Look at what happened to the Black Thorns in the Battletech universe. They died during a setting change because the planet they were last on was canonically rendered uninhabitable while they were there in a blurb describing the overall war. They were literally killed by continuity.
Especially considering what would end up happening to Mickey later, after they became Spartans, is just heartbreaking. I can’t believe we traded the best silent protagonist we’ve ever had for this guy…

Fun fact: on new year’s eve of 2023, me and some of my friends from college got bored, so we went and played Halo 3; ODST at one of their houses. We made a bet that we could beat the game before 2024, and through a grueling campaign, a couple of deaths, and a boatload of messing around, we managed to get the credits rolling mere seconds before midnight. That last mission was absolutely insane.

What's worse about his death is that it broke up the team, Buck, Mickey, and Romeo would become Spartans, Dutch would leave the ODSTs and settle down on mars and Mickey would do something that was absolutely horrible and betrayed Alpha-Nine and would join an insurrection movement even though the thing that drove him to do it was actually the Rookie's death, basically spitting on the Rookie's memory in the process.

Yeah, I said he was a hyper lethal ODST some years back on a different video. Sgt.JohnForge, UNSC Marine, is hyper lethal , Sgt. Johnson , Spartan I, maybe hyperlethal, could be. Master Chief , Spartan II, hyper lethal. Noble6, Spartan III, hyperlethal. I heard Agent Locke now Spartan Locke is dead but he might be one as well or that is someone else from the Halo4-5 franchise, maybe Buck idk. Dr.Halsey said there were only 2 that were hyperlethal.
Rookie should of ended up as a spartan IV, probably would be a hyper lethal one as well. Edit: Honesty instead of the rookie becoming a Spartan, I think he would've been a bad ass ONI operative, his detective skills, and intelligence are peak, then he could wear SPI armor like Veta Lopis from Halo Retribution, or maybe he'll be assigned to Kilo-5 with Naomi-010.

I really do believe less is more. I personally feel the original Halo 3 terminals (ALL except the Ill informed lore breaking shitty ones written by Fronk O'Connor) give off a far more wonderful, creepy and cosmic picture of who and what the ancient forerunners (Ancient humans, fckin obviously) must have been. Replacing all that intentional mystery, massive scale intrigue with essentially a fcking court room drama about space Voldemorts trying to turn humans into bionicles fcking pissed me off. So much. I don't care if Steinbeck wrote it.
Its sad when the death isn't the firery hero's end or the noble sacrifice we all expect and hope for with characters we love, its them falling victim to a real situation that we would all believe they would fight out of. For every Sgt. Johnson who had that final moment in the war, right there in the pivotal moments. We have the ones like Rookie and Kat gone in an instant a death that left them powerless to stop it.
Kat was real rough too. There wasn't even time to mourn her. Fuck man Alpha 9 and Noble 6 are tragedies. So heroic though. Man i love the Halo Franchise so much.
When I found out I was so pissed, but the writers at 343 at the time were so hell bent on making their own stuff and sweeping away what Bungie left. I could only imagine if passionate writers had the rookie alive and A9 together as the crew for an alternate Halo 5 searching for chief and Cortana with Rookie being the silent detective piecing everything together.
they have been hell bent of separating themselves from bungie and halo since they where made. we just couldn't see it at the time and halo 4 was forgiven easily because they were a new studio. really like the rookie being the detective again never even thought of that.
It's one of many reasons everyone hates 343. Imagine trying to rip the soul and bones out of Halo, but trying to make the body still appealing to the players as this limp, lifeless mess.
I remember it starting and me just having that pit in my stomach feeling. Just filled with dread. Their sacrifice led to the Chief saving the world though.
Imagine a Halo game from the Marine's perspective. No shields, no special abilities Spartans can pull off, just u, your squad of Marines, ODSTs and maybe the occasional Spartan, and an army of Covenant. Some elements that would make u feel powerless given how vulnerable Marines in Halo were compared to Spartans when it came to durability. I'd play that
ODST wasn't really gritty, and was only dark in the literal context, but yes, we need a new one. Hell, I wouldn't mind fighting against Innies in this one.

Then there would be one where it's suicide literally, maybe only one way out which is to skip most enemies and pretty much survive as long as you can running through missions as fast as humanly possible.
I really like in Halo how they also acknowledge the fact that humans can still be the enemy even though the Covenant was a main threat. Just adds more depth to humanity as a whole in my opinion.
In most dystopian/aftermath situations....it's fairly common to find bands of natives who are just as much of a threat, possibly even worse to some degree than the outside invaders or home planet born initial threat.
The dude fought is way through hell and back, using his psychic abilities to see the past and find his team and survive the war just to be shot in the back of the head
Rookie was pivotal in one of the Halo novels. A Havoc nuke was involved in a surface fight, and he had to outrun it.... it is such a good fucking story. "Its not just dirt. It's our dirt..."
I have that book, it so good! Currently on the Mona Lisa section, though it suck that I've seen the Movie of it becuase i thought I'd never get a copy.
The book was amazing, people really need to read it. Just because he died in a book doesn’t mean it’s less meaning full. The story is just as good as a campaign.

I remember going from halo 4 to halo 5 when it came out. Was the most confusing experience ever and I just gave up on the franchise as a whole. I ended up playing infinite which was pretty good though
Remember when the lore is something to add onto the games. Now you need to read the lore in order to understand anything thats happening in the games. I hate how Halo was butchered in a decade of mistakes. There is’nt even anything 343 industries can take pride in. Halo wars 1 and 2 weren’t even their own dang work. All the setup and action in Halo wars 2 just got butchered at the beginning of infinite. We wanted to fight Atriox as the Chief in first person not watch a dang cutscene.
I’m not too familar with Bungie Halo lore on AI and if they go rampant, but hearing about playing Halo 4 kinda annoyed me, it annoyed me they were clearly going to have Cortana die to some newfangled nonsense I hadn’t seen in any other Halo game before (CE-Reach) just to drive a new plotline. Not only that, but they basically retconned how humans were supposed to be the forerunners, say what you will about the Halo 3 terminals but throughout the games its basically said (even guilty spark states it directly) that we are forerunner. All that mystery of finding ancient lost human tech and history gone, all the curiosity of wondering how we ascended to such a high technological level, all the questions we had about the remnants of the Halo ring firing millennia ago, the sense we were rediscovering ourselves as a species by finding Halo, was erased just so they could have a new big bad guy.
I honestly think this shows the point where 343 clearly didn't know what they were doing, a Character Important to the Games shouldn't be killed in a comic or book, unless for very important reasons, like the death of an actor. The Rookie was the Main Character of a game and for him to get killed off in a book is unacceptable for a franchise where the primary medium is Video Games.

It'd be interesting! Though honestly I'd prefer a spin off where we fight as Marines or drop in as ODST's again, maybe set just B4 Reach fighting Insurrectionists. Then the Covenant comes in the player has to pivot to working with ppl they were just fighting to repel the Aliens. Mainly I wanna play as someone other than a Spartan man. We've gotten so many games as the jacked up supersoldier, I just wanna be a squishy trooper again, it's more realistic. Idk, there's so much material out there it's a shame they haven't made very good use of it! Very glad 343 has been taken off of Halo as of recently

@@mariobadia4553 i think by the time halo 3 was out the whole self insert thing died. the chief was supposed to be a self insert too but i don't think anyone looks at him like that anymore. noble 6 is more like a self insert since you can use your own armour in the campaign and he has a super generic voice when he does speak. chiefs voice is pretty iconic now. i guess all im trying to say is don't bring him down by sayin he was just liked because he was a self insert he was brought in when halo was around its peak. i remember people making up reasons why he couldn't speak like he was Russian he could understand with a translator but didn't speak the language. haven't read any books on him so idk if he ever spoke but that's how people treated him as his own character. at least that's what i remember with my group of online friends
After everything the rookie did and went through with this squad mickey HESITATED to protect his brother in arms. Sad that this was done off screen and in such a tragic way, rookie deserved better.
Such an easy thing the Retcon too. Just say he was actually in a coma, and have him come back as a Spartan IV like Jun suggested he would've been. OR change the seen to it being the medics scrambling to save him but "fail" but not really because his death is faked and he's drafted to be a new spec ops operative by ONI, some Headhunter type lone wolf behind enemy lines stuff. Could have an entire light novel series following him and his missions, or even solo games that lead up to an ODST sequel, have him reunite with Buck at least! L The writer didn't know how to work with a Silent Protagonist, so he was lazy and killed him off. You could literally have an entire story told from a third person narration with beginning and end chapter "Mission Log" snippets being recordings by Rookie himself giving a summary of what's happened so far and where he's going next and what for. That could be a game or book!
this lore is explained in the Halo: New Blood book, for any that are curious. It follows the life of GySgt Edward Buck during, before, and after the HCW. It's an incredible lore-dump for the entirety of the ODST game and gives more context on veronica's relationship with buck as well. It also explains why and how he became a Spartan 4. Great read so far, almost done with it.
I played through all of odst with a "surroundsound" headset and the music turned off. Honestly prowling around new mobassa with the wind and rain and distant car alarms and the sounds of covenant patrols was amazing.
Rip rookie, odst is my favorite halo game and rookie my favorite character. I see people saying that killing him off in the book was a bad decision but I actually love it. It is incredibly disappointing and a waste of potential, but thats what i like about it, it is an example of how millions of amazing people fought so hard in the wars and after surviving all of that, gets killed on a small mistake. I was personally surprised to hear about that later on in the whole halo story. Know why they decided to kill him off but either way he looked like an important character. It just really sucks how he is and had to be that.😢😢😢
People saying this kind of fate for such a character is unfair, but I think that it's a really realistic death for the Halo series. It reminds us that no matter how badass and strong a character may be, in the end they're still a very fragile human being. Would be better if the death wasn't done off screen, though.

Rookie was probably the closest we got too a human acting as a Spartan.

I really do believe less is more. I personally feel the original Halo 3 terminals (ALL except the Ill informed lore breaking shitty ones written by Fronk O'Connor) give off a far more wonderful, creepy and cosmic picture of who and what the ancient forerunners (Ancient humans, fckin obviously) must have been. Replacing all that intentional mystery, massive scale intrigue with essentially a fcking court room drama about space Voldemorts trying to turn humans into bionicles fcking pissed me off. So much. I don't care if Steinbeck wrote it.

Its sad when the death isn't the firery hero's end or the noble sacrifice we all expect and hope for with characters we love, its them falling victim to a real situation that we would all believe they would fight out of.
For every Sgt. Johnson who had that final moment in the war, right there in the pivotal moments. We have the ones like Rookie and Kat gone in an instant a death that left them powerless to stop it.

When I found out I was so pissed, but the writers at 343 at the time were so hell bent on making their own stuff and sweeping away what Bungie left. I could only imagine if passionate writers had the rookie alive and A9 together as the crew for an alternate Halo 5 searching for chief and Cortana with Rookie being the silent detective piecing everything together.
they have been hell bent of separating themselves from bungie and halo since they where made. we just couldn't see it at the time and halo 4 was forgiven easily because they were a new studio. really like the rookie being the detective again never even thought of that.

Imagine a Halo game from the Marine's perspective. No shields, no special abilities Spartans can pull off, just u, your squad of Marines, ODSTs and maybe the occasional Spartan, and an army of Covenant. Some elements that would make u feel powerless given how vulnerable Marines in Halo were compared to Spartans when it came to durability. I'd play that
ODST wasn't really gritty, and was only dark in the literal context, but yes, we need a new one. Hell, I wouldn't mind fighting against Innies in this one.

I really like in Halo how they also acknowledge the fact that humans can still be the enemy even though the Covenant was a main threat. Just adds more depth to humanity as a whole in my opinion.

In most dystopian/aftermath situations....it's fairly common to find bands of natives who are just as much of a threat, possibly even worse to some degree than the outside invaders or home planet born initial threat.
The dude fought is way through hell and back, using his psychic abilities to see the past and find his team and survive the war just to be shot in the back of the head
Rookie was pivotal in one of the Halo novels. A Havoc nuke was involved in a surface fight, and he had to outrun it.... it is such a good fucking story.

I remember going from halo 4 to halo 5 when it came out. Was the most confusing experience ever and I just gave up on the franchise as a whole. I ended up playing infinite which was pretty good though

Remember when the lore is something to add onto the games. Now you need to read the lore in order to understand anything thats happening in the games. I hate how Halo was butchered in a decade of mistakes. There is’nt even anything 343 industries can take pride in. Halo wars 1 and 2 weren’t even their own dang work. All the setup and action in Halo wars 2 just got butchered at the beginning of infinite. We wanted to fight Atriox as the Chief in first person not watch a dang cutscene.
I’m not too familar with Bungie Halo lore on AI and if they go rampant, but hearing about playing Halo 4 kinda annoyed me, it annoyed me they were clearly going to have Cortana die to some newfangled nonsense I hadn’t seen in any other Halo game before (CE-Reach) just to drive a new plotline.
Not only that, but they basically retconned how humans were supposed to be the forerunners, say what you will about the Halo 3 terminals but throughout the games its basically said (even guilty spark states it directly) that we are forerunner.
All that mystery of finding ancient lost human tech and history gone, all the curiosity of wondering how we ascended to such a high technological level, all the questions we had about the remnants of the Halo ring firing millennia ago, the sense we were rediscovering ourselves as a species by finding Halo, was erased just so they could have a new big bad guy.
It’s going to be super badass watching what they do at the end then super sad watching Rookie and Cortana die. Maybe even Didact too.
I honestly think this shows the point where 343 clearly didn't know what they were doing, a Character Important to the Games shouldn't be killed in a comic or book, unless for very important reasons, like the death of an actor. The Rookie was the Main Character of a game and for him to get killed off in a book is unacceptable for a franchise where the primary medium is Video Games.
Rookie, Black Team etc, but they definitely need to stop killing important characters off-screen, and the way the rookie died was just awful imo.

It'd be interesting! Though honestly I'd prefer a spin off where we fight as Marines or drop in as ODST's again, maybe set just B4 Reach fighting Insurrectionists. Then the Covenant comes in the player has to pivot to working with ppl they were just fighting to repel the Aliens. Mainly I wanna play as someone other than a Spartan man. We've gotten so many games as the jacked up supersoldier, I just wanna be a squishy trooper again, it's more realistic. Idk, there's so much material out there it's a shame they haven't made very good use of it!

@@mariobadia4553 i think by the time halo 3 was out the whole self insert thing died. the chief was supposed to be a self insert too but i don't think anyone looks at him like that anymore. noble 6 is more like a self insert since you can use your own armour in the campaign and he has a super generic voice when he does speak. chiefs voice is pretty iconic now.
i guess all im trying to say is don't bring him down by sayin he was just liked because he was a self insert he was brought in when halo was around its peak. i remember people making up reasons why he couldn't speak like he was Russian he could understand with a translator but didn't speak the language. haven't read any books on him so idk if he ever spoke but that's how people treated him as his own character. at least that's what i remember with my group of online friends

Such an easy thing the Retcon too. Just say he was actually in a coma, and have him come back as a Spartan IV like Jun suggested he would've been. OR change the seen to it being the medics scrambling to save him but "fail" but not really because his death is faked and he's drafted to be a new spec ops operative by ONI, some Headhunter type lone wolf behind enemy lines stuff. Could have an entire light novel series following him and his missions, or even solo games that lead up to an ODST sequel, have him reunite with Buck at least! L
The writer didn't know how to work with a Silent Protagonist, so he was lazy and killed him off. You could literally have an entire story told from a third person narration with beginning and end chapter "Mission Log" snippets being recordings by Rookie himself giving a summary of what's happened so far and where he's going next and what for. That could be a game or book!

It follows the life of GySgt Edward Buck during, before, and after the HCW. It's an incredible lore-dump for the entirety of the ODST game and gives more context on veronica's relationship with buck as well.
It also explains why and how he became a Spartan 4. Great read so far, almost done with it.
I played through all of odst with a "surroundsound" headset and the music turned off. Honestly prowling around new mobassa with the wind and rain and distant car alarms and the sounds of covenant patrols was amazing.
Rip rookie, odst is my favorite halo game and rookie my favorite character. I see people saying that killing him off in the book was a bad decision but I actually love it. It is incredibly disappointing and a waste of potential, but thats what i like about it, it is an example of how millions of amazing people fought so hard in the wars and after surviving all of that, gets killed on a small mistake. ODST is the only halo game I’ve never completed the campaign in . I played The horde mode they had it was ahead of its time for sure
People saying this kind of fate for such a character is unfair, but I think that it's a really realistic death for the Halo series. It reminds us that no matter how badass and strong a character may be, in the end they're still a very fragile human being.
Would be better if the death wasn't done off screen, though.
