A very interesting video, with a lot of points that I’d never thought about but that seem obvious now you’ve said them. I know Marvel movies are pretty much the only films I go to the cinema to see, everything else I can wait till it’s streamable
Not me, I'll see maybe some of the main Marvel movies in theater, like No Way Home, but ultimately I still go to see a variety of different movies in the theater.
as someone who actuallly works at my local movie theater I'm genuinely afraid of the theater shutting down eventually, not because of troubles with having to find a new job, but because the theater has been a great place for me, it's been how I learn about new exciting movies to watch because I just don't actively search out news about, well anything really, so if it shuts down I'll lose that source of entertainment information, it's also a place that I've come to genuinely love being in because I get to play a big part in a lot of peoples lives, a little kids first ever movie, a duo's first tentative steps at being a couple, a family's big gathering, an elderly couples anniversery, there's so many little things that go on in the theater that I genuinely adore watching and i'd genuinely feel bad to see that sort of environment disappearing
I agree I hope movie theaters never die. It's just nice in general to get out of the house with friends and families, checking out movies that you've been waiting for on a massive screen, and buying large overpriced popcorn. Good times and now good memories.
I don't think it will disappear, but one day it will be like radio shows. They're still out there and rerun, but only for those who seek it out and enjoy niche entertainment.
I do want my local theater to survive even if the village buys it to run older shows. So many great memories with my friends, going to see kids movies in the summer with my mom, and the screams of a hundred little girls at Hannah Montana the movie. Good times
The sad truth is that when the MCU ends it’s not gonna end with a good ending. If it did then they would keep making more movies, as evidenced by endgame, it could’ve been the end but it did well so they kept going. It’s gonna end with an unsatisfying and bad ending.

Here’s something to keep in mind: Pinocchio, Fantasia, Bambi, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and Sleeping Beauty were all box office disappointments not because not enough people saw them, they were all among the most successful movies of their respective years. It’s because animation was REALLY expensive compared to today, and very few animated movies made enough to recoup the costs to make them. That, and World War II meant that fewer people saw movies in general, which basically killed any chance of any of Disney’s movies turning in a profit at the time, hence why their movies released between Bambi and Cinderella were just a bunch of animated shorts loosely tied together, like Song of the South or The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.

I personally think it would be cool if marvel did a bit of slowing down, like maybe making some less world ending threats for the heroes to deal with and then building things up again for another infinity war or endgame.
There already will be a universe ending threat in Avengers secret wars which will release later this decade because of this whole multiverse concept. The idea of just world ending threats has already gone its course plus there are gonna be new stakes with the multiverse concept
At this point I kind a wish they made a movie in which the villain just culls everyone above street-level power. If they come back at all, it should be when the newer heroes have also reached that level of power
I think you can actually see this with how movies are more profitable on streaming sites than in theater with the success of Encanto. It had little buzz when it premiere on theater, and yet after its Disney+ release suddenly We Don't Talk About Bruno is the most popular and talked about song in the US rn.
True. Heck, Disney has a number of "Disney+ exclusive" series that ties into the movies to some degree. And considering how streaming services are, as you stated, more profitable, it makes sense that Disney+ putting Marvel products in their lineup is (as MatPat made in an analogy around 10:20) reinforcing the Load Baring Beam that is Marvel as a whole.
Theory idea: What type of water would be necessary for Frozone's ice skills to actually freeze water? I'm currently rewatching Incredibles 2 and during the climax fight scene (around 1:41:08 in the movie), Frozone uses his powers to freeze the water surrounding the yacht in order to change its direction. His ice appears to be very small and shallow on/in the water, however later in this fight sequence (1:44:13) he shows just how large his ice can really be, on solid ground though (he's not freezing any water). Is freezing bodies of water possible within his power set? If so, what type of water would it have to be / conditions / would this be a "it works but..." situation, etc.
Another way the MCU might "phase" out of existence is if its comic book source material fades away. Western comics have been on the decline in recent years partly due to competition by overseas competitors like Japanese manga. Once the comics start to dry up, the MCU will be left with coming up with their own original ideas or recycle the same plot lines until there is no originality left at all....
I think u underestimate Marvel's pull for good writers. Imo it wont matter if they run out of comic material as long as they have good writers to come up with new ideas.

It was really interesting seeing this from the perspective of someone who works in a movie theater. It was insane how many movies got pushed out so that SPier-Man could be shown as much as possible. It was also interesting seeing how long Venom 2 lasted in theaters with auditoriums consistently over 50% capacity. And I work at a smaller theater, with no IMAX screens and mostly small auditoriums, I can't imagine what it was like for bigger theaters with IMAX and bigger auditoriums.
Comming back to this theory about 2 years later, It's honestly shocking how well the main points of the video hold up. Especially concerning what finaly broke the MCU 1. "Over-stretching the MCU": With so many projects flying out at once both on streaming and Disney+, it wasn't fun anyomore to watch a Marvel movie because at that point it became actual homework figuing out "Is there something in here that's going to spoil another show?", "What other media is relevent to the movie I'm watching?", ontop of an already frustrating experience that feels like an uneeded extention of a story that was largely finished. 2. "Poor Leadership": It really felt like the MCU had no clear trajectory going into phase 4 and now in phase 5 other than "Make Money", and if there was a plan, It was murky at best... It also doesn't help that the MCU became one of many victims of Disney's push to artifically inflate the Disney+ library with no clear idea on how to balance the Cinema aspect of the MCU, and the Content aspect in a healtly way for the brand, essentially cauing it to implode from the sheer amount of media being produced. 3. "Decreasing cultural intrest": All of the problems I mentioned before were only exasserbated by the absolute cliff dive in quality as the MCU kept chugging along, with the head of the train shoveling in more money than the MCU was (and still is) making. It was always going to be difficult reigniting public intrest after the Infinity Saga, but that as only made worse when people realized just how low the bar for quality has gotten. People don't talk about Marvel anymore because simply, you can only make a bloated corpse insteresting for so long before people smell the stentch of the rot seeping in. The MCU fell into each of the major pitfalls, and now it's paid the price (literally).
Have you not seen movies like The Equalizer, Crank, Nobody, John Wick, they’re very much those kind of normal looking people who get driven to the limit and are hidden badasses. It’s a genre we’ve tapped into, we just haven’t driven it into the ground quite yet.
Equalizer I can agree with, but Matpat was talking about actually normal people who suddenly find themselves into extreme situations, not just ones who appear normal. Crank is about a hitman, Nobody is about about former assassin, and John Wick... well, that one is obvious. They appear normal, but they already have experience in that industry the movie is focusing on. Equalizer is the only one who seems to be about a normal guy.
Oh, so that’s why Walt had that show where he would show segments of his animated movies in! It was to help keep them relevant and exciting in the collective minds of his viewers so the re-releases would make more money. Pretty shrewd idea for the 50’s when all he had was cable TV. I honestly can't take MattPat serious because he's constantly saying Enternals is an underrated masterpiece. Not even the biggest fans don't consider it a top 3 marvel movie.
Suddenly realizing this this is going to be my "back in my day moment" I love the movies more than anything, I would go almost every weekend before the pandemic and I agree I feel like movies just aren't the same anymore there are so few original ideas and everything is so big now that its really hard to create wow factor that has people running to the theatres. I was living in a movie golden age and I didnt even know it, that makes me feel so old.
same! I used to have a "Tuesday movie night" with my friends back before the panini because it was only 5 dollars to go see one. We'd go just about every week and watch whatever movie seemed vaguely interesting at the time. The idea of theatres being thrown to the wayside makes me pretty sad to think about, honestly
Lived through much of the 90s with early 2000s seen as the Dark Age of movies with some exceptions. The writing was on the wall when the MCU opted for interconnected stuff across the board for me. Others didn’t plan that far ahead.
@@grabble7605 I would agree with this statement the most here. As I grow older I become aware of new concepts, new to me. And for Eva, I'd say I noticed a similar decline in enticement for my love of video games as I get older. I don't think games are any better or worse than when I was a child, but I have far more going on in my life. I have a family now, have had a job for the last 10 years, finding and starting a relationship took time, family events and holidays. Now I also attempt to learn far more than I have over the past 14 years since graduating. My time is far more limited and has more value. Spending time watching new movies is less appealing to me, especially when I don't know how much I will or won't enjoy it.
I hope theatres don't die any time soon. I never got to see movies in theatres too much as a kid because my parents thought it was too expensive. The only times I got to see movies in theatres was if my daycare took me or my friend invited me to a movie night. From what I remember the first movie I saw in theatres was a Harry Potter movie (don't remember which one) that my daycare took us to which was awful 'cause I was much too young for it and the movie gave me nightmares! My first animated movie from what I remember was Up and my first 2D animated movie was Wolfwalkers which was gorgeous to watch on the big screen! Makes me wish that theatre reruns of older movies was a bigger thing. I would LOVE to see The Lion King or Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron on the big screen since I missed out on those experiences due to being the wrong age (wasn't even born yet for TLK) and having parents that wouldn't take me no matter what. ... That and theatre popcorn is delicious!
I started working at a movie theater a couple months ago, around the time Shang-chi was still playing for a little longer before it was gone, waiting until Eternals premiered and eventually Spider-Man No Way Home. The theaters were full when it was time for MCU films and now since it's going to be a while until Doctor Strange 2, they're usually empty. No one really comes to watch the other films being released. Imagining that situation with the 'IF' Disney stopped releasing Marvel films, I'm sure that no one would even want to visit the movie theaters. It could lead to the eventual closing of theaters. That would be horrible, especially for me, and not just because of losing my job, but the theater experience would not exist anymore, and watching MCU films is what got me interested in studying Film.
I can assure you, at the very least, MCU won't end until there's Kevin Feige (president of Marvel). He has been responsible for building this interconnected sophisticated universe, and he has lots and lots of stories to tell. After he steps down, or retires, I don't know what the future would be for MCU.

And as a comics nerd I would both hope and posit, that comics have the scope to continually push boundaries and shock the previously ignorant. So fingers crossed I'll eventually see all those amazing comics arcs I love from the comics in the big screen.....
This theory is actually accurate, at least for me. Went out to watch movies during the pandemic only to watch Marvel movies as I am a big fan. However, this experience provided me enough comfort level to actually go out and watch other movies in the theater. Without MCU, wouldn't have gone out to the theaters and would have just waited for everything else to come to streaming services.
There is a problem with this theory: it doesn't take into consideration that the downfall of such a big company would take a long period of time to happen. Yes, if it happened suddenly all the things that were said in the video would happen. But if it happened over let's say a decade or two it wouldn't make such an impact
Marvel could definitely tank suddenly and that would absolutely destroy the theater industry. A few years ago, we had YA films bringing in bank. They disappeared almost instantly. It's possible.
Disney and most larger studios will survive, but the theaters themselves could disappear in a snap. It wouldn't take a decade. If it happens (or more realistically, when it happens), it's going to happen rapidly.
This kind of reminds me of another film Theory matpat made about a year ago it was called how Disney ruined the streaming and he explained how if Netflix has bad luck they won't be able to recover. Now look at this, he's basically saying if this MCU thing doesn't keep handing out the theatre industry itself might not be able to recover so at this point it's streaming vs. Theatres when before I feel they could have co-existed, then covid hit, theaters relevancy has been declining since ever since then and probably will never make it back to the same height that used to. So now it has to directly compete with streaming services. And I love going to the theatre I still do I always have but at the end of the day I don't think theatres are going to survive that much longer sure might take a while but they won't last forever that's inevitable at this point. Or who knows honestly maybe the theatres will introduce something maybe try to pair up with some streaming services so we can get a Netflix specific or Disney Plus specific Theater I think that sounds kind of interesting actually?

yeah i do think that movie theatres could maybe survive if they do things like teaming up with streaming services bc while ppl may watch more movies at home, there are still plenty of ppl who like the experience of watching it with other ppl irl and it makes an easy night out. i honestly won't be too surprised if we start seeing special events happening at theatres that make them more of a social thing than just a place for movies

It’s just such a drag going to the theater when I can watch everything at home with a group of friends, people I actually like that aren’t coughing or yelling at the top of their lungs during the film

I really love movies, TV shows, books, and theatre that truly put months, years, passion, and care towards its works of art. Congrats MatPat, you predicted a way for my childhood to be ruined, just as your catch-phrase had stated.
I find it super sad that cinema is dying, I have always been and will always be a cinema purist, I just love the experience, and I love movies and the MCU. And maybe it’s more convenient to watch movies on d+, but I don’t care man, I can’t even put it into words but for me the theater experience is the just quintessential, irreplaceable way to watch a movie, and it breaks my heart to see it’s downfall happening so quickly and having no way to stop it…
I think it's very possible movie theaters disappear like blockbuster, but movies will still be made. They will just find a new way to monitize it or all go the way of streaming sevices
Well, the reason I like going to the theater for a marvel movie is the theatre makes it more immersive. You got the big explosions, the great CGI and the drama and comedy. It's a nice well rounded package of a movie.
not to mention the amazing soundtrack really makes you feel more immersed in the story. When "portals" started playing in Avengers Endgame, it easily became one of the most memorable soundtracks in the entire MCU.
@@stevenscott2136 well a war movie can be great in the theatre and be realistic, but when I go to the movies i wanna be immersed in a world and I want to enjoy the communal experience of watching a movie in a crowd. You don't really get the most out of that unless you have a really bombastic movie with lots of explosions and big moments, I mean using endgame as an example that movie is full of moments that make you cheer or gasp or cry, that's what I want out of a movie experience even if its just a portion of that. doesn't have to be as big as endgame was.
As a person who's never really gone to the theatres, I went to see Rise Of Skywalker in the cinema, and it's made the movie a favourite of mine. Not just because of the movie, but because of the experience of going out with family to enjoy something special, something we don't often do. Even if cinemas are doing down-hill, I bet a lot of us will remember the experiences we've all had.
Depends on the movie, though. If the movie in question makes for a good time at the theaters, then I think it'll be fondly remembered, even if the movie itself isn't all that great. Case in point, Avatar and IT part 2(for me at least). You mentioned Rise of Skywalker. I saw that movie in theaters opening weekend, and it was the first time I felt like I wasted my time and money. The movie is just that unbearable.
But the cinema experience can be ruined by misbehaving people and when someone much taller than you comes to sit the seat front of you and the you can only see his back not the movie. This has happened to me couple of times when i was in the cinema. So when you can stream the movie from your home you have noone to interupt or there is no one to become an obstacle what could prevent you for seeing the movie.
Marvel is indeed "Too Big, to fail" That's the reason why Sony which was reluctant in sharing one Spiderman now shared all three and all the old villians, the entire hollywood needs Marvel and other theme park movies or 3d imax movies should exist in order for the cinema to exist, or concept of cinema theatre in a pandemic period won't survive.
I really enjoyed this theory, especially how it makes since when you look at Disney’s other properties when it comes to theatrical releases: Take Pixar’s Luca for example, Disney released it only on their streaming service because they new people wouldn’t feel motivated to get out of the house to watch a movie they have no other context of besides what they see in the trailers(a simple story about sea monsters that can turn human on land). You could argue this had to do with the pandemic however, but with Pixar releasing another one of their newest movies, Turning Red, straight to streaming, you began to see a pattern. Now with their new release of Pixar’s Lightyear they know people will feel more motivated to go to theater for a character they already have so much context about. The same can be said for Disney’s Encanto, although barely anyone was talking about it before it released on Disney plus, they new people would be familiar with Lin Manuel Miranda and his music, so they risked putting it in theaters before it blew up on Disney plus .
I don't really agree with you on this one. The MCU is doing a really good job on Disney+. As you already stated part of what Disney is doing is making a brand to sell toys, disney land and other stuff. Disney+ can do that also and with SO much content it allows them to make money off it while providing a good deal with pretty much everyone. I suspect the MCU would survive theaters.

Speaking of movies and evolving trends in media, I've noticed that we're seeing more Japanese titles hitting the big screen in western countries. Dragon Ball Super movies sprung up over the last 10 years, which have been followed by younger franchises like My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer, and Jujitsu Kaisen. I'm interested in theories about this trend and how eastern media is gradually changing western viewing habits.
Good point. It may be because of a couple of factors. 1. Watching animation is becoming more socially acceptable for adults in part because of the success of the MCU and "nerd" culture. 2. People are beginning to realize that the Japanese have been doing genres like superpowered action adventure more intelligently and innovatively than Western creators for years. Just look at how My Hero Academia approaches the concept of superhero storytelling vs. what you see in the West.
Let’s be honest here, many of us like a lot of the marvel films but for a long time now marvel has been in a place where they haven’t really had to prove anything. By proxy they haven’t had much of a reason to TRY as well. If that day comes where they actually have to try harder at the things they lack in it’s ok because they’re big enough to the point where I don’t think we have to face a literal goodbye to the movies altogether. They can afford the humility and that’s why we need studios like dc to really give them a run for their money.

I can't see the mcu as ever dying. They have literally THOUSANDS of characters that could all be made into their own movies and tv shows. It would take centuries before Disney actually manages to squeeze the life out of Marvel.
Yeah I agree, like think about how long the marvel comics have been running for, literally 100+ years. In my opinion I think Disney is just trying to recreate that comic book release experience from the last Century and put it into a medium like television and film for today's world

I knew we still had a ton more things to show for marvel after the infinity saga like the multiverse which they are currently doing, secret wars and just the fact that they have a ton more characters to include. the mcu just keeps getting larger and larger as new characters get introduced allowing them to remain fresh. As long as the mcus event films remain high quality, they qill stay on top.

Exactly. I didn’t even go to the movies much as a kid. But when the MCU dropped around high school, I immediately was in the theater for every movie. I’d still go see other franchises (007, HP, etc) but in my mind, they’re just not as worth it. MCU is the only franchise that gets me super excited to go to the movies, and sometimes that excitement carries over into non-superhero products lol
The too big to fail thing made me realize something... I'm an animator, currently studying animation to make my own studio and I've joked about getting big enough to be bigger than Disney. Of course I never thought too hard about it but what you said about it... It's possible, all it would take is one incredible movie to topple over Disney and put yourself at the top. And I've seen what smaller creators can do, I've seen people make things better than Disney, but fear is holding them back. Now I think I might try that "be bigger than Disney" idea
My friend and I were having a similar conversation not too long ago. Eventually it’s going to get to a point where -viewing movies and understanding them is no longer possible without an almost encyclopedic knowledge of the MCU (which, let me remind you, goes back to 2008-14 years at this point). -Marvel runs out of relevant characters people are actually willing to go to movies and see. We’re already seeing this. Seriously, how many people knew the Guardians of the Galaxy or Ant-Man before you watched the movies? Can you tell me one big bad from Moon Knight without looking it up?
If Marvel keeps the same format they've done so far keeping up isn't going to be hard, you could literally just watch the major team up movies and you'd know all the important info. For example lets say you didn't watch doctor strange and jumped to Infinity war all you need to know is that he's a wizard hero that helps the avengers and then from there if you like him, you watch his movie if not you can still enjoy Infinity War. As for relevant characters thats not gonna be a problem any time soon as there are still tons the MCU hasn't tapped into or like you brought up with Ant-Man/GOTG they'll make them relevant.

The official reason that was given was that franchise fatigue had killed interest in the brand, and while that may be partially true since 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis had severely underperformed at the box office, just barely making it's budget back, there was another lesser known reason why that run had come to an end. Former CEO of CBS Les Moonves just didn't like or see the appeal of Star Trek or Science Fiction in general, so he had the plug pulled on Star Trek: Enterprise as it was starting to find it's footing under a new showrunner, For reference (and I might be wrong on some details) CBS had bought UPN (The United Paramount Network) a few years prior, likely near the end of Star Trek Voyager's run, but it seems like Les Moonves didn't exactly do his research into the shows his company would be acquiring as a result. By the time that Star Trek: Enterprise had started to find it's own voice following the replacement of Rick Berman as showrunner in favor of Manny Coto, The Underperformance of Star Trek Nemesis and the Arc fatigue from the "Temporal Cold War" and "Xindi Conflict" stories had supposedly killed off a lot of interest in the brand and pretty much served as the final nails in the coffin for the 18 years of Star Trek Content and Star Trek Enterprise would end in it's 4th Season with the worst series finale in Star Trek history, "These Are the Voyages" which was more of a glorified TNG holodeck episode than an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise, having brought in Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis as Commander Riker and Counselor Troi respectively and framing the episode around the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation's Seventh Season episode "The Pegasus". I dunno if I'd be as rosy about how Phase 4 is doing. There have been a few different highlights for different people, but NWH was the *first* time everyone was excited. It was Phase 4's first big success while everything else has been so-so.

I can relate to what Mat is saying. The last time I went to a movie theatre was the opening week of Endgame and now after this two years I went to see No Way Home. That got me thinking I only went to the theatres for MCU movies.
I am honestly also cheering on the MCU; I don’t like spending so much time on TH-cam, insta, etc; therefore I want movie theaters to thrive, it’s easier to not pull out my phone in a theater and fully immerse myself into the film. Not to mention that movies have always been a large part of my life and it’s easier for me to go and see something I haven’t seen before at a theater rather than turning down a chance to watch a favorite of mine for the gazillionth time instead of the new thing.
I wholeheartedly agree with you, one of my favorite things to do is go to the cinema. I personally don’t have any social media because they aren’t for me but it really has to do with the addiction and corruption it can cause with many. Anyway, the point is, I’m a huge fan of the MCU, so I’ve seen every show on Disney+ and most of the time this year, I’ve seen every movie on opening night. And I absolutely loved all of them but especially NWH because I had been looking at leaks and rumors for a whole year before it came out. It’s a masterpiece, and though this may seem like a stretch, it’s the best superhero movie of all time in my eyes. The unity of the three Peters and celebration of 20 years of Spider-Man is fantastic.
Hey, I have a question/theory idea: Me and my siblings disagree on the stakes in Eternals. [Spoiler warning, I guess] Tiamut was going to burst out of the ground and destroy the world- but looking at them, you can see their head and their hand at the same time. Since the horizon is approximately 3 miles away, this implies Tiamut is smaller than that. I think Tiamut is too small to destroy the planet entirely. They would totally cause an apocalypse, but my siblings and I disagree on the scale. I think it would be along the lines of the dinosaur asteroid, or climate change, while they think it would be more along the lines of Alderaan. There is a scene where this is shown to Sersi by Arishem, but I think it's hyperbole, because when we see Tiamut in person, they are WAY smaller. So here's my question: *Is Tiamut big enough to cause the Earth to explode? What repercussions would the world see if Sersi didn't abort them?* I think they totally could have removed Tiamut from the Earth without destroying it, if they went slow enough, because Tiamut can probably fly like Arishem. I would like to see your professional opinion, though. (Also, not quite relevant to the question, but I think if celestials are powered up by intelligent life, we can afford to cut out the middleman and create those "untold billions of lives who will never be born" ourselves. But that's just my opinion.)
Let's just say, due to busy family life (as well as a global pandemic), the last two movies I went to cinema for in the last 12+ months were Eternals and No Way Home. You nailed it when you said if Marvel fails right now, a lot of people who potentially could go watch a fun action/fantasy movie will no longer feel interested/invested enough to bother. And that's exactly my case.
One thing I noticed is that ever since Disney owned Blue Sky, the last movie Blue Sky released, Disney released a star wars film in the same month. Blue Sky released ‘Spies in disguise’ on Dec 4 2019, didn’t do very well, Disney released ‘Star wars rise of skywalker’ December 20 2019, which did fairly well. It’s hard to beat a Star Wars film which is why I think ‘Spies in disguise’ didn’t do very well.
I'm hoping it's still going strong in the 2040's. The MCU has been amazingly consistent, cinema and the superhero genre would lose one of it's current best parts.
I love watching movies in the theater, i love how loud it is and how big the screen is. I cant get a big screen like that at my house, or have it be that loud without the cops coming over for a noise complaint, its just a whole different experience. There are some down sides like someone too tall sitting in front of you or someone being loud and annoying but other than that i enjoy going to the movie theaters.

This got me thinking about how I love going to the movies despite being very introverted and generally not wanting to go outside. My best friend and I used to go to the theater 30 mins away from our campus just to see all the movies we both loved, and sometimes we'd watch the same movie twice in a week. Something I want to get back into is going to the movies by myself instead of waiting for people to watch something with me. Another note is that while Shang-Chi didn't do well in the box office compared to most other Marvel movies, it break a record for Thursday releases and earn $8.8 million. The number meant a lot to the Asian community, where 8 is associated with prosperity and good fortune. The movie may not have excelled in the way Spiderman: NWH did, but Shang-Chi did make a large community, including myself, feel seen for the first time in Hollywood superhero movies.
No way home is an event film on the level of an avengers movie so i wouldnt compare it. I think shang chi would have made way more if not for the pandemic and china refusing to show any disney movies.

This is interesting concerning the summer of 2023 movies released. A lot of these competitions brought people to the movie theaters for fun. Media glorified theaters with spiderman atsv and “barbenheimer”. Barbie vs Oppenheimer releasing on the same day was appealing to most of the media. Seeing both even if they didn’t fit the suggested audience. It is truely interesting how marketing can change the game
The marketing made people want to dress up for the movies. Expressing their dedication to the movies. Even I went to the Barbie movie dressed up. It just looked so appealing.
I’ve really started to gain a greater appreciation for the MCU now that I’ve started to make my way through as many of the non-MCU Marvel movies as I can find - very few come even close to the same quality of storytelling. There’s definitely a secret sauce that I doubt will be going away anytime soon (unless Feige quits or retires or something, which I don’t even want to think about what could happen after that)

I’ve loved his iteration of the character for years and I’m glad a lot of people are giving him more love and appreciation now because they had unfortunately been disliked by many. I believe Andrew deserves a TASM 3 to complete his trilogy like his brothers have.

By not topping it. The same argument was made at the end of Phase 1. How can you top the epic crossover from the previous five films? You do it all in waves. It's like the economy, endless growth is impossible.
Marvel can top anything they put out since the first avengers movie they did it with infinity war and endgame and secret wars will top that but marvel has plenty of content that will blow peoples ,minds and I’m excited for it.
Ultimately, it is the quality of content that makes Disney so great. I find myself with tears streaming down my cheeks at practically EVERY Disney movie. Old ones, new ones, sports movies, musicals, animated, live action, TV show finales, etc. (I never cried during Disney Channel shows or the made-for-TV movies from our childhood lol but those have a different feel, as do the red-headed step children of Disney known as the sequels to major titles like Lion King 2 and others). Disney has some kind of formula that has hacked my brain. I would assume many people feel the same way. Disney has a secret sauce. I would be devastated if Disney stopped making movies, especially MCU movies and shows. I hope there is much more to come, and we see the original Avengers make cameos/appearances once again. Long live the MCU! I hope this video isn’t a sign of the beginning of the end.

A crossover between marvel and dc is very possible if they got they're hands on warner bros. But it also another possibility of Disney abandoning Marvel or going to make DC as another money maker similar to Marvel.

It’s funny, I saw no way home in theaters and while there’s nothing like the experience, we saw venom within the aftercredits of the movie and decided to go see venom 2. This put the poster for the most recent scream (which was amazing) in my face and I saw that. If there hadn’t been a marvel movie I wouldn’t have seen the other two.
I actually very much do not want movie theaters to shut down. On top of being excellent ways to get out of the house and spend an afternoon they are very communal experiences I tend to only rarely get at home. It's like a real bonding experience to experience the same thing en mass with dozens of other people
Marvel comics has been around for almost 100 years, and they have had ups and downs but there have been consistent incredible events, and continuous modernization. Momentum comes in waves, scale ebbs and flows, and there are stories of all scale and sizes that remain relevant. Some of the best comics EVER written have been made in the last 5 years. There are plenty of amazing Marvel stories to tell, whether or not it's on streaming or in a theater. And plenty of merchandise of sell.

The experience of seeing a movie in a theater is something that can’t really be matched. I watched Dune in IMAX and then I watched it on HBO max and the theater legitimately heightened the experience. I love the hype up for the TH-cam brand but I don’t like to see bashing of the craftsmanship created to be experienced on the silver screen. I am biased though, I love spending my Friday nights in those sticky movie theaters.

I love that theory so much....but with Disney it's gonna be hard to take down something like Marvel. Them have s bunch of comics to base movies on and still making. The hundreds of characters Stan Lee made. There's still a lot more to see from Marvel. But hey that's just a theory, a film theory.
@@Azrael_Garou I think that the MCU is supposed to be a separate universe from the other universes in the comic. Therefore, none of the films will be exactly the same, or mostly similar, to the comics.
I honestly think the only thing that could even rival Marvel at this point is Star Wars, but Disney owns them as well. Yes, the sequel trilogy was a disaster. But it's still a massive franchise, with a massive franchise and they've been building a lot of good will as of late with Mando, Grogu, Obi-Wan, Boba etc. I've enjoyed the Disney + show from Marvel, but I'd be lying if I said I can't wait for Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Me personally, I go to the theater specifically FOR that group experience, and I'll try to see a film opening day to get maximum hype from the audience. The streaming option for me is dependent on the movie. I've had movies like Godzilla vs Kong or The Suicide Squad hit HBO Max where I could easily watch it, but I still go to the trouble of seeing it in theaters.
As someone looking to go into the film industry, the decline of movie theaters is a very real thing and something I’m very wary of. Unless something’s a mega franchise like the MCU, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to compete with streaming services and watch at home movies that are of the same production quality for cheaper. I think the moviegoing experience could turn into a thing of the past that only exists for the entertainment of the wealthy, sort of like the theatre.
@@grabble7605 TheatRE, not theatER. Very discreet difference right there, but theater refers to the place shows are shown, theatre referring to stage plays, Broadway, live performances and such. And the Doctor here is right - if you think cinema tickets are pricey, you should check out the Broadway box offices. Entertainment of that medium went from being a common, every day source of entertainment to something only big shots could afford. As a theatre kid, this makes me very, very disappointed.
Well it looks like Marvel knows this since they're putting some more effort in their games, last year the Guardians of the galaxy game was reported to be shockingly good, Marvel's Miles Morales also was amazing and the second part for the Spider-man game is coming with strong expectations so... Marvel could still have some good cards under their sleeves

as someone who actuallly works at my local movie theater I'm genuinely afraid of the theater shutting down eventually, not because of troubles with having to find a new job, but because the theater has been a great place for me, it's been how I learn about new exciting movies to watch because I just don't actively search out news about, well anything really, so if it shuts down I'll lose that source of entertainment information, it's also a place that I've come to genuinely love being in because I get to play a big part in a lot of peoples lives, a little kids first ever movie, a duo's first tentative steps at being a couple, a family's big gathering, an elderly couples anniversery, there's so many little things that go on in the theater that I genuinely adore watching and i'd genuinely feel bad to see that sort of environment disappearing

I agree I hope movie theaters never die. It's just nice in general to get out of the house with friends and families, checking out movies that you've been waiting for on a massive screen, and buying large overpriced popcorn. Good times and now good memories.
I don't think it will disappear, but one day it will be like radio shows. They're still out there and rerun, but only for those who seek it out and enjoy niche entertainment.
I do want my local theater to survive even if the village buys it to run older shows. So many great memories with my friends, going to see kids movies in the summer with my mom, and the screams of a hundred little girls at Hannah Montana the movie. Good times

The sad truth is that when the MCU ends it’s not gonna end with a good ending. If it did then they would keep making more movies, as evidenced by endgame, it could’ve been the end but it did well so they kept going. It’s gonna end with an unsatisfying and bad ending.

Here’s something to keep in mind: Pinocchio, Fantasia, Bambi, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and Sleeping Beauty were all box office disappointments not because not enough people saw them, they were all among the most successful movies of their respective years. It’s because animation was REALLY expensive compared to today, and very few animated movies made enough to recoup the costs to make them. That, and World War II meant that fewer people saw movies in general, which basically killed any chance of any of Disney’s movies turning in a profit at the time, hence why their movies released between Bambi and Cinderella were just a bunch of animated shorts loosely tied together, like Song of the South or The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.

I personally think it would be cool if marvel did a bit of slowing down, like maybe making some less world ending threats for the heroes to deal with and then building things up again for another infinity war or endgame.
There already will be a universe ending threat in Avengers secret wars which will release later this decade because of this whole multiverse concept. The idea of just world ending threats has already gone its course plus there are gonna be new stakes with the multiverse concept

I think you can actually see this with how movies are more profitable on streaming sites than in theater with the success of Encanto. It had little buzz when it premiere on theater, and yet after its Disney+ release suddenly We Don't Talk About Bruno is the most popular and talked about song in the US rn.
True. Heck, Disney has a number of "Disney+ exclusive" series that ties into the movies to some degree. And considering how streaming services are, as you stated, more profitable, it makes sense that Disney+ putting Marvel products in their lineup is (as MatPat made in an analogy around 10:20) reinforcing the Load Baring Beam that is Marvel as a whole.

Theory idea: What type of water would be necessary for Frozone's ice skills to actually freeze water?
I'm currently rewatching Incredibles 2 and during the climax fight scene (around 1:41:08 in the movie), Frozone uses his powers to freeze the water surrounding the yacht in order to change its direction. His ice appears to be very small and shallow on/in the water, however later in this fight sequence (1:44:13) he shows just how large his ice can really be, on solid ground though (he's not freezing any water). Is freezing bodies of water possible within his power set? If so, what type of water would it have to be / conditions / would this be a "it works but..." situation, etc.

Another way the MCU might "phase" out of existence is if its comic book source material fades away. Western comics have been on the decline in recent years partly due to competition by overseas competitors like Japanese manga. Once the comics start to dry up, the MCU will be left with coming up with their own original ideas or recycle the same plot lines until there is no originality left at all....
I think u underestimate Marvel's pull for good writers. Imo it wont matter if they run out of comic material as long as they have good writers to come up with new ideas.

It was really interesting seeing this from the perspective of someone who works in a movie theater. It was insane how many movies got pushed out so that SPier-Man could be shown as much as possible. It was also interesting seeing how long Venom 2 lasted in theaters with auditoriums consistently over 50% capacity. And I work at a smaller theater, with no IMAX screens and mostly small auditoriums, I can't imagine what it was like for bigger theaters with IMAX and bigger auditoriums.

Comming back to this theory about 2 years later, It's honestly shocking how well the main points of the video hold up. Especially concerning what finaly broke the MCU
1. "Over-stretching the MCU":
With so many projects flying out at once both on streaming and Disney+, it wasn't fun anyomore to watch a Marvel movie because at that point it became actual homework figuing out "Is there something in here that's going to spoil another show?", "What other media is relevent to the movie I'm watching?", ontop of an already frustrating experience that feels like an uneeded extention of a story that was largely finished.
2. "Poor Leadership":
It really felt like the MCU had no clear trajectory going into phase 4 and now in phase 5 other than "Make Money", and if there was a plan, It was murky at best... It also doesn't help that the MCU became one of many victims of Disney's push to artifically inflate the Disney+ library with no clear idea on how to balance the Cinema aspect of the MCU, and the Content aspect in a healtly way for the brand, essentially cauing it to implode from the sheer amount of media being produced.
3. "Decreasing cultural intrest":
All of the problems I mentioned before were only exasserbated by the absolute cliff dive in quality as the MCU kept chugging along, with the head of the train shoveling in more money than the MCU was (and still is) making. It was always going to be difficult reigniting public intrest after the Infinity Saga, but that as only made worse when people realized just how low the bar for quality has gotten. People don't talk about Marvel anymore because simply, you can only make a bloated corpse insteresting for so long before people smell the stentch of the rot seeping in.
The MCU fell into each of the major pitfalls, and now it's paid the price (literally).
Have you not seen movies like The Equalizer, Crank, Nobody, John Wick, they’re very much those kind of normal looking people who get driven to the limit and are hidden badasses. It’s a genre we’ve tapped into, we just haven’t driven it into the ground quite yet.

Equalizer I can agree with, but Matpat was talking about actually normal people who suddenly find themselves into extreme situations, not just ones who appear normal. Crank is about a hitman, Nobody is about about former assassin, and John Wick... well, that one is obvious. They appear normal, but they already have experience in that industry the movie is focusing on. Equalizer is the only one who seems to be about a normal guy.

Suddenly realizing this this is going to be my "back in my day moment" I love the movies more than anything, I would go almost every weekend before the pandemic and I agree I feel like movies just aren't the same anymore there are so few original ideas and everything is so big now that its really hard to create wow factor that has people running to the theatres. I was living in a movie golden age and I didnt even know it, that makes me feel so old.

Lived through much of the 90s with early 2000s seen as the Dark Age of movies with some exceptions. The writing was on the wall when the MCU opted for interconnected stuff across the board for me. Others didn’t plan that far ahead.

And for Eva, I'd say I noticed a similar decline in enticement for my love of video games as I get older. I don't think games are any better or worse than when I was a child, but I have far more going on in my life. I have a family now, have had a job for the last 10 years, finding and starting a relationship took time, family events and holidays. Now I also attempt to learn far more than I have over the past 14 years since graduating. My time is far more limited and has more value. Spending time watching new movies is less appealing to me, especially when I don't know how much I will or won't enjoy it.
I hope theatres don't die any time soon.
I never got to see movies in theatres too much as a kid because my parents thought it was too expensive. The only times I got to see movies in theatres was if my daycare took me or my friend invited me to a movie night.
From what I remember the first movie I saw in theatres was a Harry Potter movie (don't remember which one) that my daycare took us to which was awful 'cause I was much too young for it and the movie gave me nightmares!
My first animated movie from what I remember was Up and my first 2D animated movie was Wolfwalkers which was gorgeous to watch on the big screen!
Makes me wish that theatre reruns of older movies was a bigger thing. I would LOVE to see The Lion King or Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron on the big screen since I missed out on those experiences due to being the wrong age (wasn't even born yet for TLK) and having parents that wouldn't take me no matter what.

I started working at a movie theater a couple months ago, around the time Shang-chi was still playing for a little longer before it was gone, waiting until Eternals premiered and eventually Spider-Man No Way Home. The theaters were full when it was time for MCU films and now since it's going to be a while until Doctor Strange 2, they're usually empty. No one really comes to watch the other films being released. Imagining that situation with the 'IF' Disney stopped releasing Marvel films, I'm sure that no one would even want to visit the movie theaters. It could lead to the eventual closing of theaters. That would be horrible, especially for me, and not just because of losing my job, but the theater experience would not exist anymore, and watching MCU films is what got me interested in studying Film.
I can assure you, at the very least, MCU won't end until there's Kevin Feige (president of Marvel). He has been responsible for building this interconnected sophisticated universe, and he has lots and lots of stories to tell. After he steps down, or retires, I don't know what the future would be for MCU.

This theory is actually accurate, at least for me. Went out to watch movies during the pandemic only to watch Marvel movies as I am a big fan. However, this experience provided me enough comfort level to actually go out and watch other movies in the theater. Without MCU, wouldn't have gone out to the theaters and would have just waited for everything else to come to streaming services.
I think that that is what the "too big to fail" phrace means
I went out for mostly things like Kong vs godzilla. No way home was the only MCU movie I went out for, and that's Sony's.

There is a problem with this theory: it doesn't take into consideration that the downfall of such a big company would take a long period of time to happen. Yes, if it happened suddenly all the things that were said in the video would happen. But if it happened over let's say a decade or two it wouldn't make such an impact
Marvel could definitely tank suddenly and that would absolutely destroy the theater industry. A few years ago, we had YA films bringing in bank. They disappeared almost instantly. It's possible.
Disney and most larger studios will survive, but the theaters themselves could disappear in a snap. It wouldn't take a decade. If it happens (or more realistically, when it happens), it's going to happen rapidly.

This kind of reminds me of another film Theory matpat made about a year ago it was called how Disney ruined the streaming and he explained how if Netflix has bad luck they won't be able to recover. Now look at this, he's basically saying if this MCU thing doesn't keep handing out the theatre industry itself might not be able to recover so at this point it's streaming vs. Theatres when before I feel they could have co-existed, then covid hit, theaters relevancy has been declining since ever since then and probably will never make it back to the same height that used to. So now it has to directly compete with streaming services. And I love going to the theatre I still do I always have but at the end of the day I don't think theatres are going to survive that much longer sure might take a while but they won't last forever that's inevitable at this point. Well, the reason I like going to the theater for a marvel movie is the theatre makes it more immersive. You got the big explosions, the great CGI and the drama and comedy. It's a nice well rounded package of a movie.
not to mention the amazing soundtrack really makes you feel more immersed in the story. When "portals" started playing in Avengers Endgame, it easily became one of the most memorable soundtracks in the entire MCU.

@@stevenscott2136 well a war movie can be great in the theatre and be realistic, but when I go to the movies i wanna be immersed in a world and I want to enjoy the communal experience of watching a movie in a crowd. You don't really get the most out of that unless you have a really bombastic movie with lots of explosions and big moments, I mean using endgame as an example that movie is full of moments that make you cheer or gasp or cry, that's what I want out of a movie experience even if its just a portion of that. doesn't have to be as big as endgame was.
As a person who's never really gone to the theatres, I went to see Rise Of Skywalker in the cinema, and it's made the movie a favourite of mine. Not just because of the movie, but because of the experience of going out with family to enjoy something special, something we don't often do. Even if cinemas are doing down-hill, I bet a lot of us will remember the experiences we've all had.
Depends on the movie, though. If the movie in question makes for a good time at the theaters, then I think it'll be fondly remembered, even if the movie itself isn't all that great. Case in point, Avatar and IT part 2(for me at least).
You mentioned Rise of Skywalker. I saw that movie in theaters opening weekend, and it was the first time I felt like I wasted my time and money. The movie is just that unbearable.

Yeah! I love the experience of going to the movies, and it has a special place in my heart because it was how and why i met my best friend!
But the cinema experience can be ruined by misbehaving people and when someone much taller than you comes to sit the seat front of you and the you can only see his back not the movie. This has happened to me couple of times when i was in the cinema. So when you can stream the movie from your home you have noone to interupt or there is no one to become an obstacle what could prevent you for seeing the movie.
Marvel is indeed "Too Big, to fail" That's the reason why Sony which was reluctant in sharing one Spiderman now shared all three and all the old villians, the entire hollywood needs Marvel and other theme park movies or 3d imax movies should exist in order for the cinema to exist, or concept of cinema theatre in a pandemic period won't survive.
I really enjoyed this theory, especially how it makes since when you look at Disney’s other properties when it comes to theatrical releases:
Take Pixar’s Luca for example, Disney released it only on their streaming service because they new people wouldn’t feel motivated to get out of the house to watch a movie they have no other context of besides what they see in the trailers(a simple story about sea monsters that can turn human on land).
You could argue this had to do with the pandemic however, but with Pixar releasing another one of their newest movies, Turning Red, straight to streaming, you began to see a pattern.
Now with their new release of Pixar’s Lightyear they know people will feel more motivated to go to theater for a character they already have so much context about.
The same can be said for Disney’s Encanto, although barely anyone was talking about it before it released on Disney plus, they new people would be familiar with Lin Manuel Miranda and his music, so they risked putting it in theaters before it blew up on Disney plus .

I don't really agree with you on this one. The MCU is doing a really good job on Disney+. As you already stated part of what Disney is doing is making a brand to sell toys, disney land and other stuff. Disney+ can do that also and with SO much content it allows them to make money off it while providing a good deal with pretty much everyone. I suspect the MCU would survive theaters.

Speaking of movies and evolving trends in media, I've noticed that we're seeing more Japanese titles hitting the big screen in western countries. Dragon Ball Super movies sprung up over the last 10 years, which have been followed by younger franchises like My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer, and Jujitsu Kaisen.
I'm interested in theories about this trend and how eastern media is gradually changing western viewing habits.

Good point. It may be because of a couple of factors. 1. Watching animation is becoming more socially acceptable for adults in part because of the success of the MCU and "nerd" culture. 2. People are beginning to realize that the Japanese have been doing genres like superpowered action adventure more intelligently and innovatively than Western creators for years. Just look at how My Hero Academia approaches the concept of superhero storytelling vs. what you see in the West.

Let’s be honest here, many of us like a lot of the marvel films but for a long time now marvel has been in a place where they haven’t really had to prove anything. By proxy they haven’t had much of a reason to TRY as well. If that day comes where they actually have to try harder at the things they lack in it’s ok because they’re big enough to the point where I don’t think we have to face a literal goodbye to the movies altogether. They can afford the humility and that’s why we need studios like dc to really give them a run for their money.

After seeing Endgame, I had the thought that the MCU was done. That there was no other way that they could possibly top themselves.

Exactly. I didn’t even go to the movies much as a kid. But when the MCU dropped around high school, I immediately was in the theater for every movie. I’d still go see other franchises (007, HP, etc) but in my mind, they’re just not as worth it. MCU is the only franchise that gets me super excited to go to the movies, and sometimes that excitement carries over into non-superhero products lol

I'm an animator, currently studying animation to make my own studio and I've joked about getting big enough to be bigger than Disney. Of course I never thought too hard about it but what you said about it... It's possible, all it would take is one incredible movie to topple over Disney and put yourself at the top. And I've seen what smaller creators can do, I've seen people make things better than Disney, but fear is holding them back. Now I think I might try that "be bigger than Disney" idea

My friend and I were having a similar conversation not too long ago. Eventually it’s going to get to a point where
-viewing movies and understanding them is no longer possible without an almost encyclopedic knowledge of the MCU (which, let me remind you, goes back to 2008-14 years at this point).
-Marvel runs out of relevant characters people are actually willing to go to movies and see. We’re already seeing this. Seriously, how many people knew the Guardians of the Galaxy or Ant-Man before you watched the movies? Can you tell me one big bad from Moon Knight without looking it up?
Moon Knight is kind of his own big bad since it is a much more psychologically-driven Jekyll and Hyde situation but I get your point.
If Marvel keeps the same format they've done so far keeping up isn't going to be hard, you could literally just watch the major team up movies and you'd know all the important info. For example lets say you didn't watch doctor strange and jumped to Infinity war all you need to know is that he's a wizard hero that helps the avengers and then from there if you like him, you watch his movie if not you can still enjoy Infinity War.
As for relevant characters thats not gonna be a problem any time soon as there are still tons the MCU hasn't tapped into or like you brought up with Ant-Man/GOTG they'll make them relevant.
You know, the 18 year run of constant Star Trek Films and TV shows that started in 1987 with the premiere of Star Trek The Next Generation came to an abrupt end in 2005 with the cancellation of the most recent show of the time Star Trek: Enterprise.
The official reason that was given was that franchise fatigue had killed interest in the brand, and while that may be partially true since 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis had severely underperformed at the box office, just barely making it's budget back, there was another lesser known reason why that run had come to an end.
Former CEO of CBS Les Moonves just didn't like or see the appeal of Star Trek or Science Fiction in general, so he had the plug pulled on Star Trek: Enterprise as it was starting to find it's footing under a new showrunner, For reference (and I might be wrong on some details) CBS had bought UPN (The United Paramount Network) a few years prior, likely near the end of Star Trek Voyager's run, but it seems like Les Moonves didn't exactly do his research into the shows his company would be acquiring as a result.
By the time that Star Trek: Enterprise had started to find it's own voice following the replacement of Rick Berman as showrunner in favor of Manny Coto, The Underperformance of Star Trek Nemesis and the Arc fatigue from the "Temporal Cold War" and "Xindi Conflict" stories had supposedly killed off a lot of interest in the brand and pretty much served as the final nails in the coffin for the 18 years of Star Trek Content and Star Trek Enterprise would end in it's 4th Season with the worst series finale in Star Trek history, "These Are the Voyages" which was more of a glorified TNG holodeck episode than an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise, having brought in Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis as Commander Riker and Counselor Troi respectively and framing the episode around the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation's Seventh Season episode "The Pegasus".
Three years after Enterprise's cancellation and a year before the JJ Abrams reboot, Star Trek: The Experience, an attraction that used to be held at the Las Vegas Hilton shut its doors for good and was quietly dismantled.
Star Trek thrives when American Society is optimistic and that hasn’t been the case since, well, since before the W. Bush Administration.
I dunno if I'd be as rosy about how Phase 4 is doing. There have been a few different highlights for different people, but NWH was the *first* time everyone was excited. It was Phase 4's first big success while everything else has been so-so.

I can relate to what Mat is saying. The last time I went to a movie theatre was the opening week of Endgame and now after this two years I went to see No Way Home. That got me thinking I only went to the theatres for MCU movies.
I am honestly also cheering on the MCU; I don’t like spending so much time on TH-cam, insta, etc; therefore I want movie theaters to thrive, it’s easier to not pull out my phone in a theater and fully immerse myself into the film. Not to mention that movies have always been a large part of my life and it’s easier for me to go and see something I haven’t seen before at a theater rather than turning down a chance to watch a favorite of mine for the gazillionth time instead of the new thing.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, one of my favorite things to do is go to the cinema. I personally don’t have any social media because they aren’t for me but it really has to do with the addiction and corruption it can cause with many. Anyway, the point is, I’m a huge fan of the MCU, so I’ve seen every show on Disney+ and most of the time this year, I’ve seen every movie on opening night. And I absolutely loved all of them but especially NWH because I had been looking at leaks and rumors for a whole year before it came out. It’s a masterpiece, and though this may seem like a stretch, it’s the best superhero movie of all time in my eyes. The unity of the three Peters and celebration of 20 years of Spider-Man is fantastic.

Hey, I have a question/theory idea: Me and my siblings disagree on the stakes in Eternals. [Spoiler warning, I guess]
Tiamut was going to burst out of the ground and destroy the world- but looking at them, you can see their head and their hand at the same time. Since the horizon is approximately 3 miles away, this implies Tiamut is smaller than that. I think Tiamut is too small to destroy the planet entirely. They would totally cause an apocalypse, but my siblings and I disagree on the scale. I think it would be along the lines of the dinosaur asteroid, or climate change, while they think it would be more along the lines of Alderaan. There is a scene where this is shown to Sersi by Arishem, but I think it's hyperbole, because when we see Tiamut in person, they are WAY smaller. So here's my question: *Is Tiamut big enough to cause the Earth to explode? What repercussions would the world see if Sersi didn't abort them?* I think they totally could have removed Tiamut from the Earth without destroying it, if they went slow enough, because Tiamut can probably fly like Arishem. I would like to see your professional opinion, though. (Also, not quite relevant to the question, but I think if celestials are powered up by intelligent life, we can afford to cut out the middleman and create those "untold billions of lives who will never be born" ourselves. But that's just my opinion.)
Let's just say, due to busy family life (as well as a global pandemic), the last two movies I went to cinema for in the last 12+ months were Eternals and No Way Home.
You nailed it when you said if Marvel fails right now, a lot of people who potentially could go watch a fun action/fantasy movie will no longer feel interested/invested enough to bother. And that's exactly my case.

One thing I noticed is that ever since Disney owned Blue Sky, the last movie Blue Sky released, Disney released a star wars film in the same month. Blue Sky released ‘Spies in disguise’ on Dec 4 2019, didn’t do very well, Disney released ‘Star wars rise of skywalker’ December 20 2019, which did fairly well. It’s hard to beat a Star Wars film which is why I think ‘Spies in disguise’ didn’t do very well.
I dont know why people hold blue sky studios on this pedestal when they were milking ice age for the majority of its time

I'm hoping it's still going strong in the 2040's. The MCU has been amazingly consistent, cinema and the superhero genre would lose one of it's current best parts.

I love watching movies in the theater, i love how loud it is and how big the screen is. I cant get a big screen like that at my house, or have it be that loud without the cops coming over for a noise complaint, its just a whole different experience. There are some down sides like someone too tall sitting in front of you or someone being loud and annoying but other than that i enjoy going to the movie theaters.
I have an idea for a theory, how rich is shield, like they have tons of the planes that can become invisible, and just so much more, I’ve wanted to know this for a while (mcu)
Good idea
This got me thinking about how I love going to the movies despite being very introverted and generally not wanting to go outside. My best friend and I used to go to the theater 30 mins away from our campus just to see all the movies we both loved, and sometimes we'd watch the same movie twice in a week. Something I want to get back into is going to the movies by myself instead of waiting for people to watch something with me.
Another note is that while Shang-Chi didn't do well in the box office compared to most other Marvel movies, it break a record for Thursday releases and earn $8.8 million. The number meant a lot to the Asian community, where 8 is associated with prosperity and good fortune. The movie may not have excelled in the way Spiderman: NWH did, but Shang-Chi did make a large community, including myself, feel seen for the first time in Hollywood superhero movies.
No way home is an event film on the level of an avengers movie so i wouldnt compare it. I think shang chi would have made way more if not for the pandemic and china refusing to show any disney movies.

This is interesting concerning the summer of 2023 movies released. A lot of these competitions brought people to the movie theaters for fun. Media glorified theaters with spiderman atsv and “barbenheimer”. Barbie vs Oppenheimer releasing on the same day was appealing to most of the media. Seeing both even if they didn’t fit the suggested audience. It is truely interesting how marketing can change the game
The marketing made people want to dress up for the movies. Expressing their dedication to the movies. Even I went to the Barbie movie dressed up. It just looked so appealing.
i don’t think movie theatres will die tbh, they’re always changing, and it’s a fun way to hangout with friends and make memories together.

I’ve really started to gain a greater appreciation for the MCU now that I’ve started to make my way through as many of the non-MCU Marvel movies as I can find - very few come even close to the same quality of storytelling. There’s definitely a secret sauce that I doubt will be going away anytime soon (unless Feige quits or retires or something, which I don’t even want to think about what could happen after that)
Basically the Blade trilogy, Fox X-Men, Tobey Maguire Spider-Man and The Punisher movies are the good ones.

@@marcusanark2541 I personally think the TASM Spider-Man movies with Andrew Garfield are good too. I’ve loved his iteration of the character for years and I’m glad a lot of people are giving him more love and appreciation now because they had unfortunately been disliked by many. I believe Andrew deserves a TASM 3 to complete his trilogy like his brothers have.

Ultimately, it is the quality of content that makes Disney so great. I find myself with tears streaming down my cheeks at practically EVERY Disney movie. Old ones, new ones, sports movies, musicals, animated, live action, TV show finales, etc. (I never cried during Disney Channel shows or the made-for-TV movies from our childhood lol but those have a different feel, as do the red-headed step children of Disney known as the sequels to major titles like Lion King 2 and others). Disney has some kind of formula that has hacked my brain. I would assume many people feel the same way. Disney has a secret sauce. I would be devastated if Disney stopped making movies, especially MCU movies and shows. I hope there is much more to come, and we see the original Avengers make cameos/appearances once again. Long live the MCU! I hope this video isn’t a sign of the beginning of the end.

It’s funny, I saw no way home in theaters and while there’s nothing like the experience, we saw venom within the aftercredits of the movie and decided to go see venom 2. This put the poster for the most recent scream (which was amazing) in my face and I saw that. If there hadn’t been a marvel movie I wouldn’t have seen the other two.
I actually very much do not want movie theaters to shut down. On top of being excellent ways to get out of the house and spend an afternoon they are very communal experiences I tend to only rarely get at home. It's like a real bonding experience to experience the same thing en mass with dozens of other people

Marvel comics has been around for almost 100 years, and they have had ups and downs but there have been consistent incredible events, and continuous modernization.
Momentum comes in waves, scale ebbs and flows, and there are stories of all scale and sizes that remain relevant.
Some of the best comics EVER written have been made in the last 5 years.
There are plenty of amazing Marvel stories to tell, whether or not it's on streaming or in a theater. And plenty of merchandise of sell.

The experience of seeing a movie in a theater is something that can’t really be matched. I watched Dune in IMAX and then I watched it on HBO max and the theater legitimately heightened the experience. I love the hype up for the TH-cam brand but I don’t like to see bashing of the craftsmanship created to be experienced on the silver screen. I am biased though, I love spending my Friday nights in those sticky movie theaters.

@@eyesofthecervino3366 Absolutely nothing. Renner has been with marvel since 2011, and neither he, nor hawkeye got the spotlight even in the guy's own show. They gave everything to kate. Lucky the pizza dog, the "he mada a different call" moment, everything.
I love that theory so much....but with Disney it's gonna be hard to take down something like Marvel. Them have s bunch of comics to base movies on and still making. The hundreds of characters Stan Lee made. There's still a lot more to see from Marvel. But hey that's just a theory, a film theory.
The source materials will never be adapted straight or faithfully. We've been waiting for decades now.
@@Azrael_Garou I think that the MCU is supposed to be a separate universe from the other universes in the comic. Therefore, none of the films will be exactly the same, or mostly similar, to the comics.
I honestly think the only thing that could even rival Marvel at this point is Star Wars, but Disney owns them as well. Yes, the sequel trilogy was a disaster. But it's still a massive franchise, with a massive franchise and they've been building a lot of good will as of late with Mando, Grogu, Obi-Wan, Boba etc.
I've enjoyed the Disney + show from Marvel, but I'd be lying if I said I can't wait for Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Me personally, I go to the theater specifically FOR that group experience, and I'll try to see a film opening day to get maximum hype from the audience. The streaming option for me is dependent on the movie. I've had movies like Godzilla vs Kong or The Suicide Squad hit HBO Max where I could easily watch it, but I still go to the trouble of seeing it in theaters.
As someone looking to go into the film industry, the decline of movie theaters is a very real thing and something I’m very wary of. Unless something’s a mega franchise like the MCU, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to compete with streaming services and watch at home movies that are of the same production quality for cheaper. I think the moviegoing experience could turn into a thing of the past that only exists for the entertainment of the wealthy, sort of like the theatre.

@@grabble7605 TheatRE, not theatER. Very discreet difference right there, but theater refers to the place shows are shown, theatre referring to stage plays, Broadway, live performances and such. And the Doctor here is right - if you think cinema tickets are pricey, you should check out the Broadway box offices. Entertainment of that medium went from being a common, every day source of entertainment to something only big shots could afford. As a theatre kid, this makes me very, very disappointed.

Well it looks like Marvel knows this since they're putting some more effort in their games, last year the Guardians of the galaxy game was reported to be shockingly good, Marvel's Miles Morales also was amazing and the second part for the Spider-man game is coming with strong expectations so... Marvel could still have some good cards under their sleeves

the miles morales and sequel to spiderman games are both sony things, do not think marvel or disney gets any money out of them.
