Thank you for the recommendation! That was the first Gene Ammons record I recall seeing, years ago before I was exploring jazz. It's next up on my purchase list for sure. Thanks so much for watching!
Lol, he can be very persuasive! I'm so glad I caught that video, because I might not have been prompted to try this out. I had not heard Gene Ammons before this and now I'm looking at getting another of his in the series. Glad you are loving it too.
Ive been listening Gene Ammons a lot lately. I like to describe his music as Sultry Reverb Drenched Sax. Im with you this style of Jazz is right up my alley. Also love Ike Quebec
That is a perfect description! I think I would like some Ike Quebec - I sampled the latest Blue Note Classic, Heavy Soul, but I'm really interested in Soul Samba. I really hope that comes out at some point. On the basis of Boss Tenor, I'll definitely be getting The Soulful Moods title from the Prestige Series. Thanks for checking out the video!
Hi Chance, I was the same, never really hearing about Gene Ammons before this, but I was very surprised that I liked it so much. Glad you are too. Thank you for watching and commenting. Hope all is well.
Hi Alfredo! Good choice, it's very impressive. Actually everything I've picked from this series has been wonderful. I've got about six titles so far. Thank you so much for watching and commenting.
@@ThePressingMatters I'm curious to know which other ones you went for. I had recent OJCs for a chunk of the better known titles (the Miles titles, Coltrane's Lush Life...) , so I didn't splurge on upgrading those, and concentrated on getting a few I'd never heard of before like Out of the Forrest, The Tenor Scene, and Mobley's Message (what a gorgeous album cover that one has). I also got Saxophone Colossus, one of the records that got me into jazz.
@@ThePressingMatters I ordered Tenor Madness as well (beautiful cover too!) and another of the Lightnin' Hopkins titles (The Blues of...) - but I think I might have missed out on Bluesy Burrell unless more become available during the year. Thanks for sharing!
@@AlfredoRichner Great choices! Yeah the Tenor Madness cover design is a classic. Looks great on this reissue. I'm due to try another blues title, so maybe that Lightnin' Hopkins. If you do get that one please message me back here and tell me what you think!
nailed it again Scott. I remember buying this in about 196508 --was always one of my favorited.. This reissue is AMAZING~-even Canadian Sunset came off great ( a boring tune id not handled right--it is here!)...-not much Jug did that wasn't so soulful shame is spent so much time in prison... but that's the way it was back then.... thanks for another good one!--JG
Thanks, and I was too surprised how much I liked Canadian Sunset. I have the tune on an old Living Stereo LP, probably the hit version. Here they handle it well and it sounds fresh and interesting. Don't know too much about his personal troubles, that really is a shame.
Scott: Great pick for the Sunday Morning Jazz Pick, or any other day or time for that matter. Chad is the ultimate salesman. I too, bought this LP after his recent video. I also had picked up Gene Ammons Nice An' Cool and The Soulful Moods Of Gene Ammons based on another video he did several months ago. I have been picking up various titles in the Prestige Series as the become available. I have 21 stereo titles and 15 mono titles. You captured the essence of the LP. Ammons sax playing is so dynamic. On the first song he lays off for a minute or so and then when he does come in I jumped! His sax is in the left channel with a lot of reverb in the right. He often sounds "in the room", like he is sitting about a foot in front of my left speaker. When he is playing the soundstage is big, bigger than my room with the reverb factored in. There are several other "Wow!" moments when he follows solos by other members of the band. IMHO there are no bad songs on this LP. I do have one criticism, more like at pet peeve of mine. Like many early stereo recordings everything is hard panned to the left and right channels. But throughout the record the sax is ALWAYS on the left but the bass, drums congas and piano change sides. I find this unsettling particularly where it is the musicians remain the same. It is not just this record that is guilty of this, many early stereo records are guilty of this. As Chad says: "Buy now or cry later."
Great to hear from you Jim! Many excellent points in your comment. Yes, Chad is quite the salesman, but I could tell he was honestly impressed with this particular record. I'm just a few titles into this series, and I'm taking it slow, but each one has been great. Once I streamed this I knew it would become a favorite. Many "wow" moments throughout for sure. The early stereo issues on these recordings can be an issue, but I have to say it doesn't bother me as much as it seems it does for others. Maybe it's my setup, or room but I get an even enough spread of sound on most. The switching of positions is odd though I must admit. Will probably explore another Prestige title soon. Thanks for the great informative comment as always.
@@ThePressingMatters Agreed. I don't mind the hard panned stereo most of the time, but the band members moving around while others stay put is a bit disturbing. It takes me out of the moment. It is not like the piano can easily get up and just wander around the stage. I might suggest you try Hank Mobley / Al Cohn / John Coltrane / Zoot Sims - Tenor Conclave. It is a fun listen. It isn't so much a cutting contest, but a mutual admiration society. And there is a lot there to be admired.
Scott, This is the perfect Sunday Morning Jazz Pick. I too, saw Chad's video on this record and decided to buy it. Wow! It is one of my favorites. I am enjoying all of my Prestige mono reissues and was not going to get any of the stereo's, but this record is a highlight. Anyone watching your video should take heed. Get this record now. Once this sells out, the prices will soar...
Hi Rob! We all know Chad is a good salesman :-) But when I saw the video, I could sense he was truly passionate about this one and he was spot on. It really is a standout and I'm so glad that I took his advice! I think you're probably right - this series and this record in particular will be a highly sought after group of recordings when it finally wraps up. Thanks for your comment!
Great review Scott! Congrats! I have several copies of this including (surely) the original 45rpm Chad did way back when from the Prestige Series done by Kevin Gray & Steve Hoffman. I think I’m going I’ll got fetch my copies and take them for a spin!
Thank you, That 45 must be amazing. If you find it, keep it around for my next visit which won't be long from now. I'd say beginning of September we can revisit the Hana ML.
I'm listening again today, and if anything I'm even more enamored with it! Glad you secured a copy. This series won't last forever and I'm adding one a month to my collection. Soulful Moods may be up for my next one! Thanks for watching! Take care!
I don't "exaggerate" buying records anymore either. I've never heard it put that way, but maybe that's a good way to put it. $35 to $80 here and $40 to $100+ there = one heck of a lot of money when tallying up all you spent. The things you could have done with that money instead. Big things. The greatest advice is to stop gathering for a while & test the waters, and actually try to sell some lps for collectible prices. I think in most cases you be distraught at how hard it is to get a good price. Having more records than you can listen to enough times in one lifetime is not rational. And having more lps than you would be able to sell in 3 lifetimes I don't think is the thing to do. To each his own.
Dealers with thousands of customers, in all reality, are going to be able to sell records a hundred times easier than individual sellers. A lot of records have grossly inflated worth. Just one example: in either The Absolute Sound or Stereophile one of their writers claimed that a sealed Mofi of the Jazz lp by Ry Cooder was worth $500. I had it for 2 years and never could find anyone who would go $150 on it. Which is what I paid. Looking back, my mistake was I did a little too much gathering and too little testing the waters while I was gathering. That advice would have helped me; and I hope it helps others.
@@sidesup8286 I can clearly see your point. Yes, last month was a bit more than others. It‘s right to keep the balance.
