Long time audiophile, music lover, vinyl enthusiast, reviewing and comparing pressings, equipment, and discussing various topics.
The Yes Album - Analogue Productions Atlantic 75 Series
Today I have a recap of my findings on a shootout of The Yes Album. I had four pressings of this classic Yes Album to compare:
1971 UK Plum Label
1977 US Specialty
2023 Rhino Deluxe
2024 Analogue Productions Atlantic 75
This evaluation was part of a shootout on David Bianco's Safe and Sound Texas Audio Excursion You Tube Channel. Link to that livestream playback here; th-cam.com/users/live1e_32mCpD8o?si=hoPYua13BlZg8j52
The new Analogue Productions Atlantic 75 Series release of The Yes Album was mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearant Audio from the original analog master tape, pressed at Quality Record Pressings and issued in a tip on old style double pocket jacket by Stoughton Printing. It is a 45rpm release on two 180gm records.
I've just been able to access high res digital files that were made on my system of three of the four pressings. Have a listen, preferably through your main system and see if you can hear the differences!

Billie Holiday Body and Soul - Three Great Masterings Of One Must Have Album
มุมมอง 3.1K16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Today I am revisiting the Billie Holiday Body and Soul album due to the arrival of a new edition from the Acoustic Sounds Verve Jazz Series. I had previously done a video early on in the channel when I compared the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab Anadisc Series release cut by Stan Ricker with the Analogue Production Verve 45 Series release cut by George Marino. At that time, my system was completely ...
RCA Victrola - A look at one of the great bargains in classical vinyl
มุมมอง 3.3K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
RCA Victrola is a budget label started by RCA Victor in the mid 1960's as a series that served to reissue many of the great recordings in the RCA Living Stereo catalog as well as important mono recordings. Many early stereo recordings that were only originally issued in mono made their debut in stereo on this label as well. RCA claimed that there was no difference in the quality of the records ...

Rhino High Fidelity Black Sabbath - Darkness or Light?

Rhino High Fidelity Black Sabbath Review The new release in the Rhino High Fidelity Series is Black Sabbath's self titled debut. It was limited to 5,000 numbered copies and has unfortunately sold out in record time. It was gone in five days, and has attracted flippers who are trying to make a buck by jacking it up to $150 and beyond. Hopefully there will be a non numbered pressing at some point...

Barbra Streisand Live At The Bon Soir is a legendary recording of Barbra captured to tape by Columbia Records in November 1962. Originally intended to be Barbra's debut on records, it was decided to go with a more polished studio album instead. This tape was shelved and was in a vault for 60 years, until Barbra decided it was time for the world to hear this incredible document. In celebration o...

Really looking forward to getting this one. Thanks for the wonderful review!
I'm looking forward to hearing all about it! Please let me know what you thought once you've got it!
Have to agree this one sounds excellent.
This is a fantastic album and AP have smashed it out of the park , I am so looking forward to the other yes and genesis titles. Scott I do love your reviews 👍😁
Thank you so much, I appreciate the feedback. I'm so glad to hear you are amazed too!
Scott, I totally agree and like Selling England, this pressing completely blew me away. You are spot on with your observations about the Clap, Tony Kaye's organ sounds, the Wurm, and all the rest. It's just as dramatic of a difference as you described. What Chad and co have done here makes me even more excited for the other Yes and Genesis titles.
You are right on. This album never sounded very good until today. Remarkable
It's odd to think it became so famous given the generally poor sound it had received. That says a lot about how musically compelling the record is, that it was able to connect with listeners of the day. We're very lucky to have this finally in this quality of sound.
I can’t wait to get this, such a fantastic piece of music, with the Atlantic 75 magic. The only thing I wish they had done was to, retrospectively, get a new album cover by Roger Dean. Great review!
Thanks! It's very exciting, finally you're going to hear what this recording was really capable of. You've got to return and let me know what you think!
is this one of thees high on dentist drugs videos ?
Nope that's sober excitement!
Hi Scott, typically wonderful review. I, too, love me some Billie. I have a 1981 French Pressing of Distingue Lovers. It's in Stereo, which I prefer. I bought it because I read somewhere it was pretty good. I like it a lot. I think AS put out a new stereo pressing of it. I should probably pick that up. I don't have the other 2 in the Trilogy. Here's my question: I have a VERY modest system and I'm thinking I should wait until I can upgrade my system to include a turntable that I can switch cartridges back and forth. I have bought a few Sam Records of Chet Baker, including one with Bobby Jaspar and one with Dick Twardazik. I've played them on my friend's system, (also stereo only,) which is much better than mine, and it sounded a bit flat. I mainly bought those Chet Bakers to have when I have a proper set up to play mono. I'll more than likely do the same with the other two in the Trilogy. Do you have a preference generally between stereo and mono, or does it depend on the artist/pressing. I enjoy your take and how you're very precise about describing the various aspect of the way the album sound, but never comes across as preachy or that you're a know-it-all. Anywho, until next time.....Johnny K.
Great review of one of the albums I really like. I have many versions of The Yes Allbum, including the recent AP 75 version. I fully agree with your review, spot on. A small sidenote - or trivia if you don't mind - about your highlight "Wurm" (my highlight as well BTW): Steve Howe joined Yes with The Yes Album, but previously he played in a band called Bodast. Check out their song "Nether Street" !
Thanks so much for your comment! I'm glad you enjoyed the review and felt it was accurate to what you heard as well. Very interesting g history also. I'll see if I can hear that track somewhere. Thanks so much for watching..
I just got a copy of this. I've never heard it in its entirety (I can feel the bottles now aimed at my head). I'm really looking forward to hearing it.
You got the best copy in existence in my opinion, Jeff. I hope you love it as I did
Can't wait to get this. I have the excellent Friday Music double 45rpm release. I'm sure this will absolutely smash it though.
I would have loved to find out. I'm trying to get one to borrow to satisfy my curiosity!
Please let us know what you think!
Atlantic tended to keep their master tapes in Los Angeles. That's the case with the Led Zeps anyway. I love the red/plum UK Led Zep II. It doesn't have the inner detail of the US RL original, but it's great on its own.
Yes, when I looked at the label, it says under license from Atlantic USA. So maybe the recording was done here. I haven't researched that. It might explain why this is claimed to be from the original analog master tape rather than a tape copy, and might be why the Plum DOES sound like it was from a copy tape.
Hey Scott, thanks for your review, just ordered this album yesterday, can’t wait to receive it after listening to your stellar review, always thought there was more that could be pulled out of this recording, so much going on. Love your honest and insightful reviews, stay well.
Great. You will not believe it! You have to come back and let us know, please!
I'll be adding files for the US, UK, and AP later today, for I've Seen All Good People! Done on my rig!
Great job! I love the way this album sounded in your system! STELLAR ! ! !
It was magical! Hope we can it in one of your videos, Oz. Oh that reminds me to put the files in the description!
Scott, your video made me aware that I did not have the All Or Nothing (45 rpm) which I thought I already had. Thank you for that! It has now gone on my wishlist cause I believe it is a must in any Vocal Jazz collection.
It is a must have title. Do put in a Notify Me request on Acoustic Sounds. It may have a small repress. Until then we can hope to see it in the AS series!
Sorry, late to the party, just got out of the hospital. Scott, thank you for an honest review. I love Kevin Gray too, but just because it says “Kevin Gray,”that doesn’t mean you should automatically love it. We can always trust your opinion.🙏🏻🎧
I have a near mint mono first pressing of the debut. It's an Allentown pressing. I have the DCC Gold CD, a VG+ mono New Zealand first pressing, with the flip back cover, and 'The End' fades out about 15 seconds too early, and the MoFi.LP. I also have the DCC Strange Days gold CD. It has a lot more bass than a first pressing LP that I have. And I have the digital mono 'Days' vinyl remaster. 'Days' is a fold over, I don't care who says what. The title track and Lost Little Girl are discrete mono mixes though.
Thank you for all the interesting info on your various pressings and CDs. There are wide variations in how this can sound, but it sounds like you might be all set on this title.
Hey Scott Great vid. Just wanted to pick your brain. A run of Erato recordings have just hit my local store. They are in a gatefold type sleeve. I bought one at $10 and it sounds really good to me. (Vivaldi, Les Concertos pour Mandolines). They look in great condition. Do you think they are worth picking up? Cheers Mate.
I would say so, if the music looks interesting and they are in excellent condition. I don't have many but those I do are truly excellent sounding records.
@@ThePressingMatters Thanks so much. I'll have another look at them. Actually, I've just pulled up to the store.😂😂🙏
Anything to report? I checked and I have some nice organ recordings on Erato
One of my favorite all time albums. The background on the cover, as well as the gatefold photo of Joni skating, was shot by Joel Bernstein on Lake Mandota in Madison Wisconsin, my alma mater which makes the album even more special.
One of the most beautiful and striking jacket designs from anyone. Obviously one of my all time favorites too!
Thank you for this honest and detailed review. I was going to purchase a new receiver with bluetooth. I started seeing ads for this unit. Due to your review I just purchased a unit from Amazon. Thank you!
Fantastic! I'm sure you'll love it. I've had no issues at all and am constantly surprised at how good it really is. Please let me know what you think once you've settled in with it.
Scott, thank you for sharing your views on great music. I’ve taken your advice on many selections and purchased albums you’ve recommended. I’d like to ask you for your opinion on classical albums. Could you recommend a few classical albums that feature the violin? This would be much appreciated Scott. Keep up the great content!
You're welcome. I hope you have found my recommendations to be things you love too. I'd like to give some thought to your question on classical with violin. My first thought was one of the great Heifetz records on RCA Living Stereo, but let me think about it. I definitely take the inquiry seriously and want to steer you right.
That was a well recorded album when it was released over 50 years ago....
Absolutely. I'm sure it's always sounded excellent.
Hi is maiden lew
Hi!
Awesome review Scott I really dig you breakdown on this Billie Holiday I’m definitely going to go after the Ryan K Smith cut I dig his mastering I was lucky to have grab his Ella Fitzgerald Complete Cole Porter Songbook 3 lp on Analog Spark some years ago for $50 I still play it today .
Thanks! I think you will love this. I would have loved to get that Cole Porter set. Must be wonderful. I hope this series continues and that we see the Ella Songbooks in it.
In my humble opinion, this might be the best release to-date. I have the original, so I can A/B both.
Thank you Scott for another thoughtful review. I am just curious if you have any sibilance on your MoFi or Atlantic 75th on "Traction in the Rain". I have three original Broadway Atlantic's and all have a sibilance on David's vocals.
Hi Bill, Thanks for your question. I will play it again and take a listen for that. I hadn't noticed anything obvious during this listening session but I may have missed it. Will report back.
Well done, Scott. I love my MoFi version a lot and can only recommend it, although is has gotten pricey. Definitely of my top Ricker remasterings.
Hi Thomas! Great to hear from you. While these are all very good, you may have the best of all. The Stan Ricker cut has the vocals tucked a bit more into the soundstage. That's a plus, because on the later two they are more forward and seem to have some emphasis. It's probably a personal choice, but I was delighted to hear this with fresh ears on a better system.
did u ever do the full review after u got 100 hours on it?
Hi, No I haven't yet, but I'm about to start working on it. It's got much more time on it now, and I'm about to hear it on a new turntable as well, so it should be very interesting to do the follow up. Stay tuned!
@@ThePressingMatters interesting to do a second review a year later. im intrigued. lets hear it.
That thumbnail is hilarious.
Yes, looking back on it, I agree! I thought it was clever at the time.
"Black Sabbath with the lights on", is why I follow you because you are honest about these remasters. You come at it as a music fan first, you put "feel" first and analytical second. I think its great that you are going against the grain on this one. I don't have a horse in this race and I was still engaged. Thanks, Scott!
Thank you for watching this one! I just couldn't get behind this one (and most of this series) despite the massive hype. I try to be diplomatic but always strive to be honest. Great to have your feedback, thanks again!
Very interesting to hear you re-appraise your MoFi (which I've never seen out in the wild). Those Anadisk-era pressings are frequently excellent (eg Fantasy Film World of Bernard Herrmann). I must get this new Billie Holiday (but will keep an eye out for the MoFi). I don't always comment, but watch your videos religiously - you do a terrific job, Scott - and I love the eclectic mix of titles you review.
Hi! So great to hear from you! Yes this era of MFSL often gets overlooked. This reappraisal happened also with GetzGilberto. If you watch my Impex review, you'll note how surprised I was with the sound of the Anadisc. Same here. There are definitely some gems from this period. Fantasy Film World is another. I may do a segment on the Anadiscs. I think it would be VERY interesting! Thanks for your kind words about the channel. Good to know and get feedback.
“Audiophiles” take the joy out of music…
Scott Scott Scott your sensitivity and sensibility shine thru in these reviews , well done again and thank you !
Thank you Andrew!
I was wondering if you had by chance read "The Master Handbook of Acoustics"? When setting up my system as with any sound reproduction components, I find that ones understanding of the rooms actual sound dynamics has to be studied so as to add gain to the deficiencies and defeat to the modal resonances. I found the chapter explaining the human ear to brain connection and the fact that evolution has geared our brains to hear frequencies that fall within the human voice range to be easier to pick out (louder). That said, an EQ is a must and Dynamic Range enhancement is a tool that used properly, can decompress most compression that comes standard with all formats. Lastly, speaker efficiency, is by far the greatest game changer of any system and can deliver the full body and nuances of the reproduction after all....... what I never heard from you or the commenters, is which if any sounded like you were in the studio at the mixing board and the sng sounded clean, crisp, subtle, attack, and live. Happy listening.......Ronnie
Hi Ronnie, Thank you for your informative and thought provoking comment. I have not read this book but I am very keen to do so. I want to start to address the room beyond the basic parameters and I think this book would be very enlightening. Thanks for referring to it for myself and others reading this. Your comments about missing detailed commentary are noted. It can be a challenge to get out everything you might be able to speak about in a one take video of reasonable length. I will try and expand on these things if I can in future videos. Thanks so much for watching!
I bought a Hana ML on Cancuck audio Mart. The cantilever was push into the body. Andy Kim retipped it for $450 with A Boron Cantilever and a Micro Ridge nude stylus.
How is it sounding? Is it your first Hana?
Hi Scott, Great video! Wonderful job I just order a copy. Can’t wait Bravo 🎉
Oh! Please make a video opening it in your car like you used to! I love those!
Hey Scott! Another great video. I have the AP 45 and just bought the Acoustic Sounds version. The 45 to me sounds slightly better but not by much. The new acoustic sounds has a beautiful jacket far better then the 45 version. You’re lucky to have the Anadisc version. I’d like to hear it someday. The only Anadisc record I have is John Hiatt Bring The Family. I also have the AP 45 and Acoustic Sounds versions of Songs For Distingue Lovers. I wonder in time if we will have an Acoustic Sounds version of All Or Nothing At All? I guess time will tell.
Hi Joe! Thanks for your comment! Good to hear from someone else that has both the 45 and 33. I agree they are quite close with the 45 edging it out ever so slightly. Very similar tonality. Great jacket made this an instant buy for me. If you've ever felt the vocals to be slightly pronounced as I described, I hope one day you can hear the MFSL. It's smoother in that regard. All of them offer something. I really hope they do All Or Nothing At All. Can you imagine that jacket!
@@ThePressingMatters Oh if Acoustic Sounds does a version of All Or Nothing At All, I will pre order it! No hesitation on that title!
@@JoeBelluomini Do you have the 45 of that one too? It's incredible.
@@ThePressingMatters Yes! I bought it a few months back and love it! I also have the AP Lady in Satin 45. I actually have purchased many acoustic sounds titles from viewing your videos and reading the comments.
@@JoeBelluomini That's so cool, Im so glad you find my reviews helpful. You're definitely choosing wisely - these records have stood the test of time and these pressings will always be among the finest ever made.
The whole series is amazing. I ordered this and the "Back to Back" (Johnny Hodges)
Yes, it's my favorite jazz series happening right now - I too bought Back To Back but haven't reviewed it as of yet. Glad to hear from another fan. It's wonderful.
Wow. What happened to the new intro. I thought it was great. I hope you didn’t spend a lot of time and money making it. I was going to give a super thanks because of the new intro. But now that you’ve gone back to the old intro. Booo 👎 I won’t. Maybe you’ll keep the next one
Very informative and helpful review, thank you. Looks like the new AS will be my go-to 33 since I always felt the Speakers Corner sounded dull. In addition to the three Billie records you mention, I wish AP had also tackled Recital...love her version of "Stormy Weather" on this.
Thank you. From your description of the Speaker's Corner, you're certain to love the AP. Clear and vibrant sound. I've never heard Recital...is it originally on Verve?
Yep, initially Clef which was absorbed by Verve.
@@timzigs3972 That's right, I always forget to mention that. I'm so glad they use the original (i think) Clef Verve label.
Good Video, I like your presentations. Are your three Versions in Mono? I suppose. If I this true: You dont listen your Monos with a pure Mono-Cartridge. What a pitty. If you would use an AudioTechnica AT 33 Mono or an Ortofon GMU Mono or a Miyajima Zero Mono you would be astonished about the big step in Soundquality, a lot more energy and aura. I own a lot of Holidays albums, included Body and Soul, Song for d... Lovers, All or nothing at all, every album in Mono. But my LP-Versions are cheaper, from WaxTime. I suppose, they dont sound so good as your expensive Versions. Or are they as good as yours, cause I listen with my three Mono-Cartridges? Turntables are Denon DE 3000 NE, Technics 1210 GR with Phono pres from Nagra an GoldNote.
Thank you for your comment! I'm glad you liked the video. I am working on a dedicated mono set up but until then, a mono switch. I know it's a whole other world. I've heard it in my system before. These three are mono records. I don't think I e ever seen a fake stereo version of this and to my knowledge no stereo tape exists. No matter, it's glorious in mono!
@@ThePressingMatters Thanks. Which Mono-Cartridge is yours?
@@dirkbusche54 I don't currently have a mono cartridge or dedicated set up. I must use the mono switch on my phono preamp.
Nice review of a very unique singer....super emotional vocalist and of course I am always listening to the backup music!! Nice job Scott
Thanks Ray!
Another Sade fan Nice review Scott, appreciate your passion Enjoyed all her albums and the 3 tour videos - I saw the 2011 Bring me Home tour twice and the Hallelujah vocal in Pearls sent chills , everything was so captivating Her band particularly Stewart Mathewson(sp?) on haunting sax oboe guitar and keys really sets the mood I followed her right out of the gate in 1984 - so have all the original albums, the later releases I only regret not getting all of the Audio Fidelity reissues Waiting for them to release that new lp to fill the extra space in the box Sade has one of the most lucrative recording contracts - full artistic license - timing of releases - the band get $1 per each album sold A Sade record emerges when they have something to say There is always an audience
Thank you for your memories of seeing her and for the very interesting information. I had no idea about the contractual things. I also missed the Audio Fidelity releases (what was I thinking!) I am really looking forward to the next release!
@@ThePressingMatters - I bought half of the Audio Fidelity (doh!)
@@audiotomb I bet they are wonderful
As always Scott your love of Billie shines through these reviews. Great job.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I appreciate your comments so much.
Look for the Decca Bille Holiday double CD and great booklet (D217027). Her voice is stunning.
This I do have, but I haven't had a disc player in a while. I kept that CD set in the long cloth bound case because I knew I would come back to it at some point. Thanks for reminding me!
Thanks Scott Sabbath is truly a band that needs that thick sound I passed on the debut - the dark overtones, occult figured and inverted crosses don’t play well with my Christian beliefs. That said - Paranoid - which doesn’t have those elements is a driving album with great jazz like changes The UK vertigo first press is explosive People are going to want to hear about early definitive pressing but the captured the essence of how Sabbath should sound Not hi-fi ish but with energy I too have found the Rhino hifi releases not to the level of their hype
I completely understand the first Sabbath album contrasting with your Christian beliefs. I have a friend who has told me he's not interested in it for that reason as well. I think you hit on what I was trying to get at here. Not that the Castle pressing is some sort of undiscovered gem, but that it conveys the Black Sabbath vibe better than I felt the Rhino did. Indeed, to me it follows what I've been reporting in the last three rock releases. A mastering style that seems so unlike what we expect from Kevin Gray. Bright overly detailed top end and obvious lack of much bass foundation. To me it's really obvious that it's a choice for this series. Captain and Me, Candy O and American Beauty all share the same traits. I just feel Sabbath, of all bands should have a darker more reigned in top end and more power in the bass. I think more and more people are seeing this with the Rhinos as the hype starts to die down.
I concur with your assessment. I bought this one blind after being blown away by the AP Lady in Satin and this one was just a joy to listen to. Her smoky voice is lovely and this presentation is just stunning.
So great to hear from you on this. I'm glad you love it. For this evaluation I was using the Audio Technica cartridge, the AT33EV which is more forgiving and a bit rolled off on top. My Hana is installed on a VPI I'm testing. It's good to hear a positive report on how the voice is coming across. It's truly a new golden age for classic Jazz collectors!
@@ThePressingMatters I have a very basic setup (Fluance RT82 TT with an upgraded AT-vm540ml cart) but when a record is reissued with such care, even a rather pedestrian system like my own really shines.
Excellent review, Scott. Really like your original intro. Three great recordings to choose from. Thanks.
Thank you, Anthony. I felt strongly about the original intro too. It was nice to see it again! It is great to have three wonderful mastering engineers tackle this album.
Hey Scott, How does this pressing handle the distortion in the vocals on the first two tracks? When I bought the MOFI, I think the consensus was that it was baked into the tapes. But if this has less high end attenuation, hopefully there is less distortion.
It's always going to be there to some extent on Music is Love. For the second track, I'm not sure I know what you hear - I'll have to doublecheck for any distortion on Cowboy Movie. I don't recall any of much significance. I felt this pressing handled it better than any other I've heard, but Music is Love will always sound that way.
@@ThePressingMattersthanks for thoughts. I listened to it yesterday and heard some distortion on Cowboy Movie’s vocals, but I think my stylus is nearing the end of its life and will be replacing it ASAP. So that could be the culprit
@@syr1964 it very well could be. That's exactly the kind of thing you notice first. I'll check it out and reply when I have a free moment to revisit it.
