I remember this story so well. I started cheerleading around the same time - in 1989 in Houston. I'm the same age as her daughter. My mom told me that she would never do anything like this over cheerleading if I wasn't good enough to get on a squad. It was my dad who went to most of my games. A lot of us are crazy about football and cheer in Texas, but not THAT crazy.

I lived right down the street from the school they attended in Channelview. It wasn't rough back then. Just lots of trucking companies on one rd and across the street was two chemical plants. The neighborhoods were nice and real low crime. I was in my 20s and we were all extremely shocked when this happened.
I guess it's what you get used to. Doing some sightseeing on Google maps show that there are lots of double wide and trailer homes on top of one another with rusting metal roofs. Looks pretty rough to me. The school properties look nice . I think they would have been better off building tall towers to open up land for parks. JMO.
@@rbspider A lot of areas have gone downhill in the last 30 years. That's what happens when job opportunities dry up because the environment for business becomes unsustainable. Plus Hurricane Katrina caused a lot of problems for Houston. I was there in 2011 and there was a lot of gang fighting going on, Houston is the first major city West of New Orleans and many of the displaced poor moved to Houston and as a result they were fighting for control of land, the locals said it was pretty wild.

Why are people with a criminal record not considered credible witnesses, but jailhouse snitches who are motivated to get a reduced sentence are used every chance a prosecutor gets?
Their credibility can be commented on, and it often renders them questionable. The prosecutor (and the defense atty) has to use the evidence that exists, if they need it to make their case.
Channelview used to be full of hard-working people who made decent wages at the nearby petro-chemical plants. Even the older, smaller houses were so neat and tidy. Definitely well cared for. I know because my relatives lived there.
I remember the Holly Hunter one that came out in 1993. Wanda even said herself back then that she wanted Holly Hunter to portray her if they made a movie about the attempted murder(s). People were saying that Wanda reminded them of Holly. I think Wanda read that and agreed.

Skill? In middle school? Shouldn't be try outs at all. Every one who wants to cheer should be in, because at that age, most are just learning it or starting to get good. That's how it was at my middle school.
Would this have happened if cheerleading hadn't been made into such a big deal? If you look at it closely, it's just little girls in skimpy costumes dancing. Ball games are way too hyped anyway, and so are the girls dancing to them. If the kids enjoy playing ball and dancing, then that's just the kids' thing. Adults should be concerned with more important things than kids playing with a ball and little girls in short skirts.
Tonya Harding is still vilified for her part in injuring a competitor in order to eliminate her from the competition. At least she and her co conspirators didn’t go this far

I am a native Texan and attended the well-known Permian High School in Odessa Texas. The one with the movie and a tv series. and yes, back in the day Cheerleading was celebrity status. You were invisible if not a cheerleader or on the Pep Squad. Thank goodness for most Texas towns now days-if you are eligible with your grades and attendance then you simply sign up for cheerleader, Pep and halftime show Dance teams, There are also the girls who can sign up to be football trainers AKA water girls. Its hard work and lots of commitment to be any of these things-But at least now everyone gets a fair chance no matter your looks or your parents bank account. The schools have come a long way since back then on making sure there is an opportunity for all students to be involved with the most important thing in Texas- High school Football !! LOL Oh and I now live in Oklahoma. 😁
The most disappointing thing about this case was that they called it the Texas Cheerleader Murder Plot, when they could have called it Texas Cheerleader Massacre (Plot).
I have a relative who lived in Houston, TX in the late 1990s, and they met TEACHERS who homeschooled! The public schools really were that bad, and the private schools were very expensive, had long waiting lists, and/or were no better. They knew then that this was not where they wanted to raise their kids.
This was tried in the media. It was a very sensational case. It was all over the news and everyone was talking about it at the time. It was big like the OJ case. But just like OJ, the Mendez brothers, and the Scott Peterson cases, I didn't pay any attention to it. I'd have to hear the tapes in order to make any sort of judgement.
The daughter Shanna, has participated in a new documentary and you can hear a lot of the tapes. You can also find them online. It wasn't a good look for Wanda Holloway!
The main issue everyone fails to notice is the term "cheerleader", the "leader" part suggests that they are all leaders, which is impossible and causes friction.
I will never understand why people and humans are like this and do horrible things. Sad Stuff like this is why I fear and worry the world is gonna look like a deserted wasteland in 300 years. :(

I was graduating from college when this all happened. It was so insane then, and it's just as crazy now looking back on it.

This was tried in the media. It was a very sensational case. It was all over the news and everyone was talking about it at the time. It was big like the OJ case. But just like OJ, the Mendez brothers, and the Scott Peterson cases, I didn't pay any attention to it. I'd have to hear the tapes in order to make any sort of judgement.

It's getting worse ..it's amazing how many people I have had entered my life that were awful people..there's lots of horrible people all over the world everywhere. You can't be paranoid, but you just have to be aware of how and where these individuals are and beware ..be careful..
