As Linus already said... It works but only up to the thermal limit of the device.
Doesn't matter the cooling solution, there is only so much heat the device can dissipate given its size.

Well, unless you use air cooling and actually get rid of the heat. Liquid cooling will always have the same limitation as passive cooling, the thermal capacity of the phone body.
I love it when companies are innovative and try new things. You have to imagine how happy the engineers will be, when they get money and time to try something completely new. Very often, engineers are limited by the sales people who complain about a few cents and you have to go with a worse solution just because of costs. This can be quite frustrating. So I only feel good for these people, when they get to show their skills and effort that they put into innovating a product.
But they’re not innovating. 95% of time, The concepts are merely PR, to generate attention for the brand.

Honestly I like the crazy concepts. Smartphones have become so good that it's almost a bit stale at the moment. Breaking boundaries and being different is exciting. I guess there's the PR side of it - companies want recognition on what's behind the scenes, but then they can also build feedback on what people think of their ideas.
yeah, almost all new phones kind of just make me feel "wow, a 10% better camera and an 8% faster processor. Just like last year. And the year before.. and before that..."
These weird concept phones sometimes are actually exciting, since they introduce new features that seem kind of cool. Maybe not super practical, but they potentially can lead into cool new polished features in the future- See foldables for example, there are so many different cool designs that are slowly becoming more and more refined to the point where they seem like a genuinely good option besides just a gimmick.
Stale? There are literally samsung alien tech out on the shelves.

The thing with R&D, is that it has to be like "Throw everything at the wall, see what sticks". In case of product companies though the responsibilties are divided. The researchers and engineers are the people doing the throwing, while the management and sales need to handle the sticking. However, many times what does not stick for one company or for one product, may stick for another. Or what didn't stick now would stick in future. Therefore, the throwing is important whether it sticks or not. There have been cases where a stray, forgotten paper from half a century ago has gained sudden importance. Sure, for the consumers and management, a concept device is just a PR move. But for the R&D, it may be a major breakthrough.
I have an amazing breakthrough idea they can easily implement. Add the ability to expand storage space. I heard it was called SD card compatibility. Crazy right?
Or something even more weird. Actually having the super ability to open the phone and remove the battery.
I have another where you can actually connect wired headphones and not worry about wireless headphones battery running out while you are watching a movie or something etc but maybe that is going too far.
I have lots of this crazy concept ideas. If any company wants to contact me am here all day.

@@SIPEROTH All of what you said are still available in phones, just not all of them. And it is very important to point out that any product that reaches you was specifically made to make profit. Management asked and engineers and researchers delivered. Those very engineers are probably using a phone with all those features you mentioned. They don't usually get a say in what to sell. A concept is just a researchers work at show. If that concept somehow is able to attract some money that means more money for further research. You have no idea how many good innovations or invention are limited to paper just because of lack of money, because they won't make profit.
And while removing the headphone jack has inconvenienced many, it has led to further innovations in wireless technology. It has led to having one less ingress point for waterproofing. Many people love not having to connect a wire. Making the battery non-removable have made batteries bigger and denser. Again also adding more waterproofing. Ofcourse all of it is probably possible without compromises, but a company still needs to make profit. Because if it doesn't, forget about the features you won't see the product itself.
The point is there will always be someone inconvenienced by a new thing, however that cannot and should not stop innovation.
@@catboy3471 I will tell you with absolute certainty that 98% of Apple users have not used most of those features (Expect Dynamic Island since its a default behavior, although it also saved no lives either). And Apple makes huge (literally out of your comprehension) amounts of profit that they put in R&D. Just like Marques said, there probably is a USB-C iPhone sitting somewhere in their research center. But because of the amount of money they make they don't need to release a concept phone to hype people. When Apple removed the headphone jack quoting "Courage", they weren't completely lying. But a company like Apple could have shown that courage. Any other brand could have possibly gone down under. Also ECG was on other smartwatches before Apple watch.
OnePlus (and most Chinese brands) actually sell their phones in loss for few years before they start making profit. They need to rely on investors to continue their R&D. Investors, who only invest if they see a profit.
And none of the things you mentioned are useless. Unfortunately, I must throw Marques under the bus here, but he isn't exactly qualified to check if the liquid cooling is useful or not. And it does not need to be useful right away either. Just like the liquid cooling was useless to Marques, it was not for Linus. Like how a 1 inch sensor did not excite Marques, it excited MrWhosetheboss Arun. They saw that ofcourse for an average consumer, none of these are useful, now. But they did not deny the possibilities. And that is what Concept devices represent, possibilities.
Not everything have to save lives. If that was the case a knife, that can cut a human and vegetable alike, would have never been invented.

It's not just a PR stunt - it advances the industry forward. Other companies look at them and determine what is possible, it inspires others. The first people to make a folding smart phone were probably laughed at, but it's gaining more and more traction now - and that was born from the idea of a concept. Eventually, a concept phone could come out that defines the game all over again.

But sure I'll indulge you. People laughed at Samsung and other android phones when they did it as well. You seem to be mistaking laughing with caring. Apple proved (and continuous to prove) that no matter how much the vocal online audiences complain they can take away features and assets all day and people will still buy their products. Then once Apple has done it the heat is off other phone brands (Apple isn't the biggest but they are big enough that they can set trends) so they do the same. When these "ideas" (I question calling removing features an idea (like I wouldn't call a portless phone an idea (at least not an innovative one)) come around they have a clear purpose of not benefiting the end user but saving the manufacturer money. So of course companies will jump at it when they can. What I don't understand is how consumers can use that as a point to draw battle lines as if any one of these corporations care about you beyond your wallet.

They’re not JUST pr stunts. They are also a way to test the waters and see what features people would be willing to spend more for, what’s worth investing more in miniaturizing / reducing production cost on, etc.

The issue with liquid cooling is that it's still limited by the thermal capacity of the phone's body. So in other words you can have an almost as good effect for far cheaper by turning the whole phone into a better passive heatsink (heatshield and all metal case with a good connection to the SoC) or you actually get the heat out of there with air cooling.
So they are stunts? You just described the specific type of PR stunt. The get find out what kind of people like and spend money on by making a render. Companies have focus groups. There’s a reason Apple sells so much. They give people a good smartphone experience. Not everyone wants to root their phone or have every single inch customized or even care about a finger print sensor. People are willing to spend more for the same 3 things as always. Battery. Screen. Camera. Nothing else in a phone matters

my favorite concept phone was that all screen xioami phone where the entire phone was a screen it even wrapped to the back, i loooved the charging animation on that and the seamless ability to take selfies using the back camera without a "separate" extra tiny screen like other concept phones
I do feel like rollable phones are going to be a thing since Samsung is putting a fair amount of resources into it. I also feel like they make more sense than foldables. No crease, no extra cameras or screens, no double thickness.
cant imagine a tech guy would say stop to concept phones. I love concepts. I loved like all the stuff you showed. I get that your point is by the time its released as a concept phone, it means its not likely to ever come to fruition, they just want to gain some attention so people think that some day they might do something cool like that showed "that day". i personally just love seeing the tech. we dont see much innovation in phones anymore. a big part of that is money. too much innovation, the phone costs too much, people wont buy. and companies arent in the business of making niche products. still though. its nice to see where the tech is at and yea, ill be a sucker and hope that some day, a company will do the tech its justice and we'll see it released. maybe it'll be well received and lead to more innovation through competition. the foldable screen is a great example of that. it's niche, but people like it enough for multiple companies to attempt it and innovate it. That could be the case with any of the tech in these concept phones.

People might remember that Apple used to do "concept videos", where they'd take a research idea and get it far enough along to show a cool demo video of it. So it wasn't something you could buy, but it showed off some of the ideas that Apple was working on. Those died when Steve Jobs returned. He hated them. I believe he liked the saying of "Real artists ship".

@Marton Low - you're describing real, buyable products which deliver the actual concept. I'm referring to concept *videos,* which would show off some amazing technology which wasn't actually implemented yet. The most famous example being the video for the "Knowledge Navigator" in the late 1990's. This video from Marques looks at a product which (kinda) delivers on some cool-sounding concept, but in such a weak implementation that it's almost certainly a dead-end. It does not look like it will ever become a must-have feature on a mainframe product.
Since the return of Steve Jobs, Apple has had a few product announcements which were mis-fires, but not "concept" products.

Why would you want them to stop? It's really cool to see these kinds of concepts and I'm sure the teams that did all the R&D work also get a kick out of showing them.
is it practical? not really ***(at least as it's being used now, although definitely practical in concept)***, but it's cool to see this concept coming down the pipeline, it gives a lot of inspiration.

You will always have failures but that doesn't mean to entirely stop trying. If companies stopped trying to do weird stuff, we would never get the foldable phones or under display cameras etc
I thought the Mi Mix Alpha would make the list for crazy concept phones, the way that phone looked and the charging animation is so cool, futuristic and conceptual!

Tbh Mi mix alpha just had the looks nothing else was beneficial in it. Like why would you turn your device to see the other page when you can just swipe it?
The only thing that was interesting and practical in that device was the virtual volume rockers.

My favorite concept phone was like two phones stacked on top of eachother. Still only one screen but the back part moved up slightly and that's where the camera was. So it was a full edge to edge display with no camera interrupting it, plus you could put a bigger battery in the the back half. And since the camera slid up it's by default a physical privacy cover

Phones do get hot. I always use mine on speaker phone
The idea sounds pretty sick, I did have quite the heating problems when using my iPhone in the tropics. Like putting a block of ice on the back of the phone to be able to use it at all.

That liquid cooling thing I think is mainly useful when you attach a peltier cooler. It can spread the coldness evenly instead of making condensation in one spot.

You'll get 1 minute slower charging time and lose 3-4 fps
Literally just watched Linus's video on this and honestly I'm happy with the ongoing innovation.. Its tough to have a water cooling solution for phones due to the lack of space but still c'mon.. it will more likely contribute to more research in this sector and better overall performance for the consumer market. Also OnePlus back with them innovations.
Edit : That is very true. OnePlus used to be one of the best at price to performance but now its alas.. By Innovation i meant companies like Xiaomi or OnePlus always go a little way to add extra features or gimmicks that makes them fun.. not perfect in any way but who doesn't love a bit of new.
Edit 2 : I meant innovation in phones in general but definitely was a mistake to highlight OnePlus in this case.. i loved this feature although it didn't provide that big of a performance difference because i always loved the concept of a water cooled phone so i became a little too excited when this was brought on lmao.

Hello Marques, I enjoyed this video, it reminded me of my days of using the Blackberry Passport, which was sort of the project phone from Blackberry back in the day and came out around the same time as the 5 and was much progressive in its design and capabilities, will it be possible if you could do a review of it? I'd be really impressed if someone made a concept phone without optics hanging out its rear end and a hole in the screen. And then followed through by making it into a real phone

It's also a great way to gauge whether people want a particular idea. I'd love a screen that is natively matte (how it used to be done for all displays until about 20 years ago). The matte screen protectors that I use dim the display a little anyway.
I don't like it. The image is worse. Shiny screens look much better. Better colours and light.
Matte glass is bad. Look bad on amoled displays and even worse in LCDs.

Built in display matt layer also decreases sharpness and makes screen dimmer, there is a reason why screens are not Matt in laptops even though they don't have touchscreens
@@cyjanek7818 If someone, like me for example, installs a matte screen protector, and is willing to make those sacrifices to do so; doesn't it stand to reason that getting a device with fewer layers, and thus better clarity than a screen protector, makes sense for that person? It doesn't mean that you have to choose it if your prefer glossy.
Also matte laptops, and desktop monitors are still common, because they make looking at the display in real world conditions much easier.

I didn’t expect that liquid cooling was possible on a smartphone at this decade.
We could move liquid in much smaller spaces decades ago. The real question is whether this has any practical sense, or that said company is hyping up something that won't be useful. My 2 cents: focus on more efficient chips and use the water cooling space for battery and other useful elements.

It does work! The heat is way more spread out over the phone and if you make the software work with the hardware it can make a nice difference
I think we should keep an open mind. This really could be ground breaking if it is combined with the Solid State Active Cooling that was showcased at CES earlier this year.

Earlier on this morning I watched a video on this exact phone on the LTT channel. Funnily enough OnePlus asked Linus *NOT* to do deep diagnostics text on the phone, so he did it anyway lol 😉
Great video. I would like to see a round mounting point on the camera platform so videographers could screw on Cpl and variable ND filters. Now that would be helpful or On a clip that can cover all of the cameras especially the Samsung Galaxy S23 ultra.
Especially for more demanding devices for compute like VR headsets, this could be useful. Not as it is under a glass case with low heat radiation. But the use of piezoelectric pumps to flow water with low power, no moving parts and low size - that's helpful when there's a decent method to get heat out of the system.
Let people try. It's never a time to stop. If they shipped an unfinished or faulty product then you can term it as "CRAZY".

LG's rollable phone DID ship. It was production ready when they killed it. Korea-only and less than thousand units but it did ship.
I think the camera bump looks much better in this circle-only style than the wraparound hybrid of the standard Oneplus 11

Well, at least get rid of the bubbles. I’ll also be really interested in hearing how the liquid reacts to cold. Some of us encounter subzero temperatures from time to time, and while no phone likes those, imagine the liquid freezing and bursting the tiny tubes. ☃️

Maybe the bubbles help with temperature expansion, but i think that they are mainly there for the looks. Especially in a concept phone where they can clearly show that the water in there is moving.

From LTT's testing it seemed like it works, but phones are so small that there isn't a lot of surface area to saturate with heat. Water cooling is probably a better option for devices that actually have a fan or more surface area so it would be interesting to see if this could be useful in a gaming laptop for example.
my favorite concept phone (wasn’t mentioned here) is the Mi Mix Alpha from Xiaomi. it was mostly all display front and back.

Concept phones aren’t just the end result of research and development, but they are part of it. One thing they are researching is public interest in certain concepts. That phone this year with the matte screen is a perfect example, they want to see how much buzz it will make to see if it’s worth pursuing it any further
One of the best concepts for phones was the razer oh could be attached to a laptop body at the trackpad. That would power the entire laptop. If phones become powerful enough (theyre almost there) that could be a great feature.
THAT ROLLABLE concept is super nice!!!
R&D is also to put the company in a good position if an idea was to take off and puts it in contention. Imagine if meta takes off and you don't have anyone who can take advantage of it, you're on the back foot already.

It should have small wings to make it more aerodynamic, which is important in daily use.
I feel like it’s the same as concept cars, it may not be commercially viable, but it does push the boundaries of the industry and can put some very creative ideas out there and lead to meaningful innovations
The problem with this “cryo flux” and why it sounds like it will barely make a difference is that it doesn’t actively cool. All liquid does is move heat around, you’d still need a fan or radiator to extract the heat from the phone. Without that you’re heavily limited
For the matte display: you can buy matte screen protectors. They look AMAZING on any phone and are very thin, so you more or less feel the glass underneath.

I actually think the RIZR is a more interesting rollable than the Oppo concept because of its small size. The back panel also works as a cover display like for the Flips and Razrs. There will obviously be durability concerns. The part that rolls up looks very flimsy as many pointed out. But I think this concept already made foldables look very boring and outdated. Rollables can remove a crease.
If this ever comes to the mass market, it will be my next phone. But it's just a concept. I remember seeing foldable and rollable screens back in CES 2011. We didn't get the curved displays about a year after the Samsung's YOUM announcement in early 2014. Then foldables by 2019. We could be waiting for a while for this next generation RIZR. Rollables can be the new gen for sliders like the OG RIZR, Z9, LG Chocolate, Nokia N95, etc.
I currently still use a Razr 5G next to a Flip 3, iPhone SE 2022, iPhone X, and Pixel 3. But my sim is inside that Razr because I prefer using it as a phone the most even if I prefer my Flip 3 more as an overall device. Motorola and Nokia have the best reception and call quality. Looks like my next phone will continue to be a stylish and pocketable Motorola.

The concept phones are the one's keeping it interesting it shows how much effort is put to make the consumers buy their products and it's always interesting. If the "concept" of multiple camera's on a phone didn't hit we may not have seen them, same for fold and so many other innovations in tech and yeah type c charging port in an iPhone isn't a "concept"😂😂

For the sake of imagination and inspiration I hope companies never stop showing prototypes and concept phones, cars or tech in general!
It wouldn't surprise if one or another engineer has been "influenced" by seeing one of those concepts in detail and developed something cool that actually comes to market!
The pop-up-camera was a cool thing to do on a Xiaomi Mi 9T, I think ... and with those "ultra" or "plus" models today for 1000 bucks there would be the enough room and money to do that again.
If you like the idea of a matte screen, you can ger a polyurethane protective film on your screen. They can be matte.
It's cheap, you can always go back to glossy and replacement and servicing isn't an issue. The downsides of limited brightness and contrast is still there though.

Hydrogel is a different material from what I was referring to, but yeah they do make protective films out of it as well
Full color eInk is definitely the coolest. Might buy if in the market for a phone and available.

I don’t think they should stop. Companies push the boundaries of smart phones, which lead us to the phones we have today. So, I see no problem in a company getting good PR for their efforts and pushing the market forward. Some tech is just too early, but may eventually make it to the market. Most of the models you showed were in the last 2-3 years. Maybe we’ll see them in the market in 5+ years because of the R&D done already.
