  • Preventive maintenance that'll keep your DEF system working smoothly. Not a required service item but a good idea to check.

We experienced the DEF screen of DEATH coming home from Tucson over the Labor Day weekend.
Our 17 Dodge Cummins went into limp mode as we were coming back through Albuquerque about Sunday noon. We made it to Moriarty New Mexico. Had to spend the weekend there. Only 950 miles from home!
Truck only had 58k miles on it.
Thankfully, I had enough tools to work on it.
The two rusty 10mm bolts (with 8mm threads) snapped clean off!!🤬🤬
The injector itself was pretty clean, but the port opening on the exhaust fitting had crystallized down to about half the diameter.
Popped out the crystallized ring with a heavy duty snap ring pick.
After watching another TH-camr’s video, I reattached the injector using stainless steel hose clamps, criss-crossed to the exhaust bung.
Thank God there was a diesel shop in town that was recommended by an extended family member. We got in first thing Tuesday morning . The owner did three regens on the system and cleared the death code. We made it back home all in one piece.
But now I have to have half the exhaust system removed to repair the broken 8 mm threaded bolts!
Thankfully, we purchased an extended warranty contract on the truck when we bought it.
After talking with the service manager at our local Dodge stealership, the emission system is warranted to 100,000 miles, depending on what part of the system it is of course, so we may able to get the bolts replaced under the emissions warranty.
But the shop is already four weeks behind in work now!
I had seen on another TH-cam video in the comment section that someone had recommended checking the DEF injectors, every 15-17,000 miles. I could not find that information anywhere in my worthless owners manual. But I would say the sooner you check it, the better and don’t wait until you have a problem .
On another note, the 19+ Dodge Cummins engines use a stud and tap fastening system to attach the injector to the exhaust.
I asked my local Dodge parts tech, and Dodge does not make a retrofit for the 18 and older trucks!

Love your channel! My 2018 gave the 150 miles until limp mode warning with 14,000 miles on it. Dealership replaced DEF injector under warranty. Discovered Blue Def Platinum with the anti crystalization additive and been running that exclusively since. Hope to avoid future problems using the Platinum.

I wish I could do that, but we occasionally drive to the communist state of California.
If CHP were to check the truck with a sniffer and it failed, it’s a $45,000 fine.

@@jademonkiego there all the time, never had a problem. They can’t just randomly pull you over for that purpose alone so don’t speed and you’ll be fine.

Thanks Maion, where's the injector actually located on the engine??

    • @MarionBlair
      @MarionBlair  ปีที่แล้ว +2

It’s in the exhaust pipe just before the catalytic converter

I am told -- Idling and slow city driving is of the worse things to cause problems - the company will not talk about it much if at all - but they will Fix the problem for a small fortune for ya - I just happened to run into it while still under warranty - thank goodness - when they mentioned how long it would take their downloads to come around and take affect - after talking to one service manager - I figured it out for myself and put a cleaner in the fuel tank that helped - since that function somehow works with the fuels - mine was using the gens an awful lot to suit its needs - at times 10 to 15 minutes - CRC diesel clean worked for it - at double strength - maybe three times a year - and i use the platinum DEF once and a while - it even smells different - now what i wonder - is how to clean the DEF Filters - so that the $1500 dollar service at around 100,000 miles will not pop up - Bet the service warning light comes on anyway no matter what - and you have to pay anyway to have it reset -- body shops cannot reset Rams -- only dodge can -- not even Cummins can do so -- or all other places that i tried -- a body shop had them check a different sigh in my dash window after a repair was done - they charged $250. dollars just to check - said they didn't know of that change until checking - BS ! -- nothing was done - it was correct -- BUT -- a symbol was changed while they worked on it - with the battery unhooked - company said it was a normal change - just an expensive coincidence they said - the word Mobsters - comes to mind -- after contacting cummins - I was told they are not even allowed to talk about that engine - the 6.7 diesel is not owned by Cummins - Ram only owns it -- Cummins cannot even sell you a filter - ahahahahaha - MOBsters are us says ram --- there was a court battle for bigg $$$ -- Cummins is not even allowed to stop making that engine for ram alone -- ahahahaha - what the hell has happened to the U.S. - like russia - Mobsters have already taken over it seems - the fuel filters that are being used - are from tractors from the 60s 70s era -- revamped for us folks with too much money ---- they can even be redone to fit other filters -- cheap ones even - - I own tractors from the 30s up to new - ahahahahahaha --- good heads up on the dirty cleaner for the dirty exhaust from the dirty fuel from the dirty engine - ahahahahaha -- they have Trains that have electric engines that get 500 MPG on the diesel used to start the Electric Engines - ain't that Special - and Electric Engines - are much much Stronger than diesels -- if they want them to be -- what the hell has happened to the U.S -- waiting for the heads up on the DEF filters ----- Good Videos --

Mr. Blair, Good Evening from Phoenix, AZ. My wife has a Gen 4 2500. I have a Gen 5 3500 Mega Cab Dually with 28K miles. We are planning a trip this summer with the Dually pulling our DRV 5th Wheel, about 5500 miles. I was wondering, as you mentioned in the video, would you suggest to clean the DEF injector on the dually prior to leaving as preventative maintenance? Thanks in advance, I appreciate your videos.

Thanks Marion. Do you think there would be a good time span in which to perform this service for those of us who don't put a lot of miles on our trucks?

Probably about 100,000 miles if you use a good quality DEF
