According to my Lights Out liner notes, Weinstock turned the studio lights off to achieve a relaxed vibe for the players, remembering the effect it had for Miles Davis’s Blue Haze. The cover photo was shot during the recording of the title track. Lights were back on for all the other tracks on the album. Great vid, you guys!
I caught this episode late, but glad I did. I’m anxious to hear “All Mornin’ Long” by The Red Garland Quintet. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these APP reissues.
Love it guys you three picked some killers Dolphy’s output is way ahead of its time my top 5 1. Eric Dolphy - Out There 2 Tommy Flanagan - Overseas 3 Kenny Dorham -Quiet Kenny 4 Elmo Hope Sextet - Informal Jazz 5 Hank Mobley - Mobleys Message I need to get that Gene Ammons he’s an amazing bluesy player
I'm glad Mike included The Tenor Scene, that's actually my number 1! Keeping in mind that I only picked up 16 of these and I didn't get some because I already have other pressings, my top 5 list is: (1) Johnny Griffin & Lockjaw Davis - The Tenor Scene; (2) Kenny Burrell - Bluesy Burrell; (3) Gene Ammons - Boss Tenor; (4) Tommy Flanagan - Overseas; and (5) Miles Davis - Relaxin. Also, don't neglect Jimmy Witherspoon - Evenin' Blues. I have an original of that record, but I LOVE Jimmy Witherspoon, he's one of my favorite blues singers. He's more in the jazz, jump blues tradition and sang with Count Basie, Jay McShann, Ben Webster, etc.
Great presentation, Bums.. I'll like to fill some holes in my collection, but I'm looking at $ 65 per record here in Europe, so I'll probably not buy all that I want... Thanks for the video anyway 😁 / Claus.
Great episode as usual A simple question To Mike, from witch website do you find the printed ”inserts” with the record covers that you put in your plastic sleeves,i have a lot o 2Lp collections with a different cover Greetings from Sweden
@@JazzBums Sorry, I haven't compared them and have not listened to reach out them enough times to say. The Miles Davis and Coltrane titles are great though as are the Sonny Rollins. But I think I need to listen to everything more to say.
My 5 best are 1) Eric Dolphy - Outward Bound 2) Miles Davis - Steamin 3) Gene Ammons - Boss Tenor 4) Arnett Cobb - Party Time 5) Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus
Those are great, indeed. I have procrastinator in a few versions, Bobby is great, but sound wise, in my system, I stand behind Bags. I think it's just a matter of preference, plus it's mono and stereo. I think in Bags they achieve almost a stereo effect in a mono cut, which to me was very impactful. Of course Bobby Hutcherson is one of, if not the greatest on vibes, and Procrastinator is a great recording. Marginal difference. if you have the chance to listen to the MMJ, it's even better than the OG. Again, musically I prefer Bobby 300% but the sound of Bags Groove to me is hard to beat. Thanks for reminding us of Procrastinator, gotta listen to it tonight!
Top 5 Analogue Production’s Prestige Titles in no particular order: Tommy Flanagan - Overseas The Red Garland Quintet - All Mornin’ Long Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus Booker Ervin - The Freedom Book Miles Davis Quintet Relaxin’ First one out: Jimmy Forest - Out of the Forest
“All Night Long” - exceptional jam session.
Really great one guys! Outward Bound is killer! It’s awesome that these are now readily available and you don’t have to spend a lot for them
Great video, guys. Nice relaxed discussion of these albums. Wish it was longer!

Thanks for watching! It is such a great record. Something about Red and Trane together was just perfect. - Chris
Good selection... Here's my five: Lush Life, Boss Tenor, Young Bloods, Out for Lunch, Saxophone Colossus, Steamin'
Out for Lunch is a Blue Note not Prestige brilliant that it is.
Very useful overview, glad you did this! Thanks guys.
Great overview. I would never be able to choose, I like them all. Took me 8 years, but now complete.

Thanks! I actually make and print them myself, and use images and details from Discogs mostly - Mike
Jeez, I have almost 30 reissues from this series and almost none of your picks. Dang it!
lol, well what are your top 5?

2) Miles Davis - Steamin
3) Gene Ammons - Boss Tenor
4) Arnett Cobb - Party Time
5) Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus
My five would be John Coltrane with The Red Garland Trio, Bluesey Burrell with Coleman Hawkins, All Mornin' Long, Boss Tenor, and Steamin.
Solid picks
I guess Felipe has a listen to search for a new land, speaking of vibes and Bobby
Correction, Felipe, I meant procrastinator by Lee Morgan

Mike change the angle on your camera. Make it wider we can’t see the whole album you are showing.
Top 5 Analogue Production’s Prestige Titles in no particular order:
Tommy Flanagan - Overseas
The Red Garland Quintet - All Mornin’ Long
Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus
Booker Ervin - The Freedom Book
Miles Davis Quintet Relaxin’
First one out:
Jimmy Forest - Out of the Forest
I'm with you on Relaxin (and your other picks are great too). It seems like we're in the minority of people who prefer Relaxin over Steamin.
