      Hi Zac! Can you please do a video with tips to prevent dog snapping at other dogs? My 11 year old chihuahua barks and try to attack every dog she sees when we walk her on a leash, while in a doggy park without the leash she behaves normally, not super friendly with other dogs but at least not barking. She doesn’t bark at people on our walks. I would appreciate any advice! Thank you!

      Hey, Zak! I have a question: I have a 120lb intact male boxer, 2yrs old - another year he’ll probably be 135-140 once the neck shoulders and haunches fully are fully filled out. He is not aggressive or verbal whatsoever. He is extremely playful and curious. He has never snapped at another dog before. However, other dogs snap at him - A LOT of other dogs, when he is not displaying any sign of aggression, mere proximity often sets it off. It’s nuts! I am just curious if you have encountered this. He plays well in large groups with ALL sizes of dogs, but eventually gets snapped at just being near to or sniffing, not even touching the other animal. Is it merely that they sense the significantly higher levels of testosterone? More energy? The perception that he is simply a very large dog? Have you seen this before? Thank you.

      Positive reinforcement doesn't work here. Look at the end, he never removed the muzzle because he knew that the dog will bite still. There is no follow up where his technique worked. It was just sponsored video from the website. All he did was feed the dog and say, hey he will be fixed as long as you feed em.

      @@khanfinanceacademy7202 - I am going to be generous and NOT accuse you of being stupid. What I suspect is that you did not actually watch the video properly, or listen to what Zak George was saying. At no point did he suggest that a single session of training could cure this type of behaviour - training is a process not a single event. It is this incorrect concept of training that makes me angry with TV programmes like Cesar Milan's. This is not a condemnation of him, or his methods, but a critique of the way his methods are presented to the public. We see a family with a problem dog - Cesar Milan goes in and hey presto - in 5 minutes we have a perfect dog - this is utter bullshit and leads to the sort of comment you have made.
      I have a fear reactive dog and have been working with trainers who use positive reinforcement methods similar to Zak's - and they do work. However, it takes months - if not years - of hard work - and is a slow process. Please tell me your alternative methods - perhaps you would punish the dog for being frightened - because that always works doesn't it?

      @@honeychurchgipsy6 I never said that in single setting he or ANYONE can fix a dog's behavior. Of course Cesar Millan has a TV show and you are stupid if you believe anything on TV. When I said he never showed the result, I meant re-visit and show that he was corrected and how long it took etc. I personally highly doubt Zak's method will fix the dog. However, I do believe Zak or any positive reinforcement works for positive behavior or something you want from dog, but if you want your dog to stop something, positive reinforcement has never worked for me, and I have seen many dogs from friends and family who misbehave and never got corrected even after positive reinforcement from trained individual. I always had "aggressive" breeds or breeds that require experienced owners. I never EVER hit my dog. I think hitting a dog is worst thing you can do for you and the dog because he will never trust you. But I do use negative reinforcement like strong No for wrong behavior, and it had always worked. I walk my German Shepherds without leash in busy area and never had an accident in 20 years and my new puppy who is 3 months old already learned most commands and manners.

    • @honeychurchgipsy6
      @honeychurchgipsy6 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      @@khanfinanceacademy7202 - you, and others on this thread, show a woeful lack of understanding about the methods used by Zak, and other, science based, modern trainers. Positive reinforcement uses methods that are shown to work by research, and they can be very successful for reactive dogs such as the one in this video.
      And you DID say that Zak had failed because he had not removed the muzzle, because he knew the dog would still bite. Sounds to me very much as if you expected him to have miraculously cured the dog of all its aggression in a short, 10 minute, session. Just as if, despite your denials, you had been watching too much Cesar Milan type nonsense. Please do not try to deny that that is what you said/thought - your words are there for all to read.
      Training a fear reactive dog takes months or even years - I know because I have one and we are currently working on many of her issues with trainers similar to Zak: she has made massive progress but still has moments when she is frightened and reacts badly.
      I think the problem with people such as yourself is that you cannot get over the idea that a dog is deliberately behaving badly and therefore requires chastising or even punishing. Understanding why dogs behave as they do helps us to find solutions to that behaviour. In no way is positive reinforcement training a system of giving the dog its own way, being soft on the dog, or ignoring bad behaviour - if you think it is you need to learn more.
      The differences between modern, reward based, training methods and old fashioned, punishment based systems, can be summed up with a look at heel/lead training. Traditional methods may use anything from a sharp tug on the lead to a choke chain or even a shock collar. Modern methods may use a special harness, or a method where the trainer stands still every time the dog pulls, and continues walking when the lead goes slack: this is continued until the dog understands that pulling doesn't get them anywhere. Treats, and positive words can also be used in conjunction with either method to inform the dog when it is behaving correctly.

      @TheRowanAnimal_Lover muzzles are temporary training tools for the safety of all parties involved while the handler teaches the alternative behaviors and the dog becomes more reliable without it. It is not designed to teach a dog to not bite, it’s a precaution (from bites, mauling, and liabilities such as). I implore you to look up Tyler Muto’s dog training videos on aggressive dogs and muzzle work.

      @TheRowanAnimal_Lover woo... there’s so much wrong with “It’s Me or the Dog”. Victoria Stilwell’s show is NOT a good source for dog training information. It relied heavily on reenforcing undesired behaviors for the sake of good tv, while bashing other balanced methods making owners believe there’s only one way to train dogs. She had a very “it’s my way or the highway” attitude not always considering what’s best for the dog. I used to love her show and watch it religiously, then I went to school, studied, and became a trainer. She never delved into the root causes of the dog’s behavior or their psychology, which would genuinely help the dog, never showing the full process and extent of the training or her methods. She often used “quick fix” tools and methods instead of properly counter conditioning the dogs, often flooding or moving the dog along too fast, escalating already bad situations. I will say her training criteria NOW is more accurately updated and way better than what she put out in her show. It was all for entertainment and I do not recommend relying on it for any form of training information. That being said even Victoria uses muzzles and recommends her clients to muzzle train their dogs, especially those truly aggressive or with bite histories. It’s not a damaging tool but very useful.

      Ash - please read my comments above they are replies to Monte Wolf and @Black Viper Gaming. I also have a large, fear reactive dog, and have been working with trainers who use similar methods to Zak. We were told straight away that it may never be possible to 'cure' Clemmy, which was a bit of a blow but at least it gave us realistic expectations and has enabled us to understand that we need to manage her behaviour and utilise every available training moment. Basically, every time a person walks by, or comes to the door etc. is a training opportunity. She's doing well but we have moments just like the one at the beginning of this video - although Clemmy doesn't try to bite/snap she just barks.

      @@DF-te2vm - how do you know if the person understands? I would not leave things to chance - instead try explaining to them how to be safe. I like the way you don't try and get an instant result with aggressive discipline and you use slow positive affirmation for better behaviour. My last rescue border collie took 18 months to settle in and behave more socially acceptably and he was still not perfect, but I also made the world fit around him by avoiding unnecessary interactions with anyone. He had 9 years of horrible abuse with his previous owner so I had to settle for good enough not perfect. Having him from 9 years old onwards to 12 and a half when he died from an aneurysm, he was just starting to get there and learning to trust some people more than others. He was the most beautiful dog but the previous owner had treated him terribly he didn't trust anyone. Point is you just can't turn a dogs behaviour around in a minute. Sometimes it can take many many tries or even many months or longer. It's all about rebuilding their trust in the world. Best of luck and never give up for your doggy!

    This was really helpful for me. My GSD does almost the exact same thing, though maybe more unpredictably. The other day, he took treats from someone, no problem, then proceeded to do the lunge nip (I think the person was too straight on and close and my boy only noticed after he finished the treat). And he definitely has territorial home behavior. It's really difficult to train out, because it DOES require that contact and people don't usually want to interact with an unfriendly dog. It does sometimes feel impossible. We can walk by a person on a trail and usually have no problem, but he does not like to be pet by strangers, though he doesn't care if it's somewhere he doesn't notice (like they pet his butt as he passes by at the dog park). It's also difficult because people expect your dog to be okay with pets. Luckily, most people ask, but some really go for it without doing so even on leash when reactivity tends to be the worst.

      Defiently get a cage mussle. Just to be safe. You dont want to find yourself in legal trouble or have to put him down. And going to public places like a mal or park you can walk by many strangers. Let him focus on something in your hand, or guide him with the leash. Play in parks with a leash and get ever so slowly closer to many diffrent people. Do short, uneventful meetings of diffrent kinds. Walking by, small verbal greeting. Droping a treat in passing. Sneezeing. Picking up a paper. Tapping a small stick softly.
      Let strangers become something that can do good or suprising small things without much interaction. Desensetise him like that and maybe buld curriostery. And do that with many people. Get a bit closer bit by bit. And give clear direction.

    Question. You stated "when a dog is able to take commands from a stranger, that is a good sign that they are in a calm State of mind" I have practice this with friends, and my friend was able to get my dog to do a few commands but within just a few moments after, he snapped. What can you gather from that?

    My dog is 2 and grew up during Covid (born October 2019) and she is extremely aggressive I think. We can basically never take her out in public. She tries to bite at other people and other dogs, she won’t ever stop barking, she even tries to get aggressive with my family and I when we get near her stuff or food...and because of all this, she’s unsocialized... it’s concerning me quite a lot. Especially since she is half Great Pyrenees (known to be protective guard dogs...)

    • @jeanvignes
      @jeanvignes 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You definitely need the advice of a GOOD professional trainer. Covid puppies/dogs are under-socialized, but they don't have to be UN-socialized. Try a basket muzzle. Try walking with muzzle + leash + harness as seen in this video. Try inviting over well-vaccinated and careful friends/family to meet her when she's muzzled & well-controlled on her harness, or in her crate. It takes TIME. My super-shy guy is first introduced to people by having them come into the living room with me while he's in his crate. We sit near the crate (4 to 5 feet away), at first, to give him time to observe and smell the visitor, and realize that they're not there to hurt anyone, just have a nice visit. He eventually relaxes, maybe even dozes, with the stranger in "his" territory with MY permission. It helps him realize that I am in charge of security, not him.

      Try your best to train this negative behavior out of her but if not get rid of her. The life she is living does not sound like a good one bc of her behavior and owning a dog like that is not worth all the suffering you will go through because of how aggressive she is. She is also a danger to others around her and I'm sure you would not want someone to get hurt or even, in the case of a small child or other animal, being killed. I am sorry that you are having to deal with this, it can be hard to say goodbye to a pet forever but it is something that must be done if the situation is not healthy for you or them.

    Great video. My dog has never been physically aggressive before, but she does give warning growls/barks, so I always keep an eye on her reaction to strangers and other dogs when out in public anyway and am selective with which dogs can approach her. I've had her for 4 years, and she's the most calm, tolerant, and gentle dog I've ever known, she adores people, especially calm, considerate kids once she gets to know them, but it's a good precaution to take with any dog, especially a shy one like she is (she got proper socialization a fair bit as a puppy but I think she's naturally timid being a Chihuahua, and she was the runt of the litter and got literally run over by her siblings as a pup so it was hard to boost her confidence).

    I have tried socializing my dog with men, but he ended up being wary of them and now he barks at most of the men we see during walks.
    I think this is due to the fact that, when he was still very young, plenty of people would touch him, even roughly, while passing by, without EVER asking to me first.
    Men especially liked literally grabbing his head or nose, sometimes they would even slap his face and butt!
    I hated it so much, I tried my best to be alert and telling people to back off (gaining the reputation of being the *nicest* dog owner of the neighborhood 🙄), but they just kept doing it!

    I agree, if someone has the time to safely train their dogs through their reactivity issues, by all means, take all the time in the world. But time is important for a lot of real world scenarios. Aggressive dogs in shelter don't have that time; neither do dogs that were wrongly assessed as aggressive.
    Dogs with families with kids, other animals, the elderly, or disabled don't have months and years to wait around for their dog to change. Sometimes owners shouldn't have to put up with certain types of behavioral issues, that could be fixed in minutes or days through a balanced approach, that positive only training would take months or years to do.
    Positive only can work and does work for most things if given enough time; but time isn't an abundant resource when the county is going to take your dog away from you in the next 30 days.
    Also, the shelters are filled with dogs that went through Positive Only training; whether the owners couldn't devote the time, or the specific trainer just didn't have the skills, or if Positive Only wouldn't work on that particular dog, the shelters are filled with dogs that have gone through Positive Only training.
    A dog trainer should have every tool available to them, not just tools deemed "positive".
    A balanced approach is usually best for behavioral issues. Mostly positive works for puppies and basic obedience training. And I say "mostly positive" because even Positive Only trainers use negative reinforcement, they just don't perceive it to be "negative" and play mental gymnastics and semantics.

      TOOK THE WORDS OUT MY MOUTH. Don't choke your dog to the ground or get up his ass but let him or her know what she is doing is unacceptable and "taking the treat away" doesnt always do that it takes leash correction, diversion, redirection, AND positive reinforcement cause when you get dogs that had positive "your way all the time" then when its to train them they will have the mentality of "im gonna get it anyway so whats the point, mom or dad lets me have anything i want you arent the boss!". I had a dog snap at me cause the owner never told her dog no for anything so now he pees on everything bites at guest and shows aggression and frustration when told no. When the small dog grabbed my arm to dominance hump I quickly took my arm away and changed my energy. Well that ticked him off and he was very upset and snappy with me. Eventually he respected my space and sat calmly in my lap but it took changing my body language and verbal correction. And I never had to lay a hand on him like his owners were trying to do at home.

      Amalgam80 - you seem to think training is an instant thing - it is not - training is about every single behaviour you exhibit around your dog - every minute of every day. No short cuts I'm afraid - either accept that or don't get a dog. There are no instant fixes for aggressive behaviour other than death - sorry but that is the truth - if you think you can punish a fear reactive dog into being gentle you are wrong.

      @@honeychurchgipsy6 Maam I just congratulated you on my other comment. I know my typing is terrible but the story im telling is a dog I was training was unfixed aggressive, the parents was hitting the dog to reprimand him and when he would try to bite or dominate guests no action would be taken. I would say what I demonstrated was pretty positive. He went to grab my arm and hump it I jerked my hand into to me and tensed with a short "Ssss" sound and he paced around me and growled to grab my arm but I kept my body language the same and he calmed and I rewarded him, while his mom told me to smack him. Positive reinforcement is not a bad thing and I have said this time and time again but every dog is different. Its not that I "dont know what it is" I was just sharing what I had to do for this shitzu that most would argue " That isnt positve cause you took you arm away and made a short scary noise and that can damage the dogs trust and thats not positive" When a dog doesnt want another dog in their face playing they puff and swing their head away and the puppy or other dog bothering that dog will calm down cause the dog moving away is showing agitation. @@lilkittyanime - I still think, from reading your comment/reply that you do not fully understand positive reinforcement training, and I stand by my words that, in your other comment, you were misrepresenting it - which is why I accused you of a straw man fallacy( this is where someone misrepresents something/someone and then proceeds to show how/why they/it is wrong) But they are attacking a misrepresentation (a straw man) and not the actual man/concept.
      Anyway, you seem like a decent person who genuinely loves dogs and probably has some ability to train difficult ones. Watch more Zak videos, and check out the science behind them, and why dominance/Alpha/wolf pack ideas are a myth, and don't work, and I suspect you will become an awesome trainer.
      Oh, and whilst you are right that we need to use methods that work with each, individual dog, there are basic concepts that can always be used, and that will work unless a dog is unwell mentally: dominating a fearful dog will never work in the long run; they require love, firmness and consistent behaviour from us. Sooooo, basically, bribe the dog into tolerance with treats. But what happens when you run out of treat or don't have any in the first place?

    Hello, Zak! Your videos are great, and all the advice has been really insightful for my family and our wonderful 14-year-old Bichon mix, AJ. We've had him since puppyhood, and he's grown into a calm, mellow dog, who is mostly non-reactive. (I have complete trust in him for most situations). He's an amazing dog, intuitive, and has never given us serious issues.
    Unfortunately, though he wasn't properly socialized as a pup, and while he's very fine with people, he doesn't like interacting too much with other dogs. He's had numerous experiences with dogs staying in the house, but has jealousy issues when I give too much affection to one.
    For example, I'm playing with one for about six minutes. The visiting dog happily licks, rolls over and plays with me. Around the 11 minute mark of play, Aj then starts to growl and bark excessively, then come over and sniff them.
    We know not to make it a big deal when a new dog comes to stay, and always make an effort make sure Aj still feels respected in his space. And this behaviour generally gets better after a week. But this is still Aj's expected reaction when a dog does something he doesn't like in our home. It never progresses farther than that, but it's definitely a behavior I went to address.
    Especially since we really want to add a new puppy addition to the family and have our hearts set on finding a Chow mix early next year.
    Do you have any advice on how to handle this situation?

    This is a really helpful video. This really helped me understand and figure out how to help with a dog at my shelter. Her name is Teyla and she is a Beagle Mix who is very reactive towards other dogs, and she is an active and playful dog who is always ready to "go, go, go". When she sees another dog, she would lunge at the dog, barking a lot, sometimes her barks are accompanied by growling. She even exhibits these behaviors when she is inside her kennel at the shelter, when she sees another dog pass by. She has a blanket covering most of her view of the outside due to her reactiveness towards other dogs. Is this a helpful thing for dog reactivity?

    My dachshund growls at me if I try to take something he grabbed in his mouth he snaps and bites at that as well as when we try to take him away from my mum and if we pick him up

      he’s resource guarding (regarding him snapping and biting when you try to take something he grabbed). zak made a video on this but if you’re still dealing with this, you can take a treat and lure him away (make him do a trick and then give the treat after you lure him away). you should then be able to get whatever he has away from him.

    • @sebastianzuniga4004
      @sebastianzuniga4004 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Aka the problem with positive reinforcement training which is the only thing this guy preaches. Dogs will see you as a resource rather than a leader. Which will lead to resource guarding. Even if you have treats most outside stimulus will trigger their instincts and override compliance to you. This guy virtually didn’t do anything for this dog

    I love that video.... My husky snapping at stragers and dogs like almost all the time, there are a few strangers that she reacted different, like she knows them whole her life and loves them to pet her.... Many people wants just to pet her and same as the dog in your video she is not that kind of a dog that likes or comes to pet her even to me.... my husband and I got here when she was 9 weeks old so I started to excersise with Your videos with her and she is almost 1 year old now. I watch your videos over a year and yes it was before I had my Hope 🐺. We walk her out 4 times a day that she has enough of walks also riding a bike with her and excersise regularly go to the dog park and we also completed 10 weeks dog training school with quite different approach than Yours but I like Your method most ... I just wish we could change her approach to strangers.... Her sister is same as the owner/breeder told me, also when we seen puppies for the first time their mom was trying to grab my hand with her teeth not as aggressive as the dog in your video but still she tried. I wonder if it is even possible to change Hope behavior? Or it is genetic 😳 anyway love to watch your videos..... It is a huge help to me 😊 thank You so much

      I own a very aggresive deaf dog, who I love the most. But lately due the
      Lack of knowledge I'd never socialized it when it was a puppy but now hes become a totally aggressive, due to that my parents want to give away him. But I just cant, it would mean the end of my world if someone takes him away from me .

      I have a dog similar to this he's only 10 months though. Try clicker training, it can be very time consuming and your hands will be full but it's very worth it. I buy my dog hot dogs and cut them into small slices (its his favorite and they're inexpensive) before you do anything get your dog and the treats and the clicker and make him sit and just give him the treats (they should be high value) and every time he eats it click him, right as he eats it. Do it over and over again maybe 10ish times so he gets the idea. I take my dog everyday into Home Depot since they're dog friendly (you should get a muzzle to be responsible) you can help your dog adjust to that buy putting a high value treat into the end of so they willing put their face into it. Praise hi heavily while its on and then take it off and ignore him, Do that about five times in a row. When you bring him to whatever place you choose let someone stick their closed fist out to him not staring him in the eyes but being relaxed and as soon as he starts to smell them treat him immediately and give him a click and some praise. DON'T let it go on long enough for him to aggress, i've always heard the more times they get the chance to do so the harder it is to train it out. Do this as much as you can without overwhelming or exhausting you dog. we typically just try to meet about 6/7 people a day. I hope he improves!:)
