This song contains one of the most classic rock and roll riffs ever laid down!!! Song was written at 5 am in morning, the three were all frustrated over not coming up with any new songs, but Jack grabbed his bass and played the first few notes, and Pete Brown, who was looking out the window, said, :It's getting near dawn...... and the rest is history!!!
@@paulaandrolini5948 I recall hearing in the Ginger Baker documentary, "Beware of Mr. Baker", Baker said Jack Bruce played the song and Baker said, "That's terrible" and added the 4-6 (?) Bolero.
Three of the greatest individual musicians on their particular instruments ever. They inspired many people to pick up and play guitar, bass or drums trying to emulate them. When they played together it was truly magical. I remember the first time I heard this particular song on the radio. It was electrifying and I had to rush out and get a copy of Disraeli Gears as quickly as I could. Now only Eric is left. RIP Ginger. RIP Jack. The music lives on!
Pretty amazing as, apart from a rehearsal the day before, they hadn't played together for twenty-five years! Just magic! So glad we have these precious moments preserved. Miss you, Mr Bruce! Your life and joy are still with us. Rest in peace after a full life of giving.
+Kerrie Redgate Precious moments? Baker and Bruce are soaking up the very last attention they will ever get as musicians on a big stage and Clapton (filling stadiums at this time as a solo act) looks like he's only there to pay off a debt - or because his manager told him he had to. These guys were a flash in the pan - a HUGE flash, admittedly, but they didn't really gel in the customary sense of what makes a band. There's a reason - lots of them, actually - they split up so soon, and never got together afterward - they basically couldn't stand one another...
+Tablature Butler Ginger is still playing live , despite his back problems. He's in his 70s. 25 years between playing together as a unit: I'd like to see you try, honestly. One rehearsal the day before: very few bands could make that work (believe me, I know!), and at their ages! I guess you weren't there in the '60s. Hearing these guys again is magic for those of us who remember the impact this stuff had on us back then. There was nothing like it. Cream was hardly a flash in the pan! It's called Legacy.
Kerrie Redgate Sorry if I harshed your mellow - I was in fact there when the flash was blinding - saw them at Winterland. Loved them then and their old tunes now. However, their mutual antipathy is the stuff of legend and that too is integral to their legacy. That they could still play their hits isn't surprising in the least - they didn't play off one another - then or in this video - they played as three separate musicians playing the same song at once - and God knows they've been playing them for those 25 intervening years. After their inevitable splintering, they went separate musical ways - and Clapton intentionally sought out more collaborative partners he could relate to on a personal level as a palate cleanser - the Cream experience was actually very bitter and traumatic for him. If you want to be swept away by rosy nostalgia, that's your business - I just look at things through a different lens, I suppose...
+Tablature Butler A very different lense. If you know the histroy of the band so well then you must understand that they were not boyhood friends like the Beatles and Stones were. Each was established as a true expert at their instruments. Naturally ego goes with that. As far as a flash in the pan, that is just pure ignorance. You do recall that Wheels of Fire was the FIRST platinum album. Hardly the creation by a flash in the pan band.
Usually on a reunion show or tour, the band gets the money and sounds just ok, but here I can tell that the band is really trying hard to sound like they did in their prime, especially Jack Bruce. They end up sounding mind-blowing, and not just for a reunion, for a live performance from any era of Cream. I can tell that they really had fun playing together for the first time in a long time!
This band was the classic definition of what was later referred to as a "super group" - every one of them superstars in their right! And they blended together incredibly well...
Bravo to that performance…. with only one day of rehearsal after 25 years, I thought it was fantastic. Ginger Baker was awesome and the cigarette in the mouth was a nice touch.

After not being together for 25 years and a one day rehearsal the day before. Wow still a special band. I miss these days of rock when almost every band was unique with there own style and sound.
I've been watching a few of these RRHF performances ,( one leading me to the next...) and I think Cream "creamed" most of them . I know most of these musicians , who are being inducted , likely haven't played together for awhile , but wow .... great performance . I felt bad for Chris Hillman during The Byrds RRHF induction performance , because they were not at their best that night but Cream definitely rocked the house . Loved this . RIP Jack Bruce

Just have to say the 3 men Rock and Roll Band of the Ages and was very lucky to have met Sir Eric Clapton and talk with him for at least half an hour it was a dream come true!!!

There were a few memorable sounds from my childhood. One was the wailing cry of Jimi Hendrix guitar. The other was the booming -rat-a-tat-tat from the drumming of Ginger Baker. He was a man on a mission and we heard him loud and clear. RIP Ginger Baker!
Saw Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker when they played with in the under appreciated but highly influential Graham Bond Organisation back in the 60s, this was around the same time as seeing Eric Clapton then unknown with The Yardbirds and later on a regular basis with John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers. Happy days.
My God, 4 or 5 decades later these guys still kick ass with this song. I remember being 12 when it hit the airwaves and being blown away by the Clapton-Bruce heaviest of heavy riffs. An immortal classic song by the Titans of music.

Its in my top ten riffs of all time!
You are so right. I know how Clapton loves the Stratocaster, but a large number of fans would have loved to hear the SG. Years after this video, on the reunion gigs, the same thing happened. Clapton had said that they had rehearsed, using the old gear but I don't know what excuse he had for not using at least the 335 or the LesPaul. Can anybody remember what he had said about this ?
+john gafa' Yes the excuse I heard was that they didn't like the sound??? I really believe it's that they like the sound of the money coming from Fender, DW, etc. Remember Ginger used to play Ludwig Drums, now he plays DW.
Sparkletune Official too cool man. Kind of a historic piece of equipment. I remember when EC started using those amps. Super beefy and just dimed, no effects : ) Not sure if he still uses them though. Would you know?
Unfortunately he doesn't use this kind of sound OR gear these days. People change and he's made those choices over the years. My qualm is that he should consider the older fans and humor them just a little.
This music will always be capable of sending electrified shivers of frisson and bliss and energy whenever I hear it, and if I think about it hard enough. The impact this music had on, well essentially, EVERYTHING that came AFTER IT, it can almost make start to well up. This is pure heart and soul shining Rock n Roll! Baker Clapton Bruce, CREAM. The creators and trailblazers of what would become early hard rock and proto-heavy-metal in later years. Blessed to have been on the planet and been able to see Eric as many times as I have, -- wipes tear -- ahh, * sigh * it's going to suck when our heroes are all gone, but thankfully, the music never stops! :D
Ginger said in an interview from 2005 that Cream was not really Rock and Roll, that he and Jack were jazz players and Eric more of a blues player. That's about right.
Hi Roger. Sorry to disturb and no ‘name drop’ intended but your comment was spot on. Pete Brown their songwriter said the same thing to me years ago, that Jack and Ginger were really jazzers and Eric a blues player. And he of all people must’ve known! Take care wherever ur and mind this Covid thing, Stu X
❤ 3 brilliant musicians all in their own elements of Cream some of the greatest music out there still 30 years after their induction to the RRHOF. Thank you for sharing your talent with us. ❤
Right on, Clapton said during the 2005 cream reunion at the Royal Albert Hall that playing with cream really tested his abilities. Definitely hear a much more difficult level for him.
Yep 100% agree. After say 1973 its like he didnt really have anything worthwhile left to say musically. Makes me wonder if Hendrix would have gone the same way. The songwriting, performance & output of a really talented group is almost always better than that of solo artist. For no other reason than its exceedingly rare for an individual to be a master of songwriting, composition, performance and production. They are all unique disciplines IMO. Claptons strength is defintely performance composition is fairly good, but his songwriting is his big downfall. As it is with many, many very talented guitarists. He was really really helped by Jack and Ginger being equals in the room with him.
R.i.P. Ginger and Jack. You'll forever be remembered as the legends you were!!!

Yes, and add the chemistry between them
Can't argue with fact. When they were on nobody could touch them. And I mean nobody.
"Arguably" indeed.
Arguably is accurate cause really... Jack Bruce is great - but Jaco Pastorius is THE monster of bass playing.

When I was at Soldano a couple years ago I got to play through one of the cabs EC is using there. They're still in Mike's place.
My qualm is that he should consider the older fans and humor them just a little.
i saw them at the Grande ballroom in Detroit MI on their final tour before they broke up. Unbelievable, the energy.
Still my favorite song of all time....
R.I.P. Ginger Baker, R.I.P. Jack Bruce
What a great sound. Still beats any music that is out there today. WE were spoiled- didn't realize that rock and roll was peaking back in this era.
Cream brought something out of Clapton that his other projects fell well short of.
So true..
Yeah, a Marshall stack and huge tone. For me there is no Clapton outside Cream.
Two other musicians who didn't hold him so highly. They were both top shelf themselves.
A stellar performance. May Jack Bruce rest in peace. Wonderful bass player and terrific voice.
Their voices actually sound really good
How cool was this!!! All the bands that followed and those in the audience to see Cream perform and sound amazing.
The greatest bass line ever written. (Originally done by Jack on a Cello)
I love that Ginger is wearing his Masters of Reality-Sunrise on the Sufferbus shirt. Priceless.
