Yeah, that's the beauty of this sketch, and maybe others from this series. Lesser writers/actors might have made fun of the contestants, but somehow we're laughing with them instead of at them. EDIT: Evidently a lot of people replying to my comment are having diaper rash because I stated “underrated”. Like every other comment on social media, there’s always HALF WITS who have to take exception, thus I’ll clarify my statement for those cry babies:
Compared to Candy (SCTV) and Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and a long list of others from SNL, Eugene Levy, though just as funny if not funnier, didn’t enjoy the same level of fame.

Alex Trebek said that while he enjoyed Will Farrell on NBC's Saturday Night Live, his favorite parody of himself was Eugene Levy as Alex Trebel.

This is one of my favourite premises from SCTV!
What a multitalented cast and brilliant writing!
I think SCTV is the best Canadian comedy show ever! The bar is high so that's saying a lot!

Man- I loved this show! Way better than SNL even in their best days!

@uni blab to be honest I agree. I am personally entertained more by this show as a whole vs the total body of SNL. Obviously Eddie, Belishi and a others mentioned became icons individually and has some the best body of work SNL or any show ever aired but in the grand scheme I like this show better.

@Jim Pfffft! They changed casts so often. Shows's been dead for 30 years now. Idle time slot.

@Jim Are you on crack? SCTV was 10x funnier than SNL, especially SNL in the 80's. SCTV was clever and intelligent humor. SNL was trying to hard to be hip and topical and ended up being boring

This was norm's inspiration for the snl jeopardy skit, and he did the courtesy of calling eugene levy and getting his permission to do the sketch. Class act
