Read a good amount of comments here. I think the fact that this is still talked about today is a very good reason why Nico retired. He had nothing left to gain after 2016 but a lot to lose, those golden years with family and a child growing up. Motorsports is still pretty dangerous too so theres always a risk there. All these comments about 'why he retired', the life of a f1 driver has no time for family, youre always traveling, training, and you have about 2 weeks off.
Look at Nico Rosberg's youtube channel, hes still very passionate about F1 and gives back to his fans with his insights and detailed hotlaps. he even has a sim. yes you can be rich and you can be talented and gifted but its another thing to share and create a community, which hes done with his family and his community.
Another good example for the complete diff reason for retiring is James Hunt vs Nikki Lauda

The opposite bit of toxic gossip exists.
Before his sad demise, 3 x F1 GP WDC TITLES HOLDER,['75, '77 & '82] Niki Lauda, aviation entrepreneur and executive director of Mercedes Petronas F1 racing team, (who with part-owner and team principal before Toto Wolff, the well respected Ross Brawn MBE, talked Hamilton into joining Mercedes, sat around the Young Gun's kitchen table of his birth mother, in her London home, still head-shaking shocked at 'The Dark Arts' of motor racing involved), as he alluded to Rosberg's underhand manner in inter-team rivalry with Hamilton.
Like, demanding in 2016, a swop and big-time access to Hamilton's mechanics, (who had helped the future 'Black Knight from Stevenage' to win 2014 & 2015 F1 GP WDC TITLES) who the McLaren 2008 F1 GP WDC TITLE HOLDER brought to Mercedes with him from McLaren.
Nico understood enough about basic psychology to be aware, that this would destabilise Hamilton's World Championship winning focus and sure enough it did precisely that . . .
And, Hamilton's race car reliability and engineering 'issues' increased expotentially, ten-fold.
      Even unbelievably, (for a Mercedes), catching a-fire. . .
Something unheard of previously and never to be seen happen again since . . . Until Mercedes AMG team mate George 'Lothario' Russell's race car caught fire, (again) at the 2022 British Grand Prix . . .
In 2016 F1 GP season, Hamilton still won more races (10) than Rosberg, but suffered more bereft of Podium Finishes World Championship points, due to 'mishaps'; ultimately because of too many DNFs.
      Ah well, can't win 'em all . . .
Adding the debacle of 2021 Abu Dhabi deliberate robbery of Sir Lewis' ultimate 8th F1 GP WDC TITLE, witnessed by a 2 billion-strong international TV audience, which blatantly favoured Max Verstappen and RedBull, just as that mendacious supergrass and nasty piece of work for an energy drinks manufacturer RedBull team principal like Christian Horner and his equally toxic boss, the walking, cadaverous Austrian corporate sponsorship USD $Multi-Billions purse-strings guardian, Dr Helmut Marko, both 'cloak and dagger planned' and 'lo and behold' and allegedly so, porcine snouts were buried deep in the over-flowing troughs filled with astronomic sums of the filthy lucre, destined to exchange hands in the process . . .
It is arguable that the now seriously devalued and potentially corrupt sport of F1, (chock full of shadowy 'connected' characters like Spanish racing driver Fernando Alonso's old manager, the Monaco Principality mini-palace dwelling Flavio Briatore), therefore F1 allegedly no longer commands the internationally auspicious respect it once did . . .

Rosberg failed to win the championship in 2014 because the team gave it to Hamilton!
After Belgium, the team punished Rosberg, despite the accident was not his fault, but Toto Wolff decided it was.
From that point on the team supported Hamilton, and effed up Rosberg's car in Singapore, effed up the balance of Rosberg's car in Japan, effed up Rosberg's extra power ability, so that he could not possibly overtake Hamilton in USA, and then in Abu, when Rosberg still had a chance, "somehow" he lost 160 horsepower.
All the while Hamilton had zero problems with the car.

Let us look at the facts: throughout the 2016 season, Hamilton retired twice, while Rosberg retired once.
The important data point here is this: 100% of Rosberg's retirements and 50% of Hamilton's retirements happened due to Hamilton crashing against Rosberg in the Spanish GP.
Until then Rosberg had won 4 in a row.
