what auditioning for a musical is really like

- Hi guys! I made this video to help shed some light on the musical theatre audition process. This is something I am very familiar with now but when I was first starting out auditioning for shows I wish I had a video like this. If you have questions or video suggestions please leave them down below and I will try to respond to them asap. Also don’t forget to guess what show I’m in!!

I was obsessed with the musical and songs, but then I saw and it’s still stuck in my head after 2 months so you kinda don’t have to listen to it after you see the show. if you see the show, you’ll probably stop listening to it after you see it.

i’ve gone through so many auditions, when i auditioned for Mary Poppins, we had to sing in front of about 100 parents and i was constantly shaking. guys, if your auditioning for musical, i recommend for you to have confidence. you will do amazing, i promise.

my casting type is sidekick/comic relief. what do i wear? a goddamn clown costume?
i know this is a joke but: funky socks, not skinny jeans (more of a straight leg), preferably a funky but cool button up, but anthing with a fun patern is great! if you have no paterned shirts, any bright color is good! for shoes: either sneakers or boots, nothing fancy!
I know how challenging and frustrating it can be when thinking about "type." What has helped me is to shift that mindset from type to what kind of stories I want to tell that way it doesn't box me into something specific which can create so much anxiety and stress. Show up to the auditions as you. Let the casting decide from that point on.
I love how you say something difficult or bad and then say “but it’s ok.” Your so positive and beautiful!

i got in the musical this year and the first time i heard the instrumental was during my audition and i ran off the stage crying,, bUTT I GOT A CALLBACK and only a couple freshman got in sooo prepare for the audition my dudes.
Ok so weird story but stick with me:
I auditioned for a community production of dear Evan Hansen ( yeah I know ) and that was a year ago and I had just found your channel and then I forgot about it and now I found it again!
I absolutely LOVED this video. I remember the days of prepping for an audition SO FAR OUT and now it's like "oh, yeah, I'm singing this...right?". I know it's been a year since you made this video, and I hope you're more confident and excited about auditioning! When you get to NYC (if that's the path for you), you can go to ECC Dancer calls and get to dance FIRST if that's more your thing! Also, if you haven't worked with an accompanist before your audition, try PianoTrax! I love them and they've bailed me out SO many times. Another thing is that even here in NYC, the accompanists get you. If you tell them you haven't run this piece with a piano yet, they'll often adjust their play style to give you your melody line a little bit for the first bars or so and are super, super great. Break all the legs in future endeavors!

Here’s a Q: Is dancing mandatory for all auditions? And if so, how advanced should you be? I’d love to go on stage but I have no dancing experience. Thanks! 💛

Not necessarily. It usually depends on whether or not the show has a lot of dancing in it, and even then some characters don't need to dance. I'd recommend starting with community theatre or school productions, and see how you like that. I've been to auditions with no dancing, some theatre companies just teach a small combination, and some even choreograph a whole song. It doesn't matter how advanced you are if you, but it is helpful to be able to move well. (It is really helpful to be able to dance though. If you were looking to get started dancing I would recommend starting with a ballet class for a good technical foundation and then look into some jazz classes. Some dance studios even offer musical theatre dance classes!)
They should tell you if there will be a dancing audition. And they will basically teach you a dance that won’t be too hard unless it’s a really dancey musical with intricate choreography

Yo after our spring production, our theater legit has auditions for the next run the VERY NEXT DAY. Thankfully though, we only do a musical production like- once a year maybe two if we're lucky

how do you actually know when and where auditions are? do you have to have an agent? or do you always just go to open call auditions?

U can usually find audition sign ups on social media..

Same. It's always hard finding a great audition song let along an entire collection of songs. What I find helps me is just to start with one song that I really love and use it for every audition. It might not be perfect or exactly the right style of at least it allows you the opportunity to go to the audition and show up for that open call.

I remember the first musical I did was set in the 1910s and I got the lead girl which was a child. I was in *fifth grade*. I was so confused when I got my script with jemima Potts on it. But it was fun and got me into musical theater which is the *best*. I'm so happy that I got that role and launched my way of life in a whole new way!

I remember auditioning for my first ever musical in a creative arts centre, we had many processes, such as duet, chemistry of 2 people to play characters and one was someone who was actually committed to do the musical because apparently one person quit on the last week

My school auditions are everyone sitting on risers, 1 person standing up and singing the part of the song we all have to sing (oh my god Hakuna Matata is low-key getting annoying at this point) and then we do the dance we learned and then get our names called for callbacks. I had my first audition today and almost passed out. I don't really think I got a big role but at this point I already have such a low self-esteem that it isn't shocking. I'll probably update this when the cast list comes out to see if maybe, just maybe one of the roles I wanted.

You’re never too young or too old to be in theatre:) most theatres have a 6+ age range:)

I auditioned for a west end musical School Of Rock and they said that they would tell us 1 month before if we got an audition. I thought that I wasn’t going to the audition but then they emailed me 4 days before the audition. It was a crazy mess 😄😁

Just got cast as Mary poppins and I fell into a TH-cam hole sharing other peoples excitement. I literally have a “uniform” that I wear to every audition and just slightly change the style/ color for show
WHY DO PEOPLE ALWAYS SAY TO DRESS LIKE THE CHARACTER YOUR GOING FOR!!! NO! Dress nice like a dress and a jump suit. Something flattering.

Kenzie R. See that’s what people think but it’s actually preferred that you dress nice for the roll. If it’s both nice and matches the character without going to crazy, great! But usually (at least in the professional world) you always wanna dress formal.
