I made this video to explain to young people , that many people come to my site everyday asking for a job , and i tell them what they need and how to get the proper certifications . But they never come back . .......
No one ever returns to the site to take the job.

Just completed my 40 hour SST training. I’ve worked doing construction off the books for the last two years. Trying to get on the books and a steady job now. Off the books wasn’t as steady. I appreciate your videos. I will start going around to the job sites here in NYC and ask for the foreman. Hopefully I get in somewhere. I’m 23 and want to learn a trade and do this kind of work forever. Hopefully I find a job. Appreciate your advice. Just for the record when this video came out a OSHA 10 was required l. Fast forward as of March 2021 it’s now 40 hours in total!!
Try Local 79 Laborers Union .
They have a office in NYC , and a school in LIC Queens . Ask them if they are hiring apprenticeship program . Good luck . Mike

@@akuaku3496 This was from 2019. When I was applying for entry level construction jobs, an OSHA 10 was required but in 2019 an OSHA 30 was required for entry level jobs.

Hi Mike, thanks for the video. What are good entry level jobs? My research online says flagging only pays $15 an hour. Anything that pays $25 or more at entry level? I’m thinking of getting my osha 30 card

If you want to go to Long Island Queens NY , 11101 . The address is 4253 21 street.
This is a training center for Laborers and Masons , You can ask them if they are hiring laborers . It is a Union , Local 79 . They might be able to help you or put you on a list .It is a good union .
OR , Ask them what NYC companies are hiring laborers at this time . Bring all your cards with you and I D , do not be afraid to show them all your cards. Mike Espo...

Do you need the Osha 10 and Osha 30 to work in construction in NYC? A friend told me i don't need the Osha 10 i just need the Osha 30 but i honestly think he's wrong.
He is right , the rules are for you to get on a construction site, you need a 30 hour OSHA card . Take the course in a class , not on line , a lot of fake company’s on line .

Every site in NYC has a working operator , or 2 and 3 and more. Now if you are looking for a job as a Equipment operator , you must go to school and learn how to operate a machine , its that simple . NYC is so busy now with construction jobs its not funny . Just walk around and see for yourself . Mike Espo....

I just finished up my OSHA 10 and I'm currently enrolled in OSHA 40 and will be complete by the end of this week.
My instructor suggested to me that once I'm done with OSHA 40 I should take the 4-hour scaffold. After coming across this video I'm also getting the flagger card. Can you recommend any additional cards I should get to increase my value when I talk to the foremen?

Right now no one is hiring in NYC, due to the riots and Covid 19 and waiting for the new President to happen , a lot of jobs closed up . NYC is really empty .

I’m not sure if it’s different for each state but I live in California do these step also apply for us or no?
Hi , In every state you need certain SST card training , or a OSHA 40 card .
If you google what are the certifications to work in construction in your state I am sure you will get the correct answer . or check with a local Union , a few unions still have entry level training programs and they will help you get all the correct cards in order to work . Good Luck . Mike .
I was looking into possibly becoming a contractor. Obviously, in order to do that I would need to work a construction job; however, I was also wanting to take up MMA as one of my hobbies that could possibly turn into a career if I end up being good enough at it. The earliest MMA class starts at 7:00pm. Do you think a construction job would be able to fit my schedule, or are they too sporadic?
Construction jobs hours in NYC are 6:00AM to 5:00Pm and longer , most guys do 12 hour days . Good luck with the MMA .

Just hit the streets. If you want , start in LIC Queens . Construction jobs are everywhere in LIC , its building up like crazy. Then go into NYC , start on Broadway , and you will see construction site everywhere. Mike

If you have time , go get your Fire safety card , you can get it in Brooklyn , it is a good card to have . I think it only cost 25.00 , and you can use it on a lot of sites . Also not that hard of a job to do .

Most of all carpentry work is done inside . First look up the NYC carpentry union , and apply for the apprenticeship program , i think the school for them is around 24 street , i am not sure . Or find a cabinet making shop , that is a shop that builds kitchen cabinets, in a shop you will start out cutting wood parts and then learn from them. Carpentry is a very good field , when you get really good at it you can build anything out of wood , and that's when the big bucks come in, custom work . Mike Espo . Good Luck..
Hey Mike, will a union foreman hire me if I have no construction experience, but present these certificates. I'm looking to get into the union as an apprentice carpenter. I'm just afraid that I won't get a job with the union and have certificates I can't make any use of. Do you recommend going non union then union, or should I go straight to the big leagues.
That is a hard question, There are many jobs in construction these days. So many times i have been asked by many people about union jobs , yes union jobs are great to work on and they have great benefits, but the word is BUT how do you get a union job if you do not know anyone who is in the union. In some cases you need a person who is in a union to get you a job. Construction is great in NYC right now , so if you really want a job you must walk the streets and ask people that you see outside of a construction site. In Queens LIC , a construction job is on every block. Now is the time . GET out in the street and talk to people , your not going to get a job sitting in your house looking at a computer all day , talk to the people . Union or non union they both build buildings that are in the big league ... Mike Espo
i'm a union worker maybe you get lucky and you can start as aprentice labor, butt if you want go to the ofice that you want to, they will give you the info.
Go union, Non-Union companies exploit there workers, lower pay no health benifits and take advatage of there workers. Be persistant, shape jobs im an operator local 15 nyc took me 3 years of not giving up and shaping jobs calling the business agents to finally get a shot and get my union book. Carpernters union just had applications and will continue. you can go on labor.ny.gov to look at what apprentiships are coming out

Hey Mike what if you have an engineering background. Would this also work to get an engineering gig in the city? Been looking for the last few years how to get back to the city I grew up in. Most engineering jobs are outside cities unless they are software.
I have an engineer on my site now for underpinning , he has his OSHA 30 card so that he is allowed to be on site .
Now everyone must have a 30 hour OSHA card to be even on the smallest site , or the big sites . So if you plan to work in NYC , you will have to get it . Mike Espo..

Hi Alex , i want you to go to LIC Queens , Local 79 Mason Tenders Union . Look up the address on Google , it is in LIC Queens , this is the school for Union laborers , The union has an Apprenticeship program , put your name on the list , ask question of how many guys they are hiring this year . Tell them you want to be in the Apprenticeship program.
Now , every month go back and place your name back on the list ! And do this every month over and over .

Hi , You can try this area , on 10 ave in NYC , from 24 street to 79 street , this ave is very busy , walk on 10 ave , you will see a lot of new construction . Also make sure you bring proof of the the 2 cards that you have and valid I D .

Is the osha 10 card and the 4 hour flag card in all states?
You don’t need the OSHA 10 anymore.
In NYC they completely changed the rules. You now need a SST CARD .
So Google SST card , I think it is a total of 60 hours of different subjects.
A flaggers card is still very good to have .

As a Engineer , to work on site you will need just the OSHA 10 Card . or if you want OSHA 30 card , same information as OSHA 10 , but more information about safety .

I live here in Connecticut, I assume all union construction jobs are the same in the aspect you need to know someone to start an apprenticeship? Personally I’m looking at my local electrician Union in Hartford, CT. How can I start an apprenticeship without knowing a union member?
It is very hard , but if walk up to 50 different job sites an ask to speak with the electric foreman , and the foreman comes out to the street to talk to you , just ask for the entry level job , do not bring up apprenticeship , if they hire you as a helper and you turn out to be a good worker then the apprenticeship will follow . I don't think so . But some times they do ask for a resume , hope that helps.

At 16 , see if you can find a local builder around where you live . Maybe a cabinet maker shop or tile store , and ask if they need a helper who wants to learn while he cleans up the shop . Good Luck .
Big mike, I just found your channel today and this is a good video on construction which I'm interested in. My question is I'm NYC is the work good in money
The money is good , some laborers start at 14 to 16 an hour plus benefits , if you have a flagging card , and/or a scaffold card these 2 are a plus , you must have a OSHA10 card to work on any site . Once you are a laborer you can always move up or work with a different trade, and then make even more money. Mike

You should get your flagging card , then walk all around NYC and hit the sites that are open , a lot of jobs are hiring . Just show them your ready to work and have your cards ready .

Hi , Sunny Unfortunately, a lot of sites in NYC right now are closing , part due to COVID 19 , the riots , unrest in the streets , and people moving out of NYC by the thousands . My company had 80 workers in the start of this year , we now are at 35 workers. I really don't know any sites that are hiring at this time , most companies are waiting to see who the President is going to be . Maybe 2021 will be the start for a new year and new jobs . I really wanted to tell you good news , but at this time i am not sure where to look . Good luck , Mike Espo.

It cannot hurt , NYC has many new sites opening everyday, all you need to do is walk around NYC and look and see for yourself . Best time to be in construction is now . Thanks Mike.

Hey big mike whats the situation with work permit and citizenship? Do employers look into that or will they not bother because my freind has a ITIN and osha card but hes from irland and dosent have citosenship he pays taxes and volenteers but wants to get into construction do you know anything about this gray area should it be a issue ?
It is a gray area , some small companies will let him work and ask no questions, but big companies will not let him work.
He just has to apply to more company’s and see how will hire him .

Mike, Im working in the middle East as safety specialist and planning to move to the states soon I have many certificates like iosh, nebosh, CPR,nasp, Jordanian osha, ohsas
What tips you give to get quick HSE jobs in the states nothing that I am also a us citizen
Right now many states have a lot of construction jobs , New York , New Jersey, Florida . It sounds like you have enough certificates to start as a safety coordinator , this is a good job and in demand. New York City has a site on almost every other block , so i do not see you having a problem finding a job. Mike

You now need a SST Card . OSHA 30 will be in that included in that card .
Check for a school in LIC , some courses on line are scams and your time doing them will not be accepted by NYC DOB .

Yes , but you would still have to get all the paperwork done, OSHA and SST .
It does take a while to complete.

Try a local shop near you , a place that is doing big house decks or installations of sprinklers. These shops you can walk right in and start working.
Show up asking for the job with a hard hat and gloves , maybe even safety glasses.
Show the owner that you are serious and ready to work. Your just another face , until you get working and prove yourself.
