    As a huge Tolkien fan, I have to say that once I've heard your music, your voice and seen your face, my first thought was "This must be Tinúviel!" and you bear more than a passing resemblance to Edith Bratt, the one who inspired the character. I've always felt that the harp has an almost magical, ethereal quality that is unmatched save by a very few instruments.

    The oldest reference to a harp is in Scotland (known here as a clàrsach). The earliest depictions of a harp can be found carved on 8th century Pictish stones in Scotland. These stones show the familiar triangular framed harp, with a fore pillar. It's usage apparently spread south from Scotland to the Anglo Saxons who commonly used gut strings (our Pictish harps were strung with horsehair), and also west to the Gaels of the Scottish Highlands and on to Ireland.
    The earliest written reference to a harp is found in the Book of Deer, a 10th century manuscript from the north of Scotland. The manuscript contains a poem that mentions a harpist named Calum Cille. It was a popular instrument in Scotland during the Middle Ages and was used in both secular and religious music. It was also used as a symbol of our identity.
    The harp continued to be played in Scotland until the 18th century. However, the popularity of the instrument declined in the 19th century quite a bit. Then in the 20th century, there was a revival of interest in the harp in Scotland and it's now played by both traditional and classical musicians, still being used mostly in folk music and in Celtic music.

    • @NaomiSV
      @NaomiSV  ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, I think piano is the best instrument to go from if you want to learn the harp! When I first started playing, I mainly drew from my piano repertoire and adapted it from the harp. The notes are laid out in a similar way, so it can be quite intuitive.

    • @heatheryyy
      @heatheryyy ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NaomiSV Ahhh that's so good to know. I started learning music on recorders and then piano, as most children do, but I never managed to get proficient. It was singing that clicked for me, so I went through my grades for classical singing and my piano fell by the wayside a little. Hopefully, there's enough in my brain left to pick up something like harp. It's so beautiful, I would love it!

    • @NaomiSV
      @NaomiSV  ปีที่แล้ว

      Very cool that you’re into classical singing! Honestly, the point of music should be to have fun, not to be proficient. If you’re interested in learning the harp, you should go for it! Harpsicles are relatively affordable (harps are expensive…) and a good way to test whether you enjoy playing before committing to a bigger harp. It’s worth checking music stores for rentals too!

    A harp is a healing instrument...Like when David played to King Saul it overcame the spirit
    of melancholy that was assailing him? A natural wood harp must be especially so. Like I
    like to play a classical guitar from rosewood and mahogany, etc. With the harp as with the
    guitar it is maybe the sound vibrations that are beneficial, providing of course that the harp
    is played with sensitivity...Maybe you agree? Christmas blessings 🍎🍊🧀🍰🫖🍷🎄🎶🖋x ❤

      Thank you! Perhaps I’ll do another Q&A when I reach 100 patrons.
      But until then, to answer your questions:
      - I’ve been playing the harp since December 2019. I have travelled with the harp before, but I most often play and record from home.
      - I studied film!

    The violin & cello are 2 of my favorite instruments. Some of my absolute favorite music is hard rock/heavy metal played on strings, & classical played on an electric guitar… Moonlight Sonata played on electric guitar is amazing, just like your cover of Sound of Silence on the harp.

    Super! Je suis tombée par hasard sur tes vidéos, et j'étais contente de découvrir tes origines québécoises. Toujours le fun voir jusqu'où on rayonne, nous les Gaulois et Gauloises ;) J'adore la musique, ton humilité et ton sens d'humeur. Et le fait que tu appel des chevreuils avec la harpe. Bonne continuation.

    Maieuh je savais pas que tu étais québécoise ! Si j'avais si je me serais pas cassé la tête je me serais pas cassé la tête commenter en Anglais xD
    C'était vraiment super d'en savoir plus sur toi au delà que tu joue de la harpe et de ton affinité prononcée pour les cerfs :p C'était vraiment intéressant et ça montre vraiment qu'il y a une personne très vibrante derrière tout ça !
    Bravo pour ta première année sur TH-cam, et je t'en souhaite beaucoup d'autres ! Surtout que des gens avec autant de passion, d'application, et de créativité sont rares sur TH-cam :)

    The Valkerian creator has chosen you! Haha 😂 (as his favorite harp music player!). I rarely subscribe in TH-cam, but when I do it’s someone special like this ^_^. Also, instrumental music and OST’s are a massive inspiration for me and my writing hobby, so this harp music does resonate with me, at a spiritual level.

    New to this channel - random TH-cam feed. Fourth video watched.
    Speaking for her neighbors: it isn't the late night harp music, it is the deer pest problems that started when she moved in. 😁
    Okay - sure multi skilled instrumentalist, but when she pulled out the plastic encased xylohone thing (not sure what it was - I'm mostly musically illiterate, though I might play percussions better than a chimp) - at that point she was just showing off! 😁
    I have to subscribe just because of her broad skill sets, excellent execution, and positive content (and my deer fetish - did I type that out loud - crap). 👍

    Really want to thank Naomi for motivating me to try and learn to play music. Couldn't find a Harp even after lot of research but kept the motivation given by her alive and ordered a Yamaha PSR i500 Keyboard 🎹 online. It will be delivered on coming Monday. I hope for a humble beginning so that atleast some creative side of life I am able to experience..🤞
