow able to get away with killing Y'shaarj.
+GuyverU01 how do you think they found out?
+AmountainLion4 read the wowpedia article.
Awesome job mate!
Oh one thing: the thing impaled on that glaive was mearly a major servant of the old gods, as found out in the new cata darkshore questline where u must kill its budding avatar after the twilights hammer tried to resurect their masters beloved pet.
You mean the one on the beach of Darkshore? Yes, that's a minion of the Old Gods.
whoa whoa whoa you, at the Well section you forgot the greatest hero of all time Broxigar the Red
Nobbel, first of all I like your videos alot :) second of all, do you know when patch 5.4 comes out?
Well the thing is nobbel when they said destroying them would destroy azeroth, they said it was because they were tied to azeroth to much to be destroyed, though this fact seems to have been forgotten in lore, like many other things. The sha infestation yes could potentially destroy azeroth, but that is indirectly. It was implied that the energy released by the death of the old gods would tear the planet apart, much like outland, which is directly caused by their deaths, the sha infestation is
