  • Create your own PNGs and SVGs in Inkscape, a completely free design software. I create most of my designs in Inkscape and then upload them to Cricut Design Space for cutting projects such as diy farmhouse signs, tshirts, or decals.

    Excellent video. Do you have another where you put in multiple colored items and text. I did my text in inkscape had all the individual svgs and want to combine them if that makes sense and add an offset to it for a sticker. If you have any tips they are appreciated.

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I have several Inkscape tutorials I will do one on offsets for you. The way I do it is to change my text/object to a path (under Path), ungroup all the letters, and then while they are still selected select Union (under Path). Then you can scroll down to Linked Offset to create the offset, click on the little node that will appear to drag it out to the size you want. Then you can change the color of the offset you created to white to create a white border around your image or text. Hope that makes sense I will film and post something this week👍🏼

      Christy Cain - The Appalachian Home can I ask you a question? I know it may be one of preference but, I have been doing research on different Cricut machines and Silhouette Camo Machines and I just really like your opinion on which would be better to purchase and user friendly. I want to make T-shirts, transfers and farmhouse signs to give as gifts and set up at my local farmers market. I thought maybe the Cricut Maker then I am not very familiar with how to do anything as far as like making signs and I know that it is a matter of watching TH-cam and such. I guess I just want your honest opinion.😊 Thank You, so much! I absolutely love your channel and I am always so excited when I seen that you have uploaded another video!

      @@theresagross3523 Thank you I am so glad you enjoy my channel! I have used both the silhouette (cameo) and cricut machines, but have more experience with cricut. I like both but I will give you some pros and cons at least that I have found. The silhouette design program is a little better and allows you to do more and that is why I do most of my designs in inkscape when i use cricut. However I like Cricut products and use them (mats) even with Silhouette. I have had less problems with my Cricut than the Silhouette but maybe thats user error lol. I would say I prefer Cricut for vinyl cutting and definitely LOVE the Maker it is awesome and hard to beat. I have also cut stickers and things like that on both and still prefer Cricut. I already knew how to use Cricut when I got Silhouette and the learning curve is prob about the same i would say. I think you can download free design software from both machines, you might test and see which one you prefer that way? I think I am bias 😊 so definitely research more on Silhouette! I hope that helps you!!

    Hello Christy,
    Thankyou for the tutorial, very helpful. I do have a question , if I wanted to save the image you made as a gift tag svg, would I highlight the box including the pink square with the words and save as an svg? If I wanted 12 tags on a page to cut in Cricut design space do I save one image or 12 on a page and then save as svg? Thankyou again!

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! I’m so glad you liked the tutorial! When saving as svg you don’t have to highlight the box or anything, it will automatically save everything on your canvas. Just be sure to save as a Plain svg and not an Inkscape svg. You can just save the single image and once you upload it to design space you can duplicate it there as many times as you need. If you duplicate it in inscape before saving it could take a while to load into design space. Hope that helps!

      @Happinessiscrossstitching 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christy Cain - The Appalachian Home Hi Christy, Thankyou. Just one more query, if I was selling gift tags as svg is it best practice to just load one svg or would it be correct to send both, i.e. one on it’s own and a full sheet?

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      stitchingfairy If you are selling a set of tags specifically you could go just make a full page ready to print.👍🏻

      Hi. For some reason my cricut design space would not load SVGs. Even ones I purchased. So I used pngs until I fixed the issue. Also my website won’t let me post svg files as free downloads for viewers but I can post pngs for download. I am working on putting my svg files on my shop tho!

    Ok sorry total newbie question coming...why would you want to use Inkscape instead of Design space or Silhouette studio? Easier? Lovvveeeee your channel!

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question! I use Inkscape because it allows you to have more control over your designs. I can pretty much create anything or re-create anything. Inkscape has a lot of neat features like curving the corners of triangles, rectangles, and squares. You can also create text on an arc. There are just so many more things you can do. Also once you create a design in Design Space, it can't be published as a downloadable file. You can share the picture of it thru Cricut but you can't share the file. I share a lot of my files, and Inkscape files can be shared as SVG's and PNG's to sell or for free downloads like on my website. Thank you so much for watching my channel!!

    • @AppalachianHomeCo

      Hi thank you so much! I found the script font, called Gybella, from thehungryjpeg.com. It was only $1 to purchase for personal and commercial use. The other font is called Chickadee and I purchased it from Creative Market for $3, for personal and commercial use. I haven't researched if there are free versions of these fonts, but you can try Dafont.com, it had lots of free fonts for personal use. I just downloaded them to my computer. You will need to extract all files if they are in zip form. After that, I right click on the font file (which will be true type or open type, I always select true type) and click on "Install for all users". That way all the fonts will show up in any program I am using. Hope that helps!

      Hi. You would need to trace the design. Go to path, trace bitmap. Select “colors” and put in as many colors as in the design. Select ok and that will create several layers of colors that can be made into an svg. 👍🏻

    Hi! What docoment size is best to use for svg cricut / silhouette ?

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi! I usually try to design an svg in the size I will be using it, but svgs by definition are scalable vector graphics, meaning they can be resized with no loss of quality. So if you don't have a specific size to start with, I would go with say a 6"x6" to 12" x 12" or therebouts, or if you work in pixels, at least 1000 x 1000 pixels, and you should be good to go. Hope that helps!
