Sonny Rollins Way Out West - Contemporary Acoustic Sounds Vinyl Review
Sonny Rollins Way Out West - Contemporary Acoustic Sounds Series Vinyl Review.
Sonny Rollins Way Out West was recorded in 1957 for Contemporary Records by Roy DuNann. It features Sonny Rollins on tenor saxophone, Ray Brown on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums. This was the first time these artists worked together, and the result is a five star jazz masterpiece.
This new reissue of Sonny Rollins Way Out West is part on the ongoing Contemporary Acoustic Sounds Series, overseen by Chad Kassem. The reissue is an all analog cut by Bernie Grundman, and is pressed on 180gm vinyl by Quality Record Pressings. The jacket is a heavy duty, single sleeve tip-on jacket that replicates the original release.

The Columbia recording of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 “Pastoral” by Bruno Walter conducting the Columbia Symphony Orchestra has always been a top choice for interpretation and performance. The Stooges' Classic 1969 Debut Album On Rhino High Fidelity Vinyl!
มุมมอง 3.3K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
An interesting entry into the Rhino High Fidelity Vinyl Series is The Stooges self titled debut album, originally released on Elektra Records in 1969. I thought it was a curious release for an "audiophile" series, as it's anything but an audiophile quality recording. Still, its an important album that deserves the best possible reissue, and Rhino has certainly upped the game. Join me for some p...

Today I have a video on a short lived series of records from the early 1960's called United Artists Ultra Audio. It's not as good as SR's Saxophone Colossus album, but it's an excellent album regardless. 👍👍👍 I look forward to hearing what you have to say about this pressing. 🤔
As you like Genesis, can I recommend “The Prince of Heaven’s eyes” by Fruupp, it was a life changer for me, I’m only mentioning this because we share a lot of tastes esp fifties lounge & exotica, keep them coming Scott 👍
This will be my third copy! The first was from three years ago when I bought my first vinyl record after I sold my collection nearly 25 years ago!. I was planning to dabble and this was in pretty poor shape from an antiques store. Two years later, I found another, much nicer copy, still original UK pressing and was very happy. Then AP announced this series and I have just ordered it, having bought all of the other three Atlantic 75 Genesis releases and loved them! I can’t wait. I have tried Mo-Fi twice now. The first was Earl Klugh, Finger Paintings. Dull as dishwater. The second was Alison Krauss and Union Station. Okay but slightly edgy treble on sides 1, 2 and 4. Side three was a horrible distorted mess. I’m afraid I just don’t get it. Clearly your experience is different, but for me I stick with Chad’s releases. Every one I have is a masterpiece. Thanks for the review.
Hi Scott, I also purchased the Michelangeli Ravel Concerto on The Lost Recordings lp. I found the same problem with side 2 of the pressing, When I contacted them, they sent me a second copy which had the same problem. I suspect there is a problem with the master which is a shame because the performance is spectacular. Michelangeli made so few recordings that every one is an event. I should mention that customer service from The Last Recordings was exemplary.
Hi Paul, What a great performance it is! That was sent to me for review, so I didn't peruse a replacement, but I suspected a problem with the stamper. Thanks for confirming. I do have the Sweetvinyl Sugarcube which removes tics and pops on the fly. Hearing it flawless was a treat. I think this is best heard on a digital format unfortunately.
Great picks! Imo, these Lost Recordings issues are fabulous. I have the other Ella Fitzgerald and the Sarah Vaughan concert releases. Fabulous! Merry Christmas!
Hi Thomas! They do a very good job with restoring these unreleased recordings. Wishing you the best! merry Christmas to you!
Thanks for this excellent review! I'd like this album on vinyl and will get the Atlantic 75.
Thanks Vince! I hope you get a moment to check out the written review also. I was able to expand on the history and song by song analysis there. The release is getting raves everywhere, so I feel confident that you'll love it too.
Thanks for dor this review! I have have the 2008 MFSL CD and am smitten with it. But you make a good point about a lively, concert-like presentation suiting the album.
Thanks!
Thank you for supporting The Pressing Matters!
I love your videos because they respect my time. They are clear and concise with a sprinkle of interesting background info. Even if I don't buy the records mentioned, I come away with a great appreciation of the artists and music. I didn't know about your Amazon storefront and have bookmarked it for future purchases. Your videos are my new "fireside chats" that bring me joy and comfort in these crazy times.
Thank you so much, this comment made my day. Its exactly like I hoped I come across. Thank you too for your support. It makes a difference!
I have a few of the Lost Recordings albums. They are generally pretty good. The one that stood out here is your Sonny Stitt. One of my all time favorites. My best copy is a superb Speakers Corner issue. So, I decided to pass on the one you have. I have an original pressing as well. And my Evans One-Step is still sealed! I have so many new albums that I'm kind of putting that one off because I don't want to open it, but I do. Oh, brother.
Open the One Step! It is superb!. I will have my review up next week
@@ThePressingMattersI'll wait til you convince me to next week. 😂
So here we are 50 years later still discussing Lamb, amazing! I bought the UK LP the first week of release & was disappointed to hear 50Hz AC hum throughout. Lamb did not get played much until the first Atlantic US CD release in the 80s where the hum is eliminated. I wonder what equipment was used to eliminate the hum?
Hi! I guess we’ll be discussing it again this coming year. Deluxe multi format super deluxe coming! I think I'm good on. This one though. I'm not sure how they performed that magic, removing the hum. I've never heard a copy with it to my knowledge. Did the first US pressing have that?
I am loving this pressing. I agree with your assessment.
Wonderful! Thanks for letting us know. I have not heard one disappointment for this one on the channel. I did see one Discovs review that preferred something else, but that was an outlier. Seems to be a great success!
I think Verve Acoustic Sounds Series is doing John Lee Hookers Serve You Right To Suffer in the new year. I was close to buying the AP 45 a couple years ago but held off but glad it's finally getting a really good 33rpm mastering
Yes I saw that too! I'll definitely give that a try!
Thank you for your time & trouble
My pleasure!
Thanks Scott, for these reviews, I was thinking of getting the Ravel as I love that piece , but less than 30 minutes of music is not worth it imho. Interestingly you can find the performance in you tube, some of the others are quite cheap, but your store doesn’t seem to work in Oz Amazon unfortunately.
Yes the store could be international but there's too many tax issues that I didn't care to deal with. So unfortunately it's US only.
The Ravel was taken from a video performance. I'd love to see it. I don't think the record is worth the cost either. Its just not a great value at $60?
@ here u go th-cam.com/video/5YGxbA0WJ0k/w-d-xo.htmlsi=j7KqP5s7qNfoAO35 , not bad video for 1982 . I like the AMB biopic at the start lol very bbc Celibidache claps his playing at the end !
Oh, great, thanks!
If you like your rock in the heavy psych variety check out Magick Potion
I do, and I will check out your suggestion. I have never heard of the band.
Yo Mr Wilson. I concur on every front. And If your pal John concurs then you know your in good shape‼️ Nicely done vid as per usual. JD
Thank you John!
i think the Bill Evans Moonbeams is a digital reissue if it was rereleased in the ninetees on OJC. 😮
Probably so. Still a nice sounding record. Looking forward to a nice all analog reissue.
you do'nt like Nico?!😮
Nico?
@ part of Andy Warhols crowd.
Yes, I thought that what you meant. Yeah, a Nico album would be cool!
All the Bluesville releases are stellar, but I am so taken with the new Rev. Gary Davis, finally a great recording where I can finally hear this most influential of acoustic blues artists. Thanks for the Johnny Hodges shout out, I have the Classics version, I can listen to anything he’s done anytime, got the Moasic sets, his RCA OGs, his Verve OGs. Everything but his album with Lawrence Welk! But promise to pick it up next time I see it. Just got the Stitt, the Vaughn (got to see her at Blues Alley 40 years ago), would love to get the Callas (I have all her operas on EMI OGs). Oh, well.
Thank you for your recommendation! I'll check it out. Just getting started on that genre. I'll have more coming up soon!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on John Lee Hooker's Burning Hell. Glad you enjoyed!
It was fantastic. Was it Matt Luthans who mastered it? Love his work. Great classic stuff, wonderful jacket. Looking forward to try another.
Great video! I’m impressed to know that you put your videos together in your two days off. I think I have a sense of how much time, careful thought and planning goes into them, plus editing. I’m one of very many subscribers who are grateful for all your hard work. I hope you get some pure downtime, too. Except for the John Lee Hooker, Evans’ Moon Beams, and the Michelangeli, I have all the records you mentioned here, though some are different pressings. For example, I have Blues-A-Plenty as a 2x45 AP/QRP pressing, which is great, though my friends who own the Verve Acoustic Sounds series version say it sounds amazing and approaches the 2x45 version in SQ, for a lot less money. Oh, about Bookends. I’m happy to know there’s a standard-price version that sounds fantastic. But your earlier video review convinced me it’s worth having the Mofi 2x45. I put it in my cart after watching that video of yours, and just haven’t checked out yet. I’ll get it as a Christmas present to myself. Thanks again for the great work you for this 11,800 strong community you’ve built these past few years in this little corner of the TH-cam-verse. Best, Ron C from Kenosha
Hi Ron, I wanted to thank you for you support of my channel! I really appreciate it! Quickly, the MOFI Bookends is a Supervinyl 33, not a 45. I'm at work now so I'll respond to the rest of your comment later tonight! Take care and thank you!
Hi Ron, You likely are all set with Blues a Plenty, if my other Verve 45s are anything to go by. I think yours was cut by George Marino. Its still pretty attractive to get the much better jacket, a 33rpm for musical flow, and of course Bernies take on it. I've never had the opportunity to compare them. If I had to guess, the Marino might be a touch more forward than Bernie’s. Maybe your friends can describe what they heard. I'd love to know! If we don't talk again before the holidays, I wish you the very best. Scott
@@ThePressingMatters Thanks, same to you too, Scott!
Great review. And I like the original-looking finish on the sleeve. For years, I used to have a huge multi-piece card TOTT window display that a local record shop gave me after it was due for replacement. I wish I still had it!
Thanks for watching and commenting! That display must have been reasl cool. I worked at a record store around that time and remember people asking for the displays!
@@ThePressingMatters Another snippet: In the weeks running up to the album's release, the main record store in my hometown (Newcastle) had the promo videos for 'Robbery, Assault, and Battery' and 'Ripples' playing on a loop. Every lunch break from work had me racing up to the shop and staring intently at the screen for an hour. I must have gone every day for about three weeks. In July '76 I saw them perform at Glasgow Apollo, and some footage from that gig made it into the 'Genesis In Concert' film. I was equally obsessed when 'Wind and Wuthering' came around later that year. Happy days.
Great memories, thank you!
Thanks Scott, lots of great vinyl! Good to know about your storefront, just bookmarked it. Bought the Mofi Bookends on your recommendation and greatly enjoying it, much better than my Sundazed version. Hope you get some holiday time off!
Fantastic! The MOFI is awesome. The one I showed today is good if one doesn't want to splurge on the MOFI.
So many records, too little time (and money!). At least I can live vicariously through your video. Several of these are on my list. How is the sound on the Ella?
I know! It's getting crazy. I'm trying to be more selective, and I've had some success. The sound on the Ella is good. It's not quite audiophile quality. You get a good sense of the size of the venue, audience is slightly back, so not distracting. The voice is clear but a touch distant. It's one you'd want for the performance over the sound, though it's very good.
@@ThePressingMatters Kinda what I expected to hear... but sure is tempting.(I'm a HUGE Ella fan). My priority right now is to pick up as many of Chad's classical titles as possible before they go OOP. Fortunately I like the Classic versions of all but the earliest Living Stereo blockbusters - but still it's a lot of records!!!
I noticed the Rubinstein Rachmaninoff Concerto is now gone. Not sure if you said you were going to grab it. I wish we could know which ones are running low.
@@ThePressingMatters It was on my list, alas. Do we know if he's keeping any of the hardcore favorites in print?
I think so. That is the impression I got when talking to him. Maybe the best strategy is to pick from the more obscure titles first. Or just go with your next must-have.
You just brought forward every true, diverse audiophile's ultimate dilemma. There are too many great records and not enough time to hear them all and own them all. Most of what you covered in this video are top tier artists. It must have been painful to not be able to cover them this year. It is time to get your blues mojo on, Scott! 💪👊 Johnny Lee is a great start, but there are so many truly great blues artists. 😻 I often recommend that people start with the electric blues artists first and then work their way back to the folk acoustic blues artists. Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Elmore James, T-Bone Walker, and "The Three Kings" (BB King, Albert King, & Freddie King) would be a really good start for electric blues. 😻 Some of these artists also played acoustic blues too. If you like acoustic blues and roots music, start with Robert Johnson, Blind Willie Johnson, Mississippi John Hurt, Skip James, Lonnie Johnson, and Son House. One of my very favorite, if not favorite, blues artists is Lightnin' Hopkins. With the look and the extraordinary talent, he was the epitome of cool among blues artists. He played both acoustic and electric blues.😻 I really hope that you get your mojo on by covering a few blues albums in 2025. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Thank you for all the wonderful blues suggestions. I picked up a couple of from the Prestige series. I actually like the acoustic stuff so far. I'll get some more and do a video on it from my beginner’s perspective. Yeah it hurt not to be able to do Sonny Stitt and Johnny Hodges, especially as I have really beautiful thumbnails done for those. Perhaps I'll revisit for full reviews!
@@ThePressingMatters When it comes to blues vinyl records, it's really pretty tough. I was just talking to a used vinyl record seller I call Jazzy Jeff. He doesn't see blues records very often. Finding OG copies of great classic blues records in NM condition is very difficult. If you find them in that condition, get ready to pay some really big bucks. We're very fortunate to have people like Chad Kassam who are reissuing blues records to get over these hurdles. You're about to discover some truly great music. Though not as musically complex as jazz, it is full of emotion and can be so soulful. 🤔
@@ThePressingMatters This is a cover of the Skip James Great Depression era classic Hard Time Killing Floor Blues performed by Larkin Poe: th-cam.com/video/nsAUvYn97eo/w-d-xo.html. I actually like this version better than the Skip James original. The lap steel guitar slide on this version is absolutely heavenly blues. 😻 I saw them perform it live in concert at the MJF in Monterey years ago. 😻😻😻😻😻
I'll check it out! Thanks!

Scott, I haven’t purchased a vinyl disc since 1986 (I get by on CDs and You Tube), but you’re inspiring me! The tone arm for my turntable is dysfunctional, but hey, the record jackets alone are worth the price on many of these. Great to display! By the way, I love the lead-in music to your videos.
Thanks for your comments! Its a bit of a financial investment to go back into vinyl, but I find it a rewarding pursuit. Maybe collect you favorites why there in print for your future vinyl set up. I'll be covering more equipment soon. Used is the best bang for the buck! Yes the jackets are frame worthy! Such a luxurious look and feel!
I'm glad you mentioned the lead in music. At one point, I thought I wanted a fresh lead in video but it just wasn't the same. The original music works really well.
Enjoy your channel very much. I have several Living Stereo records and CDs, both classical and of the wild variety. My question is, have your ever talked about early (1958-60) Everest albums? The ones pressed when Belock started and owned the company (a division of Belock Instrument Corporation). A very interesting guy. I have a couple albums, and the sound is unbelievable. Mr. Fine (Living Presence) actually bought his recording equipment.
I'm a big fan of Everest, but just haven't gotten to it yet. I have no blue/silver originals though. But I can still use my later pressings and audiophile reissues and come up with a great video.
Your 1st John Lee Hooker LP? You are indeed just getting started with the Blues. You should put it on your 2025 New Years Resolution to listen, review and learn more about our great American Blues Traditions. Good Lord what the Blues has contributed to everything we listen to today and the RICH RICH Blues History and Culture in our country. It's obvious to me that the Blues in the TH-cam Vinyl Review Community seems not only to be ignored but to a certain extent looked down on. But this has always been the case by the Jazz snobs. We had some great reissues this year from Lightnin Hopkins (The Greatest Bluesman Ever,) Albert King, Skip James and Jimmy Reed just to name a few.
I am totally with you brother! Never has any music spoken to me and moved me more than the blues for the reasons you mentioned and for other more personal reasons. It is what I strive to play on guitar more than anything else. As Eddie Van Halen once said, "Everything begins with the blues anyways." Thank you for your comment, and I hope that the blues continues to be a joy to you. 👍👍👍

Yes, I'm very excited to have something like this to explore! Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll be picking up more from this and the Prestige series.
Loving your positivity Scott!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the video!
The Sonny Stitt album came as a complete surprise to me. Totally blown away by it musically and sonically. Thank you for all that you do Scott! Looking forward to your reviews in 2025.
Yes it’ a great one and my two top picks from this batch are it and the Johnny Hodges. I love the sound that Verve captures at this time. Sounding better than ever on these beautiful reissues. Now onward to 2025!
I just ordered the Johnny Hodges and Bill Evans through your Amazon links. Thanks for the tips.
That's awesome! Thank you! Wait til see the jacket of the Hodges record. So beautiful as is the sound that Bernie drew out of the tape. I think you'll love Moonbeans too. Classic Bill Evsns, surprisingly good!
@@ThePressingMatters Just Saturday I got Bill Evans "Sunday At The Village Vanguard" and four Donald Byrd albums I haven't listened to yet. I had to check my Discogs because I thought I had that Johnny Hodges but then I remembered I had it in my wishlist but every time I went to order it was sold out. You can't dilly dally on these things, lol. I got another Rafael Puyana harpsichord album from Acoustic Sounds. It was from one of their used collections but cost $45. It's "Baroque Masterpieces For The Harpsichord" Mercury Living Presence #SR90411. That man could make the harpsichord sound like nothing I ever heard, and I hope I can find more originals.
There are some gems in that late Mercury catalog! That is one of them. Sunday at the VV is a classic. Did you get the last Craft OJC? Someone just gave me a copy of a vintage German press of it. I have to clean it up and play it!
@@ThePressingMatters Yes, I got the Craft Recording and I'm going to give it a spin this evening. Life is good, lol.
It certainly is! I love whats happening with the reissue market these days.
Some very good titles there , I have my eye on the John lee hooker title and the Simon and Garfunkel sounds interesting at the price 👍😁
The John Lee Hooker is very nice for the price too. Bookends was a great surprise too!
Yep, the over wins the day! Still, not as bad as the hurt felt after the RCA Living Stereo video. The rewards have been amazing. I’ll check out the storefront
Thanks! The Living Stereo topic is coming back soon with two more titles to review, and an interesting update. Thanks for checking out the storefront.
So far La Mer and the Brahms Heifetz violin concerto have been favorites, but they’re all fantastic. I’ll be watching
I need both!
The Heifetz really slaps!
I bought the Sibelius Concerto for my next episode. I do have the Classic and original for the Brahms.
I was at the Festival Hall last month to see a Max Richter rendition of his “The Blue Diaries “ and Tilda Swindon was actually there to reprise her spoken word contribution. Mesmerising afternoon.
That sounds wonderful!
Good morning.
Good Morning! Thanks for coming by!
Ok… I wonder how much money this video will inspire me to spend. I’ll set the over-under at $142.50. lol.
Focus on the Sonny Stitt! Its well worth it!
Good late afternoon from Oxfordshire
Good Evening! Thanks. For checking out this video!
Lucky, I pre-ordered this in the summer and it's been delayed according to the website
I'm looking at the website now and its definitely in stock. Wouldn't be a bad idea to give them a call tomorrow. Sometimes a phone call can get things moving in the warehouse.
@ThePressingMatters morning, I'm in England so I ordered it from suppliers here but the release date was early December so god only knows what's going on.
It will be worth the wait. Please keep me up to date and please return with your thoughts on it.
@@ThePressingMatters yes mate definitely, I skipped selling England and got the clear LP Atlantic 75 version which I'm okay with because I already have a 1st press in ex con, I passed on the lamb for cost reasons which I'm fine with too because I get to save up for the big box set edition next year, so getting 'trick' is just perfect for me to have at least one of these 45rpm editions. Merry Christmas 🎄
One you should consider is Selling England By The Pound. I did a review on it and had a lot to compare it to. I think its the most successful AP. I think its awaiting repress. th-cam.com/video/th5e--6KGe0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Iv7ii7xl0mDFg3Vz
I love this new pressing. To me, the MFSL is too restrained and lacking in detail. It does have huge bass though. I like the UK first press a bit better than the MFSL.
Great to hear from you! I'm glad you are loving the new pressing! It is amazing. The MFSL does have that huge bass, which I do love. They didn't restrain that part! Would you say the new one is similar in sound to the UK?
@ I think the OG UK has a bit more detail than the MFSL but not as much as the AP. And the AP is quieter for sure. The thing that bugs me a bit with the MFSL is the vocals sound a bit lost in the mix to me-granted it does sound like that on all pressings, but more so on the MFSL (I think the vocals were recorded or mixed a bit weird, on some tracks the volume seems a little low and drenched in reverb). Of the three, the AP is the best pressing hands down in my opinion. Los Endos really shines, like you said. It really hit me in the feels haha And congrats on publishing a written review on this one, I’ll check it out next. I think you were spot on in describing the differences between the MFSL and AP. I have a slightly warmer system, I might favor the MFSL a bit more on a brighter system I’m guessing!
Thanks! I hope you like the written review. I'm going to be testing and reviewing some higger end cartridges shortly. I'm hoping for a slightly warmer sound through my system. The Hana ML is very good for the price, but a little more refinement would be great. I'm also going to rewire the system with much better cables very soon.
The vocals are the most striking improvement with the AP. First thing I noticed is that the vocals were revealed more clearly and with more presence. The difference makes the vocals on the MFSL seem lost in the mix. Its amazing they could do that without a remix!
Scott, I'm sure by now you've read about the big Rhino rollout of Genesis releases including a Lamb box remastered at Abbey Road. The release date is March 2025. I realize The Lamb was not your favorite Genesis album, but I hope you will still review it. It's going to be very hard to beat the Acoustic Sounds Atlantic 75 45rpm cut but still, as a lifelong fan, I feel obligated to buy it. I might go CD though. Any early thoughts on this? I'm not a fan of competing releases but I guess its better than none at all.
I am aware of it but haven't investigated thoroughly. Are they using the original mixes or the Nick Davis remixes? I'd be interested for sure, especially Wind and Wuthering, And Then Thrre Were Three and Duke if the use thr original mixes.
@@ThePressingMatters: Abbey Road's Miles Showell is remastering it using the original master tapes, which is promising. Along with that is a Blu-ray with an Atmos version that Peter and Tony oversaw at Real World Studios. I'm not an Atmos person but I guess some people are.
That does sound promising! I'll be keeping an eye on it now. Thanks for all the information!
Nursery Cryme is the first album where the tapping guitar-technique is used. This was Hackett's 'invention' but made famous by Eddie Van Halen. Hackett named the technique 'nailing' and you can hear it in 'The Musical Box' and 'The Return Of The Giant Hogweed'. Great review, enjoyed it, thank you! Great pressing!!
I didn't realize that, so thank you for the information. I'll now be listening for it.
This is the way all 2+ LP boxes should be 😎
Wonderful Creation
Great videos sir! I've watched several of your videos. You do an awesome job and I really appreciate you introducing me to new music to collect.
Thank so much! I really appreciate that you are checking out some of the older videos. Lots of good info in this one! I hope you found a title to spark your interest.
Mine has gloss cover
Lucky you! The latest ones are matte and kind of drab looking.
@ThePressingMatters I have same issue with those latest Mangus on Atlantic 75 where the first album in series is semi-gloss & the rest are matt!😕
I don't like matte unless there's a good reason. Textured matte like on Alexander Nevsky and Sibelius are very nice and appropriate.
@@ThePressingMatters Agreed, especially when it is drab. Guessing some problem at Stoughton, perhaps too many orders...
My mind immediately went to cost cutting, but your idea makes more sense.
Excellent review as always, have you explored the PI record flattener details I sent you ?
Yes, I did, thank you. Looks like something I will need to add to my arsenal. My record clamp deals with this well but it would be nice to get problem discs flat!

Thank you, @audiotomb! It does look pretty cool 😁
Hey Scott - as much as I had issues with the sound of 'Nursery Cryme' on double-45 (still don't like Peter's buried vocals on too much of it), I think this one is glorious and breathtaking. It's the best double-45 I've heard, along with 'Aja'. It sounds a lot better recorded than any of the PG-era ones, to me, anyway..
I've always considered a step up in sound as well. Glad you enjoyed it! Some stunning music on this one!
